Full textSome products share one or two modules and while developing these products, structural optimization with stiffness as the objective function can be a useful tool. There might be no or very little CAD-data available in the pre-development phase and it is not certain that existing designs can be, or is desirable to use as a reference. The main objective of this thesis is to establish an accurate and fast-to-use methodology which can be utilized while developing new cars.
In this thesis, the Volvo products S40, V50 and C70 serve as a basis for this case study. All the models are beam structures and the masses of components are added as point and line masses. Several optimization analyses are performed on one or three products exposed to seven load cases. Additional analyses with shell elements, more simplified models and changed load case balance achieved by normalization of the different load case compliances are also studied to investigate how these factors influence the results.
Analyses show that front crash to a great extent dominates the results while normalization increases the influence of the remaining load cases. Since front crash is dominating and the front area is shared in all products, the performance is remarkably similar when three products are optimized compared to separate analyses of one product. Analysis of models without added point or line masses gives a result which greatly differs from previous results and therefore shows that added masses are required. The methodology is applicable to develop products and detect new load paths through the car.

Full textCohabitation families have become a widely accepted and increasing form of family structure nowadays. However this family structure’s characteristics have caused it to be described as a risk factor to child development as it is associated it with negative child outcomes especially during the adolescence period. The adolescence stage itself has been described by literature as a unique human development stage coupled with a variety of physical, cognitive, social and emotional changes, making it a vulnerable stage characterised by experimenting with risk behaviours. Therefore the aim of this study was to explore and describe the challenges of cohabiting families with regard to discipline of the adolescents. An explorative and descriptive research design grounded in a qualitative research approach was used. Two set of data, namely (a) cohabiting biological parents, and (b) adolescent children living in cohabiting families, were collected for a better understanding of the situation. The population for the study encompassed all cohabiting parents and their adolescent children living in the city of Cape Town, and research participants were purposively selected from the caseload of Cape Town Child Welfare. Data was collected by means of individual interviews with the aid of an interview guide. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and field notes were taken. Data analysis was conducted according to Tesch (in Creswell 2009), and ethical considerations, such as confidentiality, voluntary participation, informed consent from parents and informed assent from adolescents, as well as no harm to participants, were adhered to. Most participants identified with cohabiting step-parent families. The reported challenges affecting discipline of adolescent children stemmed from poor parent-child relationships, ambiguous step-family roles, negative family communication patterns, and the applied disciplinary methods in cohabiting families. With consultation from some of the suggestions put forward by all the participants, the researcher concluded the study with recommendations for social workers working with cohabiting families.

Full textThis thesis consists of three papers on the economics and structure of Swedish families.
Paper [I] examines the determinants of children’s educational achievement in Sweden. Special attention is given to the labour market work by mothers and fa-thers in terms of its influence on the educational outcome of their children, measured as grade point average (GPA) in compulsory as well as upper secon-dary school. The results show that there is a positive relationship between paren-tal income and GPA. Regarding the number of hours worked in the labour mar-ket, the results differ between mothers and fathers. Having a mother that works less than full time has positive effects on the child’s grades throughout the schooling of the child, whereas significant effects of the hours of work that the father puts in are found during upper secondary school only.
Paper [II] explores the role of financial surprises and match quality in the disso-lution of relationships. The analysis is carried out both for surprises in the short term earnings and surprises in the long-run earnings capacity. It is found that positive surprises in short term earnings have a destabilizing effect for a rela-tionship. Generally, a negative surprise in long-run earnings capacity for males has a destabilizing effect. However, if it is combined with a female positive sur-prise, the effect is stabilizing. Commitments become more stable the older the spouses are at the start, and if young children are present.
Paper [III] studies the role of unemployment in the dissolution of relationships by applying a two-step estimation method to an extensive data set, which con-tains information about young Swedish males and females. Unemployment is recognized as endogenous in the separation decision, and the results show that the effect of unemployment on separation is biased when unemployment is as-sumed to be exogenous in the separation equation. The probability of separation is found to be increasing with male unemployment, while female unemployment decreases the probability of dissolution.

