Abstract:
The current investigation measured the effects of increasing stimulus duration on listeners′ ability to recognize famous voices. In addition, the investigation studied the influence of different types of cues on the naming of voices that could not be named before. Participants were presented with samples of famous and Unfamiliar voices and were asked to decide whether or not the samples were spoken by a famous person. The duration of each sample increased in seven steps from 0.25 s up to a maximum of 2 s. Voice recognition improvements with stimulus duration were with a growth function. Gains were most rapid within the first second and less pronounced thereafter. When participants were unable to name a famous voice, they were cued with either a second voice sample, the occupation, or the initials of the celebrity. Initials were most effective in eliciting the name only when semantic information about the speaker had been accessed prior to cue presentation. Paralleling previous research on face naming, this may indicate that voice naming is contingent on previous activation of person-specific semantic information.

Abstract:
Abstract Objective The greater resilience of older memories relative to recent memories has primarily been demonstrated in clinical groups, but this phenomenon has been less extensively examined in cognitively intact older adults. Additionally, most studies of person-identity have only examined recognition or familiarity of a famous face or name, and there has been less systematic study of access to more specific person-identity semantic knowledge. The current study examined the effect of both memory age and extent of semantic knowledge on famous name recognition and retrieval of person-identity biographical information in healthy older adults. Method We examined recognition accuracy and response time of famous names at three time epochs (recent fame, transitory fame and enduring fame) in cognitively intact older adults. We also compared access to semantic knowledge that differed on the degree of specificity of biographical information: categorical, associative, and attribute knowledge. Results As predicted, participants recognized transitory famous names more quickly and accurately than recent famous names. Additionally, participants recognized enduring famous names more accurately than transitory famous names and recent names. We also found that categorical semantic knowledge was accessed more quickly and accurately than semantic knowledge for associative and attribute information. Conclusions These findings provide data on the cognitive structure and retrieval of person-identity knowledge and memory age in older cognitively intact individuals.

Abstract:
Two experiments examined repetition priming in the recognition of famous voices. In Experiment 1, reaction times for fame decisions to famous voice samples were shorter than in an unprimed condition, when voices were primed by a different voice sample of the same person having been presented in an earlier phase of the experiment. No effect of voice repetition was observed for non-famous voices. In Experiment 2, it was investigated whether this priming effect is voice-specific or whether it is related to post-perceptual processes in person recognition. Recognizing a famous voice was again primed by having earlier heard a different voice sample of that person. Although an earlier exposure to that person's name did not cause any priming, there was some indication of priming following an earlier exposure to that person's face. Finally, earlier exposure to the identical voice sample (as compared to a different voice sample from the same person) caused a considerable bias towards responding “famous”—i.e. performance benefits for famous but costs for nonfamous voices. The findings suggest that (1) repetition priming invoice recognition primarily involves the activation of perceptual representations of voices, and (2) it is important to determine the conditions in which priming causes bias effects that need to be disentangled from performance benefits.

A question that has recently attracted considerable attention is this:What is the nature and significance of the normative relationship a person bears to herself (where the self is understood to include the whole embodied person)? On one view, it is held that persons are self-owners: as Locke put it in one of the more famous passages in the Second Treatise:[E]very man has a property in his own person: this no body has any right to but himself. The labour of his body, and the work of his hands, we may say, are properly his.

Abstract In the 16 months before TIME magazine naming Greta Thunberg its Person of the Year, as her influence grew, so too did the news media’s attempts to make sense of her. This project analyzes profiles of Greta Thunberg to understand how journalists constructed the persona that has become “Greta.” We argue the paradoxical framing of Thunberg as exceptional and fierce and childlike contributes to an alternative construction of girlhood grounded in the positive portrayal of her Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis. While featuring ASD as her “superpower” is potentially progressive, we argue foregrounding Thunberg’s whiteness and age cements her construction as the iconic voice of the climate crisis movement, potentially downplaying the need for collective action to end climate change.

Huang, Chung-Che, and 黃崇哲. "A PCA and ANN Based Timbre Conversion Method for Synthesizing a Famous Person's Speech." Thesis, 2011. http://ndltd.ncl.edu.tw/handle/y2t622.

