Abstract:
The purpose of this essay is to present the reader an analysis of Harry Potter as high fantasy and how Rowling has expanded on high fantasy norms which can be seen as a contributing factor to why the saga became such a global phenomenon.  This essay will show the ways in which Harry Potter elaborates on the high-fantasy norms by analyzing its narrative elements (setting, narrative structure, characters, and language). The first part will be a brief introduction to high-fantasy and its norms while the second part will be an analysis of the novels in terms of these norms.

Castleman, Samantha G. "Inexhaustible Magic: Folklore as World Building in Harry Potter." TopSCHOLAR®, 2017. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/1973.

Full text
Abstract:
The practice of secondary world building, the creation of a fantasy realm with its own unique laws and systems has long been a tradition within the genre of fantasy writing. In many notable cases, such as those publications by J.R.R. Tolkien and H.P. Lovecraft, folklore exhibited in the world of the reader has been specifically used not only to construct these fantasy realms, but to add depth and believability to their presentation. The universe of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series demonstrates this same practice of folklore-as-world-building, yet her construction does much more than just create a fantasy realm. By using both folklore which predates her writing as well as created elements which while unique to her secondary world specifically reflect the world of the reader, Rowling is able to create a fantasy realm which is highly political, complex and multivocal, yet still accessible to young readers through its familiarity. Specifically through her use of cryptids, belief representation, and folk narratives both invented and recontextualized, Rowling is able to juxtapose her fantasy universe to the real-world of the reader, in effect inventing a believable secondary world but also demonstrating to young readers the ways in which her writing should be interpreted.

Mur, Kristina. "Mothers and their Children: Harry Potter and Melanie Klein." FIU Digital Commons, 2014. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/1268.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyzes the mother-child relationship in the Harry Potter novels by using Melanie Klein’s object-relation based theory. I argue the mothers and their relationship with their offspring represent fragments of a whole complicated psyche. The characters are not analyzed as individuals, but instead as pieces, sometimes multiple pieces, of a whole psyche. When these characters and novels are taken together, a whole, multi-faceted person comes into view. Rowling depicts both good and bad mothers, and children who characterize different positions according to Klein. These positions are the paranoid-schizoid position with Harry Potter and the depressive position with Sirius Black and Rubeus Hagrid. Although the series suggests a developmental arc or a coming of age story within fantasy literature, there is no linear progression; instead, there are disruptive positions without development.

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to analyze Harry Potter saga fanfictions in all its specificities ─ format, definitions, characteristics, posting and audience. The latter, in turn, is a unique audience and very present in our research objective: the fan. Considering the technological evolution that our current society has gone through, new literary genres have been developed and gained more space on the internet. One of the reasons for this to occur is also the significant increase of mass culture, a term defined by Kellner (2001), and big best sellers releases that accumulate a legion of followers, such as Harry Potter, leader of the fanfictions accessed on the website used as a source for this research. Among more than 800,000 Harry Potter fanfictions that we had access to, we selected five, all of them belonging to the specific alternative universe classification, whose definition is a rereading and/or adaptation of the original work to a new context, destiny or personality of the characters, thus, distancing itself from what it was established in the original text. The question that moves this research is: since the fan of the original Harry Potter work was attracted to the series, especially considering the existence of literary tools, such as narrator modality and verisimilitude, used to create a reality parallel to our reality and to convince its readers to accept it without question, what keeps readers interested and assiduously following the texts of alternative ...

Faria, Paula Soares. "The journey of the villain in the Harry Potter series :: an archetypal study of fantasy villains." Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1843/ECAP-7LQEGY.

Full text
Abstract:
Fantasy has featured in our culture since the beginning of times. From ancient mythology to futuristic Sci-Fi, stories have been filled with fantastic characters and settings. Disguised under the cover of the fantastic there is a heavy load of symbolism being conveyed through structures called archetypes. The idea of archetype as a symbolic structure which is repeated countlessly over time and space was identified and studied by the psychoanalyst Carl Gustav Jung and these archetypes can be recognized in many forms of art or even in dreams. Fantasy usually has archetypes as its basic structure. The symbols expressed as archetypes are supposedly understandable through cultures, and yet, each culture may express the same archetype in different ways. An important archetype that too often features in fantastical stories is that of the hero. Joseph Campbell has explored it, based on Jung's archetype theory, and called the pattern that composes heroes worldwide the Monomyth or the hero journey. This journey can be clearly seen in stories from ancient folk-tale and mythology to contemporary works, which is the case of the Harry Potter series. A literary phenomenon of the 21st century, the Harry Potter series tells the story of a boy wizard and his journey into herohood. In every hero journey, its pinnacle is reached in the confrontation with an arch(e)-villain. Every step in the journey bears a symbolic significance and the villain as part of that journey follows the rule. The villain is mostly the force to which the hero has to oppose, he is also a representation of the unknown; therefore this character is usually presented without a past or reason to be. However, the villain in the Harry Potter series, Lord Voldemort, lives his own journey; one which is incredibly similar to the archetypal journey lived by the hero, Harry. This thesis studies the archetype of villains in fantasy literature and the journey of the hero as it can be related to the villain in the Harry Potter series. This study is based on the archetypal the ory of C. G. Jung and on the pattern traced for the hero by Campbell. The journeys of both villain and hero are compared for the proposition of a contemporary understanding of the villain archetype.

