Adendorff, Christian Michael, and S. Radloff. "The development of a cultural family business model of good governance for Greek family businesses in South Africa." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002779.

Full text
Abstract:
Never in the history of the South African nation has the entrepreneurial spirit been more alive. Since the opening of international doors, after the 1994 elections, South Africa has experienced the explosive growth of transnational entrepreneurship. An enduring aspect of the explosion of such economic activity is the need for "good governance" and the need for governance education in South Africa and the rest of the continent has never been greater. The size of the family business component of the South Aftican economy suggests that it is the predominant way of doing business in South Africa. Of importance to this study is the estimate that approximately 95 % of all Greek businesses in South Africa can be classified as family businesses. The sustainability of Greek family businesses requires that they maintain good governance practices that are economically and environmentally acceptable to all stakeholders. It also requires that the next generation of Greek entrepreneurs balance good governance for the businesses as well as for the family. The primary objective of this study was to identify and explore the internal factors that influence and determine good governance to ensure the survival, growth and sustainability of Greek family businesses in South Africa. The secondary research objectives pertained to the underlying dimensions of good governance and required an exploration of the different governance concerns in relation to specific South African Greek behaviour and characteristics. A theoretical model of good governance factors was proposed and tested using Structural Equation Modeling. The study found that perceived good governance in a South African Greek family business context needs to be measured in terms of three factors, namely risk control, the internal regulatory environment and the protection of the stakeholders' interest. The study dealt further with the secondary sources effecting governance for South African businesses and was based on the latest report by the King Commission. An important finding is that the cross cultural aspect of family business governance must now be considered when conducting such research as more and more emphasis is placed on the good governance of all businesses.

Haydon, Clive Gordon. "The Relationship Between Identity Development and Family History Knowledge." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2010. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2549.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between identity development in late adolescent university students and family history knowledge. The relationship was examined within both the individual developmental and family systems theoretical frameworks. It was proposed that identity development involves achieving personal autonomy from the family of origin and at the same time maintaining positive relatedness to the family of origin. Identity development was examined using exploration, commitment, autonomy, and relatedness as dependent variables. It was proposed that late adolescent's personal exploration of and commitment to roles and values may be influenced by knowledge of parent and grandparent histories. It was also proposed that late adolescent's achievement of personal autonomy and positive family relatedness may be influenced by knowledge of parent and grandparent histories. The sample consisted of 239 university students. The Parental Relationship Inventory (PRI) and the Ego Identity Process Questionnaire (EIPQ) measured identity development constructs. The Do You Know? (DYK) scale measured family history knowledge. Multiple regression analyses indicated a significant positive relationship between commitment and family history knowledge and relatedness and family history knowledge, a negative relationship between autonomy and family history knowledge, and a weak correlation between exploration and family history knowledge. Findings indicate family history knowledge may influence components of identity development. This has practical implications for parents and others such as teachers, youth workers, social workers, and youth program designers whose work is directed at enhancing adolescent development.

Ward, Graham. "A training and development model for successors in a family business : case study." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/1559.

Full text
Abstract:
Family businesses constitute between forty five and ninety percent of gross domestic product world wide. Research shows that within the next five years over fifty percent of executives will retire, highlighting the significance of successful family business successions. Family businesses founded in the “baby-boom” era are of immediate concern to researchers who are working to understand the dynamics around the succession process and ultimately the criteria preventing or enhancing successful successions. The purpose of this study was to better understand the development of successors in family businesses. A detailed literature study was conducted on family businesses and in particular the factors which both positively and negatively affect family business successions. A single case study approach was used to test whether six dynamic variables applied to this case or not. Three sibling brother successors, a sibling sister and their parents were each separately interviewed and the interviews voice recorded. They were asked questions which could be later analysed and used to uphold or negate whether the six dynamic variables applicable to successful family business succession were upheld or rejected. The data was meticulously analysed and similar answers grouped together. Answers which varied from the norm were reported separately. It was found that in all six of the propositions the responses received from the case study respondents upheld the propositions. Thus, families businesses seeking succession, may well understand and take action regarding the six dynamic variables relating to successful family business successions

Three case companies were analyzed through an adapted developmental framework to illustrate the progression in corporate governance in response to changes in the ownership, investment and management dimensions over time. In this development, causal relationships between corporate governance and the three other framework dimensions were identified. It was found that the analyzed companies´ corporate governance implementation was motivated by the need to curb agency costs, whereas a cornerstone in this development was the first generational change. Only after the family businesses have reached the necessary maturity on all three dimensions, corporate governance practices were implemented. Put simply, the analyzed case companies developed formal systems as they grew more complex. This study complements the academic discussions on corporate governance in family businesses by offering Brazilian evidence on its underlying motivations and sequential implementation over time.

