Abstract:

The proliferation of fake news on Facebook and Google has been a hot-button topic after the 2016 US presidential election. Fake news phenomenon is not limited in the political sphere. The porn industries have been using affiliate marketers to send fake news to reach more consumers, even children. Easy availability of pornography for children on the internet has been an issue. In US, the average age of exposure to porn is 11 to 12. Frequent exposure to pornography may lead to normalization of harmful behaviors. Starting late 2013, internet service providers in Britain made “family-friendly filters,” which block X-rated websites, the default for customers, because kids are exposed to pornography at a young age. Google banned pornographic ads from its search engine from July 2014. Prostitution and escort services extend its market despite these efforts for the sake of the upsurge porn fake news. Porn fake news is produced purposefully to click, share, react, and comment. To mitigate the damage caused by porn fake news, designing a fully automated fake news detector is currently infeasible, because the problem at hand is too complex for technology alone. Even the subproblem of defining the criteria under which to classify news as “fake” creates ambiguity that requires human judgment. The ability to determine whether an article is real or fake requires more than just information about the article; it requires an understanding of cultural factors, for example “tea” maybe used by prostitution and escort services in Taiwan. This paper suggests one way to use artificial intelligence and human judgment to make it more valid to quarantine porn fake news.

Abstract:

Abstract Based on US and British regulations in force, this article offers an overview of legislation of two Common Law countries in the area of modern forms of law infringements focusing on the notions of revenge porn and fake porn. The first part contains definitions and descriptions of the terms ‘revenge porn’ and ‘fake porn’, pointing out to the context of the relationship between the dynamic technological development and use of artificial intelligence on the one hand and the regulatory framework failing to meet the current needs on the other. Further, examination is conducted of US and British legislation in force divided into civil and criminal law, indicating legislative gaps as well as the inefficiency of the existing legal solutions and presenting a range of proposals of legislative changes. The considerations have been supplemented with the results of the author’s assessment of sociological and statistical research available in source literature carried thus far in the field in question. The following section is dedicated to a comparative assessment of American and British legal solutions based on selected, critical issues. The final parts of the article serve to postulate systemic changes in legislation and is a proposal to introduce out-of-court dispute settlement methods in legal disputes pertaining to the matters discussed herein, and to frame future research directions.

Abstract:

Deepfake videos are the product of artificial intelligence or machine-learning applications that merge, combine, replace and superimpose images and video clips onto a video, creating a fake video that appears authentic. The main issue with Deepfake videos is that anyone can produce explicit content without the consent of those involved. While some of these videos are humorous and benign, the majority of them are pornographic. The faces of celebrities and other well-known (and lesser-known) individuals have been superimposed on the bodies of porn stars. The existence of this technology erodes trust in video evidence and adversely affects its probative value in court. This article describes the current and future capabilities of this technology, stresses the need to plan for its treatment as evidence in court, and draws attention to its current and future impact on the authentication process of video evidence in courts. Ultimately, as the technology improves, parallel technologies will need to be developed and utilised to identify and expose fake videos.

Abstract:

In 2014, the Spanish artist Amalia Ulman gathered inspiration from the ways of aestheticizing everyday life chosen by Instagram users to develop an elaborate performative photographic series that lasted months and existed firstly only on her personal Instagram feed @amaliaulman. In April of that year, she suddenly started posting iPhone photographs about an apparently trendy life she was living in Los Angeles, California. She started reproducing the style of different Instagram personas while incorporating the usual aesthetic choices of the social media. The narrative constructed by each of the 175 pictures accounted for her life as an artsy girl who firstly moves to LA after apparently breaking up with a boyfriend, starting work as an escort, having cosmetic plastic surgery and drug abuse issues, followed by time in rehab, and finally posts about recovery, and healthy and fitness habits. The attention to the details of what she wrote and exhibited was what probably made the almost 90 thousand subscribers she gathered along the 5 months of the performance very surprised when she finally announced it was all part of an art work entitled Excellences and Perfections. This fictional life of Amalia Ulman was thoroughly calculated to appear believable to an audience already accustomed to aesthetics of this social media visual culture by reproducing certain patterns of pictures, captions, use of hashtags and interactions with followers. This paper will analyse the performance via the Instagram archive as well as the recently published book Excellences and Perfections. (2018), discussing the ways that it deals aesthetically with questions of identity, gender, class, sexuality and “lifestyle porn” in a visual network platform. The main question to be discussed is: how did the aesthetic choices of this performance made a fake story so convincing?

