Powson, Heidi. "Filipino families in Australia." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 1995. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/35849/1/35849_Powson_1995.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The Filipino community is one of the most rapidly expanding non-English speaking background communities in Australia: a young vibrant community, well educated and qualified, possessing exceptional English language proficiency.Because of a significant proportion of Filipino-Australian intermarriage, and a large family-oriented immigration trend, many unique cross-cultural and social issues have emerged in the Filipino community. An examination of the literature revealed that many aspects on Filipino immigration to Australia are disproportionately studied, leading to the perpetuation of stereotypes and myths. There has been a tendency to focus on Filipino wives (not women), without reference to Filipino men, or to cultural values and experiences of Filipino families. The main objective of this study was to provide a broad sociological survey of Filipino immigrant families and latter generations in Australia. This study analysed the amalgamation of Filipino and Australian cultures through diverse family structures, and highlighted both differences and commonalities. The recognition of Filipino immigrants as active agents in their own settlement, provided an understanding of the adaptive reconstitution of Philipino culture through family interactions, child-rearing practices, employment and intergenerational experiences. An historical and cross-cultural perspective has employed to analyse the development of Filipino immigration to Australia and the socio-cultural issues affecting Filipino families.

Kartje, Michael J. "PASSED DOWN: MASCULINE FAMILIAL RELATIONS IN FILM." OpenSIUC, 2014. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/theses/1491.

Abstract:
My short narrative film Passed Down follows three generations of men in a family: a son, a father and a grandfather. Composed of four short scenes, the film focuses on the three characters as they work through issues of masculinity, passed down from one generation to the next. My film suggests that this cultural sharing is part of a much larger set of social boundaries that help define what it is to "be a man". These scenes reflect my own personal experience with this phenomenon, as a son and as a father myself.

Weiner, Kate. "Patient and professional constructions of familial hypercholesterolaemia and heart disease : testing the limits of the geneticisation thesis." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2006. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/10190/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides an empirical investigation of the geneticisation thesis. Geneticisation is one of the most prominent critiques of the social and cultural implications of developments in genetics. It incorporates a set of claims and expectations about the way genetic knowledge and technologies are transforming or will transform ideas about health and illness, and health care practices. This research aims to explore the empirical basis of these claims, by looking at the place of genetic discourses and practices in one specific area. The thesis focuses on familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH), a treatable hereditary cholesterol condition associated with high rates of coronary heart disease (CHD). It asks how much and in what ways patients with FH and professionals involved with the condition construct FH and CHD as genetic conditions. The thesis draws on three main areas of data - biomedical literature concerning CHD and FH; ethnographic work concerning the activities of HEART UK, the main UK health charity involved with inherited lipid disorders and cholesterol; and interviews with patients with FH and with staff and members of HEART UK. The analysis suggests that FH is not understood or managed within a strong genetic frame, and that neither professionals involved in HEART UK, nor patients with FH, provided or contributed to radically new or geneticised accounts of CHD. In short, the research suggests that geneticisation overstates the transformatory potential of genetics, and that factors such as the availability of effective therapeutics, the sites where care takes place, the disciplines involved, and existing lay and professional models of disease are important for the construction of a particular field. Furthermore, in arguing that FH is not associated with a strong specific disease identity or community, the analysis questions the notion of biosociality, suggesting that is may be less relevant to some biological states or conditions than to others.

Molefi, Stanley. "Families’ experiences with schizophrenia." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/2567.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MA (Psychology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Families of people with schizophrenia often experience difficult challenges when it comes to dealing with this illness. Contemporary researchers suggest that families often take on the task of caring for their ill relatives with limited resources and support. Mental health professionals often fail to include the families in the treatment of their relatives. Although psychoeducation has been shown to be an important process that helps not only the families but relatives as well, mental health professionals commonly do not involve families in such activities. This study explored the experiences of families of people with schizophrenia and their subsequent contact with mental health professionals, as well as their understanding of schizophrenia as a mental disorder. To this end, a small sample of 10 families (four Xhosa speaking families as well as six Coloured families) was drawn in the Western Cape area on a convenience basis. In each case a family caregiver was interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire. Data were content analyzed. The findings of the study indicate that families find it difficult to deal with their ill relatives. Families often experience stigma-related incidents because of their relatives. They feel isolated and alone. Families often yearn to receive more information about the illness of their relatives. Also, the contact between mental health professionals and families was reported to be minimal at best. Family members reported that mental health professionals do not include them in the treatment process. Recommendations for further research and practice are made.