Full text
Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣科技大學<br>資訊工程系<br>99<br>In this thesis, we try to solve the problems encountered when applying the PCA (principle component analysis) and ANN (artificial neural network) based timbre-conversion method under the situation that only a small and non-parallel corpus is available. Then, this method is adopted to construct a Mandarin speech synthesis system to synthesize speech with a famous person&apos;s timbre. We design special classification methods for syllable initial and final, respectively, to decrease the number of categories. For the syllable signals of a category, an HMM of a state-sharing structure is trained in order to obtain a fixed number of DCC (discrete cepstral coefficient) vectors for each syllable signal. This state-sharing structure of HMM is intended to improve the left-to-right HMM structure. An ANN is adopted to map the PCA coefficients of a source syllable into the PCA coefficients of a target syllable. For training this ANN, we propose a method to classify a context under which a syllable is pronounced. This method combines precise classification and rough classification. In terms of the result of context classification, we can find some source syllables that are most similarly in context for a target syllable. For each category of syllable initial and final, a separate ANN for mapping PCA coefficients is trained after the DCC vectors are analyzed with PCA. In the synthesis stage, we integrate the function of PCA and ANN based timbre-conversion into the Mandarin speech synthesis system developed previously by others. By using this system, some speech signals are synthesized with timbre converted, and used to conduct listening tests. The results of the tests show that the timbre of the synthesized speech is a little similar to that of a target famous person. However, the signal quality and the characteristic of prosody need to be improved in the future.

Full text
Abstract:
碩士<br>國立中央大學<br>藝術學研究所<br>102<br>Danshui’s Guanyin Mountain (淡水觀音山) was renowned for its natural beauty and considered one of the “Eight Views” (八景) as early as in Qing dynasty. During the Japanese occupation, Guanyin Mountain and Danshui Harbour together made up the area known as “Danshui”, and were referred to as “Taiwan’s New Eight Views” (臺灣新八景). Images of Guanyin Mountain often appeared in photographs, postcards and paintings of the Japanese colonial period. Even after WWII, Guanyin Mountain continued to attract artistic attention, as many artists developed variations on the theme, using it to explore different artistic problems and to practice modern painting techniques. This thesis investigates Guanyin Mountain as the subject of landscape paintings and explores its visual development from before to after WWII. It covers the evolution of Guanyin Mountain as a subject, with a focus on well known Taiwanese artists during the Japanese colonisation, as well as post-war works from the Chi-Yuan Painting Society (紀元畫會). This paper consists of three parts. In the first, it investigates the visual concepts and constructions found in images of the Guanyin Mountain, looking back at the significance of its inclusion in the “Eight Views”, from the Qing dynasty through to the Japanese occupation. Chapter two and three, on the other hand, each examines three painters and their respective perceptions of the mountain. More specifically, chapter two looks at three artists of the colonial period—Liao Jichun (廖繼春, 1902-1976), Guo Bochuan (郭柏川, 1901-1974) and Chen Huikun (陳慧坤, 1907-2011); while chapter three discusses three painters from the post-war Chi-Yuan Painting Society—Chen Dewang (陳德旺, 1910-1984), Liao Dezheng (廖德政, 1920- ) and Jin Runzuo (金潤作, 1922-1983). Both groups shared similar educational and artistic backgrounds, and produced an abundance of images of the Guanyin Mountain. This thesis compares the two and their works, how they expressed their perceptions of the landscape and what artistic problems they were trying to tackle, thereby unpicking the developments in the motif, observing how the artistic viewpoint changed from one era to the other, and identifying the role of Guanyin Mountain in Taiwanese art history.

