Abstract:
IntroductionIt is standard practice in philosophical inquiry to test a general thesis (of the form ‘F iff G’ or ‘F only if G’) by attempting to construct a counterexample to it. If we can imagine or conceive of an F that isn't a G, then we have evidence that there could be an F that isn't a G — and thus evidence against the thesis in question; if not, then the thesis is (at least temporarily) secure. Or so it is standardly claimed. But there is increasing skepticism about how seriously to take what we can imagine or conceive as evidence for (or against) a priori philosophical theses, given the many historical examples of now-questionable theses that once seemed impossible to doubt — and also the recent experimental research suggesting that our verdicts on Gettier cases, trolley cases, and the scenarios depicted in other familiar thought-experiments may be affected by cultural, situational, and other adventitious factors.

Abstract:
In this paper I examine the testimonium of Aristotle’s Rhetoric concerning Diogenes the Cynic (SSR V B 184). This piece of evidence is the most ancient source of Diogenes and proves that Aristotle was familiar with his writings. I also study the testimonium on Diogenes that is handed down by Theophrastus (SSR V B 172), which confirms the interest of the ancient Peripatos in this philosopher. Finally, I examine a passage of Book 1 of the Politics where Aristotle refers to the thesis on the abolition of money. I argue that such a thesis could be ascribed to Diogenes. In particular, I attempt to demonstrate that several theses of political philosophy put forward by Diogenes should be considered as constituting a polemical overthrow of the corresponding theses of Aristotle in Book 1 of his Politics.

Abstract:
When I was a boy I always assumed that I would grow up to be both a scientist and a Red. Rather than face a problem of combining activism and scholarship, I would have had a very difficult time trying to separate them.… Before I could read, my grandfather read to me from Bad Bishop Brown's Science and History for Girls and Boys. My grandfather believed that at a minimum every socialist worker should be familiar with cosmology, evolution, and history. I never separated history, in which we are active participants, from science, the finding out how things are. My family had broken with organized religion five generations back, but my father sat me down for Bible study every Friday evening because it was an important part of the surrounding culture and important to many people, a fascinating account of how ideas develop in changing conditions, and because every atheist should know it as well as believers do.… On my first day of primary school, my grandmother urged me to learn everything they could teach me—but not to believe it all. She was all too aware of the "racial science" of 1930s Germany and the justifications for eugenics and male supremacy that were popular in our own country. Her attitude came from her knowledge of the uses of science for power and profit and from a worker's generic distrust of the rulers. Her advice formed my stance in academic life: consciously in, but not of, the university.

Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website.

Abstract:
Anti-reductionism in the epistemology of testimony is the thesis that testimonial knowledge is not reducible to knowledge of some other familiar kind, such as inductive knowledge. Interest relativism about knowledge attributions is the thesis that the standards for knowledge attributions are relative to practical contexts. This paper argues that anti-reductionism implies interest relativism. The notion of “implies” here is a fairly strong one: anti-reductionism, together with plausible assumptions, entails interest relativism. A second thesis of the paper is that anti-reductionism in the epistemology of testimony creates significant pressure toward attributor contextualism (a version of interest relativism). Even if anti-reductionism does not strictly entail attributor contextualism, the most powerful motivations for anti-reductionism also motivate attributor contextualism over alternative positions.

Abstract:
In this paper I argue that transformative fieldwork can and should be a pillar of an undergraduate education in anthropology. By transformative fieldwork, I mean long- or medium-term immersive participant observation that challenges the investigator’s beliefs, bodily experience (embodiment), and/or ethics, prompting adaptive responses that, collectively over time, fundamentally alter their experience of the world. My proposal has two parts. First, I advance the “senior thesis” – an in-depth research project undertaken in the final year of undergraduate study – as a viable placeholder for substantive fieldwork in an undergraduate curriculum. Such fieldwork, carried out locally or online, has advantages in accessibility, affordability, and authenticity relative to the conventional undergraduate gateway to fieldwork experience: methodological “field school.” Second, addressing a significant challenge to doing fieldwork on local (culturally familiar) terrain, I argue that such fieldwork can be transformative, and not merely a replication of familiar experiences, if students and their advisors design participant observation projects that carry significant consequences for the student’s beliefs, bodily experience, and/or ethics. I outline strategies for designing such projects, illustrated by examples drawn from my own students’ senior theses. The concluding section addresses three potential reservations about undergraduates undertaking “consequential” research.

