Through an analysis of different versions of fairytales, this paper discusses the literary relationship between Apuleius and Basile, which became a major part of the Western fairytale canon due to Basile’s influence on the tales of Perrault and the Brothers Grimm. The common motifs of these various accounts point towards the influence that the folktale nature of myth had on the later fairytale genre.

Abstract:
This writing analyzes a lyric of a song entitled Cinderella, sung by Tata Young, a Thai-American singer in her album, I Believe which was released in 2004. The analysis focuses on how the lyric dismantles the images of women. In this case, it dismantles the images of women found in the works of fairytales which present women with certain images such as weak, passive, submissive, dependent and other weakening images. Thus, this lyric presents the images of women different from those found the fairytales.

Abstract In this paper I will examine how the fairytales written by Zachris Topelius, the famous 19th century Finnish storyteller, were translated into Finnish and into English at different times. The fairytales contain Topelius’ personal ideals of upbringing, biblical and religious as well as moral and educational elements, for instance. The authors of the more recent translations have considered it necessary to modify the source texts so that they would be more accessible to today’s children than the earlier Finnish translations. In my analysis, I focus on the translational choices made by t

Abstract This paper brings into focus the feminine qualities that heroines in Western fairy tales possess, as well as the roles they traditionally perform. The heroines are either rewarded or punished in accordance to how well they fit the feminine pattern, while the association of femininity with the female clearly indicates the social impact of gender ideology. Two variations on the Cinderella story will illustrate how feminist revisions of fairytales upset this rigid division.

In his engaging volume on fairytales, George MacDonald wrote that the purpose of a fairytale is “not to give the reader things to think about, but to wake up things that are in him." By contrast, many works of art, including contemporary musical compositions, are accompanied by statements of “things to think about,” such as didactic program notes by the composer on pet social justice issues. This essay explores what can be done in a piece of music to “wake up things” already in the listener. These include invoking something familiar in the musical style, using essential building blocks of beau

Another perspective equates fantasy with fairytales, illustrated byJ.R.R. Tolkien’s initial classification of his works as “fairytales” before t

Abstract:
This article examines Tahar Ben Jelloun’s Mes Contes de Perrault (2014) as a multilayered instance of literary appropriation. Ben Jelloun’s stories, which relocate Charles Perrault’s classic French fairytales to the Arab world, represent not only a subversive challenge to French cultural hegemony (as has been argued) but can also be read as a complex engagement with the history of French folktales and their literary adaptations. This study posits that Ben Jelloun’s project restores elements of realism to Perrault’s tales that were lost when the author adapted folk stories for the French court.
