Abstract:
The goal of the research was to determine whether artworks said to be created by famous artists were appreciated more than the same artworks attributed to nonfamous artists. Analysis indicated that the works attributed to famous artists were more appreciated than the identical works attributed to nonfamous artists: The works were liked more and judged more interesting and beautiful (all p values < .001). Participants ( N = 309), all art nonexperts, also were willing to pay more to see the works if described as created by famous artists ( p < .001); importantly, however, no differences were found in ratings of the works’ comprehensibility. This pattern of results suggests that judgmental variations were attributable to participants’ peripheral processing of factors not intrinsic to the work itself. Dual process models of attitudes, popular in social psychology, were invoked to provide a framework for understanding the findings.

Abstract:

Homes of writers and artists that have been converted into museums are powerful frameworks for a wide range of both individual and group learning experiences. The museums have a unique ability to engage the learners on a deeper level by piquing their curiosity, and also by encouraging participative creative activities. The foundation is that of experiential learning, with an emphasis on authentic and content-based learning. Each visit to an artist’s home museum is a springboard for more universal learning experiences, particularly if the learner follows up and builds on memories of the visit, or to the museum’s website. Meta-cognitive development of analytical skills and creative techniques can enrich the learner, particularly when accompanied by both individual and collaborative online activities. Each artist or writer’s home provides a unique experience, which provides an opportunity for the museum’s educational and creative staff to be very creative. The homes in this article include those of Pablo Neruda, Alexander Pushkin, Ilya Repin, Carson McCullers, Isak Dinesen, and Juan José Arreola.

Abstract:
There are few studies in which the focus is on cognitive determinants of artwork bidding. Using a micro approach, we explored factors that may influence bidders' offering from a psychological perspective. The 157 participants rated 25 paintings on the price they were willing to offer for works by famous Chinese artists executed in the traditional Chinese style and variants of the same works by a modern Chinese artist working in adaptations of the style of famous Western artists. Results showed that for both the Chinese and Western-style paintings in 3 price anchoring and 3 price nonanchoring conditions, 3 factors affected the bidding for the artworks: positive attraction, artistic quality, and cognitive stimulation. Of these factors positive attraction and artistic quality were the primary influences. In each condition, positive attraction was always the positive predictor of the bidders' offering, emphasizing the importance of the artwork's aesthetic value. In contrast, artistic quality deterred participants from bidding. In addition, whether or not there was a reference-point price made a difference in the traditional Chinese group of artworks. Bidders wished to offer a higher price only if the price had been high for the previous example of this artist's work that had sold.

Abstract:
Western cultures' conceptions about creativity emphasize originality and final products; Eastern cultures, skill and process. Does this cultural difference impact how creativity unfolds over the lifespan? To examine this, we investigated Japanese “ukiyo-e” printmaking (c. 1670–1865). Almost 2,000 illustrations of datable prints by 44 artists were found in 36 art books. Career landmarks (earliest, most frequent, and latest illustrated print) and eminence ratings were estimated for each artist. Results are largely consistent with prior research on Western samples: artists' career peaks vary greatly, averaging around age 40, and the most prolific artists usually (but not always) created the most popular prints. However, ukiyo-e artists show a more positive relation between career peak and eminence than Western artists, peak slightly later than their French (but not American) counterparts, and older artists created the most famous prints, compared to the West. Trans-historically, early-peaking ukiyo-e artists are concentrated between 1780 and 1800.

Abstract:
98
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the value of consumer’s acceptance and buying intention in fashion design and art collaboration and evaluate the efficiency of collaborative brand projects. And this thesis will be laid on constructing the correlative model combining the collaboration with brand and artist via the brand alliance model. Through questionnaires, this study investigates numbers of customers as the sampling-based objects, adopts brand alliances model, uses LISREL as an analytical tool. The induced conclusions are as follows: 1. Prior to the cooperation between brand and artist, the brand’s image and artist image is the primary factor to the success of the consumer’s acceptance. 2. When a brand intends to launch such artistic collaborations, the selection of art style should be treated as an important issue. The higher product fit level, the more probability that consumer accept the collaborative product. 3. After conducting the alliance, whether the brand equity and artist equity will improve or not will be mainly depend on the images before the alliances and the consumers’ attitudes toward both.