Abstract:

Powson, Heidi. "Filipino families in Australia." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 1995. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/35849/1/35849_Powson_1995.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The Filipino community is one of the most rapidly expanding non-English speaking background communities in Australia: a young vibrant community, well educated and qualified, possessing exceptional English language proficiency.Because of a significant proportion of Filipino-Australian intermarriage, and a large family-oriented immigration trend, many unique cross-cultural and social issues have emerged in the Filipino community. An examination of the literature revealed that many aspects on Filipino immigration to Australia are disproportionately studied, leading to the perpetuation of stereotypes and myths. There has been a tendency to focus on Filipino wives (not women), without reference to Filipino men, or to cultural values and experiences of Filipino families. The main objective of this study was to provide a broad sociological survey of Filipino immigrant families and latter generations in Australia. This study analysed the amalgamation of Filipino and Australian cultures through diverse family structures, and highlighted both differences and commonalities. The recognition of Filipino immigrants as active agents in their own settlement, provided an understanding of the adaptive reconstitution of Philipino culture through family interactions, child-rearing practices, employment and intergenerational experiences. An historical and cross-cultural perspective has employed to analyse the development of Filipino immigration to Australia and the socio-cultural issues affecting Filipino families.

Abstract:
My short narrative film Passed Down follows three generations of men in a family: a son, a father and a grandfather. Composed of four short scenes, the film focuses on the three characters as they work through issues of masculinity, passed down from one generation to the next. My film suggests that this cultural sharing is part of a much larger set of social boundaries that help define what it is to "be a man". These scenes reflect my own personal experience with this phenomenon, as a son and as a father myself.

Weiner, Kate. "Patient and professional constructions of familial hypercholesterolaemia and heart disease : testing the limits of the geneticisation thesis." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2006. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/10190/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides an empirical investigation of the geneticisation thesis. Geneticisation is one of the most prominent critiques of the social and cultural implications of developments in genetics. It incorporates a set of claims and expectations about the way genetic knowledge and technologies are transforming or will transform ideas about health and illness, and health care practices. This research aims to explore the empirical basis of these claims, by looking at the place of genetic discourses and practices in one specific area. The thesis focuses on familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH), a treatable hereditary cholesterol condition associated with high rates of coronary heart disease (CHD). It asks how much and in what ways patients with FH and professionals involved with the condition construct FH and CHD as genetic conditions. The thesis draws on three main areas of data - biomedical literature concerning CHD and FH; ethnographic work concerning the activities of HEART UK, the main UK health charity involved with inherited lipid disorders and cholesterol; and interviews with patients with FH and with staff and members of HEART UK. The analysis suggests that FH is not understood or managed within a strong genetic frame, and that neither professionals involved in HEART UK, nor patients with FH, provided or contributed to radically new or geneticised accounts of CHD. In short, the research suggests that geneticisation overstates the transformatory potential of genetics, and that factors such as the availability of effective therapeutics, the sites where care takes place, the disciplines involved, and existing lay and professional models of disease are important for the construction of a particular field. Furthermore, in arguing that FH is not associated with a strong specific disease identity or community, the analysis questions the notion of biosociality, suggesting that is may be less relevant to some biological states or conditions than to others.

Molefi, Stanley. "Families’ experiences with schizophrenia." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/2567.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MA (Psychology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Families of people with schizophrenia often experience difficult challenges when it comes to dealing with this illness. Contemporary researchers suggest that families often take on the task of caring for their ill relatives with limited resources and support. Mental health professionals often fail to include the families in the treatment of their relatives. Although psychoeducation has been shown to be an important process that helps not only the families but relatives as well, mental health professionals commonly do not involve families in such activities. This study explored the experiences of families of people with schizophrenia and their subsequent contact with mental health professionals, as well as their understanding of schizophrenia as a mental disorder. To this end, a small sample of 10 families (four Xhosa speaking families as well as six Coloured families) was drawn in the Western Cape area on a convenience basis. In each case a family caregiver was interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire. Data were content analyzed. The findings of the study indicate that families find it difficult to deal with their ill relatives. Families often experience stigma-related incidents because of their relatives. They feel isolated and alone. Families often yearn to receive more information about the illness of their relatives. Also, the contact between mental health professionals and families was reported to be minimal at best. Family members reported that mental health professionals do not include them in the treatment process. Recommendations for further research and practice are made.

