Abstract:
Mathematical models show qualitative and quantitative dependencies between the structure, physico- chemical properties and activities of the investigated compounds. There are different rules for the prediction of good bioavailability, and one of the most well-known is the Lipinski rule. The rule is related to the molecular properties important for a drug’s pharmacokinetics in the human body: absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME). In addition to the Lipinski rule, there are reported different combinations of criteria that are important predictors of permeability. An additional rule was proposed by Veber. He compared the oral bioavailability of the compound and the permeability of the compound with the molecular flexibility.

Abstract:
Food and food preparation are the elements that usually reveals in works of literature. Its recurrent motif raises the assumption that they must contain some meanings in social and cultural realm. This paper analyses the symbolic meanings of cooking, as part of food preparation, in the British children work of literature, The Famous Five, written by Enid Blyton. The analysis uses theory of semiology proposed by Roland Barthes on denotative and connotative meanings and it is conducted through close-reading. The analysis results in how cooking becomes: first, a routine obligation, where the women cook mostly spend their time doing their work in the kitchen and work orderly to please; second, cooking as a marker of maturity for coming-of-age girls, in which teenage becomes the time marker that a girl must be able to cook; third, cooking as a marker of gender-based job division, where women should involve in domestic works, while men dedicate in public sphere. The children’s literature becomes one of the effective tools to embed the values and beliefs in children’s mind as childhood is the golden age to receive any information through the children’s senses.

Abstract:
In this essay, Enid Blyton’s book Five Fall into Adventure is analyzed with a focus on behavior patterns, stereotypes and power division. Intersectionality is used as an approach and a close reading of passages is used as a method. I argue that the novel could work as a good starting point for raising important questions in the classroom, despite the criticism which has been directed towards Blyton’s works. Although the way in which Blyton portrays gender stereotypes is often more acknowledged by critics, this book could be an especially useful tool when touching upon the questions of class and ethnicity. The essay also demonstrates that the criticized aspects of the books, such as them being considered sexist, should be further analyzed, emphasized and discussed, rather than suppressed, because they could serve as a good starting point for dealing with questions which are important to touch upon in teaching situations. Inequality, sexism and xenophobia are examples of such questions.

Abstract:
From the second half of the Nineteenth century on, Detective fiction for young readers has become one of the most appreciates genres of children’s literature, especially thanks to the growing attention that has been shown through the years, both on the part of authors and editors and of the juvenile audience. This dissertation is composed of three main chapters, each of them exploring different aspects of detective fiction in children’s literature. The first chapter focuses on the development of the detective genre both in adult and children literature, exploring the main points that have made the success of the genre possible, from Sherlock Holmes to Harry Potter. The second chapter analyses the conventions of detective fiction applied to children’s literature, starting with the structure of the novel and with the role of the child and the narrator. Three works of fiction are used as reference: The Case of the Baker Street Irregular by Robert Newmann ,The Bastables series by Edith Nesbit and The Famous Five series by Enid Blyton, the focus being in particular on the last two. The third and last chapter deals with the innovations typical of detective fiction for young readers that cannot be found in adult literature in the two novels previously analysed: the relationship between the child protagonist and the family, the importance of the environment in which the child lives, and the influence of gender in the development of the story.

Howard, Catherine Elaine. ""But chiefly we now engaged in mutual listening": Participation in "Art as Experience" and "Let Us Now Praise Famous Men"." Thesis, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/1911/16738.