Lockwood, Elizabeth. "Trauma and absent parents in fairy tale and fantasy : fairy stories, 'Harry Potter', 'Twilight', and 'His Dark Materials'." Thesis, Swansea University, 2010. https://cronfa.swan.ac.uk/Record/cronfa42545.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis begins with an examination of paradigmatic, classic fairy tales and moves on to the contemporary fiction series of Harry Potter, Twilight and His Dark Materials mapping similarities of content in relation to trauma with specific reference to absent or lost parents. Highlighted in this study are the continuities, parallels and differences of the treatment of trauma and absent parents in these texts, with reference to their structure, content, themes, ideologies and preoccupations. The absence of parents is a recurring theme of fairy tale and fantasy stories, and leads to the creation of new or surrogate family structures such as stepfamilies, extended families and elective families. These new family structures, and the emotional, ethical and cultural tensions arising from them, are critical themes of the texts this thesis examines. The causes of trauma, including abuse, neglect, change, loss, death, violence and related features are mapped and deciphered, noting the similarities across the texts studied. These experiences can cause a person to become psychologically disturbed, with a range of damaging consequences. Obsession, repetition, fragmentation and repression are themes which are mapped across the chosen texts, as is the idea of containment. Also the importance of psychological splitting is uncovered and examined within the stories. Splitting is a very important element of trauma. It can be a survival mechanism, a moment of life change and a way of repressing a traumatic experience, and is often the catalyst for action within the plot. This thesis shows how the characters of these texts have portrayed and dealt with their traumatic affects and examines the traumatic journeys they have undertaken within the plots of these fantastical stories.

Abstract:

My intentions with this essay has been to examine the World in which the story of J. K. Rowlings Harry Potter takes place, the structure, narrative and restrictions, in order to place the suite of novels in the tradition of the Fantasy genre. Since the release of the first book Harry Potter has become a household name, possibly more than any other contemporary literature written for children. Various readings concerning gender, etymological, linguistic aspects and so forth have been done, and in most cases the books are placed in the genre of Fantasy without distinguishing what in fact makes the novels Fantasy. I wanted to see which specific sectors of the books that place them in the genre, and, assuming that it would in fact fit into the Fantasy genre, in which ways it diverges from the tradition of the genre in means of the structure of the world/s of the story. I also looked at the faults in the logic within the novels to see if the inconsistencies in the rules of the world have an impact on the agency of the story.

I found the novels to be a part of the fantasy tradition, not only by having many intertextual relations and similar features to other fantasy-novels but also in the fundament of the story, its basic conditions such as the supernatural elements and the hidden places in the world of the books. The minor inconstancies that I found where to small to disrupt the narrative, and the fact that some of the aspects of the books drift slightly away from the logic of the world within the story have reasonable explanations such as making the story easier to relate to.

Glover, Jayne Ashleigh. "The Harry Potter phenomenon literary production, generic traditions, and the question of values." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002243.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the first four books of J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. It accounts for the widespread success of the novels by examining their publication and marketing histories, and their literary achievement as narratives including a sophisticated mix of generic traditions. Chapter One looks at the popularity of the novels, comparing their material production and marketing by Rowling’s English language publishers: Bloomsbury in Britain and Scholastic in the United States of America. The publisher’s influence on the public perception of each book is demonstrated by comparative study of its mode of illustration and layout. Further, the design of the books is linked to their strategic marketing and branding within the literary world. The second chapter considers Rowling’s debt to the school story. It concentrates first on the history of this relatively short-lived genre, briefly discussing its stereotypical features and values. Traditional elements of setting and characterisation are then examined to show how the Harry Potter novels present a value system which, though apparently old-fashioned, still has an ethical standpoint designed to appeal to the modern reader. Chapter Three focuses on the characterisation of Harry as a hero-figure, especially on how the influence of classical and medieval texts infuses Rowling’s portrayal of Harry as a hero in the chivalric mode. The episodes of “quest” and “test” in each book illustrate specifically how he learns the values of selflessness, loyalty, mercy and fairness. Chapter Four surveys the contribution of modern fantasy writing to the series. It shows how Rowling creates a secondary world that allows us to perceive magic as a metaphorical representation of power. This focus on the relationship between magic and power in turn has a bearing on our assessment of the author’s moral stance. The thesis concludes by suggesting that Rowling’s unusual mix of genres is justified by the values they share, and which are inscribed in her work: the generic combination forms a workable, new and exciting mode of writing that helps to account for the phenomenal popularity of the series.

