Abstract:
Fan fiction, the most popular creative outlet for fans, allows the amateur writer an opportunity to be published and receive immediate feedback from peers. As educators, we can learn from the fan communities as they participate in online activities, especially fan fiction. Students are more likely to embrace entertaining and creative assignments. And since much of the world is linked to the Internet in one way or another, we can allow students an opportunity to not only improve their writing skills, but also enhance their knowledge of the Internet and its capabilities. My study included online interviews with fan fiction writers and readers as well as the examination of fan fiction texts and websites. By exploring this relatively unknown genre of writing and reading, I believe teachers of composition can use fan fiction to their advantage by encouraging students to write creatively using subject matter that interests them in some way.

Abstract:
Soaps operas, or daytime serials, have long been a staple of American culture. In April 2011, ABC-Disney announced the cancellation of All My Children and One Life to Live. Cancellations propelled the fans of these programs to launch efforts to save not only the shows, but the genre. Through the use of social media, websites, and traditional off-line activities that included calling and letter-writing, fans strived to make their voices heard. The study examines the creation of an online community and discourse through a textual-analysis case study of blogs on two fan activist websites. Dahlberg?s criteria for presence in an online public space and Habermas? public sphere allows for the presentation of ideas within a group to encourage a sense of democracy in a grassroots effort to be heard against corporate interests. The case study will examine a fan website, Sudz.Tv, as a group organized in a virtual public space.

The question about where the money goes is something really interesting for all the companies in the Internet ecosystem. While there is a huge interest, no clear answers have been provided, partially because the ecosystem keeps changing. This thesis aims to answer this question by looking at how consumers spend their money in the different parts and services associated to the Internet. Besides looking at the money that consumers spend, this research also looks at the money that is in the ecosystem in things such as online advertising, which has been seen as one of the sources of revenues for many companies. Three countries have been evaluated in this thesis, to show the situation in different parts of the world. US, UK and Spain have been the chosen countries and the comparison of the results gives a very good idea of the situation in Europe and US. A quantitative analysis has been done including six main categories: wireless, wireline voice, wireline video, wireline broadband access, ecommerce and online advertising. The results show big differences in expenditures among three different countries and analyze the potential reasons. Finally, the research also aims to identify new business opportunities for telecomm operators associated to the different categories identified in the quantitative analysis. Given the current status of the Internet ecosystem, most of the business opportunities imply the creation of partnerships with Internet companies, so these recommendations could be also applicable to Internet companies.

This study presents a subgenre of fan fiction, a genre of fictional stories written by fans – hence the name derived from words in English, fan and fiction – as volunteers, created upon other existing works of fiction which are, in their majority, produced by the so called mass entertainment industry. They are posted, disseminated and appreciated through the Internet. The subgenre here approached is called slash and includes stories where the protagonists involved in an erotic/romantic plot are necessarily from the same gender – usually male – although the authors are females. The audience for which these fictions are written is also feminine and around the practice is assembled a large number of women both in Brazil and abroad. What a slash fan fiction based on the original Harry Potter series, written by British author JK Rowling, is; its presence in the Portuguese language; where to find it; what its characteristics are; what kind of art it inspires; and the reasons for involvement with such writing, are the questions addressed in the research here presented. It is also analyzed the theory that search to explain the slash authors and readers‟ motivations to such involvement having the Evolutionist Theory as its basis, establishing an approximation between this sub genre and mainstream romances, supposedly the main female erotica. A short study observing the presence of slash elements in one of the mainstream romances is also presented.

Abstract:

Ofta flyter de in i varandra.

Abstract:

Abstract:
I explore the effectiveness of fan campaigns to save television shows through the lens of audience participation and fandom studies. Beginning with a background of active audience reception theory and the evolution of fan studies, I identify what elements are necessary for a successful fan campaign. The most important factors of a successful campaign are numbers and adherence to the television economy. Using case studies, I trace the development of fan campaigns from the 1960s to the present and analyze the effectiveness of various tactics used. I also explore how the Internet, particularly social media, has changed both the perception of fans and the effectiveness of fan campaigns.

Thesis, Paris, ENST, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013ENST0059/document.