Full text
Abstract:
Family Matters – Essays of Families, Firms and Funding in the Philippines 1850–2014 is a study of family business groups in the Philippines. It consists of an introductory essay and four separate papers. The introductory essay frames the thesis in the vast literature on family firms and family business groups in emerging economies, discusses sources and methodology, and provides an overview of Philippine economic history to give the overarching economic context to the separate papers. The first paper deals with the role of institutions in understanding the dominance and prevalence of family business groups in the Philippines. The literature posits that weak institutions can help explain the predominance of family business groups in emerging economies. This paper takes a historical perspective to examine whether that explanation holds over time, examining the development of core property rights and core economic institutions over time and how family firms have responded. The second paper studies funding options in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and whether the rapidly growing financial system was driven from above or below. The paper examines the impact it had on the explicit goal of stimulating investment and growth in the early twentieth century and what that meant for family firms. The third paper studies capital market developments since the Asian crisis and in particular the growth of the corporate bond market in the Philippines; how this development and how it affected family business groups. The fourth paper deals with governance and management capabilities and examines professionalization of family firms over time to seek to answer the question of longevity. Management literature provides studies and models for family firms but these are fairly recent whereas the family firms that have been in business for several generations have found ways to manage for the long term. The paper analyses what three select groups have done in terms of professionalization and management.

Esquivel, Adriana. "Language Brokering a Dynamic Phenomenon: A Qualitative Study Examining the Experiences of Latina/o Language Brokers." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2012. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/52.

Full text
Abstract:
Language brokers are children of immigrants who use their skills as bilinguals to interpret or translate for their family and/or community members. Although language brokering may begin in childhood or preadolescence, language brokering may continue until adulthood. While there are a small number of studies that have touched upon change over time, this study’s primary focus is on language brokers’ experiences relating to change over time. This was accomplished through semi-structured in depth retrospective interviews among Latina/o young adults attending small liberal arts colleges. Three aspects of language brokering were examined, the practice of language brokering, feeling towards language brokering, and family dynamics. Three new aspects of language brokering emerged, brokering for parent’s business, brokering for the community, and brokering technology. Siblings played the role of the language broker at different points in time and to different extents. Parents’ English language developed, and they were able to navigate some tasks due to their language development and their experience completing typical forms. Feelings of joy and frustration, in deed, coexist. Feelings towards language brokering also changed from embarrassment and nervousness to confidence and satisfaction. The patterns and experiences found in this study highlight the complexity and dynamic nature of language brokering.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to qualitatively examine the possible formation of surrogate families within Ugandan schools to provide a context for positive development experiences, especially for orphans who lack positive development opportunities provided by parents. The sample for this study consisted of 66 Ugandan Secondary School students from eight schools in the Mukono district of Uganda. This study found a potentially widespread family formation pattern between students and their teachers/coaches. More than 75% of students self-identified their teacher and/or coach as family. The results provide insight concerning why orphans and vulnerable children are forming surrogate families with staff members at school. Teachers and coaches were able to offer the students positive developmental assets and were therefore identified as family.

Cullen, Margaret Diane Munro. "The development of an entrepreneurial management model to promote the survival and growth of family estate wine businesses in the South African wine industry." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/491.

Full text
Abstract:
The South African wine industry is polarised into the quantity-producing majority and the quality-conscious minority [Hughes, 2003]. The qualityproducing sector of the South African wine industry is dominated by family businesses. Research shows that there are approximately ninety familyowned wineries in South Africa. By international standards, South Africa is viewed as a quantity, not quality producing wine country, which will make it difficult to survive in an industry where quality is paramount for recognition. The ‘trailblazers’ of the international wine industry are family owned wineries [Robinson, 2000]. Twenty five percent of the 2003 five star South African wines were made by individuals or family wineries [Hughes, 2003], emphasising the growing importance of family wineries in the production of quality wines. It is important now, more than ever, with the industry opening up internationally, that survival of the family-owned wineries and their production of icon wines are promoted so that they can become flagship producers of the industry. The achievement of international status as a quality producing country, as well as building an industry based on the longevity of wine producing families, as well as a nation of wine lovers in South Africa should result.