Abstract:
The last twenty years has seen a significant improvement in the physical health of sufferers of Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) due to advances in medical assessment, diagnosis and treatment. Children with CHD are living longer into adolescence and adulthood. Research now assesses the psychosocial development of this population. Two studies were conducted: phase one used qualitative research analyses to interview adolescents (N=6) about their experiences with CHD. A number of themes emerged: CHD defines sense of identity and experience of the disease generates apprehension. Phase 2 used quantitative analysis to measure experiences of Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) and psychopathology in a larger sample (N-42). Older adolescents were more likely to experience negative mood, anger, poorer cognitive and social functioning. A number of HRQoL scales were related to depression, anxiety and stress. Results are discussed in the context of chronic illness behavior and developmental tasks of adolescents and have implications for the provision of psychological services to this population.

Carr, Jonathan. "Familial adult myoclonus epilepsy : a clinical, neurophysiological and genetic study of a familial form of myoclonic epilepsy." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/1201.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (DMed (Medicine. Internal Medicine))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Progressive Myoclonic Epilepsies (PME) are characterized by progressive neurological impairment with myoclonus, seizures and dementia. In contradistinction, Familial Adult Myoclonic Epilepsy (FAME) is characterized by a benign course with rare seizures and cortical tremor. Both conditions have neurophysiological features suggestive of a cortical origin for their myoclonus. This dissertation reports on a novel form of PME. Many of those who were affected had no or minimal progression of their illness, low seizure frequency and were cognitively intact, suggestive of non-progressive disorders linked to the FAME loci. The majority of patients had features of cortical myoclonus, with generalized spike and wave discharges on electroencephalography, enlarged evoked potentials, enhanced C reflexes, and evidence of cortical excitability with magnetic stimulation. However, there was evidence of cerebellar dysfunction both pathologically and on imaging. With regard to similar conditions, dentatorubral pallidoluysian atrophy and Unverricht-Lundborg syndrome were excluded by linkage analysis. Similarly, linkage was not present for either the FAME 1 or FAME 2 loci. This syndrome is both clinically and genetically novel, and has a nosology which is difficult to characterize, in which the condition appears to lie on the spectrum between FAME and PME. The dissociation between the pathological and radiological findings which suggest subcortical dysfunction, and the neurophysiological findings of cortical myoclonus is striking. Review of the literature associated with the neurophysiology of related conditions associated with PME and FAME suggests that: 1. The assumption that generalized forms of myoclonic disorders represent multifocal forms of focal cortical discharges is an oversimplification. 2. The dissociation between initial and later components of the evoked potential is less robust than is generally supposed, and that subcortical inputs may affect later components of the evoked potential. 3. In a high proportion of cases the latency from cortical spike discharge to myoclonic jerk obtained with jerk locked averaging is incompatible with a cortical origin for the spike discharge. 4. The proposal that myoclonus is a form of long latency reflex and that myoclonus represents a reflex arising from subclinical sensory input, is unproven.

"Resilience in remarried families." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/50439.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2005.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Using a cross-sectional survey research design the present study aims to explore those resilience factors which enable remarried families to withstand and rebound from the disruptive challenges they face. Furthermore, recovery factors were examined which enabled remarried families to cope more effectively and to emerge har-dier___fr_om a crisis. Remarried families who were married between one to four years, with at least one family member presently in school, were approached to take part in this study. A parent and a child from 38 families independently completed six questionnaires and an open-ended question. It is proposed that the most important resilience factors identified in this study, through qualitative and quantitative measures, include (1) family relationships and support (mutual respect, cooperation and a loving bond), (2) family communication that is affirming, conveying care and support, as well as less incendiary communication that tends to exacerbate a stressful situation, (3) the ability to have a sense of control over outcomes in life by having a active orientation in adjusting to and managing stressful situations, (4) activities and routines that helps the family in spending time together and creating togetherness, (5) a strong marriage relationship (consisting of clearly defined roles, equality and support for each other), (6) support from family and friends, (7) internal and external handling of problems by redefining stressful events and acquiring and accepting social support, (8) spirituality and religion within the family that provides meaning and purpose beyond a crisis situation.