Full text
Abstract:
This study deals with the reception of fictional works, when it materializes as “derivative works”, i.e. products made by active audiences, and seek the social factors explaining the shape took by these creations in a given context. If a lot of user generated contents now on the Internet –thanks to the digitalization of culture and the spread of ICT– shows that media products are more and more appropriated by amateurs, the specificity of these cultural practices and their continuity with older types of fictional involvements must be assessed: it will be exemplified through the case of fanfictions, also on a growing trend since the 2000s on the Web, that is texts, written by fans, which finish off, extend or correct original fictional works. Mixing cultural and media sociology with literary history, this dissertation suggests that fanfictions rest upon basic mechanisms linked to the reception and the circulation of fictional worlds, but always constrained by social, economic, media and legal factors. Based on the study of a thousand of fanfictions, observations from one of their main archives, and comparisons with literary successes which also generated derivatives texts, this research first discusses fanfictions’ past, extending it further than the 1960s when they were published in fanzines, but distinguishing it from the whole literature’s past. The inquiry then reveals how fanfictions are still the result of a collective production and organization, in which the broadcasting medium, the interactions between fans and with creative industries construct their format and content

Aruleba, Samuel Olasehinde. "The internet as a retail marketing communication channel for identifying market opportunities for UK grocery retailers." Thesis, London South Bank University, 2009. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.618683.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the suitability and the potential of the Internet as a retail marketing communication channel for the UK-based grocery retailers. Grocery retail chains have grown in relative importance since they become commonplace in the UK. This study examines three related aspects of marketing via the Internet including: the Internet as a retail marketing tool; the Internet as a retail marketing communication medium; and the Internet as a retail marketing distribution channel. These three examined aspects in the study are significantly important in successful marketing via the Internet. The purpose of the study is to examine the nature of UK grocery retailing on the Internet. The primary aims are to develop an understanding of how the Internet is used by the UK grocery retailers to interact with consumers and to explore the extent of its adoption within the UK grocery retail sector. The main objectives are: (i) to assess the general extent of the Internet adoption by the UK grocery retailers in order to understand whether the type of grocery retail marketing activities undertaken influences this. (ii) to investigate whether the extent of the Internet adoption by the UK grocery retailers is dependent upon the size of retail operation, in terms of the number of total retail outlets. Therefore, the study developed from the previous works in this area focuses on the achievement of the main objectives. Since the examination of existing literature shows that previous works do not assess the effectiveness of the Internet as a retail marketing communication channel for grocery retail marketing; and from the perspective of consumer, this study fills these gaps by using the Internet to identify market opportunities for grocery retailers. In order to collect the data, the Corporate Intelligence on Retailing was used as the source of data, because it included all of the large retail organisations as well as those with a significant on-line presence. Those websites of the UK's leading retail organisations were identified. The UK's grocery retail organisations selected were based on the presence of a registered URL; website activity validation, and website review procedure. This method ensured that the collection of data was conducted in a rigorous and consistent manner. Both the fundamental principles that govern the Internet and the retail marketing communication dyad have been evaluated. The findings highlight the difficulty of acquiring a sustainable competitive advantage via the Internet resulting from the necessity for grocery retail-specific structures, the derived nature of consumer demand for grocery, security concerns, the presence of structural impediments in shopping via the Internet, and the transaction-versus-process-based use of the Internet in grocery retailing. The major contribution of this study therefore is the identification of structural changes to the UK grocery retail market, which consequently harmonises all the grocery retailers and those factors underpinning the adoption of the Internet by the UK's leading grocery retailers that help to strengthen their competitiveness and allow sustainability in the grocery retail market.

Abstract:

This dissertation focuses on the everyday life information practices of teens in the Nerdfighter online fan community known as Nerdfighteria. Nerdfighteria is the community of fans of vloggers John and Hank Green. This study examines aspects of everyday life information seeking (ELIS) by 1) focusing on an understudied demographic, teens between the ages of 13 to 17; 2) focusing on a fan community, Nerdfighteria, which has many members, but has been rarely studied in the academic literature; and 3) investigating everyday life information practices using a single community that utilizes multiple online platforms (i.e., Facebook, Twitter, Discord, and YouTube), rather than centering on a single platform.

This dissertation is a case study incorporating a survey of 241 teens and semi-structured interviews with 15 teens about their experiences in Nerdfighteria, followed by a month-long diary activities. The study also included observations of public communities and review of documents related to the Nerdfighter community. Data analysis was iterative and incorporated grounded theory techniques.