Abstract:
xx, 800 p. : music. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number.
Despite the immense popular and critical response given to the Harry Potter narrative and phenomenon, little has been written about the music for the Harry Potter films. I establish that the aesthetic differences that viewers perceive between the different Harry Potter films are largely due to the musical approaches of composers John Williams, Patrick Doyle, and Nicholas Hooper over the course of four director/composer collaborations for the first five films. This study provides a rare opportunity to examine the work of different composers for a continuing narrative. Moreover, when we explore how music is used in varied ways within the films, we see how each musical approach shapes film visuals into the narrative that the filmmakers sought to convey; when the music changes, the story changes. Music creates the geographic, cultural, and temporal landscapes that draw us in to Harry's 'muggle' and magical worlds. Music defines the way we perceive Harry's emotional experiences of love, joy, loss, and death, and also defines the philosophical perspectives on the nature of evil and its conquest. Sometimes, the music provides clues to the mystery long before visuals and dialogue address them, and musical relationships (with visuals and within the music itself) allow us to perceive the properties and powers of magic and humanity that may otherwise transpire unseen. Music also plays a role in the types of humor that are represented in the films--from socially-sanctioned transgressions, to macabre, to bawdy, deadpan, and caricature. However, while the core narrative themes in the films are closely related to the main themes in Rowling's original novels, an examination of how Rowling's descriptions of musical events compare with representations of these events in the films reveals that Rowling created a more nuanced social landscape (especially with regard to gender) than is re-contextualized with music in the films.

Abstract:
To be able to develop their reading skills, pupils need not only to practise but also to be willing to practise. Being enticed to read is therefore an important factor for the development of reading. Research has shown that part of the attraction of reading is that readers can recognize themselves in the different constituents of a book, for example being able to identify with characters and finding the setting plausible. The books about Harry Potter have enticed many young people all over the world to read, and the question of what this attraction consists of is an interesting one, especially with regard to the fact that the books have many elements of magic and seemingly alien elements. The aim of this study is to investigate and reveal potential opportunities for self-recognition offered to the reader by the Harry Potter books. The study consists of a textual analysis focusing on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The study shows that both books offer the reader multiple opportunities for self-recognition, which can be linked to factors such as the reader’s emotional participation and the motifs in the books.

Abstract:
This essay will examine the youth novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling. The aim of this essay is to find tendencies of how the novel favours non-stereotypical male behaviour and characteristics. Using gender criticism, the novel and its most central male characters are analysed to highlight their gender characteristics. Symbols and metaphors constitute a part of the analysis for a more comprehensive examination. The results of this essay show that the male characters are divided into two factions, the good side and the evil side. It is evident that the male characters on the evil side are characterised by stereotypical male gender behaviour and the male characters on the good side tend to show a lack of stereotypical masculine traits. The Fantasy genre, which dictates a strong good versus evil storyline, extends this polarisation. The stereotypical male gender roles are therefore opposed and non-stereotypical male behaviour is promoted in the narration by favouring male vulnerability and ridiculing stereotypical masculine traits.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation provides a reading of the fantasy novel series Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling and The Belgariad by David Eddings. In particular this dissertation endeavours to recuperate a literary critical methodology rooted in Myth Criticism. Further, it seeks to demonstrate the continued relevance and necessity of this form of criticism in our postmodern era and to refute some of the commonplaces of postmodern critical theory, specifically the poststructuralist scepticism towards the idea of universal truth and individual agency. Using Jungian theory, myth critics ranging from Laurence Coupe to Joseph Campbell and incorporating various postmodern theorists, like the contemporary Marxist theorist Terry Eagleton, and fantasy critics like Brian Attebery and Ursula LeGuin, this dissertation aims to give a well-rounded analysis of the merits of looking at fantasy as a legitimate field of literary study. Moreover, this dissertation seeks to illustrate the fact that fantasy is capable of informing readers’ interaction with the ‘real’ world and that this genre allows for insight into identity formation in present day reality. The chief structure used to explore these claims is an analysis of the Hero’s Journey.