Abstract:
碩士<br>臺北市立師範學院<br>視覺藝術研究所<br>89<br>Abstract Figure painting is the earliest and thoroughly developed subject with respect to painting in the Chinese painting history. It has been constituted far earlier than any other painting subjects, such as the painting of cattle and animals, flowers and birds, landscape, and so on, whatever in the aspect of technique (or skill), content, and theory. In the mean time, the representative painting of Buddhism and Taoism derived from figure painting was overwhelmingly stimulated and well-rounded developed following by the flourishing popularity of Buddhism and Taoism. On the other hand, it has also been enthusiastically and popularly created by most of painters born in the Tang Dynasty because the style of painting, which was generated from Buddhism and Taoism, provided people more imaginations of freedom and creativity than merely figure painting. Most of ordinary painting annals will only pay attention to the early or high Period of Tang Dynasty when it comes to talk about the painting styles as well as distinctions during the Tang Period. What’s more, when talking about the artistic trend of Tang Dynasty, most of people will focus the most on the magnificent, confident, and all-embracing flourishing phenomena of high Tang Dynasty. However, the historical annals didn’t pay much attention to the artistic trend during the mid- and late Tang Period. On one hand, those annals treated the mid- and late Tang Period as the bridge linking up the art of Tang and Sung Dynasty. On the other hand, they concentrated very much on the Chinese court painting, flowers and birds painting as well as landscape painting style during the period of Five Dynasty. As for the art development of Mid- and Late Tang Dynasty, the annals paltered with illustrating the artistic circumstances casually. Nevertheless, by means of painting history regarding to Tang and Sung Dynasty, such as «Record of Famous Painters of Successive Dynasty»,«Shiuan-Hoh Commentaries on Painting»,«Record of Experiences of Paintings», people can thereby visualize the radiant phenomena in relation to the development of painting of Buddhism and Taoism during the Mid- and Late Tang Period after analyzing all kinds of descriptive data. It has been disclosed from the fact that the painting style derived from Buddhism and Taoism has demonstrated the both many producing quantities and radiant situation no matter from the perspective of the portraitists who are so good at painting the portraits of Buddhism and Taoism or the viewpoint of narratives which has depicted the topics of the painting of Buddhism and Taoism. The analytic emphases of this dissertation are as follows: 1.Analyzing and comparing the change of painting contents, which the painters of Tang Dynasty were so good at, from those preserving painting histories since Tang and Sung Dynasty. By the way, the mission was primarily focusing on the « Record of Famous Painters of Successive Dynasty » and «Shiuan-Hoh Commentaries on Painting», and complementarily combining with «Record of Experiences of Paintings», «Record of famous Paintings of I-Chou», and then, corresponding those descriptions within painting history to the verification of mural paintings of the cavern. 2.Analyzing and comparing the change of painting contents, which the painters were born before or after the revolt of the rebellion of An Lu-shan and Shih Sze-ming were so good at or the fluctuations of volumes based on all topics of preserving painting work pieces, from the painting history taken the revolt of the rebellion of An Lu-shan and Shih Sze-ming as the point of delimitation to examine the previous consequence of research. As a result, the research can be treated as the more persuasive quantitative illustration with respect to the rise and decline of the Buddhism and Taoism painting history during the Mid- and Late Tang Period. 3.Analyzing the transformation of locations that can be well illustrated the abundance of the painting of the Tang Dynasty from the depiction of painters’ province and county of their family registers directly derived from the painting history. Meanwhile, we can accordingly realize the abundant evidence of the painting style of Szechwan during the end of Tang, Five Dynasty, as to the early Sung Dynasty. 4.From the depiction of the painting history in company with the preserved painting work pieces of the Tang Dynasty, on the primary part of the Fo-kuang temple of Wu-tai mountain of Shansi province and the Mogao Grottoes of Dunhuang, in order to more clearly clarify the style characteristics and transformation of the Buddhism and Taoism painting history during the Mid- and Late Tang Period. 5.Reappearing the peak and golden periods of the art of the Buddhism and Taoism painting history during the Mid- and Late Tang Period by means of the record of Tang and Sung painting history as well as the contents of annals so as to explore it effect toward every sort of painting subject to the subsequent dynasties.

