Abstract:
Danish family names seem to be easy to understand and interpret. The 50 most frequent Danish family names are carried by 70% of the Danish population, all of which end with the typical suffix –sen. Thus, other means than the family name are used to distinguish people carrying the same name, namely the first name and the middle name (e. g. Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the name of the Danish Prime Minister). The history of laws concerning Danish family names is long, starting as early as 1526. Since then, six different laws were passed in 1828, 1857, 1898, 1904, 1961, and most recently, in 2005. All of these aimed at a diversification of the Danish name landscape. Today, every name that is carried by more than 2000 people, can be chosen by those who wish to change their family name. In the first year after the new law has been in force, 40000 Danes changed their family names and the authorities are expecting equally high numbers of applications for name changes in the coming years.

Mit den Niederlanden sind hier nicht die heutigen Niederlande - gewöhnlich aber fälschlich Holland genannt - gemeint, sondern die historische Niederlande, die die heutigen Niederlande (N) und Belgien (B) umfassen. Da Migration immer stattgefunden hat, sind im Laufe der Jahrhunderte zahlreiche Bewohner deutschsprachiger Länder in niederländisches Gebiet eingewandert. Vor etwa 1800 war der Familienname noch nicht zu etwas Unabänderlichen erstarrt. Er konnte z. B. übersetzt werden.

Abstract:
The first stratum of Spanish surnames in Germany goes back to Spanish soldiers fighting on German soil during the wars of the 16th and 17th centuries, the second one to Jewish immigrants of Spanish (and Portuguese) origin, who settled down in Northern Germany around 1600, and the third one to workers' immigration and exile in the second half of the 20th century. Special attention is given to the last stratum (problems connected with the use of telephone directories as a source, frequent Spanish surnames in present Germany, tendencies of linguistic integration).

Wer zu den deutschen Familiennamen forschen oder sich auch nur über Herkunft und Verbreitung einzelner Namen und ihrer Varianten informieren will, kann, ohne sich mit den Ergebnissen des Deutschen Familiennamenatlas (DFA) auseinanderzusetzen, künftighin schwerlich zu akzeptablen Einsichten gelangen. In unserer Besprechung des den Patronymen gewidmeten Bandes 61 hatten wir zusammenfassend festgestellt: „Die Bedeutung des siebenbändigen Deutschen Familiennamenatlas – das noch ausstehende Register mit Apparat eingerechnet – kann sowohl hinsichtlich seiner Entstehung als auch in Bezug auf die erzielten Ergebnisse gar nicht überschätzt werden“, bietet dieses Werk „vor allem eine beeindruckende Zusammenschau, sozusagen eine letztmögliche ,Gesamtaufnahme‘, der historisch gewachsenen deutschen Anthroponymie.

Abstract:
Examination of anthroponymic material of Jews from Bialystok shows that surnames of typically nickname charakter include surnames describing man's behaviour, his character, faults and virtues as well as surnames alluding to his physical appearance or physical infirmity. They also include insulting surnames devised by clerks to humiliate. Other surnames made on the basis of an appellative lexis usually relate to biblical events, animal, plant and material symbols and metaphors or serve to hide identity. To establish their nickname nature, unequivocal information about motivation, choice and conferment of such names is necessary.

Abstract:
Im Nachfolgenden werden einige Ausschnitt e aus den Untersuchungen der historischen Familiennamen in der Raabau angeführt. Die Raabau liegt in Nordwest-Transdanubien in Ungarn. Das Zentrum des Forschungsgebietes ist die Kleinstadt Kapuvár. Im 18. Jahrhundert befanden sich hier kleine Siedlungen mit ungefähr je Tausend Einwohnern. In diesem Gebiet wurde Personennamenforschung in 26 Siedlungen durchgeführt. Die Zusammensetz ung der Bevölkerung zeichnet sich durch ihre Homogenität aus. Die Bewohner der Raabau gehörten der katholischen Kirche an, und nach ihrer Herkunft waren sie Ungarn. Diese letz tere Feststellung muss im 18. Jahrhundert – wegen der historischen Lage von Ungarn in früheren Jahrhunderten – betont werden. Vor der Darstellung der Forschungsergebnisse wird ganz kurz die historische Lage von Ungarn erklärt.

Während früher Verbreitungskarten von Namen mühsam per Hand zu Papier gebracht wurden, um Forschungsergebnisse auf einen Blick präsentieren zu können, wird heute oftmals der umgekehrte Weg gegangen. Dank der EDV ist es möglich, digitale Karten innerhalb von Sekunden zu erstellen. Daher wird bei Untersuchungen zu z. B. Familiennamen zuerst einmal die Verbreitung erstellt und somit, über die Häufigkeit im geographischen Raum, das Gebiet der Herkunft lokalisiert.

In jüngster Zeit wurde die Häufigkeit von Familiennamen (FN) in geographischer Aufteilung verstärkt untersucht, vermutlich nicht zuletzt deshalb, weil mit Personalcomputern (PC) der erforderliche Rechenaufwand wesentlich verringert werden konnte. Mit Telefonverzeichnissen auf elektronischen Speichermedien (CD, Internet) entfällt zudem die aufwendige Datenerhebung. Nur selten wird jedoch danach gefragt, wie zuverlässig denn die Ergebnisse solcher Untersuchungen sein können. Das soll hier geschehen, denn die Verteilungskarten von FN sind nicht nur aus sprachwissenschaftlicher Sicht, sondern auch für den Genealogen interessant.