Abstract:
Based on Iain Chambers' observations in Migrancy, Culture, Identity (1994, pp. 6-24), the process of migration can be summarized as the relentless transformation of a single entity into multiple spaces and tempos while various histories of language, of politics, of culture and of experiences are distilled. The migrant then has to negotiate the shared occupation of the same new signs with the 'natives' of the new host country. This ongoing process is evident as each new community of migrants arrives in Australia. As each new generation matures, they contribute or distill elements of their home cultures into the fabric of multicultural Australian society. The genesis of Happy Families as a play could be attributed to what Chambers calls the 'relentless transformation' of my migrant family as it attempts to negotiate the spaces in the various communities into which it has been transplanted. This transformation has many facets; some painful, some pleasant, and all inevitable. Hence the play is an attempt to analyze the forces and the circumstances surrounding the transformation such as the issue of assimilation with the attendant loss of cultural roots and the recent unprecedented rise in racial tensions in multicultural societies like Australia.

Aslett, Michelle. "Fowl feathered fox: Monsters, pipers, families and flocks." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2015. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/1633.

Full text
Abstract:
Fowl Feathered Fox: Monsters, Pipers, Families and Flocks is a doctoral work consisting of a full-length stage play and an exegesis. An introduction outlines the scope of the doctoral work, while a concluding chapter reflects on research findings and considers staging issues and implications. Appendices include images incorporated into the play’s action as well as photographed excerpts from a series of visual diaries used to document the play’s evolution. The play, Fowl Feathered Fox, explores the nature of delusion, deception and the tragedy of The Beast Within. Borrowing as it does from the traditions of revenge tragedy, comedy and horror, the style of Fowl Feathered Fox is both sensual and sensationalistic. Indeed, by virtue of overstepping traditional ideological, stage and venue boundaries to tap into an audience’s faculties of taste, physical sensation and smell, I aim to confront, seduce and repel on every possible sensory level. Here, in keeping with the conventions of Renaissance revenge tragedies as well as contemporary re-imaginings of the genre in popular culture, a tragic protagonist is forced to behave as a detective in order to put an end to a terrible, taboo curse. As a black comedy however, Fowl Feathered Fox makes light of taboo topics, as the darkness of the subject matter is buoyed by meta-theatrical gags, ironic humour, word-play and brief forays into interpretive dance. In the tradition of horror film and fiction, my eponymous ‘fowl feathered fox’ is a specifically Australian re-imagining of the archetypal shapeshifter, blending the qualities of the wolf in sheep’s clothing, the false prophet, the Pied Piper and the werewolf. Surrealism, with its roots in psychoanalysis, underscores the play’s visual aesthetic: this stage is littered with fearful, surgically invasive and aggressively sexual forms, objects and images. The exegesis, Monsters, Pipers, Families and Flocks, interrogates various mythic, historical and fictional examples of charismatic cult leadership, locating patterns in the paradigmatic nexus shared by monsters, cults and families. A trio of exegetical essays considers the tragic nature of lycanthropy, Nietzsche’s conception of the Apollonian/ Dionysian dichotomy, the socio-cultural dynamics of charismatic cult leadership and the frightening, fascinating phenomenon of pseudologia fantastica. The first exegetical essay explores the lycanthropic and messianic qualities of two real-life malevolent cult leaders: Rock Theriault (Canada) and William Kamm (Australia). The second exegetical essay interrogates the enthralling, intoxicating qualities of the Pied Piper of Hamelin and Greek demi-god Dionysus, finding parallels in tragic revenge narratives wrought by infamous American cult leaders such as Charles Manson and David Berg. Finally, the third exegetical essay examines monstrous, messianic mothers from Greek myth, horror fiction and memoir: specifically, the goddess Demeter, Margaret White from Brian de Palma’s Carrie (1976) and notorious Australian cult leader, Anne Hamilton-Byrne.

