Full textThis dissertation aims to research the rendering of cultural references in the fansubbing of Spanish into Chinese based on a corpus of translations of the Spanish TV series The Ministry of Time by the groups Shenying and YYeTs. In the quantitative analysis, we not only study the density of cultural references in the corpus, but we also analyze the translation techniques used. Then, we focus on the relations between the classification of cultural references and the classification of translation techniques. In the qualitative analysis, we pay attention to the use of amplification with notes on the screen before summarizing its forms, situations of use, functions and problems that were observed in the corpus. This dissertation has great value for Translation Studies as it delves into the study of the translation techniques in a non-professional translational form. Furthermore, it emphasizes on the rendering of cultural references from Spanish to Chinese, an important issue for audiovisual translators’ training of this language combination.

Full textFan subtitling, or fansubbing, has become a new form of subtitling, in which fans, often with little to no training, subtitle a film or series they enjoy, and then release the subtitles or a subtitled version of the film on the internet for free download, often by other fans, who often have an interest in the source language and culture and who may have an interest in using subtitles as a language-learning device. Subtitles produced for this fan audience can differ substantially from those created in a professional environment. For this reason, fansubs could be seen as a new genre of subtitling, employing strategies that would be unacceptable in a professional subtitled product aimed at general consumption. Professional subtitlers and translators are encouraged to follow the norms or ‘best practice’ of their industry in order to produce subtitles that are consistent, of a high quality and that have been made easy to process through methods such as length reduction and domestication. Fansubbers have no such imperatives imposed on their subtitles, being mostly self-taught and often judged by their peers and viewers on the ‘authenticity’ of their translations, rather than by other professionals and their standards. This creates an environment in which more creative translation strategies and presentation become possible, in order to create a translation that will be approved of by fans with a special interest in linguistic and cultural content. This need for the appearance of faithfulness or authenticity seems to result in a more source-oriented and complete translation approach, and a corpus-based investigation of French fansubs appears to confirm this. This dissertation attempts to explore the differences found in the two genres by analysing and comparing a translational corpus of professionally-produced and fanproduced English subtitles of French films. The average length of the subtitles and instances of discourse markers in the two sets of subtitles are compared in order to determine the degree of reduction found in each type of subtitle, and from the source to target culture. The translation strategies used in the two types of subtitling differ, with the fansub opting for a more complete rendering of the source text dialogue and a more source-oriented approach, which retains elements of spoken language found in the film dialogue. It appears that the differences between the target texts may be influenced by very different contexts in which they are produced, and possibly the differing needs and expectations of the audiences of the two genres.

Full textFansubbing consists of translating and subtitling foreign mass media productions by netizens interested in these films, television programs or cartoons. This phenomenon is growing rapidly in Chinese cyberspace with the proliferation of the Internet and the increasing number of foreign language learners. Fansub groups are organized by passionate amateurs willing to accomplish this work together. Characterized by a virtual workplace, heterogeneity of members, voluntary participation, and the non-commercial nature of their production, fansub groups have attracted the attention of academic researchers. Previous studies have considered the cultural aspects of fansub, problems of legitimacy as well as the question of audiovisual translation quality. However, this study considers fansub groups as communities of practice in which learning occurs. Specifically, we examine how one group’s members acquire new knowledge and improve their language abilities through the practice of subtitling. The study is based on participant observation in a Chinese-French fansub group named Yueyue Fansub. We collected and analyzed information and documents created during the work process. We also conducted interviews with ten fansub group members to deepen our empirical understanding. Our analysis shows that the fansub group has all three of the characteristics deemed essential in a community of practice: joint enterprise, mutual engagement and shared repertoire, and that this combination supports the group as well as members’ learning. In addition, analysis of common mistakes made by fansubbers combined with their self-evaluations indicate that fansub practices help improve language ability. Learning takes place during the subtitling work as well as in and through interactions among group members or with people outside the group.

