Fifty-one overseed entries were evaluated in 1997-1998 for turfgrass performance. New experimental accessions of perennial ryegrass were darker in color than most of the commercially available germplasm included in this test. Ryegrass germplasm had better turfgrass quality after April, than did mixtures of perennial ryegrass with Poa trivialis, which performed well in December, January and March. The pond discharges into Accotink Creek, a highly urbanized tributary of the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay that is listed on the State of Virginia 303(d) list for multiple impairments. The entire multi-state Chesapeake Bay Watershed is subject to Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) restrictions on sediment, phosphorus and nitrogen. Twenty-three overseed entries (and a non-overseed check) were evaluated from November 1996 to June 1997 for turf performance over Tifgreen (328) bermudagrass. Entries varied for turfgrass establishment, color, quality, density, texture and uniformity on all evaluation dates. This study uses the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) TR-55 method to quantify the increase in stormwater runoff volume from infill residential redevelopment, or mansionization, in a 34-acre residential subwatershed of Fairfax County, Virginia. Analysis of 10 redeveloped lots in the subwatershed showed an average increase in impervious cover from 8% to 28% after redevelopment, resulting in an average increase in runoff volume of 18% for the 10-year, 24-hour storm. Contaminant fate and transport are two of the most important issues project officers have to deal with when developing a sound remediation strategy for a subsurface contamination site. To accurately assess these issues, knowledge of possible pathways, travel times and groundwater receptors are required. A groundwater flow model of a site facilitates the assessment process by determining flow paths, discharge areas and travel time from a contaminant source to a potential receptor. Access to highways from a local firehouse is a major problem for emergency services. Motorists often do not see flashing lights or hear sirens from the approaching emergency vehicles (EV) until emergency vehicles reach the highway entrance, often too late to take appropriate action. Many locations have installed special signals called emergency traffic signal systems (ETSS) or used signal preemption to notify motorists and to stop traffic to allow the emergency vehicle to enter the highway safely.