Abstract:
The article reviews vol. 6 of the significant Deutscher Familiennamenatlas (Atlas of German Surnames) by Kathrin Dräger. The book is considered to be an essential work on today’s patronymic surnames. By disclosing their structure and geographic distribution the author simultaneously takes an innovative approach to the occurence of the underlying first names in the (late) Middle Ages. Furthermore, the article emphasizes that the complete atlas as it now stands is not only a milestone in anthroponomastics but also a prime example of scientific organization and the sustainable promotion of junior scientists.

Abstract:
In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurden 2713 Familiennamen, welche aus den Bezirken Jurbarko, Plungės und Šakių stammen, dem Wörterbuch litauischer Familiennamen (Lietuvių pavardžių žodynas) entnommen und zur ihrer Struktur und Herkunft analysiert. Bei der Analyse werden die Familiennamen nach den zu analysierenden Merkmalen klassifiziert: zur Struktur wurden zwei Gruppen und zur Herkunft wurden vier Gruppen gebildet. Die Resultate der Analyse wurden statistisch bewerten und untereinander verglichen, wobei die Struktur- und Herkunftsähnlichkeit der Familiennamen in geografisch benachbarten Arealen (Bezirke Jurbarkas und Šakiai) und die Unterschiede zu den Familiennamen anderer Gebiete (Bezirk Plungė) deutlich wurden.

The city of Freiburg/Fribourg in western Switzerland has since its foundation in 1157 always been situated on the limit between the french and the german language. This fits also the canton of Fribourg, which counts one third german and two thirds french speaking inhabitants. The street and familynames as well as the geographical names are therefore mostly bilingual. Nevertheless the officially leading language could change during the centuries. The origin of the names went according to different scenarios: Immediate or later translation, borrowing and adaptation or sometimes one single name für both communities. Political motives made noble families translate their names whereas the generalisation of exonyms was due to the sens of order of ancient administration.

Abstract:
Given present-day distribution of the German family name Nobis in two main areas, the article examines its original meaning as far as the chiefly rural Erzgebirge region in the South West of Saxony is concerned. The author has his doubts about the widely held opinion that Nobis, derived from remote taverns of the same name (Nobiskrug, Nobishaus), is alleged to designate the ‘devil’, or rather, a person of this kind. Instead, the negating, slightly pejorative argot term nobis/Nobis involving the idea of smallness is taken up to explain this family name.

Abstract:
Surnames can be analyzed from three perspectives: as a linguistic sign (M+o+z+a+r+t), as a feature related to an individual (Leopold Mozart), or as a feature of a group (Leopold, Wolfgang, Konstanze Mozart). In this article, juridical regulations concerning these three aspects are discussed with special focus on the linguistic perspective. It is shown in which way juridical regulations influence the identification function of names and how they can lead to the impoverishment or the extension of a language’s surname inventory. From a linguist’s viewpoint, it is advisable to relax the strict juridical regulations relating to the use of personal names. Introducing personal numbers would facilitate this process.

Abstract:
Heretofore unknown and misinterpreted Sorbian surnames. In the first part of the article 38 previously unknown surnames found in archival sources in Upper Lusatia which were not taken into consideration earlier are explained. These include 1586 Tradell, Old Upper Sorbian *Tradula < *Stradula, to Proto-Slavic *stradati ‘to starve, suffer a shortage’, 1598 Twur, Old Upper Sorbian *Twoŕ < twoŕ , to Upper Sorbian tchor, Proto-Slavic *dъchorь ‘fitchew’, among others. They are also of special significance for the history of the Sorbian language. In the second part, upon critical perusal of the “Historical- etymological Dictionary” of “Studies of Sorbian Personal Names”, 104 names (1,3%) among the various 8.171 names listed, are rendered a new interpretation. These include for example 1568 Schorad, an old apotropaic name, 1422 Lemisch, an occupational nickname for the maker of plowshares. Several surnames are derived from place names, among them 1575 Zschygeran. In occasional instances a new interpretation resulted for the respective place name.

Work is in progress to create an Atlas of Lower Sorbian Surnames with approximately 70 colered name cards on the basis of circa 63.000 records of names taken from sources of the 14. to 18. century. The cards will include the surnames which developed from Slavic composita as well as from their contracted and/or affectionate forms, and in addition surnames derived from occupational names and official titles, and from nicknames and ethnonyms. A few cards will be dedicated to anthroponymic suffixes as well as to combined areals. Every card will have a commentary to verbally describe the geographical distribution of the names. Statistical data concerning the number of diverse names as well as bearers of the names provide information about the productivity of each anthroponymic basis, and in addition, their occurrence in deanthroponymic place names in Lower Lusatia will be included. The submitted paper presents an introduction to the subject, goal, method and initial results of our research to date. As an example, four colered cards illustrate the territorial distribution of 68 diverse surnames and two suffixes.