Living in the age of globalization, cultural exchanges go beyond imagination due to rise of digital technologies. With the help of technologies, audiovisual programs have been increasing and presented in different ways. Fansubbing, a voluntary activity between fans, has been prevailing and recognized as an integral part of audiovisual translation studies. Unlike well-trained professional subtitlers, most fansubbers have not received adequate training. This study uses Pitch Perfect and its sequel, Pitch Perfect 2, as the primary objects of research. Drawing on the skopos theory and the concept of domestication and foreignization, this research has sought to identified distinct differences between fansubbing and professional subtitling. Overall, the purpose of professional subtitling and fansubbing is to bridge the gap between two languages and cultures. Different purposes lead to different translation strategies. Literal translation is mostly used in both professional subtilting and fansubbing. Besides, translators tend to tone down the language when dealing with swear words, either by translating in a weak force or resorting to deletion. The use of explication is different in professional subtitling and fansubbing. Professional subtitlers adopt paraphrasing to deal with long sentence or certain cultural references, whereas fansubbers frequently use annotation or specification in their translation. This research also argues that the extra information presented in fansubbed versions is for language learning purposes. After close textual analysis, the results reveal that the translation orientations in professional subtitling and fansubbing are domestication and foreignization, respectively.
Abstract This study is developed within the framework of Descriptive Translation Studies, more specifically, within the theoretical framework of translation norms and translation strategies and it aims to study some of the main strategies and regularities of the fansubbing phenomenon. Fansubbing is an amateur subtitling team work phenomenon specialized in English translation of Japanese cartoons or “anime” and is freely available on the Internet. This study will focus on the translations into English, since they are direct translations and are recognized by the fandom as the rolling model of fansubbing in other languages. Since this is a relatively new team work phenomenon, the first chapter of this study devotes a brief introduction to the reasons that led to the emergence of fansubbing, of the members involved in this activity and the production stages of a fansubbed episode. This chapter will finish with some reflections on "fansubbing" ethics. The corpus created for this study is presented in Chapter 2: it is an electronic, parallel and aligned corpus with an audiovisual source text in Japanese and three audiovisual target texts in English from three different fansubbing groups. The text included in the non-translated sub-corpus, an episode of the historical “anime” Hakuouki Shinsengumi Kitan and the texts included in the translated sub-corpus are both from 2010. The results of quantitative and qualitative analysis are presented in Chapter 3 and, last but not least, some considerations are drawn about the translation and subtitling model preferred by fans.

Full textIn the field of Audiovisual Translation, there is a type of subtitling that is less conventional and less known than the professional one: fansubbing. This dissertation aims to review literature on this form of subtitling, to complement it, to offer a more up-to-date perspective, and to contextualize it within the Portuguese reality. In the process, certain heterogeneous characteristics within fansubbing are laid out, the fansubbers' methodologies are presented (organization, technical means, subtitling techniques, etc.) and their resulting quality is analyzed, which is ultimately demonstrated through the study of two specific cases from Portuguese fansubbing. Along with this, possible preconceptions associated with fansubbing are debunked and attention is drawn to its innovations and/or advantages over conventional subtitling.

The previous literature on fansubbing has focused mainly on Chinese fansub groups or the qualities of their fansubs, leaving Taiwan’s online fansubbing practices untouched. This master’s thesis aims to find the characteristics of Dadas translation community, which exhibits a significant presence among Taiwan’s online fansub communities of English programs and videos. The thesis also attempts to describe the features demonstrated by Taiwan’s online fansubbing culture reflected through the attributes of Dadas translation community. The thesis sorts out characteristics of Dadas translation community by comparing its traits with general traits of Chinese fansub groups as well as analyzing the differences. Dadas is similar to Chinese fansub groups in terms of community scale. However, Dadas and Chinese fansub groups have different characteristics in many aspects such as community operations and fansub formats, owing to their distinctive Internet environments. The varying characteristics of the two kinds of fansub communities reveal the fact that Taiwan’s online fansubbing culture is different from that of China. The thesis begins with investigating Dadas’ characteristics in terms of three aspects—the development background, community operations, and audiovisual texts. Then the thesis also attempts to depict attributes of Taiwan’s online fansubbing culture from the analysis, the related literature as well as the first-hand interviews the writer collects.