Abstract:
This diploma thesis covers the individual citizens' perception of suburban events in order to discuss the point of view of the early modern Czech citizen and their ability to gain information of the world around through the analysis of such suburban events that were registered in the chosen chronicles, originating between the years 1575-1600, a period that is considered "a golden age of the Czech cities". First, the background of the chroniclers is outlined, because it might have influenced the choice of events they decided to include in their works, i.e. the position of the concrete city, the level of education in the said period or the author's personal life. Second, the general knowledge of the authors is described in the thesis through the means of analysis of the type of recorded information (e.g. Turkish wars, the deaths of famous persons, wildfires, councils and the like). In other words, the thesis is to point out what type of information was considered to be the most interesting or extraordinary to the wider public, and which circles were usually covered by the chroniclers. Therefore, the reader is to discover the world of thought of the early modern citizen, which has been restricted to us because of the lack of other than administrative materials, and the impulses that influenced and...

Abstract:
AbstractMargaret Ann Harvey was born on 18 May 1792 in St Peter Port, which is the capital city of Guernsey, the second-largest of the Channel Islands; and died there on 4 April 1903 at the reported age of 110. In this contribution, her exceptional age is thoroughly validated. Considering the data collected on her parents and siblings, there is no possibility of an erroneous linkage, as the name of Margaret and Ann appears only once in the birth records, her family’s birth intervals were narrow, and the dates of death of her siblings have been checked. As she did not have children, her name was not found in civil registration records after her marriage in 1823 until her death in 1903. This lack of records might have made it difficult to prove that the person who died at age 110 in 1903 was the same person who married in 1823 at age 30. Fortunately, she was enumerated in six successive censuses from 1851 to 1901, and a comparison of the ages reported in these censuses and her exact ages shows only minor deviations. Moreover, numerous letters and her numerous diaries help us to follow her life during that long period. Upon reaching age 100, she became famous in Guernsey. Thus, there are many photos of her and press articles about her life. These data support the reliability of the reported chronology of her life events, and thus allow us to validate this exceptional case. Accordingly, we can state that Margaret Ann Harvey Neve is the first documented female supercentenarian. As in the case of recently deceased supercentenarian Emma Morano, her life spanned three successive centuries – albeit one century earlier.

This chapter analyzes two stars’ biopics from the 1950s: Carlos Velo’s Torero! on bullfighter Luis Procuna and Sophia: Her Own Story (1980) featuring the famous Loren playing herself and her mother in a TV biopic. The chapter analyzes the constraints posed to celebrity self-reenactment: how different temporal orders: of biology (the star’s aging body), the recurrent circuitry of star iconography, and the flexible order of aesthetic representation balance precariously in these narratives. Taking the cue from André Bazin’s analysis on bullfighting and death in the cinema, this chapter analyzes the specific roles of archival footage and of reenactment in star biopics. In particular, it looks at how reenactment’s temporal indeterminacy contrasts with documentary images of bullfights. The chapter situates Velo’s work within Mexican experiments with ciné-verdad as well as Zavattini’s international influence in these efforts in 1950s Mexico.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the Italian cinema contexts for Cesare Zavattini’s radical reconception of the notion of the nonprofessional actor—that everyone acts his or her life on camera—during the waning of neorealism. Pedinamento, closely tracking an event, and film-lampo, the investigation film, are analyzed as a transition from neorealist precepts to a verité focus on named individuals who turn their lives into exemplary narratives. Episodes from Love in the City (1953)—Zavattini and Maselli’s The Story of Caterina and Antonioni’s Attempted Suicides—are analyzed in their articulation of narrative of self-revision. A complementary omnibus project We the Women (1953) on famous stars’ everyday existence suggests the ways early 1950s reenactment engages thematically with the star system (e.g., Guarini’s Contest: 4 Actresses; 1 Hope, Franciolini’s Alida Valli) and with questions of authenticity and theatricality. In-person reenactment leads to modern cinema hybrids mixing acting and self-presentation (e.g., Visconti’s take on Magnani, Rossellini’s on Bergman).