Abstract:
The last twenty years has seen a significant improvement in the physical health of sufferers of Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) due to advances in medical assessment, diagnosis and treatment. Children with CHD are living longer into adolescence and adulthood. Research now assesses the psychosocial development of this population. Two studies were conducted: phase one used qualitative research analyses to interview adolescents (N=6) about their experiences with CHD. A number of themes emerged: CHD defines sense of identity and experience of the disease generates apprehension. Phase 2 used quantitative analysis to measure experiences of Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) and psychopathology in a larger sample (N-42). Older adolescents were more likely to experience negative mood, anger, poorer cognitive and social functioning. A number of HRQoL scales were related to depression, anxiety and stress. Results are discussed in the context of chronic illness behavior and developmental tasks of adolescents and have implications for the provision of psychological services to this population.

Carr, Jonathan. "Familial adult myoclonus epilepsy : a clinical, neurophysiological and genetic study of a familial form of myoclonic epilepsy." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/1201.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (DMed (Medicine. Internal Medicine))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Progressive Myoclonic Epilepsies (PME) are characterized by progressive neurological impairment with myoclonus, seizures and dementia. In contradistinction, Familial Adult Myoclonic Epilepsy (FAME) is characterized by a benign course with rare seizures and cortical tremor. Both conditions have neurophysiological features suggestive of a cortical origin for their myoclonus. This dissertation reports on a novel form of PME. Many of those who were affected had no or minimal progression of their illness, low seizure frequency and were cognitively intact, suggestive of non-progressive disorders linked to the FAME loci. The majority of patients had features of cortical myoclonus, with generalized spike and wave discharges on electroencephalography, enlarged evoked potentials, enhanced C reflexes, and evidence of cortical excitability with magnetic stimulation. However, there was evidence of cerebellar dysfunction both pathologically and on imaging. With regard to similar conditions, dentatorubral pallidoluysian atrophy and Unverricht-Lundborg syndrome were excluded by linkage analysis. Similarly, linkage was not present for either the FAME 1 or FAME 2 loci. This syndrome is both clinically and genetically novel, and has a nosology which is difficult to characterize, in which the condition appears to lie on the spectrum between FAME and PME. The dissociation between the pathological and radiological findings which suggest subcortical dysfunction, and the neurophysiological findings of cortical myoclonus is striking. Review of the literature associated with the neurophysiology of related conditions associated with PME and FAME suggests that: 1. The assumption that generalized forms of myoclonic disorders represent multifocal forms of focal cortical discharges is an oversimplification. 2. The dissociation between initial and later components of the evoked potential is less robust than is generally supposed, and that subcortical inputs may affect later components of the evoked potential. 3. In a high proportion of cases the latency from cortical spike discharge to myoclonic jerk obtained with jerk locked averaging is incompatible with a cortical origin for the spike discharge. 4. The proposal that myoclonus is a form of long latency reflex and that myoclonus represents a reflex arising from subclinical sensory input, is unproven.

"Resilience in remarried families." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/50439.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2005.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Using a cross-sectional survey research design the present study aims to explore those resilience factors which enable remarried families to withstand and rebound from the disruptive challenges they face. Furthermore, recovery factors were examined which enabled remarried families to cope more effectively and to emerge har-dier___fr_om a crisis. Remarried families who were married between one to four years, with at least one family member presently in school, were approached to take part in this study. A parent and a child from 38 families independently completed six questionnaires and an open-ended question. It is proposed that the most important resilience factors identified in this study, through qualitative and quantitative measures, include (1) family relationships and support (mutual respect, cooperation and a loving bond), (2) family communication that is affirming, conveying care and support, as well as less incendiary communication that tends to exacerbate a stressful situation, (3) the ability to have a sense of control over outcomes in life by having a active orientation in adjusting to and managing stressful situations, (4) activities and routines that helps the family in spending time together and creating togetherness, (5) a strong marriage relationship (consisting of clearly defined roles, equality and support for each other), (6) support from family and friends, (7) internal and external handling of problems by redefining stressful events and acquiring and accepting social support, (8) spirituality and religion within the family that provides meaning and purpose beyond a crisis situation.