Lamensdorf, Jennie Kathlene. "The making of famous and glamorous artists : the role of FILE megazine in the work of General Idea." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/ETD-UT-2011-12-4713.

Full text
Abstract:
From 1972 until 1989, the artist trio General Idea produced FILE Megazine. The first eight issues of FILE, published from 1972 – 1975, are the focus of this thesis. They stand apart from the later issues because their covers hijacked the look and iconic logo of Life magazine. The red rectangle with white block letters attracted the attention of Time Inc. and resulted in a lawsuit. Rather than fight the corporate giant, General Idea changed their logo after the autumn 1975 issue. FILE, like many artists’ magazines, is typically discussed in idealistic language that privileges the subversive or democratic intentions of the publication while neglecting its significance as a device for the promotion of community and collaboration. I argue that General Idea envisioned FILE as a utopian project intended to produce the world they sought to live in. Authors frequently employ FILE as a tool to discuss General Idea’s work, focusing on it as a mirror or archive of a larger project and emphasizing FILE’s humorous, bawdy, and irreverent aspects. In this thesis, I situate FILE in terms of its historical, art historical, and theoretical frameworks. I pay particular attention to General Idea’s early involvement in the mail art network, FILE’s relationship to 1960s and 1970s artists’ magazines and magazine art, the contemporaneous social and political climate in Canada, and General Idea’s investigation and employment of theoretical frameworks culled from Marshall McLuhan’s text The Medium is the Message and Roland Barthes’ book Mythologies.
text

Full text
Abstract:
102
Danshui’s Guanyin Mountain (淡水觀音山) was renowned for its natural beauty and considered one of the “Eight Views” (八景) as early as in Qing dynasty. During the Japanese occupation, Guanyin Mountain and Danshui Harbour together made up the area known as “Danshui”, and were referred to as “Taiwan’s New Eight Views” (臺灣新八景). Images of Guanyin Mountain often appeared in photographs, postcards and paintings of the Japanese colonial period. Even after WWII, Guanyin Mountain continued to attract artistic attention, as many artists developed variations on the theme, using it to explore different artistic problems and to practice modern painting techniques. This thesis investigates Guanyin Mountain as the subject of landscape paintings and explores its visual development from before to after WWII. It covers the evolution of Guanyin Mountain as a subject, with a focus on well known Taiwanese artists during the Japanese colonisation, as well as post-war works from the Chi-Yuan Painting Society This paper consists of three parts. In the first, it investigates the visual concepts and constructions found in images of the Guanyin Mountain, looking back at the significance of its inclusion in the “Eight Views”, from the Qing dynasty through to the Japanese occupation. Chapter two and three, on the other hand, each examines three painters and their respective perceptions of the mountain. More specifically, chapter two looks at three artists of the colonial period—Liao Jichun (廖繼春, 1902-1976), Guo Bochuan (郭柏川, 1901-1974) and Chen Huikun (陳慧坤, 1907-2011); while chapter three discusses three painters from the post-war Chi-Yuan Painting Society—Chen Dewang (陳德旺, 1910-1984), Liao Dezheng (廖德政, 1920- ) and Jin Runzuo (金潤作, 1922-1983). Both groups shared similar educational and artistic backgrounds, and produced an abundance of images of the Guanyin Mountain. This thesis compares the two and their works, how they expressed their perceptions of the landscape and what artistic problems they were trying to tackle, thereby unpicking the developments in the motif, observing how the artistic viewpoint changed from one era to the other, and identifying the role of Guanyin Mountain in Taiwanese art history.

Abstract:
98
As mobile communication becomes more and more widespread, the increasing use of mobile communication systems has stimulated the interest in the muti-frequency design of monopole antennas for application in different mobile communication systems. A famous LV-shape printed monopole antenna with muti-broadband operations is proposed. The proposed antenna is fed by a coplanar waveguide (CPW) with LV-shape radiation element which refers to the popular Louis Vuitton (LV) logo. For increase the antenna bandwidth and multi-band characteristics, we proposed an L-shape structure which extends from the ground to combine the LV-shape radiation element. The measured dual-broadband frequencies are at 0.8 GHz-0.98 GHz, 1.65 GHz - 2.53 GHz and 5.05 GHz - 7 GHz with sufficient bandwidths to meet the system requirements of GSM900 (0.8 GHz - 0.96 GHz), GSM1800/2100 (1.71 GHz - 2.17 GHz), 3G (1.92 - 2.17 GHz), Bluetooth (2.4 - 2.484 GHz) and WLAN (2.4 GHz/ 5.2 GHz/ 5.8 GHz). The proposed antenna is designed on FR4, the simulated and measured result shows the good agreement.

