Everything we do from the time we begin our working careers to the time we end our working careers revolves around our family, both nuclear and extended; our growth as individuals, learning and retaining more skills and information as we age; and for some, our business. Abstract:
This report explores the dynamics of community philanthropy and family philanthropy in Mexico in order to inform efforts to strengthen the connection between the two. In terms of community philanthropy, our primary focus is upon Mexico’s community foundation model, which is the most institutionalized form of community philanthropy and a uniquely important actor in the philanthropic ecosystem. What makes for effective cooperation between government and business in industrial policy? Core research questions on the institutional design of arrangements for business-government interactions focus on three main functions: i) maximizing the benefits of dialogue and information exchange; ii) motivating participation through authoritative allocation; and iii) minimizing unproductive rent seeking. Countries with more experiences of public-private collaboration (PPC) tend to have more pragmatic governments and better organized and informally networked private sectors. Effective cooperation als

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic restrictions have transformed family life in Canada. With the closure of schools, daycares, restaurants and many businesses, as well as major job losses and new work-from-home measures, many parents and children are spending a lot more time together. So how do families feel about life after the pandemic? Six weeks of data from the Vanier Institute of the Family, the Association for Canadian Studies and Leger show that families with children are not ready to send them back to school this year, but parents are ready to go back to their workplaces after the pandemic, among o

Improving public transport infrastructure changes local market conditions. In this paper, I examine the impact of the construction and operation of "Metrobus", Mexico City's Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system on consumer prices in chain stores, street vendors, and small family-owned (mom and pop) stores. I do so through a panel event study design. I consider the construction and operation of BRT as two different phenomena; while the former is associated to street closures, the latter reduces transportation costs. I show that only prices in mom and pop stores respond to changes in local market cond

Abstract:
The creation of non-contributory pension schemes is becoming increasingly common as countries struggle to reduce poverty. Drawing on data from Mexico's Adultos Mayores Program (Older Adults Program) --a cash transfer scheme aimed at rural adults over 70 years of age-- we evaluate the effects of this program on the well-being of the beneficiary population. Exploiting a quasi-experimental design whereby the program relies on exogenous geographical and age cutoffs to identify its target group, we find that the mental health of elderly adults in the program is significantly improved, as their scor