Full text
Abstract:
James Agee and Walker Evans' Let Us Now Praise Famous Men and John Dewey's Art as Experience converge in several fundamental ways, all hinging on the notion of participation in art. Although Agee and Evans may seem at first glance to be stylistically mismatched in their book, an examination of their work in light of pragmatic aesthetic theories introduced by Dewey reveals several ways in which they meet. For Dewey experience and community are the major components in confronting existence; Agee and Evans also examine their tenant families in terms of experience and community. Specifically, they approach Deweyan goals in emphasizing the art of the everyday, in using art as a communicative tool to improve a social situation, and in employing art as a way to approximate "truth." Thinking in terms of experience, the more subjective individual factor, gives rise to the idea of perception, of basing one's aesthetic frame on current experience and memories of past experiences. Agee and Evans both participate in this process, which Dewey calls "consummatory experience." In addition, both artists evoke consummatory experiences from the reader. The more objective factor, community, leads to a consideration of democracy, a cooperative of shared moral values. Again, Agee and Evans come together in examining community and in searching for democracy, particularly in their uses of art for communication. A fundamental problem with subject-object dichotomy occurs both in Dewey's theory and in Agee and Evans' work. Subjects, those observing, and objects, those observed, are not equal. Some of the objects that Agee and Evans examine are human beings, potential subjects, who are not allowed to participate in consummatory experience. Dewey emphasizes that thinking of subjects and objects as separate entities is not fruitful; rather, subjectivity and objectivity are processes to be undertaken, and true art occurs when subject and object merge. Although Agee and Evans fall short of a merging of subject and object, both of them mix subjective and objective techniques in their respective portraits of a time and a place. Agee, Evans, and Dewey meet in their uses of participation, both in goal and in method.

Abstract:
From 1972 until 1989, the artist trio General Idea produced FILE Megazine. The first eight issues of FILE, published from 1972 – 1975, are the focus of this thesis. They stand apart from the later issues because their covers hijacked the look and iconic logo of Life magazine. The red rectangle with white block letters attracted the attention of Time Inc. and resulted in a lawsuit. Rather than fight the corporate giant, General Idea changed their logo after the autumn 1975 issue. FILE, like many artists’ magazines, is typically discussed in idealistic language that privileges the subversive or democratic intentions of the publication while neglecting its significance as a device for the promotion of community and collaboration. I argue that General Idea envisioned FILE as a utopian project intended to produce the world they sought to live in. Authors frequently employ FILE as a tool to discuss General Idea’s work, focusing on it as a mirror or archive of a larger project and emphasizing FILE’s humorous, bawdy, and irreverent aspects. In this thesis, I situate FILE in terms of its historical, art historical, and theoretical frameworks. I pay particular attention to General Idea’s early involvement in the mail art network, FILE’s relationship to 1960s and 1970s artists’ magazines and magazine art, the contemporaneous social and political climate in Canada, and General Idea’s investigation and employment of theoretical frameworks culled from Marshall McLuhan’s text The Medium is the Message and Roland Barthes’ book Mythologies.
text

The purpose of this study is to investigate what kinds of problems that 4-H agents encounter when promoting extension services; and to analyze their coping process with the theory of social support. It also intends to provide some suggestions for the human resources management of 4-H club. Chingshui, Shalu, Longging, Wuchi, and Wufeng famers’ associations in Taichung City were selected as targets for this study. A semi-structured interview was conducted from May 26th to May 30th 2013; and five agents, aged from 30 to 58, were interviewed. The findings showed that the problems for 4-H agents including: 1. budget was insufficient to support 4-H activities; 2. the administration did not provide enough official resources and mental support; 3. it was getting more and more difficult to recruit 4-H members and agents. In addition, the social support, which 4-H agents received during the difficulty coping process, was mainly the emotional support and had direct effect. It mostly came from agents’ families, the growth and reflections from 4-H members and the appreciation from 4-H members’ parents. It made 4-H agents be healthy both mentally and physically and felt happiness, so that it reduced the frustration and stress of agents when dealing with problems.

Abstract:
AbstractBeing a teacher is an esteemed position in Finland. Finnish class teachers are academically educated professionals in five-year masters level programmes, where only a small percentage of applicants are accepted. However, in recent years, more teachers have reported having intentions to leave the profession, and there has been a slight decline in the number of applicants to teacher education programmes too. In this chapter, we elaborate Finnish expectations of teaching as a profession, set by society on the one hand, and teachers themselves on the other. Society sets both explicit and implicit expectations for teachers: teachers’ work is defined by a national curriculum as well as current policy aims, but is also moulded by the surrounding culture and norms. Teachers themselves are likely to have expectations of a personally fulfilling career; expectations that have begun to form already in their years as students in school, observing and learning what teachers and school are like. Schools, ideally, function to both maintain and reform society. We argue that expectations concerning teachers—normative expectations learned through observation in particular—act as part of the way schools maintain society. We ask whether Finnish teacher education today does enough to help teachers to assume their teacher role in society broadly and navigate the constantly changing field of education.