Abstract:
Background: During the last decade or so the century old bespoke tailors on Savile Row have become the epitome of luxury brands as far as menswear is concerned. At the same time, the different establishments on Savile Row have started to modernise themselves through various means to better fit into today’s fast paced retail-market. Aims of the research: The purpose of this research is to discover what factors have played part in keeping the founders of Savile Row, Henry Poole & Co., modern and relevant throughout the years. Methods: This research was conducted as a qualitative single case, case study. The data was gathered through semi-structured interviews with upper management and other available published sources and then analysed with the help of former research in relevant areas. Results: It was found that the brand of Henry Poole & Co. stayed true to their origins as a bespoke tailor and that modernising is something that has not been forced upon the company and brand but should more be seen as a continuous process where each new generation bring something new to the company. The company had adapted modern ways of communication such as social media and a responsive website and also incorporated step down line extensions, where they sell ready-to-wear and made-to-measure garments in China and Japan. This is a way to develop their brand into other segments but they still kept their original brand vision intact as being a pure bespoke tailor located on Savile Row and kept their different business operations on a distance. Contributions: This thesis has opened up doors to an area that has not had much interest from the academic world. It hopefully gives way for new research ideas, but it has also highlighted management tools and best practices that has contributed to the success of a more than two century old company.

Akah, Ndang William. "The entrepreneurial orientation and performance of African immigrant-owned small businesses in the Eastern Cape." Thesis, Nelson Mandela University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/13868.

Full text
Abstract:
Given the rapid inflow of African immigrant entrepreneurs into South Africa, as well as the lack of understanding and research attention given to African immigrant entrepreneurial orientation, the failure rate of their businesses in South Africa is very high. The purpose of this study is to contribute to more effective and robust African immigrant entrepreneurship in South Africa by investigating the impact of African immigrant entrepreneurial orientation on business performance. With this purpose in mind, the primary objective of this study is to establish the level of entrepreneurial orientation of African immigrant-owned small businesses in the Eastern Cape Province, and to determine the influence of this orientation on business performance. This study sets out to pull together previous findings and theories on the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation, and business performance, to find support for the theories on the determinants of entrepreneurial orientation in the literature, and to combine these findings into a simple model. An overview of small businesses was first conducted, in which the nature of small businesses and African immigrant-owned small businesses was taken into consideration, as well as the role small businesses play within the economy and the different challenges small businesses face. The dimensions of entrepreneurial orientation were discussed. These included Innovativeness, Pro-activeness, Risk-taking, Competitive aggressiveness, and Autonomy. Business performance was discussed and was measured in terms of financial and non-financial measures. The resource based view was also discussed and human, social, and financial capitals were taken into consideration. A proposed theoretical framework was established to show the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and business performance of African immigrant-owned small businesses and this was later tested by developing a hypothesis. A structured questionnaire was developed and data was collected through these self-administered questionnaires. They were made available to the respondents by a means of the snowball technique and data was collected from 218 respondents. Each construct was defined and operationalised. This was done by using themes from previous studies, as well as self developed themes. Cronbach‟s alpha coefficients were used to confirm reliability and validity of the measuring instruments. Completed questionnaires were subject to different statistical tests. A descriptive analysis was carried out, as well as an exploratory factor analysis, multiple regression and an analysis of variance. The findings of this study showed that Innovativeness has a negative relationship to Business performance whilst Competitive aggressiveness, Proactiveness, Risk-taking, and Autonomy have a significant positive relationship to Business performance. Furthermore, the findings established that Financial capital has a significant relationship to Competitive aggressiveness, Innovativeness, and Proactiveness, whilst there is no relationship to Risk-taking and Autonomy. In addition, it was established that there is a significant relationship between Human capital and Competitive aggressiveness, Proactiveness, and Autonomy, whilst there is no relationship to Innovativeness and Risk-taking. Moreover, the study also showed that a relationship exists between some selected demographic variables of the African immigrant-owned small business and entrepreneurial orientation, as measured by Innovativeness (H1a), Pro-activeness (H1b), Risk-taking (H1c), Competitive aggressiveness (H1d) and Autonomy (H1e). An exception was the demographic variable, the Level of education, which was not found to be as stipulated in the hypothesis. In the context of this study, it was found that 62% of change in African immigrant-owned small business performance is affected by entrepreneurial orientation while other factors accounted for the remaining 38%. Management should revisit its entrepreneurial orientation capabilities and determine whether these are delivering values. This will require a review of policies and procedures in addition to benchmarking these activities to identify whether the business is committing an unwarranted and misplaced amount of resources to a given entrepreneurial orientation activity. Blind pursuit of the uniform implementation of an entrepreneurial dimension is not an effective way for African immigrant-owned small businesses to create an advantage.