Abstract:
Anscombe’s famous paper on the first person makes claims which may seem bewildering or absurd, that we have ‘unmediated conceptions’ of some of our states and actions, that these conceptions are ‘subjectless’, and also, very controversially, that ‘I’ does not refer. Anscombe would not have identified herself as a pragmatist. But we can gain insight into and sympathy with some of these claims (even if we do not end up fully endorsing all of them) by seeing that they arise from her asking central pragmatist questions about ‘I’, that is how we use the word and why using it that way is important for us. Her answer centres on what she calls ‘self-consciousness’, that is, our ability to speak for ourselves, to say how things are with us, or what we are doing without checking to make sure that it is really ourselves we are speaking about.

Abstract:
The Jeong Gam’s Writings (鄭鑑錄, Jeong Gam nok) is a famous Korean prophecy book that appeared in the late Joseon period (1392–1897) yet gained its popularity by the end of the 19th century and is still well-known by most of Korean people. The main idea of the book is expressed through a dialogue mundap 問答 between two scholars: Jeong Gam (鄭鑑) and Yi Shim (李沁). It is not known whether they were real or imagined characters, or prototypes of any real historical figures. The Writings also include prophecies made by other scholars who lived earlier. There have been several texts written either in hanmun or in ǒnmun. In the Veritable Records of the Joseon dynasty (朝鮮王朝 實錄, Joseon wangjo sillok) it is first mentioned in 1782. The article is aimed to introduce the book to Russian audience focusing on its importance and its influence on the Korean history in the late 18th–19th century, namely mass uprisings.

Abstract:
Analyses of laboratory wave records including extreme crests, based on the continuous wavelet transform, are reported. The analyses have provided further insight into the spectral characteristics of these extreme events. During the period of the extreme wave crest, spectral levels over all frequencies are substantially elevated by comparison with average spectrum for the complete wave record. This was also observed in a similar analysis of the famous New Year wave event that occurred at the Draupner platform. The analyses also indicate that nonlinear effects are active during the crest event, second-order effects being particular strong and indicating phase-locking of high frequency waves to freely-propagating waves with frequencies close to the spectral peak. These nonlinear effects appear to be strong only in the vicinity of the extreme.

Bourisli, Raed I., and Meshal F. Al-Mutairi. "Novel Arrangements of Tube Banks With Enhanced Heat Transfer and Manageable Pressure Drop Requirement." In ASME 2014 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2014-36862.

Full text
Abstract:
The main objective of this study is to investigate the existence of a more efficient arrangement of tubes in tube banks. The famous inline arrangement generally requires manageable pressure drops but results in poor overall heat transfer. On the other hand, the more common staggered arrangement results in better heat transfer yet with added pressure drop requirements. The key idea here is to have a compromise between the two where the tubes are staggered gradually in a way that forms a longitudinal sinusoidal wave. The process is simulated numerically using the finite volume method. After rigorous validation of the 2-D code using a number of published experimental and numerical results, and a number of established correlations, a parametric study is done to determine the optimum period of the sine wave of the tubes, the number of tubes in one period, and the amplitude. Results show that the newly proposed arrangement reduces pressure drop requirement compared to the staggered arrangement while maintaining the same level of heat transfer. In at least one arrangement, both the pressure drop and heat transfer were better than the staggered one, albeit only slightly for the latter.

Levantovych, Oksana. COVID 19 MEDIA COVERAGE: AN ANALYSIS OF HEORHII POCHEPTSOV’S VIEW. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2021.49.11061.