This study finds that teen Nerdfighters use their fan community to engage in a wide variety of everyday life information seeking around topics that are related to their personal development. Social, cognitive, emotional, and fan topics were predominant. Teen Nerdfighters engaged across platforms and were likely to switch platforms to find the optimal technical affordances while staying in Nerdfighteria. The teens viewed these changes as staying within the community rather than changing from one platform to another—illustrating the primacy of the community to the teens in meeting their information needs. Teens were drawn to Nerdfighteria because they believed it to be a unique place on the Internet, which valued intellectualism, positivity, and kindness. In many cases, teens preferred to observe other’s interactions in order to gain the information they needed or wanted, and waited to engage via posting or responding when certain criteria were met. These findings describe the complicated interplay of the ELIS topics sought, the preferred practices for meeting an information need, and the reasons for choosing one community over another.

Abstract:
Connecting factories to the internet and enable the possibilities for these to autonomously talk to each other is called the Industrial Internet of Things(IIoT) and is mentioned as Industry 4.0 in the terms of the industrial revolutions. The machines are collecting data through very many different sensors and need to share these values with each other and the cloud. This will make a large load to the cloud and the internet, and the latency will be large. To evaluate how the workload and the latency can be reduced and still get the same result as using the cloud, two different systems are implemented. One which uses cloud and one which using edge computing. Edge computing is when the processing of the data is decentralized to the edge of the network. This thesis aims to find out ”When is it more favorable to use an edge solution and when is it to prefer a cloud solution”. The first system is implemented with an edge platform, Crosser, the second system is implemented with a cloud platform, Azure. Both implementations are giving the same outputs but the differences is where the data is processed. The systems are measured in latency, bandwidth, and CPU usage. The result of the measurements shows that the Crosser system has less latency, using smaller bandwidth but is needing more computational power of the device which is on the edge of the network. The conclusion of the results is that it depends on the demands of the system. Is the demands that it should have low latency and not using much bandwidth Crosser is to prefer. But if a very heavy machine learning algorithm is going to be executed in the system and the latency and bandwidth size is not a problem then the Cloud Reference System is to prefer.

Abstract:
The aim of this Master’s Thesis is to study readers and authors of Harry Potter fan fiction, in order to answer the question of why they read and write fan fiction about Harry Potter, and which factors determine what kind of fan fiction stories they read. The empirical material consists of three qualitative interviews with fan fiction readers and authors, and a textual analysis of four internet forums for discussions about Harry Potter and fan fiction. The theoretical background is based on reception theory and reader-response criticism. The results show, that commitment to, and interest in, the source material is an important reason as to why the participants of the study read and write Harry Potter fan fiction. At the same time, most participants also feel frustration and dissatisfaction with the source material. Also, the results show that fan fiction can be a way of practising writing skills. Reading and writing fan fiction also attracts because it is fun, and because it gives an opportunity to explore how other Harry Potter fans have interpreted the source material. There are many factors that determine which stories the participants choose to read. Characters, and how they are paired with each other, play a vital role, as well as genre, rating, plot and the author’s language and writing style. Many participants read popular stories, and have favourite authors. Personal interpretation of the source material is a very important factor, since it will determine what a participant likes and is willing to accept in fan fiction.

Abstract:
The advent of social media has witnessed a transformation in how audiences interact with marketers online. While previous research has shown that media consumers generally hold a negative view of advertising, today’s media consumers are engaging with brands more than ever. This study examines what it means to be an active fan of marketers in social media to the modern media consumer through an investigation of how audiences relate to brands in the social media space. Centered around audiences’ uses and gratifications of three successful brand communities within Facebook through qualitative (field observations and individual interviews) and quantitative (surveys) methods, this study intends to gain further knowledge about the role of social media and its impact on forming new cultural trends. The findings suggest that while the uses and gratifications of Facebook brand pages and what becoming a fan of a brand on Facebook signifies to social media users vary, the prevailing motivation for and function of brand community membership is the construction of one’s digital identity in association with the brands of one’s choosing. Furthermore, despite being aware that Facebook brand communities are marketing platforms, fans were largely receptive to and held a positive attitude towards the brands. This critical study of brand fans on Facebook presents the importance of studying social media’s uses and implications in order to better understand new audience cultures within the interactive media landscape.

