Abstract:
This study compared the performances of 20 middle-aged and 20 older subjects on a Rebus Riddle task that required they retrieve the names of famous persons. Older subjects solved significantly more riddles and responded to prompts designed to aid riddle-solving efforts with significantly greater success than middle-aged subjects. Older subjects also had nonsignificantly faster riddle-solving times than middle-aged subjects. Similar riddles were difficult or easy for both groups. Superior performance of the older group appeared to be related to the age of the subject at the time the persons in the riddles had become famous.

Uma das teorias que chegou ao país nesse período foi o darwinismo. A historioia tem mostrado que muitos indivíduos e grupos sociais se apropriaram de diferentes maneiras da teoria da evolução biológica de Darwin em diversos lugares e épocas. No Brasil, entre aqueles que elegeram essa teoria como bandeira de suas campanhas, estava Augusto César de Miranda Azevedo, médico paulista, que viveu no Rio de Janeiro durante quase toda a década de 1870. Esse personagem ficou conhecido como um dos divulgadores do darwinismo no país. Dois textos publicados por Miranda Azevedo nos anos de 1875 e 1876, além de outros documentos, revelam uma apropriação muito particular do darwinismo, feita pelo médico. Essa apropriação tem como um de seus elementos centrais, a concepção de que certas modificações podem ser orientadas nos indivíduos para se obter perfis desejados de população. Quando relacionamos o discurso darwinista de Miranda Azevedo às suas atividades e ao momento de crises pelo qual o Brasil passava, podemos perceber certos fatores que influenciaram a apropriação da teoria da evolução biológica de Darwin feita pelo médico. A valorização de estímulos ambientais na produção e desenvolvimento de características nos indivíduos da população, e a conseqüente transmissão dessas características para os descendentes, poderiam ser concepções bastante adequadas para indivíduos ou grupos cuja preocupação era tentar produzir uma população capaz de fazer a nação progredir

Abstract:
This dissertation charts the publishing history, marketing, packaging, authorship, and reviewing of WWII personal narratives, explores connections between wartime narratives and issues of censorship, rationing, and the use of books as propaganda, and closely examines the main themes of twenty-five of the nearly two hundred written between 1942 and 1945. The books being assayed offered an insider's view of combat from every theater of war and every branch of the service as well as the Merchant Marines.;An offshoot of the documentary impulse of the Thirties, the personal narrative became an American publishing phenomenon during the next decade's war. In general, the fundamental character of the American white male hero was portrayed in the trials and triumphs of the citizen-soldier of democracy. Narratives celebrated the transformation of the Thirties "common man" into the "giant in the earth" figure, cast simultaneously in an ordinary and epical mold.;In each decade, monumental challenges galvanized witnesses to provide insightful information about events which affected millions. to serve a different set of war-related needs, however, the WWII books recruited new writers, acquired new commercial sponsors, and drew upon Hemingway's concrete renditions of war. In order to sustain morale on the home front and in the armed forces, civilians obtained these war narratives (GI's received a different set of Armed Services Editions). For the publishers of personal narratives, patriotism and profits went hand in hand.;The war narratives performed crucial ideological work. They engaged issues that touched deep anxieties in the public. Amidst a vast military effort that mobilized millions for a far-flung international conflict, these books personalized the soldier thereby keeping alive the American ideal of the heroic individual, full of "can-do" spirit, committed to democracy, ready to sacrifice his life for a return to an American way of an American way of life. Romanticizing the individual, they reinforced deep-seated national myths.

Abstract:
Ausgehend von den primärsensorischen Arealen verlaufen Verarbeitungswege nach anterior durch die Temporallappen, die der Objekterkennung dienen. Besonders die vorderste Spitze der Temporallappen, der anteriore Temporalkortex, wird mit Funktionen der Objektidentifizierung assoziiert. Es existieren jedoch mehrere Vermutungen, welcher Art die Objekte sind, die in dieser Region verarbeitet werden. Es gibt Annahmen über die Verarbeitung von Sprache, von menschlichen Stimmen, semantischen Informationen oder individuellen Konzepten. Um zwischen diesen Theorien zu differenzieren, wurden vier ereigniskorrelierte fMRT-Messungen an jungen gesunden Erwachsenen durchgeführt. Die Probanden hörten in drei Experimenten die Stimmen berühmter und unbekannter Personen und in einem der Experimente zusätzlich Geräusche von Tieren und Musikinstrumenten. Im vierten Experiment wurden Zeichnungen von Comicfiguren gezeigt sowie von Tieren und Obst- und Gemüsesorten. Die neuronale Aktivität bei der Verarbeitung dieser Reize im Vergleich zu Zeiten ohne Stimulation wurde mit Hilfe von Interesseregionen untersucht, die nahezu die gesamten Temporallappen abdeckten und diese in jeweils zwölf Areale untergliederten. In den anterioren Temporallappen waren sowohl mit auditiven als auch mit visuellen Stimuli deutliche Aktivierungsunterschiede in Abhängigkeit von der semantischen Kategorie festzustellen. Individuelle Konzepte (menschliche Stimmen und Zeichentrickfiguren) riefen eine signifikant stärkere Aktivierung hervor als kategoriale Konzepte (Tiere, Musikinstrumente, Obst- und Gemüse). Außerdem war das Signal, dass durch die Stimmen der bekannten Personen ausgelöst wurde, deutlich stärker als das Signal der unbekannten Stimmen. Damit sind die Daten am ehesten kompatibel mit der Annahme, dass die anterioren Temporallappen, bekannte individuelle Konzepte verarbeiten. Da die beschriebenen Signalunterschiede zwischen den verschiedenen Bedingungen ausgehend von den transversalen Temporalgyri nach anterior zum Temporalpol zunahmen, unterstützen die Ergebnisse zudem die Theorie von einem ventralen Verarbeitungsweg, der die Temporallappen nach anterior durchquert und zur Objekterkennung beiträgt. In Übereinstimmung mit den Annahmen der Konvergenzzonentheorie von A. R. Damasio scheint die spezifische Funktion dieses rostral gerichteten Verarbeitungsweges aus der sukzessiven Kombination immer mehr sensomotorischer Merkmale von Objekten zu bestehen. Da bekannte individuelle Konzepte eine besonders hohe Anzahl von Merkmalen aufweisen, ist eine weiter nach anterior verlaufende Verarbeitung zu beobachten als bei unbekannten oder kategorialen Konzepten.<br>It is assumed that neural pathways run from the primary sensory cortices through the temporal lobes towards their poles crossing areas necessary for object recognition. Especially the most anterior temporal parts were associated with processes contributing to the identification of objects. Yet, there is little agreement on the kinds of objects that are interpreted by the anterior temporal lobes. For example, there are assumptions regarding linguistic processing, voice recognition, the processing of general semantic information or the identification of unique entities. In order to differentiate between those theories, four event-related fMRI experiments were performed in healthy young adults. In three experiments, the subjects heard the voices of famous and unknown persons. In addition, characteristic sounds of animals and musical instruments were presented in one of these experiments. During the fourth experiment, drawings of famous cartoon characters were shown together with animals and fruit & vegetables. The neural activity in response to these stimuli compared to rest was analyzed using a regions-of-interest approach. 12 regions-of-interest that covered the majority of the temporal lobes were defined in each hemisphere. Both with auditory and visual stimuli, there were clear activation differences between the semantic categories in the anterior temporal lobes. Unique entities (human voices and cartoon characters) evoked a significantly stronger signal than categorical concepts (animals, musical instruments, fruit & vegetables). Furthermore, the signal in response to voices of familiar persons was significantly higher than to unfamiliar voices. Thus, the results are most compatible with the assumption that the anterior temporal lobes process supramodal features of familiar unique entities. As the before-mentioned signal differences between unique and categorical concepts and between familiar and unfamiliar voices increased from the transversal temporal gyri towards the temporal poles, the results support the notion of a ventral processing pathway running rostrally through the temporal lobes. In accordance with the convergence zone theory described by A.R. Damasio, the precise function of that pathway seems to consist in the incremental combination of sensorimotor concept features. Since familiar unique entities possess an especially high number of features, their processing was found to be directed into more anterior portions of the temporal lobe than the perception of unfamiliar or categorical concepts.

碩士<br>國立臺灣科技大學<br>資訊工程系<br>99<br>In this thesis, we try to solve the problems encountered when applying the PCA (principle component analysis) and ANN (artificial neural network) based timbre-conversion method under the situation that only a small and non-parallel corpus is available. Then, this method is adopted to construct a Mandarin speech synthesis system to synthesize speech with a famous person&apos;s timbre. We design special classification methods for syllable initial and final, respectively, to decrease the number of categories. For the syllable signals of a category, an HMM of a state-sharing structure is trained in order to obtain a fixed number of DCC (discrete cepstral coefficient) vectors for each syllable signal. This state-sharing structure of HMM is intended to improve the left-to-right HMM structure. An ANN is adopted to map the PCA coefficients of a source syllable into the PCA coefficients of a target syllable. For training this ANN, we propose a method to classify a context under which a syllable is pronounced. This method combines precise classification and rough classification. In terms of the result of context classification, we can find some source syllables that are most similarly in context for a target syllable. For each category of syllable initial and final, a separate ANN for mapping PCA coefficients is trained after the DCC vectors are analyzed with PCA. In the synthesis stage, we integrate the function of PCA and ANN based timbre-conversion into the Mandarin speech synthesis system developed previously by others. By using this system, some speech signals are synthesized with timbre converted, and used to conduct listening tests. The results of the tests show that the timbre of the synthesized speech is a little similar to that of a target famous person. However, the signal quality and the characteristic of prosody need to be improved in the future.

This diploma thesis covers the individual citizens' perception of suburban events in order to discuss the point of view of the early modern Czech citizen and their ability to gain information of the world around through the analysis of such suburban events that were registered in the chosen chronicles, originating between the years 1575-1600, a period that is considered "a golden age of the Czech cities". First, the background of the chroniclers is outlined, because it might have influenced the choice of events they decided to include in their works, i.e. the position of the concrete city, the level of education in the said period or the author's personal life. Second, the general knowledge of the authors is described in the thesis through the means of analysis of the type of recorded information (e.g. Turkish wars, the deaths of famous persons, wildfires, councils and the like). In other words, the thesis is to point out what type of information was considered to be the most interesting or extraordinary to the wider public, and which circles were usually covered by the chroniclers. Abstract:
The writing of county history in England experienced its first boom from the 1570s to the 1650s, during which time a series of outstanding county histories were written, including William Lambarde’s Perambulation of Kent, William Burton’s Description of Leicestershire and William Dugdale’s Antiquities of Warwickshire. All these works are manifestations of the phenomenon of ‘county history writing by the gentry’. County histories are primarily about local place names and famous persons, but also give accounts related to rivers, mountains, land, architecture, real estate, family clans, regional customs and histories. Abstract According to late medieval contemplatives, “we” human beings are also persons—a category that includes all rational beings, including God. By the outset of the thirteenth century, the term ‘persona’ had a long history in logical, legal, and theological contexts. This chapter addresses how the overlapping but distinct connotations ‘persona’ assumes in those contexts boil down to three central concepts: individuality, dignity, and rationality (understood broadly to include the full range of rational capacities). These three concepts combine in the contemplative tradition with the use of first- and second-person perspectives, personification, and introspection to yield a complex and rich understanding of who we are and what it is to be a person. The chapter concludes with a discussion of how this concept of person also prefigures Locke’s famous seventeenth-century definition and influences the development of the philosophical theory of personalism.

The dynamics of this development started in the 1960s when, for the first time the classical organ in its jazz format was invented in America and then in Europe. Today. building electronic (digital) organs from transistor and lamps with sound generators organs to digital organ has become widely spread. Digital organs have reached extraordinary professional performances in which the sound diversity and natural sounds are copied and rendered with great fidelity. Famous makes from Europe and America have started to develop independent intonation and sound application systems. All these aspects as well as the practical applications in which acoustic research could be involved by applying digital systems that exist in Romanian research to organ music are likely to open new horizons for the application of research (and learning) to the field of electro-sound that could be naturally followed by the introduction of eLearning systems in musical education. Starting from this development principles in digital systems of classical organs, there are multiple learning variants through eLearning system.This is very effective, especcialy for disabled persons. The learning system can be eassily addapted to different methods, for example the situation in wich the teacher is fallowing from distance the student, or the situation of direct hearing memorization. All this things are possible because of the digital organ's abbilities to reproduce very easily musical scores, that can be memorised by persons with visual disabilities. Another interactiv system can be developed by using the research on sound, till the dimension in wich it resemples most with natural sound. Here interfeers the acoustic research. It is well known that visual disabled persons have superior hearing abbilities. They can distinguish different sonorities and qualities of the sounds. A basic research in this domain with qualified personnel and researchers speccialized in vizual dissabled persons is possible and can be applied in Romania.

“Lemezat-i Hülviyye ez-Lemeat-i Ülviyye”, which was completed in 1621, was written by Mahmud Jamaladdin al-Hulvi (1574-1654), one of the well-know scholars of tasavvuf (sufism) and poets, who lived in the Ottoman Empire in the first half of the XVII century. This work consists of three parts: preface (mukaddima), 23 parts called lemza and a conclusion (hatime). It gives information about the first caliphs of Islamic state, scholars of religious sect (mazhab), twelve imams of Ahl al-Bayt, Khalvatiyya sect of Sufism and sheikhs that founded its branches and their followers, and well-known sheikhs of that period with whom author personally met and had conversation. In total, the work covers information about 193 persons, including author himself. As a series, after Safavism, it is possible to get information about Sheikh Ibrahim Zahid-i Gilani, who was considered "a mürşid-i pir (teacher)" of famous personalities of Khalvatism and his main four followers (Sheikh Safi, Sheikh Akhi Yusif, Sheikh Pir Hikmat and Sheikh Akhi Mahammad). Данный эпиграфический памятник связан с обеспечением регулярного поступления фороса союзных полисов в Афины. По духу своему он очень близок знаменитому Монетному декрету. Имя предложившего его политика, Клиний, является наиболее сильным аргументом для датировки декрета 448/47 г. до н. э. Он был отождествлен с погибшим в битве при Коронее в 447 г. до н. э. отцом Алкивиада, что и привело к установлению традиционной даты декрета. Однако не может быть абсолютной уверенности, что автор декрета – отец прославленного Алкивиада. Анализ данных источников показывает, что остальные представители знаменитой семьи из дема Скамбониды, носившие это имя, действительно не подходят по возрасту и не могут претендовать на роль инициатора декрета Клиния во второй половине V в. до н. э. Тем не менее косвенные данные источников демонстрируют, что среди высших слоев афинского общества могут быть обнаружены еще две семьи, в которых также было употребительно это не самое распространенное имя. Попытки установить возраст упоминаемых в источниках лиц с именем Клиний позволяют утверждать, что время их жизни вполне согласуется с периодом от начала 430-х до середины 420-х гг. до н. э., т. е. периодом, на который указывают эпиграфические характеристики надписи. The Decree of Kleinias (IG I3 34) is one of the landmark testimonies of the Athenian increasing control in relation to their allies in the Delian League. This epigraphic document deals with ensuring the regular tribute supply of allied cities to Athens. In spirit, it is very close to the famous Coinage Decree. The name of the politician who proposed it, Kleinias, is the strongest argument for dating the decree 448/47 BC. He was identified with the father of Alcibiades, who died at the Battle of Coronea in 447 BC, which led to the establishment of the traditional date of the decree. Yet there can be no absolute certainty that the author of the decree is the father of the famous Alcibiades. The analysis of our data shows that the rest of the representatives of the famous family from the Scambonides deme, who bore this name, are indeed not suitable because of their age and cannot apply for the role of the initiator of the decree of Kleinias in the second half of the 5th century BC. However, indirect evidence shows that two more families can be found among the upper strata of Athenian society, in which this not the most common name was also used. Attempts to establish the age of persons mentioned with the name of Kleinias allow to assert that the time of their life is consistent with the period from the beginning of the 430s to the middle of the 420s. BC, i. e. the period indicated by the epigraphic characteristics of the inscription. Attributing the initiatives described in the decree of Kleinias to the complex of measures of «periclean imperialism» of the 440s BC should be questioned.

Lindemann raises the themes of love, creativity, life and death. Feelings in T. Lindmann are usually presented from the perspective of a lyrical hero, have the character of confession and are filled with tragedy.

The main objective of the study is to reveal the functional parameters of anthroponyms in the media texts. Methods of investigation: the method of media texts monitoring, the comparative method; the method of contextual analysis, the methods of functional analysis. Results. Anthroponyms in media texts contribute to the exact reproduction of facts, the display of a certain time-space. The use of an anthroponym in the media gives its bearer greater social significance; silencing an anthroponym demonstrates a desire to remove its bearer from the public agenda. Anthroponyms can reflect person’s social connections, inform about a belonging to a certain national, ethnic, age, social group. Conclusions Anthroponyms give media text more credibility, because they inform about a specific person in specific realities, personalize information. Anthroponyms are capable to mark time-space, therefore the actualization of proper names can be a means of transferring to another time, informing about forgotten historical facts and persons. Given the ability of anthroponyms – the names of famous persons – to be reduced, the journalist should take into account the possible difficulties of identifying such a person in a different time-space or under the condition of insufficient recognition. Entering the language game, anthroponyms are actualizing simultaneously meanings associated with different time-spaces, such ability can be effectively used to draw historical or cultural parallels, create an expressive load. Given the ability of anthroponyms to increase or decrease social status, journalists should be responsible in the selection of proper names as part of the factual material of the media text. Marking through anthroponyms the connection with national, social, age groups makes these words unique identifiers of the division into “own” or “strangers”, demonstrates the attitude of the speaker towards the bearer of his own name. Significance. The revealed functional parameters of anthroponyms as part of the actual material of the media text provide journalists with ample opportunities for the implementation of various communicative tasks. Abstract:
The article analyses the peculiarities of the coverage of the covid pandemic in the Ukrainian media, the emphasis placed by the media in news, and how the online mode of modern life and social distancing affects the growth of media influence. Special attention is paid to the view of the famous publicist Heorhii Pocheptsov, who does not exclude the possibility that the coronavirus was invented intentionally to control millions of people around the world. Permanently, the world faces numerous challenges of different scales: economic, military, socio-political, environmental, epidemiological ones. In 2020, the largest and the most unexpected event, undoubtedly, was the deadly coronavirus pandemic, which spread from the small Chinese province of Wuhan to the whole world and already took more than one million people’s lives in less than a year. Thus, the media, that in the post-information society actually have an unprecedented impact on people, form a person’s perception of such challenges. As a result, our understanding of the pandemic is directly related to the information we consume from the media. In fact, from the very start of quarantine, the media space began to be captured by analytical materials in which experts from various fields tried to predict what the world would be like after the end of coronavirus. These experts were of two types: some claimed that irreversible changes would deepen the permanent economic and socio-political crisis, and by claiming that they intensified panic, while others argued that any crisis is a chance to restart and grow. The experts put different emphases covering the covid pandemic in the media, but it is important to pay attention to the analysis of the famous publicist, propaganda researcher – Heorhii Pocheptsov, who sees the coronavirus as a tool to influence millions of people. The pandemic will end sooner or later, but no matter whether the virus was artificially invented or not, the processes that have already been launched around the world cannot stop as if nothing had happened. But Heorhii Pocheptsov’s opinion about the possible artificial nature of the virus should make us more vigilant while consuming information from TVs or from the online media, as it is possible that this information might be a part of a great game that we were not warned about.
