Abstract:
The assessment of fangs is a fundamental part of clinical examination of viperid snakes. The long curved venom fang is carried by short, highly mobile maxilla. Short anaesthesia is advised for safe physical examination and radiography of the mouth cavity. The fangs are gently forced outside the fang pocket by passing the bar or forceps on the palato-maxillary arch, and rotating them rostrally shifting the mucosal fold. Functional fangs are periodically shed and several generations of replacement teeth lie behind and beneath each fang. In case of fang fracture, therapy should be limited to flushing with a solution of chlorhexidine or povidone iodine, and topical application of pro-coagulant and antibacterial cream. Therapy of chronic fang inflammation is based on removal of necrotized fang and repeated abundant irrigation of the fang pocket. Treatment of chronic stomatitis consists of flushing with chlorhexidine or povidone iodine, physical removal of the plaques, administration of analgesics and antibiotics (marbofloxacin, enrofloxacin or ceftazidime). Extra-oral surgical approach is the best method for odontogenic abscess removal. A vigorous flushing with sterile saline solution, chlorhexidine and povidone iodine and topical application of antibiotics (antibiotic embedded surgical sponge) is advised. Force feeding of the anorectic patient suffering from fang inflammation is a mandatory part of the standard treatment protocol.

Abstract:
Venomous snakes—the pinnacle of snake evolution—are characterized by their possession of venom-conducting fangs ranging from grooved phenotypes characterizing multiple lineages of rear-fanged taxa to tubular phenotypes present in elapids, viperids and atractaspidines. Despite extensive research, controversy still exists on the selective pressures involved in fang phenotype diversification. Here, we test the hypothesis that larger fangs and consequently a shift to an anterior position in the maxilla evolved to compensate for the costs of structural changes, i.e. higher stress upon impact in tubular fangs compared to grooved fangs. Direct voxel-based stress simulations conducted on high-resolution µCT scans, analysed within a phylogenetic framework, showed no differences in stress distribution between the three fang phenotypes, despite differences in (relative) fang length. These findings suggest that additional compensatory mechanisms are responsible for the biomechanical optimization and that fang length might instead be related to differential striking behaviour strategies.

Abstract:
We propose Factual News Graph (FANG), a novel graphical social context representation and learning framework for fake news detection. Unlike previous contextual models that have targeted performance, our focus is on representation learning. Compared to transductive models, FANG is scalable in training as it does not have to maintain the social entities involved in the propagation of other news and is efficient at inference time, without the need to reprocess the entire graph. Our experimental results show that FANG is better at capturing the social context into a high-fidelity representation, compared to recent graphical and nongraphical models. In particular, FANG yields significant improvements for the task of fake news detection and is robust in the case of limited training data. We further demonstrate that the representations learned by FANG generalize to related tasks, such as predicting the factuality of reporting of a news medium.

Abstract:
AbstractAlthough the front-fanged venom delivery system of the Elapidae is believed to be derived from an aglyphous or opisthoglyphous colubroid ancestor, opinion is divided as to the end of the maxilla on which the proteroglyph fang originated. This study was undertaken to determine whether the evolutionary precursor of the proteroglyph fang was (a) a grooved posterior fang which migrated anteriorly, or (b) an enlarged anterior tooth which secondarily developed a groove for the conduction of venom. The surface morphology of the maxillary teeth of colubrid genera was examined using scanning electron microscopy. Ridges present on the lingual and labial surfaces of anterior maxillary teeth and on the anterior and posterior surfaces of posterior maxillary teeth were identified as morphological markers of potential value in distinguishing the anterior and posterior maxillary teeth of colubrid snakes, and in determining the origin of the proteroglyph fang. Patterns of ridges on the surfaces of elapid fangs examined were found to be consistent with the hypothesis that the evolutionary precursor of the proteroglyph fang was an opisthoglyph fang which migrated anteriorly.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) created the Fast, Adaptable, Next-Generation Ground Vehicle (FANG) program to design and develop a new heavy, amphibious infantry fighting vehicle (IFV). DARPA, through the FANG program, is undertaking a radically novel approach to the design and manufacture of complex defense systems, and is hosting a series of prize-based design competitions. These are called the FANG Challenges, and their products will be progressively more complex vehicle subsystems, culminating in the design of a full IFV. They leverage the META design tools and the VehicleFORGE collaboration environment to significantly change the design experience and widen the aperture for design innovation. The META tool suite is a set of free, open source tools for compositional design synthesis at multiple levels of abstraction, design trade space exploration, metrics assessment, and probabilistic verification of system correctness. VehicleFORGE is an open source development collaboration environment for the creation of large, complex systems by numerous unaffiliated designers with the goal of democratizing the design innovation process by engaging several orders of magnitude more talent than the current industry model. This work summarizes the results from the first FANG challenge through analysis of participants, team structures, and the designs created.

McGee, O. G., and C. Fang. "A Reduced-Order Integrated Design Synthesis for the Three-Dimensional Tailored Vibration Response and Flutter Control of High-Bypass Shroudless Fans." In ASME Turbo Expo 2008: Power for Land, Sea, and Air. ASMEDC, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/gt2008-51479.