Abstract:
This dissertation traces the circulation and consumption of Japanese anime, or Anime, in Kuwait to examine the changing consciousness of normativity regarding gender and sexuality for audiences and fans. Anime has been distributed and accessible since the 1970s in Kuwait. Nonetheless, with the advent of "New Anime" after the 2000s, the audience has widely accepted characters and protagonists that deviate from the existing representational practices portraying active men and passive women. Drawing from gender and sexualities studies, media and anime studies, Antonio Gramsci's theory of hegemony as well as Raewyn Connell's theory on masculinities, this study critically investigates "hegemonic masculinities" in Kuwaiti society to argue the ways in which the reception and practices of Anime help to erode them.

This dissertation studies the translation process of fanfiction (fiction written by fans), one of the many activities practiced by fans in virtual communities. The study is based on a corpus of English texts that have been translated online into Portuguese. The study shows that, on the one hand, the translation process bears similarities to traditional translation practices and strategies while, on the other hand, the actors move flexibly between the different roles, adapting themselves easily to the various possibilities that a virtual environment offers. Characteristic of fanfiction in translation is that it is a dual process of 'rewriting': on the one hand, the creation by fans (readers / writers) of new stories based on existing characters and plots, and on the other hand, the translation itself, which can be described as a process of "rewriting". According to the definition of Lefevere (1995), all translation is a form of rewriting of an 'original', a process related to power relations embedded in a particular social context. After introducing the concept of translation as ‘rewriting’, the specific aspects of the translation of fanfiction as a process of 'rewriting' are analyzed, such as the temporal aspect (the ‘pace’ of translation) and the relationship between author / reader of fanfiction and his / her translator (s). The analysis makes clear that in the digital age, the relationship between entities such as author, reader and translator has become extremely complex and that these entities can no longer be considered or observed as fixed and distinct realities. The roles and functions that are observed are interchangeable and this plasticity is accentuated by the use of technology (machines), which transforms the actors into 'cyborgs', able to simultaneously assume the role of author, reader and translator. Traditional dichotomies such as ‘writer’ versus ‘reader’, ‘reader’ versus ‘translator’, or ‘translator’ versus ‘reviewer’ have changed substantially in cyberspace. The cyborg-translator is both part of the real world and the parallel world of the Internet; from behind of his / her machine he/she participates in various fields, assumes distinct roles and interacts with readers and writers. The generalized access to the Internet raises questions regarding the future of the practice of writing, reading and translating. Is it possible that the boundaries between writer, reader and translator will be erased in the digital age and that the different roles can be adopted simultaneously by the different actors? From the perspective of the humanities, the digital era requires us to reconsider traditional categories of division of labor separated from each other by sharp boundaries. The rise of the internet has created new genres and makes participation in the cyberspace possible to what was once limited to only part of the population. In Liquid Modernity (2001), Bauman states that patterns of human interaction and dependency, as compared to previous generations, have become malleable in an unimaginable way, but also that their shape - just like all liquids - does not remain stable. By analogy with this observation, we can say that some traditional dichotomies that once helped us to understand and analyze our society, are evaporating or beginning to merge one into another. Bauman’s metaphor can be applied to the study of literature and translation in the digital age, characterized by actors moving in different directions. By analogy with the notion of fluidity, this thesis based on a corpus of translations of fanfiction studies the changed roles of reader, author, and translator in the digital age and its significance for the traditional dichotomies of literature and translation studies.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the potential for radio on the Internet to enhance processes of communication and media practice in the form of new a public sphere. Drawing on the work of Marshall McLuhan, the early stages of this thesis present an enquiry into the unique positive qualities of both radio and the Internet. The argument that follows contends that radio presented on the Internet can draw from the perceived technological benefits of each individual medium, combining as a potential site for public spheres. Both Habermas’s liberal public sphere and contemporary critiques of the concept are examined to define a range of principles that could be tested against relevant examples. The increasing commercialisation of the Internet is presented as a challenge to the normative ideals of a public sphere and counter-balances the optimism of a technologically determinist approach. A series of thematic codes are developed from the relevant theory and combined with qualitative interviews. This forms the framework for a thematic analysis of three individual case studies: Unwelcome Guests, an anti-corporate radio programme, SW Radio Africa, “the independent voice of Zimbabwe,” and NH Making Waves, the radio arm of a community peace activist group. The study investigates opportunities for these three individual case studies to act as public spheres, by examining the interplay that occurs between both Internet and radio practices. As the thematic analysis will demonstrate, placing radio content on the Internet presents new opportunities to diversify content and audiences through collaborative production and improved distribution. Recommendations for further research emphasise the need to pursue the Internet’s role in the public sphere potential of radio.