In the mass media era, the role of the media was universally regarded as fundamental to the proper functioning of the democratic state: the media’s capacity to provide information freely to all citizens ensured they had equal access to the democratic process. There were many, though, who registered concern at the top-down, government-led and highly concentrated structures of power embedded here; it was easy to demonstrate how the flow of information could be manipulated and the power of the media abused. Consequently, the arrival of the digital era seemed to radically modify that power relation for the better. The initial enthusiasm, though, has been challenged by what, a decade or two later, we have ended up with: a digital landscape that does indeed offer unprecedented access to information, in ways that have been transformative – but that is also awash with socially regressive content: fake news, hate speech revenge porn and so on. In this article, I want to discuss some aspects of what we have got from the digital era so far, with a particular focus on the changing relationship between the media and democracy – and within that, the role of news, information and the practice of journalism.

Il paziente riferisce che le sue difficoltà sono emerse a seguito della rottura della relazione con la sua precedente fidanzata. Dopo una fase di approfondimento diagnostico, il trattamento è stato combinato, con approccio psicodinamico per analizzare le esperienze infantili e la strutturazione dei modelli operativi interni e cognitivo-comportamentale per lavorare sugli agiti e lavorare sui fattori di mantenimento della problematica.

Background Young people’s exposure to pornography has increased, as has the violent and sexist nature of mainstream porn. Contemporary content means young people are exposed to violent porn whether they like it or not, and it is no longer a question of whether they will be exposed, but rather when. Methods: Using purposive sampling, 33 in-depth interviews were conducted with young people aged 15–20 years in 2010–11, to explore the phenomenon of sexting. During initial interviews, participants raised the topic of pornography exposure as a secondary, unexpected finding. Discussions highlighted an important link between sexting and pornography. The inductive nature of the research meant this new and important area of inquiry was able to be explored. Results: Data was thematically coded and analysed using a grounded theory approach. Findings highlight that many young people are exposed to porn both intentionally and unintentionally. Furthermore, they are concerned about gendered norms that reinforce men’s power and subordination over women. A link between porn exposure, young men’s sexual expectations and young women’s pressure to conform to what is being viewed, has been exposed. Conclusions: Results are significant given this is one of few recent qualitative Australian studies to explore the issue of pornography exposure from the perspective of young people. Important implications for educators, parents and health providers have been revealed, including the need to create opportunities for young people to challenge the messages expressed in porn, and for their views to be heard in academic and public debate.

The phytopathogenic Gram-negative bacteriumDickeya dadantii(Erwinia chrysanthemi) feeds on plant cell walls by secreting pectinases and utilizing the oligogalacturanate products. An outer membrane porin, KdgM, is indispensable for the uptake of these acidic oligosaccharides. Here, the crystal structure of KdgM determined to 1.9 Å resolution is presented. KdgM is folded into a regular 12-stranded antiparallel β-barrel with a circular cross-section defining a transmembrane pore with a minimal radius of 3.1 Å. Most of the loops that would face the cell exteriorin vivoare disordered, but nevertheless mediate contact between densely packed membrane-like layers in the crystal. The channel is lined by two tracks of arginine residues facing each other across the pore, a feature that is conserved within the KdgM family and is likely to facilitate the diffusion of acidic oligosaccharides.

Abstract:

CONDOLENCE, as an act of courtesy, belongs to acts of speech which might give rise to face threatening acts (FTA) and the resulting confl icts. On the one hand, the face of the mourner, who must fi nd his or her way in the new extremely diffi cult situation, is threatened; on the other hand, the face of the speaker, whose task is to react properly to the fact of someone’s death, is threatened. What is helpful in avoiding confl icts is politeness strategies used by both senders and recipients. They constitute the research material excerpted from Polish and German obituaries and entries in books of condolence. The author of this paper has proved that both parties signalise there both positive politeness, which arises from the need of appreciation and support, and negative politeness, which is connected with the need of unlimited autonomy of acting. The nature of the performed analysis is pragmalinguistic and is based on the politeness theory of P. Brown and S.C. Levinson [1987], the focus of which is the concept of face understood as an image or representation.

Abstract:

We can face the fact that the factor of military power has been gaining increasing influence in the world politics. In this regard one of key tasks of international relations` studies is the exploration of armed forces` building of the countries in the dynamics. The creating a three-dimensional picture of these processes is difficult without the use of mathematical indicators, which show the key features and “narrow places” of the development and the usage of war machines’ potential of the key countries in the world arena. In this article the focal case of these studies with the usage of mathematical assessments is the Bundeswehr. The reason of the given choice is the changing German role and place in the Euro-Atlantic community and the world arena as the whole. Germany has been trying to become the status of full-fare world power. One of the inherent features of this process is the growing of the Bundeswehr`s potential that had begun in the second half of 2010-s and has had the perspective by the middle 2030-s. The article presents mathematical indicators that allow to show a more voluminous assessment of the progress of building the Bundeswehr's potential and German military budget (both in general and in terms of articles of spending and other specific indicators) in comparison with other largest NATO member states. The research paper also examines the indicators that make it possible to “highlight” the peculiarities of the Bundeswehr’s usage outside and inside the NATO zone of responsibility as well as issues the evolution of the foreign (allied) military presence on the territory of the FRG. The author tries to conclude the generalizations of German “war machine” development, basing on 11 mathematical indicators, 6 of which introduced into scientific circulation for the first time.

Abstract:

A calculation model is developed for mechanical seals with a laser-textured micro-pore face. The dimensionless hydrodynamic pressure distribution on the seal face at various operating conditions and micro-pore geometry parameters is obtained from a solution of the Reynolds equation by the finite difference method. An optimum micro-pore geometry parameter is found and consistent with experimental results. Results of parametric study demonstrate that the substantial hydrodynamic effect can be produced on the seal face with micro-pores.

Abstract:

An analytical model is developed to study the effects of operation conditions and micro-pore geometry parameters on the friction performance of the mechanical seals with a laser-textured micro-pore face. Seal opening forces at various operation conditions and micro-pore geometry parameters are obtained from the solution of the Reynolds equation by the finite difference method. A derivative expression of the friction torque of the mechanical seals with a laser-textured micro-pore face is calculated and contributing factors of the friction torque are analyzed. It is shown that fiction torque increases with increase of the rotating speed. An optimum pore size that corresponds to minimum friction torque is found and is consistent with experimental results.

Abstract:

The work analyzes the quality of sausage with mutton. The proportion of individual commodities was as follows 40% sheep thigh, 40% pork shoulder, and belly 20%. The protein content in pork shoulder was 20.11 g.100g-1 in sheep thigh 23.65 g.100g-1 and sausage 19.89 g.100g-1. Of the monitored amino acids, the highest content was in lysine, in the sausage was 1.9 g.100g-1 and of the raw materials in the belly 2.1 g.100g-1. We also found a higher proportion of leucine 1.7 g.100g-1 in both sausage and sheep thighs. The arginine content in the sausage was also high 1.39 g.100g-1. We found a high content of palmitic acid in the pork shoulder of 24.38 g.100g-1 FAME. The content of palmitic acid in sheep meat was 24.32 g.100g-1 FAME and in sausage 24.16 g.100g-1 FAME. The content of stearic acid in the pork shoulder was 10.89g.100g-1 FAME, in the sheep thigh 10.64g.100g-1 FAME, in the belly 11.07 g.100g-1 FAME, and the sausage 10.92 g.100g-1 FAME. The MDA content in sheep meat was 0.185 mg.kg-1, in pork shoulder 0.141 mg.kg-1, in pork belly 0.22 mg.kg-1 and in sausage on the day of production 0.45 mg.kg-1. On the 30th day, the MDA content was in the sausage 0.78 mg.kg-1. The high MDA content of the sausage was probably most influenced by the technological process, as all raw materials, because there was a lower MDA content.

El marco interpretativo feminista será el enfoque teórico que utilizaré en este texto para analizar la pornografía. Desde este planteamiento argumentaré que el porno mainstream es una producción ideológica propia de los patriarcados más duros, pero su configuración material también es una producción económica del capitalismo neoliberal. La pornografía es un fenómeno social que muestra al mismo tiempo la peor cara de las sociedades patriarcales, pero también el rostro más brutal de las sociedades capitalistas. Desde este análisis, por tanto, el debate sobre la pornografía no es de naturaleza moral sino política. El objetivo último de este texto es explicar que la pornografía es un fenómeno funcionalmente vinculado a la prostitución hasta el extremo de convertirse en su auténtica pedagogía. This article uses the feminist interpretative framework as a theoretical approach to analyze pornography. From this approach, it is argued that mainstream porn is an ideological production typical of the hardest patriarchy, but its material configuration is also an economic production of neoliberal capitalism. Pornography is a social phenomenon that shows at the same time the worst face of patriarchal societies, but also the most brutal face of capitalist societies. Therefore, from this analysis, the debate about pornography is not a debate of a moral nature but of a political nature. The final objective of this article is to explain that pornography is a phenomenon functionally linked to prostitution to the point of becoming its authentic pedagogy.

Abstract:

The aim of the study was to determine the content of bioactive ingredients in the American cranberry extracts (Vaccinium macrocarpon), the antimicrobial activity of these extracts and the efficiency of the selected extract in minced pork meat together with its sensory evaluation. Three extracts were made: aqueous (w-FACE), ethanol (e-FACE) and aqueous-ethanol (we-FACE). The content of bioactive components was tested by HPLC. Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) were determined against ten Gram-negative bacteria strains and six Gram-positive bacterial strains by serial macrodilution method. Minced pork meat with or without addition of 2.5% w-FACE was inoculated with four pathogenic strains (Escherichia coli, Salmonella Enteritidis, Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus) and stored at 4°C for 6 days. In 0, 2, 4 and 6 day, the number of bacteria was determined by plate method. Sensory evaluation of meat samples with and without in-FACE included general appearance and smell. All extracts contained organic acids (p-coumarin, benzoic, chlorogenic and coffee) and flavone (quercetin, miristin, epicatechin and isorhamnetin). E-FACE also contains ursolic acid. The MIC/MBC values of the extracts were in the range of 1.56-6.25 (3.13-25.0) mg/ml against Gram-positive bacteria and 6.25-12.5 (6.25-25.0) mg/ml against Gram-negative bacteria. Statistically significant (p ≤ 0.05) inhibition of growth of all pathogens in minced pork meat containing in-FACE was found. The 2.5% w-FACE had no significant effect (p ≤ 0.05) on the initial sensory characteristics of minced pork meat and after 4 and 6 days of storage was significantly higher than that of FACE-free meat. This study applied the contingent valuation method to analyze the consumersâ€™ demand for the proposed safe pork. The data was collected by face-to-face interviewing 884 urban households in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta. The results revealed that the majority of consumers (about 64%) paid attention to the proposed safe pork. Their willingness to pay was about VND 176,000 ($ 7.65) per kg, nearly double compared to the market price of conventional pork. The results showed that the respondents who had higher household income, larger proportion of elderly and children in the family, paid higher price of a conventional pork, and get more knowledge score on the safe pork are more likely, while the respondents who have more number of family members are less likely to pay for the proposed safe pork.

The objective was to optimize the existing solution for the limit support pressure of a tunnel face. Firstly, based on the numerical simulation results, the existing three-dimensional analytical solution for pore water pressure distribution is expanded to a three-dimensional solution considering the pore water pressure distribution in the upper formation behind the tunnel face. Then, according to the results of physical model tests, a failure model considering the failure range in the upper formation behind the tunnel face is established, and the newly established three-dimensional solution for pore water pressure is introduced into the model, and then the limit effective support pressure of the tunnel face considering seepage is obtained by the method of soil–water joint calculation. Finally, the calculation results in this paper are compared with the experimental results, numerical simulation results and existing theoretical solutions. The major findings are as follows. The distribution of pore water pressure in the front and back strata above the tunnel face is basically symmetrical. The limit effective support pressure of the tunnel face will increase linearly with an increase in the hydraulic head difference between the tunnel face and the ground surface. The calculated results of the new limit equilibrium theory are obviously larger than those of the existing theory and numerical simulation and closer to the results of the physical model tests. Therefore, the new limit equilibrium model can better predict the limit effective support pressure of the tunnel face considering seepage and provide a reference for actual projects.

Carbonate rocks are controlled by variable depositional systems and diagenetic process and have a wide variety of pore and grain shapes/sizes. Those characteristics imprint different petrophysical properties in carbonates, which are more difficult to predict than in siliciclastic rocks. Measurements on carbonates reveal that pore/rock type parameters are function of total porosity and play an important role in the relationship between porosity and P-wave velocity. In this research, thedatabase consists of carbonate rock samples with a wide range of bulk porosities, pore types and rock textures, from different Brazilian areas in Southeast Continental Margin. We investigated the hypothesis that scatter values observed in velocity at a given porosity can be explained by pore types and pore shape characteristics. The quantification of pore shape/size distribution in each sample was based on four geometrical parameters from thin sections measurements – pore size, aspect-ratio,tortuosity and pore complexity. By multivariate analysis, those parameters were applied in the correlation between porosity and P-wave velocities in order to reducescatter values normally observed. RESUMO: As rochas carbonáticas são compostas por calcários e dolomitos de diversos tipos. Além da deposição, os processos de cimentação, dissolução e recristalização transformam essas rochas, produzindo uma grande variedade de tamanhos de grãos, formas e estruturas de poros, criando ou reduzindo porosidade e permeabilidade. Estas características dos carbonatos imprimem grande peculiaridade às propriedades físicas tornando-as mais difíceis de predizer do que em rochas siliciclásticas. As formas dos poros também afetam as propriedades físicas das rochas carbonáticas, produzindo um efeito específico nas propriedades acústicas devido às relações geométricas com a fase sólida das rochas. Por tudo que foi exposto, a compreensão do sistema de poros leva ao melhor entendimento e quantificação das propriedades petrofísicas das rochas carbonáticas. Nesta pesquisa foram utilizadas rochas carbonáticas com diferentes texturas, porosidades e tipos de poros de diferentes áreas da Margem Continental Sudeste Brasileira e o principal objetivo foi melhorar a correlação entre a porosidade e a velocidade das ondas P obtidas de plugues de rochas secas e úmidas. In urban environment, the soil disturbance induced by shield tunneling can be sensitive because it can cause deformation of the ground and damage the near structure. To study this disturbance in the construction process of Tianjin metro line No.3, in-situ monitoring of pore water pressure, soil pressure and ground settlement were conducted. The pore water pressure was monitored for the soil around the tunnel. The soil pressure was monitored for the soil around the tunnel and on the tunnel face. It was revealed that the pore water pressure and soil pressure changed twice in the tunneling process and these changes were induced by cutting face and grouting at the shield tail. The soil pressure on the tunnel face reached its maximal value when the distance between the cutting face and the sensor elements was around the diameter of the tunnel. Ground settlement developed in the tunneling process. The shape of ultimate settlement trough is closed to the one obtained by Pecks method.

An analytical model is developed to study the sealing performance of the mechanical seals with a laser-textured micro-pore face. The pressure distribution between the seal faces at various operation conditions and micro-pore geometry parameters can be obtained from a solution of the Reynolds equation by finite difference method, and then opening force and liquid film stiffness can be calculated. Seal face geometry parameters can be optimized by analyzing regulation of their effect on opening force and liquid film stiffness. Results of parametric study demonstrate that substantial hydrodynamic effect can be produced on the seal face with micro-pores.

We have fabricated columnar nano-porous SiC by photo-electrochemical etching on the C-face of n-type 6H SiC at constant voltage. SEM images reveal that the pores are long, straight and parallel with diameters of about 20 nm. We have produced such layers up to 250 μm thick. The pore morphologies for both Si and C-face SiC samples are compared and discussed as a part of the effort to understand the growth mechanism. It is found that the constant voltage etching condition on C-face SiC is crucial for this nano-columnar pore formation.

The short filaments extending from the cytoplasmic face of nuclear pore complexes are thought to contain docking sites for nuclear import substrates. One component of these filaments is the large O-linked glycoprotein CAN/Nup214. Immunoprecipitation studies carried out under nondenaturing conditions, and using a variety of antibodies, reveal a novel nonglycosylated nucleoporin, Nup84, that is tightly associated with CAN/Nup214. Consistent with such an association, Nup84 is found to be exposed on the cytoplasmic face of the nuclear pore complex. cDNA sequence analyses indicate that Nup84 contains neither the GLFG nor the XFXFG repeats that are a characteristic of a number of other nuclear pore complex proteins. Secondary structure predictions, however, suggest that Nup84 contains a coiled–coil COOH-terminal domain, a conclusion supported by the observation of significant sequence similarity between this region of the molecule and various members of the tropomyosin family. Mutagenesis and expression studies indicate that the putative coiled–coil domain is required for association with the cytoplasmic face of the nuclear pore complex, whereas it is the NH2-terminal region of Nup84 that contains the site of interaction with CAN/Nup214. These findings suggest a model in which Nup84 may function in the attachment of CAN/Nup214 to the central framework of the nuclear pore complex. In this way, Nup84 could play a central role in the organization of the interface between the pore complex and the cytoplasm.

AbstractThe study was conducted to characterize pork and pork products marketing and challenges in Ethiopia. Multistage random sampling procedure was applied to select a total of 40 pork retailers from six towns. Structured questionnaire was used to collect information through face to face interview. Pork retailers were clustered into three categories as small scale (sell <5kg pork per day), medium scale (sell 5-10kg pork per day) and large scale (sell >10kg pork per day) based on quantities of pork selling per day. Collected data were analyzed using appropriate statistical procedures of SAS and SPSS software packages. The result showed that the quantity of pork products sold per day was too small. About 61.5, 15.4 and 23.1% of pork retailers were selling <5, 5-10 and >1 kg of pork products per day in small, medium and large scale retailers, respectively. In most cases, pork was sold in the form of mortadella, sausage and salami. In addition to pork selling, almost all of the pork retailers were selling one or more other meat types such as beef, mutton, goat meat, fish and chicken. About 92.3% of the pork retailers were selling both beef and chicken meat, and 79.5, 48.7 and 10.3% of them were selling fish, mutton, and goat meat, respectively. The average price (followed by SE) of a kilo gram of pork was 162(6.3), 164(4.0) and 172(6.0) Ethiopian Birr (ranging 7.5 to 8 USD per kg of pork) in small, medium and large scale pork retailers, respectively. The presence of few pork consumers, lack of formal central markets and public complain against pork consumption were the major challenges observed in pig and pork marketing value chain. In concussion, the findings of this study will improve awareness on existing pork marketing systems in Ethiopia and provide valuable information that can support future interventions aiming to solve key challenges in the market value chain.

La preparación de cerámicas con composiciones cercanas al CFM por métodos convencionales, conduce a cerámicas con estructura pirocloro. En este trabajo, polvos de ((1 - x)Pb(Zn1=3Nb2=3)O3-xPbTiO3-PZN-xPT) con x = 0;10 fueron sintetizados por el método de reacción por combustión. Como combustibles fueron usados: CO(NH2)2, C2H5NO2, CO(NH2)2=C2H5NO2 y C4H16N6O2. El resultado indica que el mayor porcentaje de fase perovskita (70 %) fue obtenido usando CO(NH2)2= C2H5NO2 (razón 50=50). Esta fase es mantenida al sinterizar la muestra a 1000 C en atmósfera de nitrógeno.

BackgroundLow-cost face masks made from different cloth materials are very common in developing countries. The cloth masks (CM) are usually double layered with stretchable ear loops. It is common practice to use such masks for months after multiple washing and drying cycles. If a CM is used for long time, the ear loops become stretched. The loop needs to be knotted to make the mask loop fit better on the face. It is not clear how washing and drying and stretching practices change the quality of a CM. The particulate matter (PM) filtering efficiency of a mask depends on multiple parameters, such as pore size, shape, clearance, and pore number density. It is important to understand the effect of these parameters on the filtering efficiency.MethodsWe characterized the surface of twenty different types of CMs using optical image analysis method. The filtering efficiency of selected cloth face masks was measured using the particle counting method. We also studied the effects of washing and drying and stretching on the quality of a mask.ResultsThe pore size of masks ranged from 80 to 500 μm, which was much bigger than particular matter having diameter of 2.5 μm or less (PM2.5) and 10 μm or less (PM10) size. The PM10filtering efficiency of four of the selected masks ranged from 63% to 84%. The poor filtering efficiency may have arisen from larger and open pores present in the masks. Interestingly, we found that efficiency dropped by 20% after the 4th washing and drying cycle. We observed a change in pore size and shape and a decrease in microfibers within the pores after washing. Stretching of CM surface also altered the pore size and potentially decreased the filtering efficiency. As compared to CMs, the less frequently used surgical/paper masks had complicated networks of fibers and much smaller pores in multiple layers in comparison to CMs, and therefore had better filtering efficiency. This study showed that the filtering efficiency of cloth face masks were relatively lower, and washing and drying practices deteriorated the efficiency. We believe that the findings of this study will be very helpful for increasing public awareness and help governmental agencies to make proper guidelines and policies for use of face mask.