Landskron, Rolf. "Common-law and civil-law legal families : a misleading categorisation." ePublications@bond, 2008. http://epublications.bond.edu.au/theses/landskron.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines common-law and civil-law jurisdictions in order to find differences between them. These differences are then being qualified as either relevant or irrelevant for the categorisation of individual jurisdictions. This reflects the argument that only features occurring in only one of the legal families can be relevant when categorising jurisdictions. Only such features can be, from the author’s point of view, specific and typical for their legal family and inherent features of them. The first thing to be considered under this premise is the respective sources of law (Chapter 1). These are in civil-law jurisdictions traditionally statutes and in commonlaw jurisdictions predominantly courts’ decisions. There are, of course, statutes also in common-law jurisdictions and previous courts’ decisions play an important role also in civil-law systems. The differences are not inherent. Furthermore, there are fundamental legal concepts, that is important concepts underlying the respective rules. These concepts may explain differences between the rules. The examination of sources of law, altogether, does not reveal any distinguishing factors.Chapters 2–5 discuss the issue of attitudes of common-law and civil-law judges to statutory interpretation. Chapter 2 examines the respective methods of statutory interpretation. This does not reveal any differences as to common-law and civil-law judges’ attitudes; for instance, greater adherence of common-law judges to the literal meaning of rules arguably does not exist. As shown in Chapter 3, this is true also in the area of Criminal Law under the special safeguards this subject provides. Chapter 4 asserts terminology causes differences between the systems; this is true even in case of identical terminology which is sometimes being interpreted in a diametrically different way. Moreover, differences can also be compensated for elsewhere in the legal system. Altogether, Chapter 4 does not reveal any inherent differences between the systems. As Chapter 5 shows, there is an ongoing process of convergence between common-law and civil-law systems, which means the categorisation into legal families becomes even less plausible.Chapter 6 shows that the categorisation into legal families is not only incorrect but also highly misleading and that there are numerous scholarly statements relying incorrectly on the family concept. The proposition (Chapter 7) is that it may nevertheless be feasible to structure comparative-law texts according to the wellknown legal families, as these show a common historical background. However, for conducting research into particular foreign legal rules (micro-comparative research), the family concept becomes a misleading starting-point. Insofar the concept should be abandoned or, at least, used only together with an appropriate warning.

Lyon 3, 2009. https://scd-resnum.univ-lyon3.fr/in/theses/2009_in_faivre_r.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
In a context where the family is losing ground to the individual, the study highlights the emergence of a requirement for cohabitants to provide each other with financial support. Marriage serves as an example on which French public authorities model forms of common-law union and “civil solidarity pacts” (equivalent to British Civil Partnerships). With the development of a family model of the couple founded on financial interdependence, French legislators are paving the way for a new set of family laws based on pragmatic economic and social principles. However, this modelling is flawed and brings to light inconsistencies in the current legal treatment of the different forms of union. A critical and forward-thinking analysis, the study identifies mutual financial commitments as being at stake in the contemporary legal treatment of the various forms of partnership, but equally refutes the notion of any adherence to a single approach. The study envisages the possibility of legal codes of collaboration and financial protection adapted to the different forms of union. Diversity, fairness, freedom, legal security and commitment are the guiding principles. The study leads to a reaffirmation of the principle of free-choice which presides over common-law unions, thus excluding any notion of the formalisation of one set of rules for the family, arguing instead in favour of the conservation of informal unions within the sphere of common law and of conventional obligations of financial support. The study proposes the introduction of a requirement for economic collaboration throughout the duration of the union, acknowledged by spouses and partners, and adapted to the individuals' expectations, thus reconciling mutual obligations with independence. Recognising the need for individual protection upon the dissolution of a partnership, this legal framework aims to provide an answer to the economic, social and demographic questions at stake in contemporary France

Human, Berquin. "Resilience in families in which a parent has died." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/52434.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2001.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The death of a parent calls on the family to utilize all its resources in order to adapt successfully and maintain normal family functioning. Within the mental health field a paradigm-shift from pathology-based to health-oriented is underway. Integral to this health-oriented paradigm is resilience, the ability to rebound after being stressed or challenged, as well as being able to rise above adversity and to survive stress. Family resilience theory emphasizes the role that family characteristics, behaviour patterns and capabilities play in cushioning the impact of stressful life events and in assisting the family in recovering from crises (McCubbin, Thompson, & McCubbin, 1996). Using a crosssectional survey research design, the present study aimed to explore and explicate those resiliency factors which enable families to adjust and adapt successfully after the loss of a parent. Families in which the death of a parent took place 1 to 3 years ago, and in which the eldest child was between 12 and 19 years old were approached to take part in this study. Thirty nine families completed questionnaires, as well as an open-ended question in which they were asked to report the most important factors or strengths which they felt helped their family through the stressful period. Results indicate that intrafamilial support such as emotional and practical support amongst family members, and family hardiness characteristics such as the internal strengths and durability of the family unit, contribute to resilience within the family. Individual characteristics, such as positive personality characteristics like optimism, are as important. Support from extended family and friends, as well as support obtained from religious and spiritual beliefs and activities, were reported as facilitating successful adjustment to the loss.