Abstract:
Information Technology (IT) enables organizations to involve consumers as co-creators of new products. By facilitating increased interaction between consumers and developers. IT allows consumers to influence and tailor product designs, but also allows developers to make use of distant knowledge to enhance and extend their product offerings and marketing. However, while much is said about the promises of IT-enabled co-creation, little is known of the strategic challenges associated with such IT use. To address this gap, we drew on IT literature to conduct a qualitative case study of IT-enabled co-creation in four video game development firms. In particular, we tried to understand how IT is affecting relationships between consumers and developers and when and why IT can be strategically used to enable co-creating coalitions in development processes. In so doing, it became clear that the promises of IT-enabled co-creation are associated with key strategic challenges. In particular, we identify three challenges that organizations must address in order to harness the strategic value of IT-enabled co-creation: the silent majority, quality assurance and managing expectations. We conclude this paper by discussing the future of IT and digital product development as well as implications for research and practice.

Abstract:

In 2000, President Bill Clinton enacted the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) which requires all K-12 schools and publicly funded libraries to use Internet filters to protect children from pornography and other obscene or potentially harmful online content as a stipulation for receiving E-Rate funding. The varying interpretations of CIPA and E-Rate guidelines may impact the learning opportunities of secondary students.

The purpose of this study was to examine the interpretations of federal policy (CIPA), state policy (La. Rev. Stat. Ann. §17:100.7), and district policy on E-Rate funding as related to Internet filtering and secondary student learning opportunities in Region III school districts in Louisiana. The works of Heins (2001, 2003, 2006), Cho (2001, 2003, 2006), Feldman (2006), and Willard (2000, 2003), leading researchers in the fields of Internet safety and Internet filtering, were reviewed so that the issues surrounding Internet filtering and opportunities for student learning could be better understood.

Using a mixed methods research approach, the researcher explored state interpretations of theChildren's Internet Protection Act through examining Louisiana's PreK-12 Educational Technology Standards. Through interviews and administration of the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) survey on Internet filtering, district interpretations were solicited. Following survey administration, the researcher led two focus groups to solicit perceptions of district technology personnel and secondary teachers on the impact of Internet filtering on student learning opportunities at the secondary level. Follow-up interviews were also conducted to garner further information on policy interpretations and perceptions. Findings from this study shall serve as a resource for participating districts to ensure maximum opportunities for all students to learn in the 21st century.

Abstract:
Thesis ( M. Tech. (Business Administration )) - Central University of Technology, Free State, 2014
Fast and secure public service delivery is not only a necessity, but a compulsory endeavour. However, it is close to impossible to achieve such objectives without the use of Information Technology (IT). It is correspondingly important to find proper sustainability frameworks of technology. Organisations do not only need technology for efficient public service; the constant upgrading of systems and cautious migration to the newest IT developments is also equally indispensable in today’s dynamic technological world. Conversely, countries in Africa are always lagging behind in technological progresses. Such deficiencies have been identified in the passport processing of Lesotho and South Africa, where to unequal extents, problems related to systems of passport production have contributed to delays and have become fertile grounds for corrupt practices. The study seeks to identify the main impediments in the adoption of Management Information Systems (MIS) for passport processing. Furthermore, the study explores the impact MIS might have in attempting to combat long queues and to avoid long waiting periods – from application to issuance of passports to citizens. The reasonable time frame between passport application and issuance, and specific passport management systems, have been extensively discussed along with various strategies that have been adopted by some of the world’s first movers in modern passport management technologies. In all cases and stages of this research, Lesotho and South Africa are compared. The research approach of the study was descriptive and explorative in nature. As a quantitative design, a structured questionnaire was used to solicit responses in Lesotho and South Africa. It was established that both Lesotho and South Africa have somewhat similar problems – although, to a greater extent, Lesotho needs much more urgent attention. Although the processes of South Africa need to be improved, the Republic releases a passport much faster and more efficiently than Lesotho. Economic issues are also revealed by the study as unavoidable factors that always affect technological developments in Africa. The study reveals that the latest MIS for passport processing has facilitated modern, automated border-control systems and resultant e-passports that incorporate more biometric information of citizens to passports – thanks to modern RFID technologies. One can anticipate that this study will provide simple, affordable and secure IT solutions for passport processing. Key words: Information Technology (IT); Management Information Systems (MIS); E-Government; E-Passport; Biometrics; and RFID.

