Abstract:
AbstractThis paper explores what happens when artists fail to execute their goals. I argue that taxonomies of failure in general, and of failed-art in particular, should focus on the attempts which generate the failed-entity, and that to do this they must be sensitive to an attempt’s orientation. This account of failed-attempts delivers three important new insights into artistic practice: (1) there can be no accidental art, only deliberate and incidental art; (2) art’s intention-dependence entails the possibility of performative failure, but not of failed-art; and (3) art’s intention-dependence is perfectly compatible with the role that luck plays in artistic creation.

Kovacik, Gracen Lila. "Tell Sir Thomas More We've Got Another Failed Attempt: Utopia and the Burning Man Project." Scholar Commons, 2015. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/5831.

Abstract:
Burning Man, a weeklong experience in Black Rock Desert, Nevada, has become an oasis for those looking to escape the corporatized grasp of modern culture. Burning Man serves as a reprieve from judgment and allows participants to embrace and perform their inner identities. The intensions of Burning Man have been widely debated, from scholars concentrating on the rejection of consumerism to analyzing sacred space and religious connectivity for festivalgoers. What deserves further analysis, however, is the utopian nature of the event. I will explore previous utopian attempts--literary, political, etc.--and define what characteristics from those societies were present during the inception and following early years of Burning Man. Using the work of Ernst Bloch I will establish Burning Man as a not-yet-conscious utopia, a product of Larry Harvey's vision, and define the increasingly imminent threats to the event's utopianism. The segregation of ideas at Burning Man, between veteran Burners and newcomers, is attributed to the perpetual struggle to balance and create meaning within a society designed to provide autonomy for its citizens. I will look at how changes in popularity and population have transformed the once utopian retreat into an amalgam of conflicting ethos. I argue that this once thriving counterculture is facing an extreme shift away from the original structure of the event in terms of meaning, experience, and understanding.

To better understand how a hostile merge and acquisition (M&A) attempt acts as signaling mechanism and influences a target firm’s reaction after they rejected the M&A, this study identified four predictors related to a target firm’s prior strategies and performance, and investigated how these factors affect target firms’ choice of whether to refocus or not. Based on agency theory, this study argued that target firms with wider business coverage, ex ante defensive plans, lower performance growth and lesser slack resources are more likely to regard the hostile acquisition as a ‘wake-up call’, and it would motivate them to take refocusing actions in order to avoid future hostile acquisitions. These hypotheses were empirically tested by using a sample of 292 U.S-based target firms of failed hostile acquisitions between 1991 and 2017. This study found a positive impact of business coverage and a negative impact of ex ante defensive plan on the likelihood of refocusing. However, it is also shown that the influence of performance growth and slack resources are not salient. This study suggests that ex ante factors can help predict change in business strategies following a failed M&A.

Mohamed, Tasneem. "An evaluation of the use of G-CSF as an adjunct to IVF in women who have previously failed attempts at pregnancy with IVF." Thesis, 2017. https://hdl.handle.net/10539/25821.

Full text
Abstract:
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Medicine in the branch of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Johannesburg, 2017
Background Recurrent IVF failures may result from implantation defects of which a thin endometrium is often implicated. Studies show that improved endometrial thickness increases the probability of successful IVF. Objectives To evaluate the effects of transcervical instillation of G-CSF as an adjunct to IVF. The study looked at the influence of G-CSF on the endometrium and on the achievement of pregnancy. Methods A retrospective cross-sectional study of women attending Bio ART Fertility Centre, who had two or more failed IVFs previously. Results There were a total of 49 women studied with a mean age of 38.9. Mean number of previous IVFs were 3.1. Comparison between those that achieved pregnancy and those that did not showed that age was a statistically significant factor (p-value 0.0005). Mean endometrial thickness pre and post-GCSF between the groups was not statistically significant (p-values >0.05). Conclusion With the use of G-CSF we achieved a clinical pregnancy rate of 34.69% and a statistically significant overall expansion of endometrial thickness (p-value 0.0029). However we failed to show any association between endometrial expansion and pregnancy outcome.

