Abstract:
We investigate binary words and ω-words, mainly those generated by D0L systems. We compare the numbers of occurrences of ab and ba as (scattered) subwords by introducing a 'difference function'. Of special interest are the 'balanced' or 'fair' words for which the function assumes the value 0. If the three first words in a D0L sequence are fair, so are all words in the sequence. Two kinds of matrices constitute a useful technical tool in the study. An explicit formula, leading to various consequences, is obtained for the difference function.

It is well known that people deviate from randomness as they attempt to mentally generate head–tail sequences as randomly as possible. This deviation from randomness is quantified by an excess of repetitions or alternations between successive responses more than would be expected by chance. We conducted an experiment in which a sample of students was asked to mentally simulate a sequence as if it is produced by a fair coin. We propose several models based on Markov chains for analysing the dynamic of head–tail outcomes in these sequences. First, we explore observed Markov chains and suggest so

AbstractThis chapter provides techniques for power grid network sizing while considering electromigration reliability. Starting with power grid network and electromigration (EM) fundamentals. Specifically the concerns here are EM immortality and aging effects used as EM constraints when formulating the optimization problems. The chapter first shows that the new power/ground (P/G) optimization problem, subject to the voltage IR drop and new EM constraints, can still be formulated as an efficient sequence of linear programming (SLP) problem, where the optimization is carried out in two linear programming phases in each iteration. The new optimization will ensure that none of the wires fails if all the constraints are satisfied. However, requiring all the wires to be EM immortal can be over-constrained. To mitigate this problem, the improvement is to consider the aging effects of interconnect wires in P/G networks. The idea is to allow some short-lifetime wires to fail and optimize the rest of the wires while considering the additional resistance caused by the failed wire segments. In this way, the resulting P/G networks can be optimized such that the target lifetime of the whole P/G networks can be ensured and will become more robust and aging-aware over the expected lifetime of the chip.

Abstract:
AbstractThe clinical utility of precision medicine through molecular characterization of tumors has been demonstrated in some malignancies, especially in cases where oncogenic driver alterations are identified. Next generation sequencing data from thousands of patients with head and neck cancers have provided vast amounts of information about the genomic landscape of this disease. Thus far, only a limited number of genomic alterations have been druggable, such as NTRK gene rearrangements in salivary gland cancers (mainly mammary analogue secretory carcinoma), NOTCH mutations in adenoid cystic cancers, HRAS mutations in head and neck squamous cell cancers, and even a smaller number of these have reached regulatory approval status. In order to expand the scope of precision medicine in head and neck cancer, additional evaluation beyond genomics is necessary. For instance, there is increasing interest to perform transcriptomic profiling for target identification. Another advance is in the area of functional testing such as small interfering RNA and drug libraries on patient derived cell cultures. Liquid biopsies to detect specific tumor clones or subclones, or viral sequences such as HPV, are of great interest to enable non-invasive tracking of response or resistance to treatment. In addition, precision immuno-oncology is a tangible goal, with a growing body of knowledge on the interactions between the host immunity, the tumor and its microenvironment. Immuno-oncology combinations that are tailored to immunophenotypes of the host-tumor-microenvironment triad, personalized cancer vaccines, and adoptive cell therapies, among others, are in active development. Many therapeutic possibilities and opportunities lie ahead that ultimately will increase the reality of precision medicine in head and neck cancer.

This chapter takes a classic puzzle about coin-flipping and extends it to a roulette wheel. It examines Penney's Game, a two-player game played via the flipping of a fair coin. Player I picks a sequence of heads (H) or tails (T) of length three (it can be any agreed-on length, but in most literature it is length three) and makes his choice known. Player II then states her own sequence of length three. An umpire then tosses the coin until one of the two sequences appears as a consecutive subsequence of the coin flips. The player whose sequence appears first is the winner.

Empirical results demonstrate improved far transfer and near transfer task performance and higher self-efficacy for subjects trained in the conceptual-procedural sequence versus the reverse sequence, though user satisfaction was not significantly different between the two sequences. Abstract:
We study the problem of fairly allocating indivisible items to agents with different entitlements, which captures, for example, the distribution of ministries among political parties in a coalition government. Our focus is on picking sequences derived from common apportionment methods, including five traditional divisor methods and the quota method. We paint a complete picture of these methods in relation to known envy-freeness and proportionality relaxations for indivisible items as well as monotonicity properties with respect to the resource, population, and weights. In addition, we provide

Abstract The Assembly Sequence Planning (ASP) problem is a complicated task that is still performed manually in most advanced industries. It consists of finding the best or optimal sequence to assemble a certain product, given its CAD design. Although it seems simple at first, its complexity drastically increases with increasing numbers of product parts, so that complexity is very high for most actual industrial products. Many ASP planners have been developed by researchers to automate this problem, but most of these are not practical and general enough to deal with actual industrial products.

Chicontepec is one of the areas with the largest volume of original oil in place in Mexico; however, after more than 30 years of operation, its development has been very limited due to the high geological complexity and low rock quality of their reservoirs. The reservoirs are found in layered sequences of sediments deposited in turbiditic environments which have suffered different degrees of diagenesis, there is a great level of vertical heterogeneity and a very limited level of lateral continuity. The permeability of the reservoir area is in the range of 0.1 to 5 md, depending on the location

Abstract Tool path generation is a fundamental problem in numerical control machining. Typical methods used for machining 2.5D objects include generation of offset contours using trimmed offset curves and zigzag sequences. The offset contours result in unnecessary detailed curves far away from the object boundary. The zigzag sequences result in frequent stops and changes in tool direction. In this paper we present a novel approach for tool path generation based on wavelet theory. The theory of wavelets naturally leads to a simple cut sequence algorithm that provides valid and efficient coverag

The objective of this analysis is to assess MELCOR 1.8.5-RG against SCDAP/RELAP5 MOD 3.3kz (SR5m33kz), and SCDAP/RELAP5 MOD 3.3bf (SR5m33bf). This lower head creep rupture analysis considers: (1) Three Mile Island Unit 2 (TMI-2) alternative accident sequence-1, and (2) TMI-2 alternative accident sequence-2. SCDAP/RELAP5 model of TMI-2 alternative accident sequence-1 includes the continuation of the base case of the TMI-2 accident with the reactor coolant pumps (RCP) tripped, and the High Pressure Injection System (HPIS) throttled after approximately 6000 s accident time, SCDAP/RELAP5 model of

The Baong Formation is one of the formations that has hydrocarbon potential in the Aru Sub Basin, North Sumatra Basin (Figure 1). However, geological information in that area is still far less than is available in others. Analysis of sequence stratigraphy needs to be done to enrich geological information of the study area, maximize the results of exploration before exploitation, and make it easier to find the distribution of potential layers of oil and gas. Methods that are used in this research are electrofacies analysis to show the appearance of rock grain size and geological processes that

The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarised under five key headings:  Building blocks: The ultimate aim should be to build rich, detailed and testable narratives situated within a European context, and addressing phenomena from the longue durée to the short-term over international to local scales. Chronological control is essential to this and effective dating strategies are required to enable generation-level analysis. The ‘serendipity factor’ of archaeological work must be enhanced by recognising and getting the most out of information-rich sites as they appear. o There i