Smith, P. N. "Resilience in Xhosa families." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/1478.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (DPhil (Psychology))—University of Stellenbosch, 2006.
This study addresses unprivileged dichotomies in an endeavour to make audible the silence surrounding Xhosa family resilience. This study is essentially descriptive and exploratory in nature and directed towards an understanding of the factors contributing to the resilience of Xhosa-speaking, rural black South African families. To contextualise the discussion a selection of theories on resilience are viewed within their cultural contexts. Western psychology’s privileging of a) the scrutiny of pathology while disregarding resilience; of b) white participants to black participants; and c) individuality to relationship centeredness and familial systems; are uncovered and a hypothetical understanding of Xhosa family resilience is construed. The line of thought culminates in the theoretical discussion and empirical exploration of The Resiliency Model of Family Stress, Adjustment and Adaptation (McCubbin, Thompson, & McCubbin, 1996). In the concluding remarks of this project an adaptation of this model, namely the Resiliency Model of Family Stress, Strength, Adjustment and Adaptation, is construed. The derived model is based on an integration of the findings of this study with resilience theory.

This is the story of Beth. And Beth's father, Jack. Her earliest memory is of her mother making a lot of noise. At first it makes her cry. Then her mother is there, picking her up and rocking her. Her mother is warm and soft. 'It's all right, it's all right Bethy.' She puts her hand up to feel the red stuff on her mother's mouth. It sticks to her fingers. Wet and warm. It tastes of salt when she puts them in her mouth. Her mother smiles and Bethy is happy. Then her father puts his hand, and it is a big hand, on her head and sings. 'Tu ra Lura Lura. Tu ra lu ra li. Tu ra lu ra lu ra.' He sings the lullaby. She likes the sound of his singing and it makes her sleepy. Beth falls asleep in her mother's arms but it is her father's voice in her head.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis was to develop methodologies and procedures for the construction and use of CAD part families. This project uses the software CADDS5 created by Computervision, Inc., and its "Family of Parts" module. This software allows the creation of an entire family of similar parts using a single parametric master model and a text file containing the necessary parameters for each member of the family. CADDS5 users at Raytheon were surveyed to determine how they use standard parts, what types of standard parts are used, and typical modeling strategies. A set of criteria were developed to determine which groups of parts would be good candidates to be used as test cases. Four test cases were used to develop the methodology or procedure for the creation of families of parts. In addition, efficient use of these part families required the development of a set of search engines to allow the users to find parts more easily, and a parts server to generate new family members. The Family of Parts software in CADDS5 serves as a starting point for the creation of a usable library of standard parts. However, it has a poor user interface and has no system for part management and database administration. This thesis has made up for several of these shortcomings, and has created the core of a working library that can be easily used by all of the designers without requiring detailed knowledge of the details behind the implementation. The methodology developed during this project provides the necessary information for designers to create the majority of standard parts in use at Raytheon. For those who want to expand the library, it has provided useful information that will help them create high-quality parts that will work well with this system.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MA (Psychology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Family resilience refers to the family’s ability to overcome adversity using inherent and/or acquired strengths and resources. The aim of this study was to identify factors contributing to the successful adaptation, or resilience, of families following the birth or diagnosis of a child with a developmental disability. The study is based on the theoretical frameworks of family resilience proposed by McCubbin and McCubbin (1996) and Walsh (2003), namely the Family Resiliency Model of Family Stress, Adjustment and Adaptation and the Family Resilience Framework. The study population in this study comprised 40 families with a child with a developmental disability living in the Boland region of the Western Cape. One parent from each family was asked to complete a number of quantitative measuring instruments and answer an open-ended question aimed at identifying the strengths and resources contributing to the family’s adaptation. Quantitative data was analysed through analyses of variance, Pearson product-moment correlations and a multiple regression analysis. The qualitative data was analysed using thematic content analysis. These analyses revealed that an acceptance of the situation, positive patterns of family communication, commitment and support within the family unit, and a positive attitude with regard to new experiences and challenges facilitate family adaptation and resilience, while negative patterns of communication within the family were found to be inversely related to family adaptation. An inverse association was also found between age of the child with a disability and family adaptation. These findings suggest some possible avenues of intervention by which the adaptation of families with a child with a developmental disability in South Africa can be facilitated or supported.