Abstract:
From studies of Collins and Porras (1995) which show that visionary businesses possess a fundamental central ideology for its perpetuation, the main objective of this work was to analyze the practices of human development and communication of a visionary business, in order to identify cultural elements used to strengthen the central ideology. Thus, the following specific objectives were determined: to examine basic values responsible for the permanent character of the organization in analysis, to verify how values are institutionalized, to investigate the communication system and to analyze the practices of human development of the business. The method adopted was a case study, applied at Expresso Medianeira, a family business, in a collective transport segment, located in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul. With the employment of interviews, document analysis and non-participant observation; it was possible to evidence that the cultural elements permeate the day-to-day of the organization. The heroes, rites, rituals, ceremonies and stories are symbolic dimensions which strengthen the values declared by the business and lived by its members. These cultural elements manifest through the practices of communication and human development which are strategically utilized by Expresso Medianeira, such as events, processes of socialization, performance evaluation, and reward and penalty.

Dunn, Barbara Murray. "Emotional and developmental influences on the management of generational transitions by business-owning families." Thesis, University of Stirling, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/2271.

Abstract:
In recent years, succession has become a major theme in family business research. Much of the research effort has concentrated on the managerial dimension of succession, often subordinating the importance of other major variables such as family relationship dynamics and the form of business ownership on the succession outcome. Family enterprises are generally conceptualised as a dynamic, evolving systems in which the actions and interactions taking place amongst constituent groups determine the system's outputs. This study aimed to overcome the limitations of examining only one dimension of a system's activities by carrying out a longitudinal holistic analysis of the evolution of the family enterprise system as it went through the process of generational transition. The research for this thesis employed the multiple case study method to investigate the influence of emotional and developmental factors on the ability of business-owning families to make progress with the tasks required to complete a generational transition. Three specific issues were examined: the nature of the task environment facing the family enterprise system over the duration of the transition period; the approaches used by families to address the tasks required for them to move through the stages making up the transition process; and the extent to which emotional and developmental factors prevented or promoted progress being made with the generational transition. The results reveal that families face the same sequence of stages in the generational transition process. However, they differ in their ability to move through these stages, towards closure of the transition period and the achievement of a succession outcome, Importantly, the degree to which individuals and families are able to make progress is related to their ability to manage the anxiety generated during the transition process. Anxiety is created when the structures or network of interrelationships that hold their family enterprise system intact are evaluated and may be dismantled and reconstructed differently for the next stage in the system's development. The study supports the view that anxiety is generated during transition times when developmental pressures for change build up from changes taking place in the life-cycles underway within the family enterprise system. It also supports the view that developmental pressure (such as a crisis) from the business subsystem alone does not lead to transition task activity and progress. Progress in response to business sub-system pressure comes about when the opportunity exists to solve an ongoing adult development problem by implementing a solution to a transition task problem. The ability to manage anxiety was found to be related to both the quality of emotional functioning in the family and the extent to which the adult development agendas of both generations are in alignment. Favourable alignment brought a developmental opportunity for the individuals concerned. It allowed them to do the exploratory work required in order to assess the extent to which the family business could provide part of their life structure for the next phase of their development. However, in addition to adult development generational alignment, the study confirmed that the quality of emotional functioning in the family (their ability to overcome multigenerational patterns of functioning and behaviour) influenced the family's ability to make progress with ownership transfer and other tasks. The study concludes that emotional and developmental influences are mediating factors between the forces for change originating in the family enterprise system and its environment and the ability of those in the system to respond to the need for change and manage the transition process. It also found that families significantly underestimate the nature and complexity of the work involved in the transition process, as well as the timescale and emotional commitment required to complete the transition.