Abstract:
Visualizations of the body of the famous Javanese Prince Diponegoro appears in various media, ranging across sketches, paintings, sculptures, banknotes and coins, shadow puppets, stamps, theatrical performances and electronic devices. All these visualizations mostly follow previous visualizations influenced by artist imaginations. This research seeks to present Prince Diponegoro in three-dimensional animated visualization using a motion capture technique. To complete this, the project draws from authentic manuscript research from the autobiography of Babad Diponegoro. Further, the project employs intertextuality as a method with which to interpolate the data, and hence to obtain a satisfactory overall visualization. The physical features, gestures and paralinguistic elements contained in the verbal text of Babad Diponegoro have been employed using motion capture data based on events written in the Babad Diponegoro. Many existing representations of the prince exist. However, this study attempts to rethink these existing visualizations, so as to produce a much more accurate, if not completely new, icon, thus differing to existing representations.

Abstract:
The aim of this survey was to find the best way for the extraction of essential oils from the Acacia dealbata Link. floral raw materials, as well as discover samples of elite perfumery products of various brands that use this aroma in perfumery compositions. Two methods of extraction with a volatile hydrocarbon solvent were used, namely, 1) Soxhlet extraction; 2) extraction of raw materials by the method of triple infusion in a solvent at a low positive temperature (+ 3 °C). To obtain absolute, concrete was extracted in a classical manner. In the first variant, the yield of concrete was 1.46 % of the weight of raw materials; in the second – 1.18 % but its aroma was more delicate. The content of absolute in the samples was 28.4 % and 24.6 % of the concrete mass, respectively. Famous brands using mimosa fragrance are L`Artisan Parfumeur (Mimosa Pour Moi), Jo Malone (Mimosa & Cardamom), Dolce & Gabbana (Velvet Mimosa Bloom), Calvin Klein (Eternity Summer), Kenzo (Summer by Kenzo), etc.

Abstract:
The term tensegrity was first coined by Buckminster Fuller to describe a structure in which continuous tension in its members forms the basis for structural integrity. Fuller most famously demonstrated the concept of tensegrity in architecture through the design of geodesic domes while his student, artist Kenneth Snelson, applied the concept of tensegrity to create sculptures that appear to defy gravity (Figure 1). Snelson’s tensegrity sculptures have minimal components and achieve their stability through dynamic distribution of tensile and compressive forces amongst their members to create internal balance [1]. It was upon viewing Snelson’s sculptures that Donald Ingber became inspired by their structural efficiency and dynamic force balance to adopt tensegrity as a paradigm upon which to analyze cell structure and mechanics. It has been 30 years since the premier appearance of the cellular tensegrity model and although the model is still much under debate, empirical evidence suggests that the model may explain a wide variety of phenomena ranging from tumor growth to cell motility [1–4].

Abstract:
The radical aesthetic of the historical avant-garde movements has often been explained as a reaction to the catastrophic experience of the First World War and a denouncement of the bourgeoisie’s responsibility for its horrors. This article explores a blind spot in these familiar interpretations of the international avant-garde. Not only the violence of the World War but also the experience of a worldwide deadly pandemic, the Spanish flu, have moulded the literary and artistic production of the 1920s. In this paper, I explore this hypothesis through the example of Mário de Andrade’s famous book of poetry Pauliceia desvairada (1922), which I reinterpret in the light of historical studies on the Spanish flu in São Paulo. An in-depth examination of all parts of this important early opus of the Brazilian Modernism shows that Mário de Andrade’s poetic images of urban coexistence simultaneously aim at a radical renewal of language and at a melancholic coming to terms with a traumatic pandemic past.