Full textFamily has known great transformations in the last decades in a large number of OECD countries. On one hand, fertility rates have decreased. On the other hand, the number of separations has increased sharply. This thesis asks whether these major changes of family structure affect child’s human capital, being a new source of inequalities. Using very large datasets and micro-econometric methods, the three chapters present original empirical evidence on whether parental separation and family size impact individual’s human capital. The first chapter studies the effect of parental separation in France on individual’s achievement, and find a negative effect of parental separation on individual’s educational attainment and social position. Using an American dataset, the second chapter asks whether this effect is driven by changes in time spent with parents, and find that 30% of the effect of parental separation on socio-emotional skills is explained by the decrease in time spent with at least one parent present. The third chapter accounts for another aspect of family structure: the number of children. Using a British dataset, we find that having a second sibling in the United Kingdom decreases the child’s socio-emotional skills, especially for girls

Full textOur research examines the power structure of the chinese family. This study not only permits us to have a global vision of the chinese organisation domestic, but also to reveal the interactions between father, mother and only child in the chinese family. In this research, we use a triadic model to treat the father-mother-child relationship in the chinese family. Previous researches were based only on dyadic model being relation parents-child or husband-wife. This paper is composed of three parts : theoretical outline, methodology of the research and the analysis and treatments of data. In the first part of this paper, we define the theoretical outline, its pertinence has been analysed by summarising the occident literature concerning the family in the research of the consumer's comportment and its adaptation in the chinese context. The second part of this paper consist of two chapters. The first chapter concern essentially the process of measure instrument's choice. In second chapter, we present the march of research : sampling procedure realisation of investigation. The part which present the data treatment is divided into three chapters. The first present the verification of scale's fidelity and validity. Then, we clarify the differents types of chinese family by the aide of typology analyse. In the second chapter, we establish the hypothes of research. The last chapter concern the results analyse of the research. The introduction and the conclusion are also presented

Bisiak, Francesco. "Structural studies of the Roundabout protein family." Thesis, Université Grenoble Alpes (ComUE), 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018GREAV006/document.
Full textNeuronal and vascular systems require a complex network to properly perform their functions. The processes involved in creating this network rely on coordinated pathways, often activated through common protein/receptor systems, which lead to cytoskeletal remodelling. In general, neuronal and vascular cells respond to extracellular stimuli in the form of soluble secreted proteins, which interact with surface receptors to mediate attraction or repulsion towards the source of the secreted proteins. This process, called guidance, is regulated by seven families of receptors and their respective ligands, which influence each other and can act on the neuronal system, the vascular system or both.Structural information about the extracellular region of many of these receptors, and how signal is relayed across the membrane, is lacking. This study is focused around the extracellular domain of two single-pass transmembrane receptors of the Roundabout and UNC5 protein families that are majorly involved in angiogenesis: Robo4 and UNC5B.Based on the findings of this study, the Robo4 and UNC5B extracellular domains are extensively glycosylated with N-linked glycans of the complex type. Site-directed mutagenesis of the predicted Robo4 glycosylation sites disrupts protein expression, indicating that they are necessary for protein stability and passage through the glycosylation pathway might be necessary for correct folding. MALS and SAXS data show that in solution the Robo4 extracellular domain is a flexible monomer with extended shape. Several Fabs binding to the extracellular domain of Robo4 were characterised, with the expectation to identify those Fabs that could inhibit the reported Robo4/UNC5B interaction for further characterisation. Complex formation was verified by SEC-MALS and SAXS, and interaction constants were determined using SPR. Crystals of some Robo4 extracellular domain/Fab complexes were produced, although the structure of the complex could not be solved at the present time.Despite a study by another group showing otherwise, pull-down, SEC-MALS and SPR experiments show that the Robo4 and UNC5B extracellular domains do not interact with each other. It is proposed that the difference may be caused by different glycosylation patterns specific to the cell lines used for each study, or by an undetected third party necessary for interaction. This, however, still requires further study. SEC-MALS analysis showed that the UNC5B extracellular domain is a monomer in solution and its crystal structure was solved at 3.4 Å resolution. Comparison to the existing structures of human UNC5A and rat UNC5D shows striking similarities and a high degree of evolutionary conservation of the Ig domains might be indication of the importance of this region, which is responsible for binding to the guidance cue Netrin. Although the Netrin binding region is known to be within the Ig domains, the precise binding site has not yet been determined, but it might be located in proximity, or within, the negatively charged surfaces present on the Ig domains which are observed in the UNC5B structure. It is hoped that the work presented here will give the basis for better biochemical and structural characterisation of these two receptors
