Abstract:
Although the primary aim of management in chronic kidney disease (CKD) is to prevent progression to stage 5 CKD, for many patients renal replacement therapy (RRT) is inevitable. Planning for the initiation of dialysis is aimed at ensuring that it takes place in a supported environment in which adverse events will be minimized, that the modality chosen is appropriate for the individual circumstances, and the patient has full knowledge of what RRT entails. Beginning dialysis inevitably involves medical, psychological, family, and social issues, and preparation for RRT is optimally managed by a team with appropriate expertise in these areas. Multidisciplinary education programmes that inform patients and their families about their disease and the treatment options are likely to result in patients starting dialysis in a planned and elective manner.

Abstract:
For emerging adults, embarking on a career is both exciting and daunting—social changes and globalization have yielded increasing opportunities together with increasing challenges. Planning and flexibility are essential for success. In this chapter, the authors examine how these changes have impacted educational and work transitions, beginning with a broad snapshot of workforce participation, followed by a discussion of globalization effects and labor market shifts. Relational and family influences are seen to be influential in the context of work and career decisions. They identify several issues of particular significance to emerging adults, such as rapid societal change, cultural influences, work expectations, and increasing demands for knowledge and skills. New pathways to work are described, along with the transitions experienced among special populations such as the economically disadvantaged, immigrants, and international students. Current research illuminates these opportunities and challenges and emphasizes the need for culturally appropriate and meaningful transition supports.

Turner, Jane. Working as a multidisciplinary team. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198736134.003.0033.

Abstract:
Multidisciplinary care is established as the optimal model of clinical treatment of patients with cancer. As cancer treatment becomes increasingly complex, it is obvious that no one individual can maintain knowledge and skills across all domains of care. This means that a collaborative approach is required to ensure that expertise is available to assist in decision-making and planning of treatment, which is evidence-based and focused on the needs of the individual patient, taking into account their social and family context. This chapter describes the benefits of treatment by a multidisciplinary team including a description of the characteristics of well-functioning teams. Information is provided about adverse impacts on patient outcomes if there is poor communication within the multidisciplinary team. Evidence about strategies to improve communication within the multidisciplinary team is presented, supported by practical exercises to apply learning into the clinical setting.

Abstract:
This chapter argues that the book fills a knowledge gap by conducting a systematic analysis of how the global gag rule affects women’s reproductive health across developing regions. The book extends the focus of the two previous econometric studies of the global gag rule’s impact in sub-Saharan Africa to include three additional developing regions: Latin America and the Caribbean, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and South and Southeast Asia. This statistical analysis is grounded in a conceptual framework that models the complex factors that influence women’s decision-making about fertility. The chapter also describes the book’s multimethod approach to examining restrictions on women’s reproductive health through historical analysis, case studies, and analysis of aggregate data. The evolution of family-planning programs, the links between contraceptive access and fertility rates, the relationship between restrictive abortion laws and abortion rates, and the likelihood of other adverse effects are also introduced.

Abstract:
In Making Sexual Stewards, Jade S. Sasser explores how a small network of international development actors, including private donors, NGO program managers, scientists, and youth advocates is bringing population back to the center of public environmental debate. With an increasing focus on climate change coming to dominate news media and international development circles, population advocates have harnessed an opportunity to reframe population growth as an urgent source of climate crisis, and a unique opportunity to support women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) via funding international family planning policy. Making Sexual Stewards follows the network through a diverse range of sites—from Silicon Valley foundation headquarters to youth advocacy trainings, the halls of Congress and an international climate change conference—to investigate how the new population advocacy is constructed and circulated, while drawing on longstanding development narratives linking population growth to environmental scarcity and geopolitical instability. Sasser argues that this advocacy revolves around framing the sexual steward: a neoliberal development subject sitting at the nexus of discourses linking scientific knowledge production, creative donor advocacy, and youthful advocacy focused on global social justice.

Mancini, Alexandra, and Paula Abramson. Communication and psychosocial issues within neonatal palliative care. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198806677.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter introduces the fast-developing specialty of neonatal palliative care within the wider context of palliative care. It sets the scene for understanding the intricacies and challenges faced by families and health-care professionals alike. Good quality palliative care requires the health-care professional to not only possess specialist knowledge and skills, but enhanced attitudes and behaviours focussing on advanced and effective communication skills. The interdisciplinary team must collaborate effectively and work in partnership with the parents whilst considering the whole family’s needs when planning care for the infant. In the United Kingdom (UK), over 90,000 infants are admitted to specialist neonatal intensive care units every year as a result of being born prematurely, born with congenital conditions, or following a significant insult at the time of delivery.

Adam, Sheila, Sue Osborne, and John Welch, eds. Critical Care Nursing. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199696260.001.0001.

Abstract:
This textbook encompasses the knowledge, skills, and expertise needed to deliver excellent nursing care to critically ill patients. Emphasis is placed on a holistic and compassionate approach towards humanizing the impact of the environment, organ support, and monitoring, as well as critical illness itself. Chapters cover the general aspects of critical care such as the critical care environment or critical care continuum and specific organ systems and diseases. The structure of the systems chapters reminds the reader of the underlying anatomy and physiology as well as highlighting areas of particular relevance to critical care. The focus on priorities for management builds on the ABCDE assessment and offers insight into key interventions in urgent situations as well as outlining evidence-based practice. The book is ideal for those new to the critical care environment, but will also act as a reminder for more experienced nurses when faced with a new situation or when teaching/mentoring students. The patient and their family remain the centre of all This new edition brings the definitions, pathophysiology, and management of fast-changing and challenging areas such as ARDS, sepsis and multiple organ dysfunction, resuscitation, and acute kidney injury up to date as well as including any evidence-based changes associated with nursing practice in critical care. A new chapter covers major incident planning and management and the role of critical care in pandemic situations.