Mobile manipulators offer the potential of simultaneous mobility and manipulation to meet the challenges of complex assembly tasks. However, there have been few attempts to utilize mobile manipulators for automating the final assembly of automotive manufacturing process. In this paper, we present the development of control strategies for a mobile manipulator to perform the assembly of automotive wiring harnesses onto a moving vehicle. We highlight the coordinated control framework that incorporates pure pursuit tracking control, discuss constrained motion primitives and reactive visual servo with force constraints, examine contact forces of the wiring harness assembly, and present experimental results for both successful and failed attempts of attaching a wiring harness to a moving vehicle body. Finally, we discuss remaining challenges in achieving robotic assembly automation on moving assembly lines.

Full text
Abstract:
It is no secret to anyone that the political system in Iraq has gone through and is still going through several crises and suffers from many problems that are difficult to limit and define within a specific research scope. Despite that, there are two main trends prevailing about the general view of the political system and its future in Iraq, which are centered on two visions: First: Seeing the possibility of reforming the political system Second: seeing the impossibility of reforming the political system and the political system must be changed) This was accompanied by developments; And repercussions that affected the entire structural system of Iraqi society, but all attempts at reform failed. Hence, the problematic of our study emerges in the main question: Does the Iraqi political system need change or reform, and what are the justifications for this change or reform, and what are the consequences of that locally? Regionally and internationally? The attempt to answer these and other questions requires that we start from the hypothesis of the Iraqi political system after 2003, which suffers from several structural problems that prevent the success of any attempt at political reform for it. The study is based on the following axes: The first topic: What is political reform and political change The second topic: Building the political system in Iraq after 2003 and the justifications for changing its reform The third topic: Obstacles to changing (reform) the Iraqi political system The fourth topic: Attempts to political reform and its future The study concluded a set of conclusions, perhaps the most prominent of which are: 1 - The future of the Iraqi political system in light of local, regional and international data indicates the impossibility of reforming this system due to the depth of its imbalances Its exacerbation and the depth of the rift that this system suffers from - and the absence of the means to reform, which center on the following options: A- Reform through coup methods B- Reform through popular revolution and that these options are not available at the present time, so it is expected that the current situation will continue with attempts A patchwork that gives the regime revival doses without radical solutions until reaching the framework of the Iraqi social contract, which will have two main options: the peaceful option and revolves around: The continuation of the October protests and the joining of the rest of the Iraqi components to them and their obtaining international and regional support to reformulate a new Iraqi social contract for the unity and stability of Iraq, the peaceful division between the Iraqi components to establish three Sunni Shiite states. Kurdish non-peaceful option external change such as the 2003 military coup, the international upheaval, the civil war

Abstract Owing to the COVID situation and transfer of manuscripts from ITSC 2020; this paper presents a shortened version of experiments and results that were recently published in a standard journal. For more details; please refer to the source [1]. Numerous obstacles are still to be resolved before power sources based on nuclear fusion could be employed. One of the major challenges are the materials used for construction of the main reactor vessels. In tokamaks; torus-shaped fusion facilities confining the hot plasma by strong magnetic fields; the innermost chambers are to be coated with dense coatings of W-based alloys. So far; the attempts for such coatings formation by other methods failed due to oxidation; high porosity; insufficient adhesion; high specific surface; or even insufficient thickness below 10 μm. Cold spraying seems a promising technology for the task. Here we demonstrate a successful fabrication of thick W; W-Cr and W-Cr-Ti coatings prepared without oxidation of the metals. For the first time in history; a deposition of 80 μm-thick coating of pure W was achieved.