Full text
Abstract:
A new reduced-order design synthesis technology has been developed for vibration response and flutter control of cold-stream, high-bypass ratio, shroudless fans. To simplify the design synthesis (optimization) of the fan, a significant order reduction of the mechanical response and stiffness-shape design synthesis has been achieved. The assumed cyclic symmetric baseline fan is modeled as a cascade of tuned, shroudless, arbitrarily-shaped, wide-chord blades, each with a reduced-order of degrees of freedom using a three-dimensional (3-D) elasticity-based, meshless energy model [Fang, (2002); McGee et al (2008); Fang et al (2008)]. The convergence accuracy and mechanical response error of the present 3-D predictions were estimated nearly one percent above the exact mechanical response of the baseline fan. In off-design operation, the frequency margins of the lower flex-torsion modes of a fan may be dangerously close to integral-order resonant and empirical stall flutter boundaries. It is shown that an optimized mechanical stiffness through material properties (via. symmetric angle-ply orientations) and an optimized fan shape (via. variation of blade thickness from hub-to-mid-radial height) can be found to reduce the likelihood of resonant response and flutter on a Campbell diagram. A baseline fan is numerically optimized using a first-of-its-kind reduced-order design synthesis technology involving a solution of simultaneous nonlinear partial differential equations determining the necessary and sufficient Kuhn-Tucker conditions of optimality of constrained minimization. Solution accuracy and validity of the reduced-order design synthesis technology is benchmarked against a widely-used conventional method of nonlinear programming (via. sequential unconstrained minimization technique). Fan design optima is obtained that (1) achieves multiple frequency margins and satisfies multiple empirical stall flutter constraints, (2) controls the twist-flex vibratory response in the lowest (fundamental) mode, and (3) ensures the mechanical strength integrity of the optimized angle-ply lay-up under steady centrifugal tension and gas bending stresses. Baseline and optimally-restructured Campbell diagrams and design sensitivity calculations are presented. Design histories of fan stiffness and shape and nondimensional constraints (i.e., frequency margins, reduced frequencies, twist-flex vibratory response, first-ply failure principal stress limits, and hub-to-mid-blade height thickness distribution) show that a proper implementation of fan stiffness tailoring and shape (thickness) optimization of the fan assembly produces a feasible Campbell diagram that satisfies all design goals. An off-design analysis of the optimized fan shows little sensitivity to twist-flex coupling response and flutter with respect to small variability or errors in optimum design construction. Industry manufacturing processes may introduce these small errors. Finally, the developed reduced-ordered technology of fan design is shown to be highly cost-effective and accurate, when its predictive mechanical response capability is compared to general-purpose finite element technology widely-used by industry.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: As a common type of clinical dementia, the prevalence rate of vascular dementia(VaD) increased rapidly in recent years, damaging both patients’ health and social-economic prospect. There is currently no effective treatment for VaD, though western medicines can slightly improve patients' cognitive function, but not brought a significant improvement in daily life ability. Chinese herbal medicine(CHM) has been widely employed to treat dementia for more than 2000 years in China. Despite the proliferation of relevant literature, there is still a lack of evidence to prove the effectiveness and safety of such therapy. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis protocol is aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of CHM forVaD. Information sources: 6 English databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Springer, CENTRAL and WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform) and 4 Chinese databases (Wan fang Database, Chinese Scientific Journals Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database).

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: Patients with obstructive sleep apnea hypoventilation syndrome (OSAHS) suffer from repeated hypoxemia, hypercapnia, and sleep structure disorders at night, leading to daytime lethargy and complications of heart, brain, lung, and blood vessel damage, which seriously affect their quality of life and life span. Clinical studies have shown that auricular point pressing therapy has an excellent therapeutic effect on OSAHS, and has the potential to be a complementary and alternative therapy for patients with OSAHS. Currently, systematic reviews and meta-analyses evaluating the efficacy and safety of electroacupuncture for the treatment of OSAHS are lacking. This study aimed to address this deficiency. Information sources: RCTs of auricular point pressing therapy in the treatment of OSAHS were searched in the Web of Science, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Allied and Complementary Medicine Database (AMED), China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Wan-Fang Database. The retrieval time is from database construction to the present.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: By 3 to 4 months of age, infants can keep their necks upright and look into both eyes horizontally. But infants with CMT have a wry neck also known as a twisted neck. Complementary therapies have been commonly used to treat CMT, such as tuina, acupuncture, herbal medicine. Among them, external application of herbal medicine is non-surgical and non-invasive inventions so it can be used widely in East Asia. This review aims to evaluate any form of external application of herbal medicines in CMT, such as cream, oil, extract, form of patch, etc. Information sources: We will electronically search the following database 4 English databases(MEDLINE, PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials), 3 Chinese databases(China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI), Chinese Scientific Journal Database(VIP), Wan Fang Database), 4 Korean medical databases(Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System(OASIS), Korean Studies Information Service System(KISS), National Digital Science Links(NDSL), Research Information Sharing Service(RISS)) from their founding date to June 2022, without any language restrictions.

Zevotek, Robin, and Steve Kerber. Fire Service Summary Report: Study of the Effectiveness of Fire Service Positive Pressure Ventilation During Fire Attack in Single Family Homes Incorporating Modern Construction Practices. UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute, May 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.54206/102376/ncck4947.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a continued tragic loss of firefighter and civilian lives, as shown by fire statistics. One significant contributing factor is the lack of understanding of fire behavior in residential structures resulting from the use of ventilation as a firefighter practice on the fire ground. The changing dynamics of residential fires as a result of the changes in home construction materials, contents, size and geometry over the past 30 years compounds our lack of understanding of the effects of ventilation on fire behavior. Positive Pressure Ventilation (PPV) fans were introduced as a technology to increase firefighter safety by controlling the ventilation. However, adequate scientific data is not available for PPV to be used without increasing the risk to firefighters. This fire research report details the experimental data from cold flow experiments, fuel load characterization experiments and full scale fire experiments. During the project it was identified that the positive pressure attack (PPA) and positive pressure ventilation (PPV) were often used interchangeably. For the purpose of this report they have been defined as PPA for when the fan is utilized prior to fire control and PPV for when the fan is used post fire control. The information from the full scale tests was reviewed with assistance from our technical panel of fire service experts to develop tactical considerations for the use of PPV fans in residential single family structures.