Abstract:
In this thesis, we have studied the phenomena of value co-creation in IoT ecosystem, while considering the potential impacts of GDPR on IT value co-creation in the IoT ecosystem. IT firms’ ability to create value is an important aspect of their existence and growth in which case they pursuit different and several means to accomplish this task. IT firms that operate within the IoT ecosystem are categorised as Enablers, Engagers, and Enhancers who interact, work together to provide the technology and services needed to both market the IoT and to deploy it for their own business operations. These actors usually deem it necessary to create value through a co-creation process with customers in order to create well needed, tailored and up-to-date IoT solutions. In such case, customers’ data play a significant role in the development process. Through computer analysis, these data can reveal insightful information that can lead to the creation of relevant and appropriate IT solutions. However, the EU new and upcoming General Data Protection Regulation stand to have some impacts on this creative process, by regulating data practices in technological activities, thereby, creating several concerns among the IT community.

This essay focuses on the production written by fans that use digital technology to upload their work, known in cyberspace as fanfics. These fans are anonymous people who submit their texts, their fanfics, to the screening of proofreaders and readers who united by the same literary taste and/or by the desire to improve their writing style feedback on, and take part in, each others´ work. A look at different cyber environments, particularly blogs and websites, reveals that fanfics have become a new type of textual creation. Our aim is to describe the universe within which fanfics, or fanfictions, exist so as to show how their shared authorship is built. Unlike school students, fanfic writers place themselves as the subject of their text, assume their authorship when they position themselves vis-a-vis a text, and, by making use of different genres, do not let the dialogue end. In order to penetrate the nature of such fans, who become authors themselves, or co-authors of an original work, we fall back on the observations made by theorists of Social Discourse Analysis. Our conclusion is that in cyberspace there is a new space for textual production, wherein it is possible to dialogue, (re) create, and for fanfics to present a smooth conception of authorship since they spring from an existing idea already accepted in the publishing universe and even by other media types. The fanfic writer places himself as a co-author of an original published work by getting hold of an idea that already exists, of a style, and starts a new game. Drawn by the voice of the original author, he seeks to emulate the same features, the same style, so as to find new players/readers who wish to share and discuss with him his authorship

Abstract:
What are the frames to which authors inspired by the comics legacy refer inthe digital environment, characterized by the convergence of media and discursive forms ? How do they refer to such frames in order to make sense and to tell digital stories from which readers are able to share the standards of translation, find routines for their interpretation, and feel entertained by the selection and the arrangement of events ? After setting the context in which emerged the first accounts identified as « original digital comics », the study focuses on the indexical analysis of interviews with authors and readers of two such stories. The analysis reveals the originality of the frames arrangements made by the authors and recognized by their readers. This study shows the importance of sensemaking activities for the invention and adoption of new narrative forms. The critical review of this work raises several methodological issues, particularly regarding the place of the scientist as an actor engaged in the sensemaking activity, but also about the the importance given to words in this kind of researches, and finally about the appropriate interview methods in order to find and explain indexical marks leading to the actors' frames

In this thesis I investigate the extent to which companies can build a more communal environment out of their fan pages while also evaluating the corresponding brand value that may come from having such a communal environment. My research is comprised in three articles: in the first article, I describe how the brand image is created or augmented in the fan page environment, therefore providing demonstrable evidence of value creation. In the second article, I describe how individuals use fan page semiotic elements to communicate their identities. Finally, in the third article, I describe the possible communal characteristics of a fan page and the conditions that enable it to evolve to the virtual brand community concept. As a result, I will contribute to the marketing literature on the use of Facebook for communicating brand identity, on the co-creation of the brand image in social media context, and on the conceptual definition of fan pages as a communal environment.