Full textThis paper proposes to study the main differences in translation norms and strategies in subtitling practices in streaming and fansubbing in European Portuguese. We applied the theoretical proposals by Gideon Toury (1995/2012) and Andrew Chesterman (1997/2016) and used the study case methodology, by selecting an episode of an anime series available on Netflix, which was also subtitled by a Portuguese fansub group, RevAnime. First, this paper presents the main theoretical framework, describing the main audiovisual modalities, with special focus on subtitling and presenting the main subtitling parameters required by Netflix, as well as a description of fansubbing and its practice in Portugal. Second, it provides a description of the methodology used, the corpus created for this purpose and the criteria for its selection. Third, the results of the comparative analysis of the corpus are presented through the selection and analysis of representative examples, systemizing the main differences between translation norms and strategies followed in subtitling in streaming and in fansubbing in European Portuguese. The results of the analysis did not meet the expectations. In the translation presented by Netflix we identified literal translations, conforming to an initial norm of adequacy. In addition, some translation mistakes were found, as well as translation options that go against the professional subtitling practice. In the translation of the fansub group RevAnime the information is paraphrased, resulting in more fluent utterances in the target language, thus, revealing an initial norm of acceptability, except in the case of referents specific to the Japanese culture, which are preserved and explained in a translator’s note at the top of the screen, a common practice among fansub groups.

Full textThis study was developed in the scope of master’s degree in Translation and it aims to describe the translation for subtitling of cultural references as an obstacle in translation. In this study we will emphasize that Translation can be regarded as challenging because of socio-cultural characteristics. In this sense we propose to broaden and explore this socio-cultural aspects, namely cultural references, on fansubbing. To provide a theoretical framework that could guide the reader in this study, it was established a review of concepts and definitions of previous researches on professional translation, fansubbing and cultural references, based on Cintas & Muñoz Sánchez (2006), Díaz Cintas & Remael (2007), Dwyer (2012), and Pedersen (2011; 2016), some of which in European Portuguese, Pais (2015) and Rocha (2012). In this context, we will proceed with a comparative analysis of the regularities of translation strategies of cultural references in fansubbing and in professional subtitling. Concerning the practical framework of this dissertation, it was used a bilingual and parallel corpus (English-European Portuguese), on the basis of the examination and comparation of the data from the non-translated and translated corpus. The audiovisual text used for this analysis was chosen due to the high frequency of cultural references and consisted in the 13th season of the popular series Family Guy. This methodology allows us to examine the translation strategies used by the fansubber and professional translator. In this study it was observed that the retention was the most used strategy by both translators. Furthermore it was associated with other factors not only concerning subtilling but also with the familiarity of the reference by the target audience.

This thesis, written under the scope of the in Translation and Multilingual Communication has as purpose the comparative study of the work methods in amateur subtitling vs professional subtitling. In order to analyse the quality of the subtitles produced by amateurs, a community of amateur subtitlers were studied, observing their work methods, mastery of languages and subtitling issues, tools, resources, etc… Later the same process was applied to professional translators. In order to shape a theoretical foundation with quality, leading to a project focused on these two realities of subtitling, a review of the literature in the field of Audiovisual Translation was made. Lastly, the practical part of this project analysed the work methods of both subtitlers (amateur and professional), to achieve it, practical exercises were proposed to the subjects, exercises that consisted on the subtitling and translation of audiovisual clips of an anime filme. To finish this process, after the analysis of the exercises, the subjects were interviewed. Thus was possible to examine the working methods of the translators either amateur or professionals, many variables were observed and thus the evaluation and matching of the quality of the final product. After this analysis we will see that the subtitler had a better performance that the fansubbers.