Abstract:
AbstractIn Finland, urban segregation has been identified as a new and increasing challenge for pursuing the ideal of the egalitarian comprehensive school. Yet very little is known of particular school contexts, and public concern over school segregation runs a risk of reproducing segregation by focusing in a stigmatising manner on schools in less advantaged areas. In this chapter, we draw on interview data from five comprehensive schools in the metropolitan area of Helsinki to examine how students of schools located in areas that may be considered disadvantaged talk about their everyday life in the school and residential area. We build on the idea that young people represent their lives as ordinary rather than adopting ‘in-risk’ positions, and examine ways in which the schools and residential areas are discussed. We argue that despite their awareness of local problems and racialised and social class-based inequalities, young people are attached to their schools and residential areas, and tend to describe the problems encountered as manageable. While there are statistical similarities between disadvantaged residential areas, the particular local contexts and their effects for young people’s everyday lives vary from one area to another and according to the young people’s social class and racialised background. This highlights the need to understand the particularities and connections between schools and residential areas in discussions of segregation and in attempts to address it.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Qur’an speaks of giving testimony in the context of five specific situations. In only one of these five cases does it make a distinction between witnesses on the basis of gender, namely in the case that relates to financial transactions, where two women may be required to testify in lieu of one man. The famous phrase about two women witnesses in that case, “so that if one of them forgets/errs the other can remind her”, is a reference not to the inferiority of women’s intellect but rather to the fact that women at the time did not engage in borrowing or lending and were moreover mostly illiterate, making them less effective witnesses should a dispute arise. Meanwhile another one of these five cases outlines when a woman’s testimony is worth more than a man’s, namely when a husband accuses his wife of infidelity—although we never hear anyone mentioning this extraordinary verse or highlighting the principle behind it.

This chapter addresses the question of why the Tudors have been famous for five hundred years. One reason is the availability of actual representations of them through art, which allows people to see what every one of them looked like, or at least what they wanted us to think they looked like. Another is their extraordinary life story. The Tudors are almost the perfect soap — a drama powered by the mechanics and dramas of family relationships.

Abstract:
The Boolean satisfiability problem (SAT) is a famous NP-complete problem in computer science. An effective way for solving a satisfiable SAT problem is the stochastic local search (SLS). However, in this method, the initialization is assigned in a random manner, which impacts the effectiveness of SLS solvers. To address this problem, we propose NLocalSAT. NLocalSAT combines SLS with a solution prediction model, which boosts SLS by changing initialization assignments with a neural network. We evaluated NLocalSAT on five SLS solvers (CCAnr, Sparrow, CPSparrow, YalSAT, and probSAT) with instances in the random track of SAT Competition 2018. The experimental results show that solvers with NLocalSAT achieve 27% ~ 62% improvement over the original SLS solvers.

Abstract:
The CO2 laser with a saturable absorber (LSA) generates the continuous pulse sequence which is well known as a passive Q-switching (PQS). Single pulse consists a narrow peak with the long oscillating tail. The pulse length and its shape essentially depends from a choice of the absorbing media and its parameters The occurrence of chaos in this system has been demonstrated by the experimental and theoretical investigations. Chaos arises according one of the famous scenarios. The theoretical model adequately describing the dynamical characteristics consists of the five differential equations for the field, polarizations and population differences of the amplifying and absorbing cells [1]. In this model LSA has three fixed points corresponding to the trivial laser-off solution and stationary solution. As the recent investigations showed [2,3] depending on the nature of the instability of these points different temporal regimes can arises.

