Abstract. The dynamic systems approach provides a general framework for studying processes. Properties of that approach are applied to the issue of family assessment. The description covers methods of assessment of short-term processes (e.g., dyadic interaction) and long-term processes (e.g., changes in interaction patterns over years). Special attention is given to the meaning of fluctuation and its relation to transitions and changes of the family system's properties. Two examples of assessment methods and procedures are discussed. One concerns the use of state space representations, the oth

We propose an ecological systems approach to family narratives that describes three dynamically interacting systems of family narratives: shared family narratives, communicative family narratives, and family history. We review developmental research on family storytelling within each of these levels and describe how they interact to create individual narrative identity, focusing on adolescence.

Abstract:
Mental health counselors are becoming more aware of sibling abuse in all of its forms. The literature addressing the nature of sibling abuse is increasing; however, there is little written about methods of treatment. Family systems theory as a framework for understanding the common family dynamics observed in families where there is sibling abuse is discussed. Lastly this paper presents a case example using family systems theory as a framework for conceptualizing and developing treatment.

An open-systems approach serves as the conceptual foundation of the model. The distinctive features of the proposed model are the multiple levels of analysis and the dynamics and interdependencies among the subsystems, allowing the integration of mainstream theories. Abstract:
Following the death of a family member, the mourners' experiences of grief are inevitably influenced by and, in turn, influence the experiences of their relatives. Therapy should apply a model which takes this interactive process into account. A systems approach can fulfil this requirement in certain cases. Three case histories are provided to illustrate the potential effectiveness of a systems-oriented intervention. The questions still remain as to when the model is optimally applied, and whether it has a role in preventive psychiatry.
