Abstract:
In the last two decades, gay and lesbian parenting has emerged as a highly contentious subject in France. The creation of the Pacte Civil de Solidarité in 1999 and the legalization of same-sex marriage and adoption in 2013 testify to the evolution of gay and lesbian parenting from a hidden practice into a public matter. The growing visibility of gay and lesbian parenting has coincided with the emergence of lesbian mothering as a literary theme. While texts portraying lesbian mothers remain small in number, the fact that most were published after 2000 suggests their being on the rise. This thes

It focuses on selected fictional and non-fictional texts of the 1980s and 1990s and examines the ways in which they engage with feminist concerns. Until now, post-feminism has not been studied through its articulations in popular literature. This thesis is a study of the family saga in British women’s writing and explores how women writers between the two World Wars and within the context of modernity appropriated the genre. At the turn of the twentieth century social changes in British society led people to a reconsideration of what family and modernity meant. The re-imagining of family experience thus caused a flourishing of family sagas, particularly among women writers, and these sagas enjoyed a widespread readership and sales. <p> This dissertation examines representations of the family in art and literature of the Spanish court during Philip IV's reign. I contend that depictions of royal and noble families in court settings&mdash;and by artists who resided at court&mdash;spoke to the monarchy's social and political concerns at a time of imperial crisis. Family is understood here not as a fixed entity, but as a mobile cultural construct that bent, in Golden Age Spain, to address a variety of needs. Her ghosts signal forgotten aspects of American history and provide access to another storyline--one that lies in the shadows of the novel's principal narrative. This chapter

Though there are a number of contributing socio-economic factors, it argues that there is an inherent ambivalence in many texts written by white South African authors. The ambivalence of these texts is exposed by my analysis of two prominent South African novels, Marlene Van Niekerk's Triomf and Shaun Johnson's The Native Commissioner.