Abstract:
This study gained the perspective of children from single parent families and explored their family communication patterns. An inductive, qualitative approach was used. Interviews were conducted with eleven participants gathered from undergraduate classes, who had lived with their single parent for a minimum of 3 years. Four major themes emerged from the data: communication, challenges and triumphs, structure, and how parents came to be single. The majority of participants appeared to exhibited pluralistic family communication patterns. Results also revealed the importance of open communication in single parent families and what they learned through their experiences living with their custodial parent. Limitations and directions for future research will also be discussed.

Abstract:

Hadwen, Kate Margaret. "Leaving home: Investigating transitioning challenges faced by boarding students and their families." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2015. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/1628.

Full text
Abstract:
Transitioning to boarding school during the middle years of childhood impacts upon the social, emotional and academic wellbeing of young people (Bramston & Patrick, 2007; Connell & Wellborn, 1991; Deci, Vallerand, Pelletier, & Ryan, 1991; Earls & Carlson, 2001). Students who live at school as boarders, may experience greater transitional changes in all three components of wellbeing due to the extent of change experienced during this transition. While research addressing transitioning to school has indicated the importance of connectedness to school, bonding, friendships and a sense of autonomy (Eccles et al., 1993), there is limited research addressing the transitioning experiences of boarding students and their families. This mixed methodology study sought to understand how boarding students experience transitioning into boarding school, its possible association with connectedness to the boarding house, reported levels of staff support, loneliness, homesickness and help-seeking for homesickness. Focus groups and interviews were used to better understand how parents experience the transitioning of their children into boarding school. This thesis used data collected from a Healthway funded Starter Grant. The research was cross-sectional by design involving a purposeful sample of 267 students, 59% male and 41% female, aged 12 - 15 years, who lived in one of eight metropolitan and regional boarding settings in Western Australia (WA) in 2011, and 37 of their parents. Data for this project were collected from October, 2010 to September, 2011 The first research question used qualitative data to explore the experiences of boarding parents. Findings suggested parents appeared to be more affected by their children leaving home than did the majority of boarding students. The following strategies were suggested as helpful to support positive transitions: preparing both parents and their children effectively for the move; making contact with other boarding parents at least six months prior to the transition; having meaningful connections with the staff caring for their children communicating and visiting their children regularly; co-developing with their children communication and visiting plans; and, keeping busy. Research questions two to five analysed quantitative data collected through a student survey. The following transitioning activities were found to be either very helpful and / or associated with other benefits (as listed above): tour of the boarding house; sleepover with or without parents; separate information targeting students and parents sent or given to boarding families, up to date information on the Internet; Orientation Day; peer mentors; staff telephoning students prior to transition; and, boarding staff meeting with each family individually on or following Orientation Day. Homesickness was most commonly experienced during the first two weeks of boarding and when students returned after their holidays. Girls, younger students and International students reported experiencing more homesickness. Three factors: psychosomatic symptoms; separation distress; and, grief and loss, best explained how students in this study experienced homesickness. Help-seeking behaviours comprised the factors contacting parents, keeping busy and conversing with staff and students. A number of activities were associated with reductions in both psychosomatic symptoms and separation distress; however, for those students who experienced grief and loss, going on leave with their parents and knowing when their parents would next be visiting or taking them on leave appeared to be the only activities that reduced students’ grief response. Help-seeking was most evident for students who experienced psychosomatic symptoms or feelings of separation distress. Students who experienced grief and loss were less likely to report seeking help. Girls and younger students reported utilising the most help-seeking strategies. The findings of this study and the subsequent recommendations will assist families and staff to better understand the experiences of boarding students and their families as students transition into boarding.

Moloney, Adrianne. ""Family" as Constructed by Adoptees After Making Contact with Their Birth Families." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 1998. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/238.

Full text
Abstract:
Legislative changes during the 1980s and 1990s opened confidential adoption files of the past enabling many adoptees and relinquishing parents to establish contact. This study examines the way in which the meaning of family is constructed by adoptees who have made contact with their birth relatives, and how these constructions were altered after contact. The ways in which biological and social definitions of family are constructed and contested in these settings is explored. Sociological definitions of family are discussed and the gap between ideal notions of 'family' and the lived experience of 'family' is explored. The study focuses on the process by which people are assigned as family. It explores what 'family' means to those involved in the study and the criteria they employ to construct their meanings of 'family'.