Abstract:
Based on Iain Chambers' observations in Migrancy, Culture, Identity (1994, pp. 6-24), the process of migration can be summarized as the relentless transformation of a single entity into multiple spaces and tempos while various histories of language, of politics, of culture and of experiences are distilled. The migrant then has to negotiate the shared occupation of the same new signs with the 'natives' of the new host country. This ongoing process is evident as each new community of migrants arrives in Australia. As each new generation matures, they contribute or distill elements of their home cultures into the fabric of multicultural Australian society. The genesis of Happy Families as a play could be attributed to what Chambers calls the 'relentless transformation' of my migrant family as it attempts to negotiate the spaces in the various communities into which it has been transplanted. This transformation has many facets; some painful, some pleasant, and all inevitable. Hence the play is an attempt to analyze the forces and the circumstances surrounding the transformation such as the issue of assimilation with the attendant loss of cultural roots and the recent unprecedented rise in racial tensions in multicultural societies like Australia.

Abstract:
The research and training works of the XIII Congress of the International Association for Training and Research in Family Education (AIFREF) were guided by the term 'Service'; more specifically, of setting oneself at the service of childhood. Devoting oneself to the service of those pursuing the path towards independence is an aspect that is given great prominence in the modern world. We now find ourselves facing a profound transformation: entering the postmodern age, we realise that the concept of service has a completely different connotation. In order to offer an enhanced service to childhood, we have to be aware of what could be useful. What allows the child to grow up and become free? And, consequently what services do we need to create for children? How relevant, efficient, effective and sustainable are these services, consciously designed and rendered operational? These are some of the issues addressed within the framework of the works of the XIII AIFREF Congress.

Abstract:
Women from the Ricasoli and Spinelli families formed a wide variety of social networks within and beyond Florence through their letters as they negotiated interpersonal relationships and lineage concerns to actively contribute to their families in early modern Italy. Women were located at the center of social networks through their work in bridging their natal and marital families, cultivating commercial contacts, negotiating family obligations and the demands of religious institutions, facilitating introductions for family and friends, and forming political patronage ties. This book argues that a network model offers a framework of analysis in which to deconstruct patriarchy as a single system of institutionalized dominance in early modern Italy. Networks account for female agency as an interactive force that shaped the kinships ties, affective relationships, material connections, and political positions of these elite families as women constructed their own narratives and negotiated their own positions in family life.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter examines emerging trends among transnational Bangladeshi families in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries through an interdisciplinary lens. Drawing on semi-structured interviews and fieldwork, it explores the lived experiences, challenges, and adaptations of these families in navigating the complexities of migration and cultural transitions. Key themes include the perks and hardships of urban life, evolving gender roles, access to education, marriage patterns, and the psychological impacts of familial separation. The findings shed light on the interplay between economic motivations and emotional factors, highlighting the significance of non-economic considerations in migration research and the need for amplified scholarly investigations into the multifaceted realities of transnational families.

Abstract:
Abstract This first conceptional chapter illuminates the complex relationship between paid and unpaid work within families, a dynamic reflected in diverse family models. The specific allocation of tasks is examined, taking into account factors such as job value, gender equality ideals, and the interplay between gainful employment and caregiving responsibilities. The thesis centres around the concept of family models, with particular focus on the universal caregiver family model, which is described as the egalitarian ideal and serves as the goal of family policy in both the theoretical discussion and empirical analysis. Before exploring family models, I first examine the different types of work and their interactions, setting the stage for a comprehensive understanding of the complexities shaping familial structures.

Alves, Helena, Rainer Behrens, and Larry Paul. "Evolution of Nickel Base Alloys – Modification to Traditional Alloys for Specific Applications." In CORROSION 2014. NACE International, 2014. https://doi.org/10.5006/c2014-4317.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Nickel alloys have been used for many demanding applications for over 100 years now. In the early days most of the alloy families that we are now familiar with were established, such as Ni-Cu, Ni-Cr-Mo, Ni-Mo, Ni-Cr-Fe, and Ni-Fe-Cr-Mo alloys, of which some are still used today. These fundamental alloy families have been the basis for numerous new alloys, each targeted for specific applications. As nickel alloys are today a very mature field of study, most recent developments have been evolutionary in nature rather than revolutionary. This paper describes two recent developments that show how changes still can be made to established nickel alloys to further improve their performance in certain applications. The first example is a Ni-Fe-Cr-Mo-Cu alloy (UNS(1) N08031) that was modified to improve the fabrication characteristics of the material with the result of new alloy chemistry. It is important that when improving the fabrication characteristics the corrosion behavior of the material is maintained or even slightly improved. This requirement was met with the modified new alloy version of UNS N08031. The second example is a new Ni-Cr-Mo alloy (UNS N06058) that was developed with improved localized corrosion resistance and increased uniform corrosion resistance in certain acids over the Ni-Cr-Mo alloys in common use up until now. In this case corrosion resistance and mechanical properties were deliberately improved, while good fabrication and weldability characteristics were maintained. Alloy UNS N06058 is the most recent member of the so called C-family of alloys and the first Ni-Cr-Mo alloy to contain nitrogen as an alloying constituent. In addition, it contains the highest molybdenum content (around 19%) of this alloy family resulting in an excellent corrosion resistance in reducing environments. Together with the chromium and the increased molybdenum content the alloying of nitrogen results in a pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) of about 86, surpassing all other Ni-Cr-Mo alloys.