Abstract:
The aim of this work, which recognizes the importance of family-owned firms in the international environment – focusing in particular on the Italian context – is to analyze their propensity to implement the acquisition strategy. The study, composed of three interrelated papers, is intended to “take a picture” of the Italian entrepreneurial fabric, by detecting the features of family firms and the type of growth operations through acquisitions. Furthermore, this research outlines comparisons with the operations led by non family firms, in order to understand similarities and differences by highlighting how the role of family owner, both in terms of property and management, influences the propensity to acquire. The first paper examines the propensity of family and non family firms to acquire, showing the types and features of the growth operations through acquisitions in the timeframe 2000 - 2014. The second paper, after studying in depth the role of the cultural and economic distance between the acquirer and target, checks whether family firms benefitted from the implementation of acquisition. The third paper analyses the influence of the several implementation procedures and the level of direct involvement of the family in the life of the firms on the propensity to acquire.

Abstract:
Succession of the family business is an issue that continues to be of great interest to researchers and practitioners because of its perilous nature. Although some studies have considered the succession in family businesses from a knowledge based approach, the existing theoretical deficiencies needs further studies. This research aims to formulate a better understanding of the process of knowledge transfer that takes place within the succession process of family businesses. A better description of this process and its features in time provides family and professional actors involved in the training of successors useful knowledge. Futhermore, the formalization of the steps are likely to guide the action of family businesses that prepare succession. To this end, an empirical investigation of family business successors was undertaken using narrative method. The qualitative data analysis was carried out by complementary techniques : diachronic, thematic and comparative analysis. As a results an integrated process of successor’s development in family businesses, which is carried out in three stages, marked out by influencing factors, transfer methods, actants, critical events and disruptive elements. This dynamic process brings out temporalities and describes, through the use of the theatrical metaphor, a rise in the stage of the successor in order to obtain the role of leader

Abstract:
This dissertation examines leadership and leadership development issues in family businesses. The data was collected during late 2003 through qualitative surveys and interviews with family businesses in South Africa. Research findings indicate family business leaders place high importance on selection and development of the next generation leader. The ability and desire ofthe next generation to lead the business is of concern to family business leaders as is the senior generation's ability to let go during transition. Non-family employees are valued as contributors to business success. Gaining the respect of employees is valued as an important aspect of next generation leadership development. Leadership development across generations in family businesses also occurs by the example and values of previous generations. Leadership development involves entering the business at a young age, learning to work hard, acquiring formal education, gaining independent work experience, and engaging in continuing education. Family business leadership needs for education and research include working with family and business dynamics, education in functional business areas, models for effective leadership transitions, forums for peer interaction, and tools for dealing with ownership and estate transitions. Stories told and retold in family businesses reflect sacrifice, fmancial and legal crisis, and disasters. The leadership lessons of theses stories center on hard work, persistence, vision and values, and recognition that the family business is about more than money. Conclusions include that leadership development in family businesses occurs through a synthesis of example from previous generation(s), work experience, and the process of earning employee respect. Recommendations are made for future research on (a) the role of example in family business leadership development, and (b) how stories play a role in passing on values to succeeding generations in family business.
Thesis (MBA)-University of Natal, Durban, 2003.

Abstract:
105
Family firms, the most common form of corporate organization in the West, have played an important role globally. The main goal of corporate governance for family firms is continual sustainability and business development. If corporate entities can strengthen the transparency and openness of their corporate governance, and focus on corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainable business objectives, besides government supervision, it could positively affect society as a whole and enhance public recognition of business. Determining how we can improve CSR and sustainability management besides the simple pursuit of economic progress in enterprises is an extremely important goal. Social Emotional Wealth (SEW) is the theoretical basis which suggests that family firms have a high aspiration to look for methods that could be used to continue the family emotional attachments and values. While a large body of literature has explored CSR and family firms, few studies have examined the sustainability and SEW, and the development of sustainability also needs to be promoted. Differing significantly from prior research on CSR, this research is based on assumptions that family firms have strong motivations linked to heritage and accumulate SEW in the pursuit of close social relations, and not entirely in the pursuit of economic interests, thus the focus is on the exploration of the development of sustainability and business performance. We use family firms as the sample study since they occupy a high proportion in the economic market, and inferred that family firms will strongly pursue sustainable operation and social recognition, to further explore how the business performance of family firms is affected according to several characteristics of family firms in the case of sustainable development. In this study, we regard the Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Awards (TCSA) as the objective measurement indicator of the development of sustainability; it is based on SEW pursuit of close social relations, and we use return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE) and Market Value to Book Value (MTB) measurement indicators as the variables for business performance. Then, we could examine the relations between them. After controlling for firm characteristics and control variables, we detected several characteristics of family firms, i.e. ownership control, deviance of control and distribution, and single family directors board, and how they are related to business performance when firms received TCSA. The empirical results show that sustainability and business performance have a significant positive correlation; it would increase the incentive for other enterprises to pursue sustainable development. Consequently, it benefits society and the environment. With this study, we also suggest that in the case of developing sustainability, factors such as ownership control, seats control and direction by a single family are negatively correlated with the business performance in family firms according to the theoretical foundation of preferring SEW accumulation rather than profits. The contribution of this study not only lies in increasing the empirical research on family firms and sustainability, but also in providing a reference for future research on sustainability issues and SEW. The contribution to management practices is that the results can reveal some perception about continuity operations of enterprises, and the prediction of business performance of enterprises induced by sustainable development as well as different characteristics of family firms for the public or stakeholders. We wish this study could make several contributions to the literature and the practice of management.