Abstract:
It has been over 20 years since the Soviet Union collapsed. Despite that the post-Soviet countries were not able to build strong economic structure, which would be competitive in the international arena. They failed to implement the economic integration among themselves using communication that they had during the Soviet Union time. There have been various attempts to change the situation, but efforts were not successful due to various obstacles. Among these obstacles take place the influence of America, Russia and China, which are considered as great powers and which are pay great attention to Central Asia. This issue attracts attention due to the fact that the problems associated with the integration of the Central Asian countries still exists and that any integration process in the region does not achieve success without the involvement of other external forces. In this paper basic information about the integration processes between the Central Asian countries and their results will be analyzed. In addition, the attitudes of the Central Asian countries towards integration as well as economic and political influence of the great powers to the integration processes in the region will be examined.

Full text
Abstract:
Complex dynamic fields such as pulsation, vibration and noise are generated in turbo-machinery systems. These fields are created by the acoustic waves propagating in gaseous media and interacting with the turbo-machine casing and its components. The acoustic loads result from the flows nonuniformity, flow path obstacles or the machine kinematics. The acoustic waves frequently interact with the structural modes inside the turbo-machine. Such interactions may contribute significantly to structural failures and therefore are of primary interest to a machine designer. High ‘efficiency’ couplings usually lead to structural failures while low ‘efficiency’ couplings are not important. Thus, assessment of the coupling ‘efficiency’ is crucial in the calculation of failure probabilities. This knowledge could also be used during the root cause failure analysis or in the machine re-design process. The most ‘efficient’ coupling takes place when the so-called joint acceptance function, representing spatial coupling ‘efficiency’ and the transfer function, representing time coupling ‘efficiency’, describe full coincidence of the acoustic and structural modes. Partial couplings are usually unimportant due to their low ‘efficiency’. This paper attempts to explain partial and complete coupling concepts based on example of a failed compressor impeller. Some practical design remedies to avoid impeller failures are given while predicting the complete coupling.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The task of differentiating precisely between EOS and ESD failures continues to be a challenging one for Failure Analysis Engineers. Electrical OverStress (EOS) failures on the die surface (burnt/fused metallization) of an IC can be characterized mainly by the discoloration at the site of the failures. This is in direct contrast to the lack of discoloration characteristic of ESD failures, which occur almost exclusively below the die surface (oxide and junction failures). To aid in this distinction, this paper attempts to present the underlying physics behind the discoloration produced in the EOS failures. For the EOS failures, the metal fuses due to the longer pulse widths (sec to msec), while for the ESD failures, the silicon melts because of the shorter pulse widths (< < 500 nsec) and higher energy. After EOS, the aluminum surface becomes dark and rough and the oxide in the surrounding area becomes deformed and distorted, resulting in the discoloration observed in the light microscope. This EOS discoloration could be due to one or more of the following: 1) morphological and structural changes at the metal/glass interface and the glass itself; 2) changes in the thickness and scattering behavior of the glass and metal in the failed areas.

Full text
Abstract:
The efforts for understanding the 2007 Global Financial Crisis requires more elaborated studies on the institutions, processes and other micro foundations of financial services industry instead of studies solely on mainstream business cycles theories that have obviously failed in understanding, explaining and predicting the crisis. This paper attempts to investigate whether or not credit rating agencies had played a triggering role in 2007 Global Financial Crisis. It is a study of parties, institutions and processes within financial services market. It is well documented that the credit rating agencies whose main function is to provide investors with information about the credit-worthiness of securities on which they plan to invest had hardly ever performed that function properly during the crisis. By changing their business models from ‘investor pays model’ to ‘issuer pays model’, they paved the way to conflict of interest and inevitably created chaos in financial services industry. Credit rating agencies doubtlessly are responsible for triggering the 2007 Global Financial Crisis. However it should be fair to emphasize also the responsibility of the US regulatory processes in emerging the conflict of interest in credit rating industry by giving some credit rating agencies an oligopoly power in the credit rating market and taking their credit ratings as the basic points of reference for regulatory purposes. It is obvious that the credit rating industry needs a reform.

Abstract:
