Building on recent findings in the field of fan fiction studies, I claim that Pamela Aidan’s Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman is indirectly influenced by three cultural phenomena which centre around Jane Austen and her work. Aidan’s fan fiction text stays close to the spirit of Austen’s Pride and Prejudice because she “reimagines” the novel according to the interpretive conventions of the Republic of Pemberley, a fan community. These conventions demand respect for Austen and her novels because they are shaped by the broader, cultural conventions of Janeitism and Austen criticism. Similarly, Aidan’

Abstract Past studies have shown that expert interpreters were better than novices at using contextual cues to anticipate upcoming information. However, whether such sensitivity to contextual cues can be traced by means of neural signatures is relatively unexplored. The present study used event-related brain potentials (ERPs) along with a language-switching paradigm – including non-switched (Chinese–Chinese, L1–L1) and switched (Chinese–English, L1–L2) conditions – to investigate whether interpreters with many years of experience, interpreters with a few years of experience and post-graduate-l

The article highlights typological features of the English fanfiction. The work offers a brief outline of history, main forms and modern trends in fan fiction studies as a genre of web literature. The relevance of the study of fan fiction is due, above all, to the fact that these works are a bright example of the so called live language. They reflect all modern language trends, express the musical, literary and film preferences of the society. In addition, fan fiction is an understudied phenomenon that has existed in various forms, but has received the greatest impetus in development only in r

Wopke de Jong (1799-1852) began his poetic career by writing poems in Dutch. In time, he joined the emerging Frisian literature of his time. As well as continuing to write highly rhetorical Dutch and Frisian poetry, he eventually turned to writing popular entertainment in Frisian. His rhetoric was based on a deep knowledge of the Bible and the classics. De Jong’s new orientation shows the strong position of the Frisian language at that time. Wopke Eekhoff had helped him along the way in 1832, and around 1845 de Jong took advantage of the rapidly growing opportunities for publishing in Frisian.

Abstract. This study explores the application of Interaction Ritual Chains (IRC) theory and computational techniques to analyze and enhance fandom engagement within the Chinese Australian community. By integrating sentiment analysis, social network analysis, and gender-based language analysis, this research provides a comprehensive understanding of how emotional energy, shared focus, and bodily synchronization contribute to fan interactions. We employ a predictive mathematical model to quantify these IRC components and their impact on engagement, leveraging data mining, natural language proces

AbstractThis article explores how fans of K-pop, a mediatized musical genre from South Korea, negotiated the tugs of competing language norms within the transnational context of YouTube. The analysis focuses on interactions that emerged over thirty-three months and across eleven ‘reaction videos’ posted by two English-speaking fans. I analyze the semiotic process by which these two speakers’ utterances of Korean names came to be heard as hybrid by their viewers, how viewers invoked various ideological frames when evaluating these hybridities, and how local language practices and interpretation

Abstract:
Fan fiction is the work written by fans who produce their own literature (and not only) based on popular original works. Their activity is concentrated primarily online, which allows them to connect and facilitate the exchange of opinions. The works appearing on internet forums give rise to discussions, inspire the creation of new works set in the original universes as well as the translations that accompany them. Like all fan art, the translations are done by non-professionals, often very young people. The translation of works often belonging to the fantasy genre poses specific difficulties.