Abstract:
The article analyses the peculiarities of the coverage of the covid pandemic in the Ukrainian media, the emphasis placed by the media in news, and how the online mode of modern life and social distancing affects the growth of media influence. Special attention is paid to the view of the famous publicist Heorhii Pocheptsov, who does not exclude the possibility that the coronavirus was invented intentionally to control millions of people around the world. Permanently, the world faces numerous challenges of different scales: economic, military, socio-political, environmental, epidemiological ones. In 2020, the largest and the most unexpected event, undoubtedly, was the deadly coronavirus pandemic, which spread from the small Chinese province of Wuhan to the whole world and already took more than one million people’s lives in less than a year. Thus, the media, that in the post-information society actually have an unprecedented impact on people, form a person’s perception of such challenges. As a result, our understanding of the pandemic is directly related to the information we consume from the media. In fact, from the very start of quarantine, the media space began to be captured by analytical materials in which experts from various fields tried to predict what the world would be like after the end of coronavirus. These experts were of two types: some claimed that irreversible changes would deepen the permanent economic and socio-political crisis, and by claiming that they intensified panic, while others argued that any crisis is a chance to restart and grow. The experts put different emphases covering the covid pandemic in the media, but it is important to pay attention to the analysis of the famous publicist, propaganda researcher – Heorhii Pocheptsov, who sees the coronavirus as a tool to influence millions of people. The pandemic will end sooner or later, but no matter whether the virus was artificially invented or not, the processes that have already been launched around the world cannot stop as if nothing had happened. But Heorhii Pocheptsov’s opinion about the possible artificial nature of the virus should make us more vigilant while consuming information from TVs or from the online media, as it is possible that this information might be a part of a great game that we were not warned about.

Tweet, Justin S., Vincent L. Santucci, Kenneth Convery, Jonathan Hoffman, and Laura Kirn. Channel Islands National Park: Paleontological resource inventory (public version). National Park Service, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/nrr-2278664.

Full text
Abstract:
Channel Island National Park (CHIS), incorporating five islands off the coast of southern California (Anacapa Island, San Miguel Island, Santa Barbara Island, Santa Cruz Island, and Santa Rosa Island), has an outstanding paleontological record. The park has significant fossils dating from the Late Cretaceous to the Holocene, representing organisms of the sea, the land, and the air. Highlights include: the famous pygmy mammoths that inhabited the conjoined northern islands during the late Pleistocene; the best fossil avifauna of any National Park Service (NPS) unit; intertwined paleontological and cultural records extending into the latest Pleistocene, including Arlington Man, the oldest well-dated human known from North America; calichified “fossil forests”; records of Miocene desmostylians and sirenians, unusual sea mammals; abundant Pleistocene mollusks illustrating changes in sea level and ocean temperature; one of the most thoroughly studied records of microfossils in the NPS; and type specimens for 23 fossil taxa. Paleontological research on the islands of CHIS began in the second half of the 19th century. The first discovery of a mammoth specimen was reported in 1873. Research can be divided into four periods: 1) the few early reports from the 19th century; 2) a sustained burst of activity in the 1920s and 1930s; 3) a second burst from the 1950s into the 1970s; and 4) the modern period of activity, symbolically opened with the 1994 discovery of a nearly complete pygmy mammoth skeleton on Santa Rosa Island. The work associated with this paleontological resource inventory may be considered the beginning of a fifth period. Fossils were specifically mentioned in the 1938 proclamation establishing what was then Channel Islands National Monument, making CHIS one of 18 NPS areas for which paleontological resources are referenced in the enabling legislation. Each of the five islands of CHIS has distinct paleontological and geological records, each has some kind of fossil resources, and almost all of the sedimentary formations on the islands are fossiliferous within CHIS. Anacapa Island and Santa Barbara Island, the two smallest islands, are primarily composed of Miocene volcanic rocks interfingered with small quantities of sedimentary rock and covered with a veneer of Quaternary sediments. Santa Barbara stands apart from Anacapa because it was never part of Santarosae, the landmass that existed at times in the Pleistocene when sea level was low enough that the four northern islands were connected. San Miguel Island, Santa Cruz Island, and Santa Rosa Island have more complex geologic histories. Of these three islands, San Miguel Island has relatively simple geologic structure and few formations. Santa Cruz Island has the most varied geology of the islands, as well as the longest rock record exposed at the surface, beginning with Jurassic metamorphic and intrusive igneous rocks. The Channel Islands have been uplifted and faulted in a complex 20-million-year-long geologic episode tied to the collision of the North American and Pacific Places, the initiation of the San Andreas fault system, and the 90° clockwise rotation of the Transverse Ranges, of which the northern Channel Islands are the westernmost part. Widespread volcanic activity from about 19 to 14 million years ago is evidenced by the igneous rocks found on each island.