Abstract:
This thesis is a development of the theories presented by Carl Jung, Joseph Campbell, and Bruno Bettelheim concerning archetypes, the anima/animus concept, the Hero Cycle, and identity development through fairy tales. I argue that there are vital rites of passage missing in Anglo-Saxon culture, and while bibliotherapy cannot replace them, it can help adolescents synthesize their experiences. The theories of Jung, Campbell, and Bettelheim demonstrate this concept by defining segments of the story and how they apply to the reader. Because of the applicability, readers, despite their age, can use the examples in the book to help reconcile their own experiences and understand life as it relates to them. The works I examine include J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, Orson Scott Card's Alvin Maker series, J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, Ursula K. Le Guin's Earthsea trilogy, and David Eddings' Belgariad. Though it is impossible to test the effects of reading such works on readers, the possibility of those effects exists. Bettelheim's work, The Uses of Enchantment, discusses similar themes and he provides scientific support through his use of anecdotal evidence. Following his example, I have tried to include evidence from my own life that exemplifies the effect reading epic fantasy has had on me. The aspects of epic fantasy in relation to going through adolescence I examine include the concept of responsibility and its relation to progress and maturity; gaining a social identity; and reconciling oneself to the dark side within and without, in society. These aspects are found within the superstructure of the Hero Cycle and the actions and motivations of the characters—archetypes—within the cycle. They are also present in real life and necessary concepts to understand to be accepted into society as a mature contributor.

The inquiry of this essay is to examine the expression of evil in fantasy literature with a special focus on J.K. Rowlings’ Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s stone and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, but also C.S. Lewis’ Narnia the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and Narnia the Last Battle. The purpose is to illuminate different depictions of evil in the books and reflect what these depictions can tell us about evil in our contemporary context. With this essay I want to show how world views are present in fantasy literature with a special focus on the portrayal of evil and its significance for the understanding of the narrative. I mean that the understanding and depiction of evil is a universal problem and an existential issue of relevance to world views.

Abstract:
In this thesis, we tackle the problem of the writing of a world as a metaphorical weaving, taking an interest in the works of three authors of anglo-saxon’s Fantasy. J. R. R. Tolkien (The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion), C. S. Lewis (The Chronicles of Narnia) and J. K. Rowling (Harry Potter). Our analysis deals with the way the authors weave the world of subcreation, borrowing from mythology elements that they reinsert into their own mythology, mythological threads whom intertwining gives weight to the universe of Fantasy. The process of creation construction of a world, appears to be a complex activity which is not limited to the narrative aspect of a story, but rests upon various parameters, the superposition of multiple “lays of material” that has an incidence on the solidity of the finalized work. In our thesis, we evoke three aspects of this “several-scales” weaving : the mythological backdrop woven by the authors to give a setting to the fiction, the patterns of evil woven on this canvass, then the weaver figures, being represented within the text or being materialized under the form of the author himself

Abstract:
Just as memory pervades our everyday lives, it pervades the lives of the characters and readers of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series and Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. Acts of recall or recollection occur in almost every chapter as the characters in these novels devote much of the present to keeping in touch with some aspect of the past. Memory is integral to Harry Potter and His Dark Materials, highlighting the following problematic questions: Who are we and how do we relate to the past? How is what we wish for the future grounded in the past and the present? Memory is at the core of constructivism, the active construction of reality by the individual through the use of mental activity. In this thesis I maintain that the central protagonists in Harry Potter and His Dark Materials, Harry Potter and Lyra Belacqua, actively construct their "selves" from memories and narratives – their own and those of others – just as the novels' readers negotiate their own identities in the world outside of the novels. The constant recalling of the past to confirm and amply one's present creates a complex web of remembering and forgetting, assimilating and discarding, which we attempt to explicate through the use of culturally appropriate metaphors. The thesis comprises three chapters that correlate memory with genre, narrative, and technology respectively. I commence the thesis by exploring the idea of genre as collective memory. I position Harry Potter and His Dark Materials within the genre of heroic fantasy and examine how the monomyth provides readers with the memory triggers they require to decode the structure of these texts. The novels conform to and yet manipulate the preconceived patterns present in the heroic or "high" fantasy genre, where narrative, memory and identity are all linked by the desires of the stories' participants. Chapter Two applies Freud's concept of Nachtraglichkeit, which supposes the process of memory is one of incessant reconsideration or "retranslation", the reworking of memory traces in the light of later knowledge and experience. This conceptualisation of memory is compared to the common, but less productive, tendency to describe memory through objectifying metaphors, such as the idea that memory works analogously to a photograph. Chapter Three addresses how knowledge and experience in Harry Potter and His Dark Materials are furnished by prosthetic memory devices, such as photographs, the Pensieve, the alethiometer and the Amber Spyglass, “that permit us to transcend "raw" biological limits – for example, the limits on memory capacity or limits on our auditory range” (Bruner, Acts of Meaning 34). The novel's protagonists are then armed with these devices in trying to make sense of the landscapes they inhabit. Ultimately, we are all story-tellers (for better or for worse), weaving our self-narratives from material gleaned from the collective memories and prosthetic memory devices of the society we belong to, our own experiences, and the tales of others, trying to achieve the uniformity of consciousness and an awareness of the connection between the actions and events of the past, and the experience of the present, which are fundamental to a sense of individual identity.