Abstract:
" One of the best manifestations of the ego is in its relation to the other as an identifiable equivalent. This relation is basically and culturally determined by the nature of the observant ego, both dialectically and dialogically. The other serves as an inspiring stimulus that produces a desirable effect on an expressive ego which is aiming at self-expression and actively shaped by that equivalent other. This article investigates the poetic ego in its constant, variable interaction with the Kurds as reflected in the poems of contemporary Iraqi poets who showed sympathy with and support to the Kurdish cause. Exemplary poems will be chosen to depict this reciprocal relationship, shedding light on its unified representation. The article is divided into an introduction and five sections. The concept of the other and its origin, diversity of meanings, and its interdisciplinary suggestiveness are all discussed in the introduction. The five sections, on the other hand, are a study of the various depictions of the Kurds in contemporary Iraqi poetry. These depictions are shown in the Kurdish brotherhood, the commemoration of famous Kurdish figures, the celebration of the Kurdish place and festivities and their role in identity formation, and remembering its setbacks and inculcating it in the collective memory"

In ASME 2013 Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/pvp2013-97675.

Abstract:
The fluid handled by reciprocating compressors has to be strictly limited to gas and, under no circumstances, can there be a liquid fraction ingestion, as this event can cause the famous “liquid hammer effect” that can generate catastrophic failures. A study was conducted to evaluate the quantitative effects of the ingestion of a liquid slug into a reciprocating compressor cylinder with the goal of calculating the pressure distribution on the piston during such an event. The Multi-phase CFD ANSYS FSI software, utilized to simulate the behavior of a mixture of gaseous and liquid hydrocarbons during the delivery phase, has shown that the pressure inside the cylinder increases up to five times the normal pressure. This new approach can be helpful in the design stage or for root cause failure analysis of large compressors such as the ones utilized in the natural gas, refining, and LDPE industries.

Abstract:
This paper takes the rhyme analysis of the famous poem Pulling up the Silver Bottle from the Bottom of the Well in Bo Juyis New Yuefu as an example, discussing three important issues in the study of Bo Juyi’s New Yuefu poetic form: 1) put forward five differences between Bo Juyi’s New Yuefu and traditional Yuefu; 2) put forward “the view that rhyme and passage are closely related” and discusse the characteristics of rhyme segment, which reflects the plot structure of the poem and is highly consistent with the music segment. As a poem of “preparing for music”, the New Yuefu has many similarities with the traditional Yuefu in its poetic form; 3) put forward “the theory of the relationship between Yuefu melody and emotion”. This theory is only applicable to literature with musical accompaniment, such as New Yuefu; 4) put forward that the New Yuefu has “colorful movement theory”.

Abstract:
James Buchanan and Richard Wagner in their famous book “Democracy in Deficit” note that democracy has not enough fiscal discipline because the citizens’ representatives are chosen in the election and they take the budgetary decisions seeking the re-election. Their theory of public choice may suggest the existence of a positive relationship between the democracy’s quality and the public debt level reflecting the long-lasting consequences of the budgetary decisions of policy-makers. Thus, we formulate the following research question: Is democratic system harmful for public finance? To operationalize the democratic system, we use five democracy indices (i.e., electoral, liberal, participatory, deliberative, and egalitarian), and the public debt to operationalize the threat for public finance. Conclusions put in a new light the theory, as first the study confirmed that there are statistically significant relationships between democracy’s quality and public debt and, however not in case of every democracy index and every European country.

Abstract:
Balik Pulau is a uniquely situated landscape on the western side of Penang Island, being both quieter and greener in comparison to Georgetown. It is famous among locals for producing high quality durians. Thus, making it a hotspot for agritourism entrepreneurs. This paper aims to explore the agritourism prospects in Balik Pulau to better understand the motivations and challenges faced by agritourism entrepreneurs in the area. Through in-depth interviews with entrepreneurs, this study has established that the motivation of agricultural entrepreneurs is highly dependent on their goals. Their motivations are also influenced by their individual financial situation, health concerns and eagerness to share and preserve ethnic and agricultural knowledge. This study has identified five challenges faced by agritourism entrepreneurs which are inadequate support from government, private and community sectors, difficulties in employing staff, insufficient infrastructure, seasonal income and encroaching urbanisation. This paper suggests Balik Pulau can be marketed as Penang’s agritourism hub and a one-stop centre for durian lovers.