Abstract:
The study focuses on the variability in coffee sensory evaluation results across different environments. Two groups of tasters were selected to assess their performance in three types of settings: familiar and comfortable, with ambient noise, and with distinctive aromas. Although no notable anomalies were found in the scores attributed to the coffee, a discrepancy in the results of two tasters was observed, suggesting a potential influence of the environment on their sensory perceptions. However, statistical analyses did not show significant differences based on the environment. These findings highlight the importance of understanding the interaction between environmental factors and sensory experience to enhance the objectivity and reliability of coffee sensory.

Abstract:
This literature review explores the current state of research on positive contributions and social support among families with children with disabilities in mainland China. Positive contributions refer to the beneficial impact on family dynamics and cohesion achieved through positive interactions with the child. International studies suggest that these contributions can enhance family happiness, while domestic research in China predominantly highlights negative aspects, such as the pressures these families encounter. The review methodology involves analyzing both qualitative and quantitative studies on family quality of life, social support, and positive contributions. Sources include academic journals, policy reports, and research articles, with a thematic synthesis conducted to identify differences in international and Chinese perspectives, alongside specific cultural influences. Social support, crucial in helping families manage stress, plays a pivotal role in fostering positive contributions. Emotional, instrumental, and informational support types have shown to mitigate family stress and encourage adaptive growth. In China, however, parents, especially of children with autism, often rely on limited informal support, which fails to meet all their needs. Cultural factors, such as collectivism, family obligation, and Confucian values, deeply influence family responses and perceptions of social support. Disabilities are frequently stigmatized, pushing families to focus on internal support networks and avoid seeking external aid. This cultural backdrop shapes the availability and nature of support, affecting how positive contributions are experienced. In conclusion, while international research increasingly acknowledges the positive contributions of children with disabilities, Chinese studies remain more concerned with challenges. Future research in China should explore how social support mechanisms could amplify positive contributions, helping improve societal attitudes toward these families and enhancing their overall well-being.

Abstract:
The presented aim of paper is focused on the implementation of virtual and augmented reality elements into the training of future pilots. To understand the issues related to these technologies, in its introduction, the thesis focuses on identifying the differences between virtual reality and augmented reality. The next part of the thesis focuses on the analysis of the use of virtual and augmented reality in civil aviation. The following section deals with the creation of a virtual environment for the purpose of training of future pilots. The creation of the virtual environment is divided into two parts. The first part concerns the creation of the virtual cockpit of the selected aircraft. This will allow pilots in training to become familiar with the layout of the on-board instruments and controls. The second part of the proposed virtual environment allows pilots to practice checklists. Checklists are a critical skill for every pilot. At the end of the thesis, feedback from the students is presented.

Abstract:
The Master’s Thesis presented an image-based approach to estimate the speed of moving vessels from their traces on the water surface. Vessels moving at constant heading and speed display a familiar V-shaped pattern which only differs from one to another by the wavelength of their transverse and divergent components. Such wavelength is related to vessel speed. We use planar homography and natural constraints on the geometry of ships’ wake troughs to compute vessel speed from single optical images acquired by conventional cameras. Experiments show that our approach produces compelling results, which are in accordance with true data available for the observed vessels.

Full text
Abstract:
Nearly all neural networks for pattern recognition being dealt with today are associative classifier or identifier networks that are not cognitive. To be cognitive a net must be able to distinguish, on its own, between familiar and unfamiliar or novel sensory signals present at its input, and this can not be done by associative classifiers. It will be argued and shown that, to be truly cognitive, a network must be nonlinear and dynamic and able to manifest bifurcation. This means it should be able to carry out phase space computations with more than one type of attractor and to switch between these depending on whether the sensory input is familiar or novel. Cognition implies, therefore, bifurcation and computing with diverse attractors. Our reasons for adopting this view, which stemmed from known biophysical observations and from our neuromorphic target identification work, are discussed. An example of a cognitive network that computes with both stationary (limit point) and dynamic (periodic) attractors is given to illustrate our thesis. The elements of a neuromorphic radar target identification system which employs these concepts and is capable of distortion invariant recognition of three targets with perfect score is presented. The work presented elucidates the role of periodic attractors in feature binding and cognition and the significance of cognition in autonomous systems.

