Congenital heart conditions can be characterized as cyanotic or acyanotic. This chapter discusses one of the most common cyanotic congenital cardiac conditions: tetralogy of Fallot. Tetralogy of Fallot is composed of distinct anomalies which result in left-to-right shunting of blood resulting in cyanotic spells, under certain conditions such as pain (and associated tachycardia) decreased oxygenation, decreased venous return, or hypotension. Recognizing factors that accentuate the left-to-right shunting of blood in this condition is essential for adequate management of a TET spell which is freq

Preload modulates contractile performance, and is determined by end-diastolic volume (EDV) and ventricular compliance. Compliance falls with increasing preload, muscle stiffness or ventricular hypertrophy, making central venous pressure (CVP) a poor surrogate for EDV. Responsiveness to fluid loading can be identified by seeking a change in stroke volume (SV) with changes in cardiac loading. Afterload, the force to be overcome before cardiac muscle can shorten to eject blood, rises with transmural pressure and end-diastolic radius, and inversely with wall thickness. The purpose of this study was to determine the HSP70 expression kinetics for new protocol design in cardiac surgery, based on HSP70 protection function in clinical applications. Bovine aortic endothelial cells (BAEC) were used in experiments. Cells were heated at 42°C at different time intervals up to 5 hours and subsequently incubated at 37°C for up to 48 hours. Western blot and quantitative protein analysis were performed to measure HSP70 expression. The expression kinetics is a function of thermal stress time as well as

Context: Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is an inherited recessive disease linked to the X chromosome, it is a progressive neuromuscular disease most prevalent in the world, affecting 1/3600 male births. It is associated with mutations that lead to loss of dystrophin protein expression, loss of severe muscle, respiratory and cardiac failure. At birth, the signs are generally nonspecific. At 3 years of age there is the appearance of specific changes, starting with muscle weakness, which occurs in an ascending, symmetrical and bilateral manner, becoming evident at around 5 years of age, with d
