They represent the ratio of the time in field to the time in test for a particular event to occur (typically a failure event related to a specific failure mechanism). Time to failure for a device generally correlates with the amount of stress applied (the higher the stress, the quicker the device will fail), and failure models exist to mathematically define that correlation for various failure mechanisms. Abstract The research on automotive safety usually involves crash test experiments. These tests are very expensive, often difficult to replicate, which may lead to serious loss. This paper shows the crash test reliability analysis and classifies the risk of failure of such experiment. 46 frontal crash tests were conducted with the use of crash test dummies. All the tests were prepared according to the standard operating procedure (SOP) and the strict check list was followed before each run. All the tests were categorized for loss and analyzed for the cause of failure. Then the probability of f

The indirect tension test is an important laboratory test for rock characterization. The presence of rock fabric, such as schistosity, complicates the assessment of test results. One hundred and forty-five indirect tension tests were conducted on mica schist specimens to investigate the effect of schistosity orientation on failure mode and tensile strength. Tensile strength results did not provide a clear relationship between schistosity orientation and tensile strength, so the failure patterns were investigated. A new naming scheme for failure modes was developed, incorporating fracture patte

Extreme weather is known to cause failure bunching in electrical transmission systems. However, protection systems can also contribute to the worsening of the system state through various failure modes—spontaneous, missing or unwanted operation. The latter two types of failures only occur when an initial failure has happened, and thus are more likely to happen when the probability of failure of transmission lines is high, such as in an extreme weather scenario. This causes an exacerbation of failure bunching effects, increasing the risk of blackouts, or High Impact Low Probability (HILP) event

This paper presents the results of centrifuge tests on rainfall-induced instabilities in variably saturated slopes. The roles of rainfall intensity and initial conditions, such as slope angle, porosity and degree of saturation of the soil, in the failure initiation and postfailure kinematics are considered. The failure patterns, infiltration profile and deformation at prefailure and postfailure stages are characterized. The results indicate that rainfall-induced slope failures usually follow one of the following two failure modes, i.e. slide-to-flow and flowslide failure modes.

The scratch test is a well-established instrumental method for assessment of the cohesive-adhesive parameters of thin films and coatings. Its evaluation is classically performed using the microscopic analysis of residual scratch and the indenter depth-change record. However, these analysis methods can be insufficient for detection of the very first film-to-substrate adhesion failures. To overcome this difficulty, an independent method of detection of acoustic emission signals can be employed. The detection system of acoustic emission, developed in our laboratory, utilizes a special holder and

Additive Manufacturing (AM) became a popular engineering solution not only for Rapid Prototyping (RP) as a part of product development but as an effective solution for producing complex geometries as fully functional components. Even the modern engineering tools, such as the different simulation software, have a shape optimization solution especially for parts created by AM. To extend the application of these methods in this work, the failure properties of the 3D-printed parts have been investigated via shear test measurements. The layer adhesion can be calculated based on the results, which c