Abstract:
Through more than five years of extensive, participatory research the writer became a fully integrated member of the World of Warcraft community he set out to study. By actually living the grounded practices that constitute the everyday life he concludes that the mundane, often repetitive practice has very little to do with the cyber-utopian claim that one can flee the body and become who they want on the Internet. Instead this doctoral thesis argues that the constant transitions of the borders between offline and online, virtual and real, body and avatar, play and work, player and producer are best described with the concept of leakage. Using leakage to describe the perforated borders that surrounds the game not only allows an understanding of World of Warcraft as a powerful site for production of meaning and culture but also places it far from the traditional understandings of separated fun, play and games. Play as an activity has traditionally been described with three intrinsic features: it is separable from everyday life, in particular from work; it is safe, meaning that it isn’t productive nor does it carry consequence and finally that play is pleasurable or fun. World of Warcraft doesn’t easily admit to these features and should not be understood as neither innocent utopia nor as a devoured mimesis, but rather as an expansion of the life space where players repeatedly and deliberately stretch beyond the producer’s intentions and create a world consisting of work, unwritten social norms, creativity and friendship. Players are social laborers that produce the core of what makes World of Warcraft what it is: a serious game.

Infomediary is one of the important applications of e-commerce. It is a kind of media to combine or connect the supply and demand together. In the traditional industry design business, there are various kinds of requirements of supply and demand, inclusive of the matching of buyers and manufacturers, the search of conceptual design and so forth. At this digital era, Internet has already become the important means of commercial operation. The main purpose of this paper is to study whether industry design can reach the intermediary through Internet. In the paper, there are literature review, depth interview and case study to build the infomediary model of industry design in the future. In literature review, we build a general business operation procedure of industrial design, which includes four parties-buyers, product manufacturers, design firms and consumers. Based on the procedure, five required interview questionnaire parts in industrial design are brought forth, which includes business matching, communication, design information, marketing and sales channel. In depth interview, we interview five companies to understand their intermediary demands as well as matching ways and regard the transaction cost theory and the characteristic of the network as the main bases to analyze the interview result and find intermediary opportunities. In case study, in order to understand business situations, service items and ways of design intermediary, we analyze two types of design informediary websites and choose one domestic and foreign representative websites for each type. Finally, we summarize the results and put forward an ideal infomediary model of industry design as well as further business strategies as the study conclusion. According to the results of this study, intermediary demands of industry design are also related to human resources of design, real product trade, demands of business value chain and so forth. As for the intermediary service for industry design, “Idea matching service” is a feasible opportunity. Through Internet cooperation, the manufacturer can obtain ideas and the idea worker can find the manufacturer who is interested in his ideas, too. It also expands companies’ value chain of design from companies’ designers, satellite factories, to global net space.

In the history of the interaction with external environment, human cognition has never been so greatly driven by the use of “visivality” as today. Thus images as the center play an important role in popular culture. Among them, the ACG image has long been well received by readers. Through spontaneous reading and writing behavior, a “fan” effect occurred. Especially in recent years, the ACG fans extend their interests to the Internet virtual world. Using various kinds of digital tools, they not only meet their needs in reading, writing and desires for communication, but also create unlimited space for self-presentation or individual performance. Undoubtedly, these fan creative activities reveal different value and extraordinary significance. Standing against the mainstream of visual art education, the researcher hopes to explore another vibrant phenomenon of visual activities on the Internet. By adopting art-based research method, the researcher observes and records what exists on the different network platforms, and then analyses and compares the research particpants in different context under the main subject through reading and writing activities. In addition, questionnaires and in-deepth interview are given at the same time. Through the analysis of the study and discussion, we conclude that: 1. To respond to high-speed flow of network information and change, the images with plain narrative structure and strong stimulation are more in line with “fast food" type of watching needs. 2. Digital images can be copied and appropriated to create a virtual reality. This reflects that technology certainly brings the convenience for creation, but at the same time destroys the “aura” of art. 3. Reading is a reflection of an ideological struggle. 4. The anonymity, interactivity, and identity provided by blog platform is very much in line with the needs of internet image makers, for they can reinvent their “avatar” in the virtual world. Therefore blogs become the main fields for performance. 5. The preference of the original text drives fans to engage in creative activities. After reading the original text, the reader creates their derivative works through addendum, subversion, capture, replication and sappropriation.