Abstract:
Communication skills are very important for engineers, especially when they need to justify professional choices by developing arguments in written documents. Engineering students at Universidad del Norte learn how to write argumentative documents in the second semester. However, when students reach their senior year, their communication skills do not show their previous training. The paper presents preliminary results of a diagnosis of this skill in engineering students of different programs, different semesters and two different universities. The methodology for the diagnosis consisted in asking students to first read documents on a particular subject, and then, in the classroom, to write an argumentative essay about the same topic. All students used computers and submitted their essays digitally. The professors evaluated the essays by using a predefined rubric. Results show the students have a low level in academic writing and argument developing. Few students properly cited their sources and no essay fulfilled the minimum requirements for an argumentative document. Noticeably, even though all students employed word processor software, they did not use grammar or style check features. As a consequence, the research team believes that students may not be familiar with these tools. Additionally, students do not allow time for the text to settle before verifying the document, or they do not correct it before submission. Regarding formal aspects of the argument document, fifty percent of the students do not include a thesis in the introduction. Nonetheless, in most cases the research team identified some statements that could form or be understood as a pseudo-thesis. Essays in general lack evidences and facts to support the arguments. Moreover, most essays did not provide a conclusion where they clearly set the reader in a context and they did not resume the thesis.

Abstract:
As architects and historians of architecture we are all acquainted with major sea changes in our discipline. The birth of Modernism and the advent of Post modernism’ are two episodes of our recent history familiar to most ofus. Customarily however we focus upon the content of such changes rather than the protocols they obey. I talk of protocols rather than rules because I shall argue that these are not a natural given but a product of cultural2 propriety. It is my thesis that there are protocols for such changes, which if not invariant are subject to modifications themselves that are only manifest over long periods of time. I further contend that the structures of the institutions of architecture, the building industry, the profession, the academy and the architectural press for example and of their relation to culture at large have a more powerfidly formative influence on the nature of such changes than any individual, group or movement. This paper can provide but a mere outline and brief illustration of these broad claims.

Abstract:
The phenomenon of creating new lyrics for folk songs provides an interesting combination between the two fields of linguistics and ethnomusicology (or performing arts) and is highly applicable for life in Vietnam. This research aims at the meaning of choosing folk melodies to express language and to express an ideological content. Based on the thesis of linguistic anthropology, considering language to be a reflection of the human being, this study considers the choice of the way language is transmitted as part of that reflection. To conduct this study, we will look at the Voice of Vietnam Radio. From the material found, the number, content, purpose, context analysis and frequency of creating new lyrics for folk songs were broadcast during the history of anti-American war to teh preent date. The results of the study indicate that language has a number of ways of expressing each of its strengths and cultural and social meanings. This research refers to an innovation in the use of familiar folk melodies to express and promote language content in Vietnam that has been applied effectively in the mass media.

Abstract:
Turkey has been going through significant transformations over the last two decades, which might be studied under diverse rubrics. The focus in this paper is on the emergence of a new bourgeoisie that is overwhelmingly religious; its aim is to describe the motives behind the at- titudes of religious business people and to discuss the contribution of the Gülen movement. The paper begins by clarifying relevant concepts that appear vague – such as ‘Islamic Puritanism’ and ‘Islamic work ethic’ – following the particular interpretation by Wilhelm Hennis of Max Weber’s familiar ‘Protestant ethic’ thesis. Rather than looking for mechani- cal causal relationships, this paper focuses on life goals and ways of living and discusses the Gülen movement’s contribution to the way of living related to economic activities. (The movement is considered as a new interpretation of Islam – Turkish and strongly influenced by Sufism.) Next, the institutional and moral sources enabling an enterprise culture are dis- cussed. This paper considers the transformation in Turkey to be securely founded on the moral sources and suggests that Turkish Islam might be considered as a source enabling a particular type of entrepreneurs, and that this type is helpful to Turkey’s modernisation project as it anticipates membership of the European Union.