Abstract:
Zahirad-Din Muhammad Babur, who was associated with Kabul for about twenty-five years of his forty-seven years of life, gained fame as the royal poet of Kabul in the late XVth and early XVIthcenturies. Despite the fact that Zahirad-Din Muhammad Babur reached Amir Temur on his father's side and Genghis Khan on his mother's side, he mentions these two relationships in his famous book "Baburi Tuzuki" and calls himself a Turk (Uzbek). After Uzbek Babur was defeated several times by Shaybani Khan, he was forced to emigrate from Ferghana to Kabul, the current capital of Afghanistan, in order to try his luck in Kabulistan. Here the people of Kabul (Kabulistan) welcomed Babur and Babur became the Uzbek king of Kabul and from there he invaded India to expand his rule. This brave cosmopolitan Turk/Uzbek world-goer was a clever poet, a brilliant writer and a powerful ruler -a king. Babur was 22 years old when he was crowned in Kabul, and Babur's nickname Mirza was changed to the title of Shah.

Tweet, Justin S., Vincent L. Santucci, Kenneth Convery, Jonathan Hoffman, and Laura Kirn. Channel Islands National Park: Paleontological resource inventory (public version). National Park Service, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/nrr-2278664.

Full text
Abstract:
Channel Island National Park (CHIS), incorporating five islands off the coast of southern California (Anacapa Island, San Miguel Island, Santa Barbara Island, Santa Cruz Island, and Santa Rosa Island), has an outstanding paleontological record. The park has significant fossils dating from the Late Cretaceous to the Holocene, representing organisms of the sea, the land, and the air. Highlights include: the famous pygmy mammoths that inhabited the conjoined northern islands during the late Pleistocene; the best fossil avifauna of any National Park Service (NPS) unit; intertwined paleontological and cultural records extending into the latest Pleistocene, including Arlington Man, the oldest well-dated human known from North America; calichified “fossil forests”; records of Miocene desmostylians and sirenians, unusual sea mammals; abundant Pleistocene mollusks illustrating changes in sea level and ocean temperature; one of the most thoroughly studied records of microfossils in the NPS; and type specimens for 23 fossil taxa. Paleontological research on the islands of CHIS began in the second half of the 19th century. The first discovery of a mammoth specimen was reported in 1873. Research can be divided into four periods: 1) the few early reports from the 19th century; 2) a sustained burst of activity in the 1920s and 1930s; 3) a second burst from the 1950s into the 1970s; and 4) the modern period of activity, symbolically opened with the 1994 discovery of a nearly complete pygmy mammoth skeleton on Santa Rosa Island. The work associated with this paleontological resource inventory may be considered the beginning of a fifth period. Fossils were specifically mentioned in the 1938 proclamation establishing what was then Channel Islands National Monument, making CHIS one of 18 NPS areas for which paleontological resources are referenced in the enabling legislation. Each of the five islands of CHIS has distinct paleontological and geological records, each has some kind of fossil resources, and almost all of the sedimentary formations on the islands are fossiliferous within CHIS. Anacapa Island and Santa Barbara Island, the two smallest islands, are primarily composed of Miocene volcanic rocks interfingered with small quantities of sedimentary rock and covered with a veneer of Quaternary sediments. Santa Barbara stands apart from Anacapa because it was never part of Santarosae, the landmass that existed at times in the Pleistocene when sea level was low enough that the four northern islands were connected. San Miguel Island, Santa Cruz Island, and Santa Rosa Island have more complex geologic histories. Of these three islands, San Miguel Island has relatively simple geologic structure and few formations. Santa Cruz Island has the most varied geology of the islands, as well as the longest rock record exposed at the surface, beginning with Jurassic metamorphic and intrusive igneous rocks. The Channel Islands have been uplifted and faulted in a complex 20-million-year-long geologic episode tied to the collision of the North American and Pacific Places, the initiation of the San Andreas fault system, and the 90° clockwise rotation of the Transverse Ranges, of which the northern Channel Islands are the westernmost part. Widespread volcanic activity from about 19 to 14 million years ago is evidenced by the igneous rocks found on each island.
