This study focuses on the development and effect of familial and gender ideologies on the masculine identities of thirty marginal male youth aged thirteen to seventeen years, all of whom were gang members or belonged to violent male peer groups. Qualitative, indepth interviews uncovered protest and negative masculine identities. Their abusive behavior, directed at girlfriends, gays, and racial minorities, is suggested to be a response to blocked access to traditional institutional benefits of patriarchy. Domestic violence is recognised as a pervasive problem in South Africa. This study focused on the narratives of four abused women and attempted to establish the significance of sheltering in their lives. A qualitative research design was used based on semi-structured interviews, which were analysed thematically. The findings supported past research, indicating that although the women's experiences were diverse they contained many features similar to those reported in previous studies. Each of the four women was not a passive victim, having taken the decision to leave an abusive and violent rel

The current article expands on previously published works by examining respondents’ perceptions of what role alcohol and other drug use plays in causing substance use-related domestic violence. Three different perceptions emerged from the data and are presented here. First, drugs and alcohol use was perceived to be causally related to the domestic violence our respondents endured. Second, our respondents believed substance abuse resulted from the violence—it was used as a cop

Abstract:
This chapter analyses experiences of violence among queer immigrants in Norway. The aim of the chapter is to explore the various experiences of violence, and how vulnerability to violence is related to the wider patterns of discrimination and juridical, economic and social marginalisation. Based on an inductive analysis of interviews with 41 lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex people with immigrant backgrounds, we have identified four key themes: 1) Sexual abuse, 2) violence in relation to coming out as queer, 3) exposure to violence within Norwegian institutions dealing with immigration and integration, and 4) racism and violence. The experiences of violence that the participants talk about include violence from family members, acquaintances, strangers and representatives of public institutions. In order to understand queer immigrants’ experiences of violence, it is necessary to focus on the interconnectedness of various forms of violence that take place in different arenas and in different relationships. Moreover, violence needs to be understood in connection to discrimination and marginalisation based on the status as immigrant and queer.

Abstract:
The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, (PWDVA) is a special civil law aimed at effective protection of the rights of women guaranteed under the Constitution who are victims of violence of any kind occurring within the family. 26 October 2016 marked the tenth anniversary of the enforcement of the PWDVA. The chapter examines the trajectory of legal developments that culminated in the enactment of the PWDVA as well as the gaps in the legal regime that the enactment of this law sought to overcome. Tracing the history of the women’s rights movement and its engagement with equality and violence against women, the author details the sustained campaign, spanning nearly a decade, by the Indian women’s movement, the drafting of the PWDVA by Lawyers Collective in consultation with the women’s movement and the challenges in its enactment.

Abstract:
Interfaith romance or marriage, abducted women, and religious conversion are key sites of violence between Muslims and Christians in Egypt stemming from the privatization of religion and family in Egypt under modern secular governance. Even though religion-based family law is often regarded as a continuation from the premodern past, it is in fact, a modern invention that belongs to a radically distinct political order-one that has little in common with the premodern arrangement from which it supposedly emanated. A global genealogy of modern family law shows how its designation exacerbated premodern hierarchies and gender inequalities. The conjoining of religion, sexuality and family in the private sphere-in Egypt or in the United States-tied up their regulative fates in such a way that struggles over religion often unfold over the terrain of gender and sexuality. Whereas this entwinement is apparent in a variety of global struggles (over gay marriage, abortion, contraception, and HIV/AIDS, for example), in Egypt it is instantiated in the institution of religion-based family law.

Abstract:
Millions of people across Turkey protested police violence, state totalitarianism, urban gentrification, and a host of other concerns during the Gezi Park protests in late May 2013. The protests merged with Gay Pride Istanbul and fundamentally changed queer and trans peoples’ relationships with the Turkish public. This chapter establishes “the queer common” as the sexualized lines of flight which destabilise the normal ways queers are governed – a concept for understanding queer resistance against the state. The chapter argues that the state and other institutions manipulate the public to assert one acceptable model of heteronormative belonging. This assemblage (which brings together the police, the family, Sunni Islam, media and other institutions) naturalises Turkish citizenship. The chapter draws on interviews with queer activists to explore queer resistance at Gezi, challenges to ‘normalised’ Turkish identity, and the renegotiation of the state’s production of violence against queer and trans people.

Abstract:
This chapter investigates why so many erotic scenes involving sex between men in contemporary Spanish cinema are often interrupted. While these interruptions are perhaps to be expected in erotic – as opposed to pornographic – films, the frequency and sometimes violence with which they occur is intriguing and troubling. The chapter identifies different strategies of interruption that go from the classic ellipsis with fades to black to literal concealment achieved with distance, poor lighting or visual obstructions such as doors, window blinds or props. In some other cases, other characters enter the scene. These include family members (often female – wives, girlfriends, mothers) but also (often male) strangers that halt the sex act quite suddenly and aggressively mid-way. Importantly, these violent interruptions prevent the kinds of pleasurable identification that are often encouraged in heterosexual erotic scenes, even when the sex act is left to the spectators’ imagination. The study revisits some classic and well-known films by directors including Pedro Almodóvar, Cesc Gay, Eloy de la Iglesia or Gerardo Vera, as well as more recent and lesser-known work including Juanma Carrillo’s short film Fuckbuddies (2011). The analysis of the final case study, Almodóvar’s Los amantes pasajeros/I’m so Excited (2013), suggests that the erotic content of films can sometimes be hidden (and found) in surprisingly conspicuous places.
