Christoforidis, Michael. Impersonating Carmen in Victorian London. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195384567.003.0003.

Abstract:
Chapter 2 considers the importance of Carmen’s early productions in London in light of long-standing local interest in Spanish-themed song and dance. The success of the opera’s 1878 debut at Her Majesty’s Theatre, starring the young American singer Minnie Hauk in a dramatic interpretation of the title role, led to numerous stagings, including translation into English, and A delina Patti’s failed impersonation of Carmen. These productions were accompanied by a proliferation of parodies over the ensuing decade, most notably the two-act Gaiety burlesque, Carmen Up to Data (1890). This successful comic entertainment illustrates how the opera’s distinctive characters, plot, and Spanish color could become a vehicle for localized humor on the popular stage.

Abstract:
This introductory chapter provides a background of Simone de Beauvoir's feminism. As the political opposition hardened and the Women's Liberation Movement (MLF) matured in the 1970s, Beauvoir put “her notoriety and her connections at the service of this movement of young rabble-rousers without ever claiming to lead it in any certain direction.” Beauvoir supported those feminists interested in legal reform through the creation of a League of Women's Rights and those “who preferred to fight sexism by denouncing it with perspicacity and humor.” Moreover, she lent her support to a successful campaign for divorce law reform and an unsuccessful one for a law banning sexism, which won the support of the Secretary for Women's Rights in the new Socialist government in 1981, but failed after vehement opposition from advertisers and the press. In 1979, Beauvoir joined an international campaign—also unsuccessful—to defend the rights of women in the Iranian Revolution.

Abstract:
This timely study sheds new light on debates about humour and multiculturalism in France, and is the first monograph about multiculturalism and humour in France to be published in either English or French that analyses both debates about Charlie Hebdo and stand-up comedy. It will examine humour, freedom of expression and social cohesion in France at a crucial time in France’s recent history following the Charlie Hebdo attacks of January 2015. It will evaluate the state of French society and attitudes to humour in France in the aftermath of the events of January 2015. This book will argue that debates surrounding Charlie Hebdo, although significant, only provide part of the picture when it comes to understanding humour and multiculturalism in France. This monograph will fill significant gaps in French and international media coverage and academic writing, which has generally failed to adequately examine the broader picture that emerges when one examines career trajectories of notable contemporary French comedians. By addressing this failing, this book provides a more complete picture of humour, multiculturalism and Republican values in France. By focusing primarily on contemporary comedians in France, this book will explore competing uses of French Republican discourse in debates about humour, offensiveness and freedom of expression. Ultimately, this work will argue that studying humour and multiculturalism in France in often reveals a sense of national unease within the Republic at a time of considerable turmoil.

Benatar, David. Very Practical Ethics. Oxford University PressNew York, NY, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/9780197780831.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Very Practical Ethics discusses moral problems that ordinary people face in their everyday lives. These are not moral problems that arise only in extraordinary circumstances, nor those which are confronted only by select people in their professional or public roles. Instead, they are problems that most people face regularly. They are very practical issues, both because of their ubiquity and because individuals reaching conclusions about them are typically able to implement those conclusions readily. Among the questions asked are: When is sex morally permissible? What duties do I, as an individual, have with regard to the environment? When may one engage in practices such as smoking that might cause discomfort to, and increase risk for others? How extensive are an individual’s duties to give charity or otherwise assist the world’s poor and others in dire need of help? Is it morally permissible to consume animals and their products? When is language prejudicial? Is it wrong to swear? How should we address and refer to others? When, if ever, is controversial humour morally permissible? Is it always wrong to bullshit, or to fail to call out the bullshit of others? When should we forgive—and when should we not forgive?

Goldberg, Dan, and Don Martin. The Entrepreneur's Guide to Successful Leadership. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400646638.

Full text
Abstract:
It's one thing to come up with a good business idea, and quite another to marshal the people, money, and other resources entrepreneurs need to make the dream a successful reality. That's why most businesses fail within the first two years. The Entrepreneur's Guide to Successful Leadership helps budding moguls make it out of the toddler phase of entrepreneurship and into adolescence and adulthood with confidence. A concise and practical guide to leading smaller enterprises, the book is based on a proven, nine-step model of effective leadership developed by Dan Goldberg—the founder of the For Eyes optical chain—and entrepreneur and educator Don Martin. Step by step, readers learn what real leadership looks like and how to lead and grow the successful enterprise. Creating a vibrant business starts with understanding who you are, say the authors, and then coming up with a vision, mission, and strategy. That's the easy part. The hard part is to execute the strategy in line with your dreams, while using effective, ethical tactics to establish the business and prosper. Seasoned hands, the authors make that job easier, while helping entrepreneurs understand what makes employees tick and helping them become their productive best. The hard work not only gets easier, say the authors—it pays off as entrepreneurs watch their fledgling businesses take graceful flight. This book is a treasure chest that provides key insights and methods in the form of real-life stories, humor, strategies, techniques, exercises, checklists, templates, and other resources. Each illustrates in a unique way how good leaders achieve powerful results. Many books on leadership are gimmicky. The Entrepreneur's Guide to Successful Leadership focuses—in clear, simple, and direct terms—on the essential fundamentals, the blocking and tackling, required for business success.