Abstract:

We have used enzymic digestion as a structural probe to investigate components of the nuclear envelope of germinal vesicles from Xenopus oocytes. Previous studies have shown that these envelopes are composed of a double membrane in which nuclear pore complexes are embedded. The nuclear pore complexes are linked to a fibrous lamina that underlies the nucleoplasmic face of the envelope. The pores are also linked by pore-connecting fibrils that attach near their cytoplasmic face. Xenopus oocyte nuclear envelopes were remarkably resistant to extraction with salt solutions and, even after treatment with 1 M NaCl or 3 M MgCl2, pores, lamina and pore-connecting fibrils remained intact. However, mild proteolysis with trypsin selectively removed the lamina fibres from Triton-extracted nuclear envelopes to leave only the pore complexes and connecting fibrils. This observation confirmed that the pore-connecting fibrils were different from the lamina fibres and were probably constructed from different proteins. Trypsin digestion followed by Triton treatment resulted in the complete disintegration of the nuclear envelope, providing direct evidence for a structural role for the lamina in maintaining envelope integrity. Digestion with ribonuclease did not produce any marked change in the structure of Triton-extracted nuclear envelopes, indicating that probably neither the pore-connecting fibrils nor the cytoplasmic granules on the pore complexes contained a substantial proportion of RNA that was vital for their structural integrity.

This study investigated the responses of Enterococcus faecium (ATCC 19433), Staphylococcus aureus (196E), and Listeria monocytogenes Scott A in water from a local meat-processing plant. Each bacterium was added to a starting count of 3 log10 CFU/ml and held from 5 to 28°C. At intervals (0, 2, 7, 14, and 21 days), aliquots were plated on appropriate selective agars. In contrast to the gram-negative bacteria studied previously and which grew, the three gram-positive bacteria survived with some slight increase in number in only nonchlorinated, reconditioned water, either filtered (0.22 μm pore size) or nonfiltered. The presence of chlorine in either potable or reconditioned water contributed to the rapid decline in viable counts for all three bacteria. These results further emphasize the importance of residual chlorine in preventing the growth of these gram-positive bacteria in potable and reconditioned waters.

Abstract:

This text addresses the Polish scientifi c terminology of astronomy. This subject is relatively rarely discussed in the linguistic literature. The authors handle the divisions of astronomical terms by specifi c criteria, the process of coining the Polish astronomical terminology, and tendencies noticeable in its formation over time. They also deal with the old astronomical vocabulary, which has survived to date and is used as the basisfor modern terms. Furthermore, they analyse awareness of the language and terminology among astronomers in the past and in the present. Finally, they discuss the current state of the Polish astronomical terminology. In the conclusion, they postulate the creation of a web portal dedicated to it, which would not only be a useful terminographical solution but also improve its situation in the face of the dominance of English.

Abstract:

Abstract This article aims at analyzing how the penetration of a commercial rational into the religious field impacts the relations between the State and the Muslim religion in the case of post-Soviet Russia. Here, the rise of a ‘halal market’ – that is the market for halal products and the market of halal certification – was punctuated by scandals. This research scrutinizes one of them, linked with halal meat products containing pork dna. This scandal is studied as it reveals the pre-existing order and is considered per se, as a critical test when common values and norms are either abandoned or strengthened, and previously established relations are transformed. First, the article presents how Islam is organized and regulated in the Russian Federation; then it analyzes the ‘scandalization strategy,’ which leads to the reconfiguration of the game of actors. Lastly, it examines how the scandal, through the use of law and court decisions, contributes to the extension, legitimization and consolidation of the certificated ‘halal’ norm beyond the circles of pious Muslims. This research is based on empirical data gathered in Moscow and Kazan in 2018: the observation of a court trial and the analysis of documents relating to the legal proceedings, semi-structured interviews and online research.