104
The economic importance of family businesses and their innovation patterns have become a topic of increasing interest in recent decades. Among all the key factors contributing to innovation, firm interconnectedness and knowledge search are particularly significant to new product development (NPD). Although the literature on the innovative behavior of family firms continues to accumulate, the causes of firm innovativeness remain inconclusive. To heed the recent calls for more inquiries into the innovation of micro and small sized family businesses, this thesis, drawing on relational and stewardship perspectives, aims to examine how family social capital shapes firm innovativeness through the company-wide explorative orientation. Using Heckman’s two-stage Model on a sample of 186 Taiwanese micro & small sized family firms, this study shows primarily that the outcome of NPD is explainable by something beyond the companywide search orientation per se; that is, family social capital drives explorative activities which, in turn, enhance the NPD. This study further attests that the effect of explorative orientation on NPD is strengthened in conjunction with managerial stewardship.

In addition, this study investigates whether the founder serving as the chairman and the succession affect the magnitude of R&D investment. The sample firms are Chinese listed firms from 2010 to 2015. The empirical results show that compared with the family firms, non-family firms have more R&D investment. Compared to family firms whose founders serve as the chairman, family firms whose do not serve as the chairman have more R&D investment. According to the annual results, the succession of second generation has no significant impact on family firms’ R&D investment. Whether in a manorial economy, farming society or a modern market economy, it always has a very strong vitality, evolves with the developing economy and society, and plays an important role in the economic development of a country or region. With the further expansion of economic globalization, Chinese family business will face a more intense competitive market environment with increasing uncertainty. In order to survive and develop, they must continue to carry out activities with independent innovation and entrepreneurship. Therefore, a basic and important problem is how can the Chinese family business keep its competitive advantage, and achieve sustainable development? Based on that, this study examines how social capital and dynamic capability affect the sustainable development of a family business, and how the core family transfer the social capital, and dynamic capability to the next generation. In this study, we have adopted the qualitative research approach. Overall, 17 cases were selected, covering 8 provinces of China. Using a qualitative case study approach consisting of in-depth, semi-structured interviews and analyzing the data with content analysis methodology, we conducted research that is designed to add to the existing theory on family firms' succession. Based on the social capital theory, this research constructs a development model from the dynamic capability perspective to help Chinese family business keep the competitive advantage, achieve a successful succession and achieve sustainable development. This thesis makes several substantive theoretical contributions to current Chinese family business studies, and has practical implications for business executives.
Family owned businesses strive to not only be successful as measured by profit, market position, and other determinants used to gauge businesses success, but they also strive in the continuity of transitioning management and ownership from one generation to the next. This study explores the experiences of second generation successors with the succession process and how those experiences may influence their approach to planning the next generation succession. A qualitative case study approach was followed, using data collected from twelve second generation family business owners. This research examined the succession experiences of these owners in the areas of succession planning, successor development, individual learning, and the culture of stewardship. A contribution to the body of knowledge is made by developing these areas. This research addresses a gap in the literature where no research existed which specifically focused on second generation experiences. A contribution to practice is made by outlining how these areas influenced second generation family business owners as they contemplate approaches to future succession.
98
Abstract The utmost goal for most of the enterprises is sustainable development. The problems which occur in enterprises are quite different, but there are still some similar ones, such as, the shortage of good employees, management issues, and succession problems, etc. It is estimated that 97% companies in Taiwan are small-and-medium-sized enterprises (SME), and among them, 80% are family owned.