My central thesis is that fantastic motifs work on a metaphorical level to encapsulate and express ideologies that have frequently been naturalised as 'truths'. I develop a theory of motif metaphors in order to examine the ideologies generated by the fantastic motif of metamorphosis in a range of contemporary children's and young adult fantasy texts. Although fantastic metamorphosis is an exceptionally prevalent and powerful motif in children's and young adult fantasy literature, symbolising important ideas about change and otherness in relation to childhood, adolescence, and maturation, and conveying important ideologies about the world in which we live, it has been little analysed in children's literature criticism. The detailed analyses of particular metamorphosis motif metaphors in this study expand and refine our academic understanding of the metamorphosis figure and consequently provide insight into the underlying principles and particular forms of a variety of significant ideologies.
By examining several principal metamorphosis motif metaphors I investigate how a number of specific cultural beliefs are constructed and represented in contemporary children's and young adult fantasy literature. I particularly focus upon metamorphosis as a metaphor for childhood otherness; adolescent hybridity and deviant development; maturation as a process of self-change and physical empowerment; racial and ethnic difference and otherness; and desire and jouissance. I apply a range of pertinent cultural theories to explore these motif metaphors fully, drawing on the interpretive frameworks most appropriate to the concepts under consideration. I thus employ general psychoanalytic theories of embodiment, development, language, subjectivity, projection, and abjection; poststructuralist, social constructionist, and sociological theories; and wide-ranging literary theories, philosophical theories, gender and feminist theories, race and ethnicity theories, developmental theories, and theories of fantasy and animality. The use of such theories allows for incisive explorations of the explicit and implicit ideologies metaphorically conveyed by the motif of metamorphosis in different fantasy texts.
In this study, I present a number of specific analyses that enhance our knowledge of the motif of fantastic metamorphosis and of significant cultural ideologies. In doing so, I provide a model for a new and precise approach to the analysis of fantasy literature.

Abstract:
Nyckelord: fan fiction, fantasylitteratur, Harry Potter, läsning, erfarenhetspedagogik, undervisning, litteraturdidaktik, F – 3

Abstract:
Adaptation has been a part of cinema since its very beginning. Since then, the number of film versions of literary works which appear on screen has never ceases to increase and adaptation is still at the heart of cinematic production around the world. Adaptation actually exists in a rather paradoxical situation. What motivates its conception is also the source of the majority of criticism against it. On one hand, the economic advantage is clear. The fame of a popular novel guarantees a large audience. On the other hand, its creative context can prove to be difficult since ontologically adaptation serves to preserve the traditional comparison based on an oppositional paradigm of the arts where the film has to justify itself in front of the source text. Standing at a crossroads between the arts, adaptation is the focus of a debate on a notional hierarchy within the arts where narration through images could still be perceived as inferior compared to other forms. We wanted to study this phenomenon within the context of the resurgence of fantasy witnessed in the 2000’s in this thesis. In the English-speaking world this cultural event reached an unexpected level with the success of the adaptations of J. R. R. Tolkien and J. K. Rowling’s novels while the film versions of C. S. Lewis’ works were less well received. With these points in mind, we consider the process and the product of adaptation in order to situate our corpus in the debate through a top down approach of comparison. We thus hope to bring some elements of reflections on the craze for these stories and the domain of adaptation studies

This work is a theoretical study about J.K. Rowling’s seven books and her famous character, the young wizard Harry Potter – the boy who survived. Based on a psychoanalytic approach, we try to understand the main psychodynamic motifs that can be found within the books, as well as how they can be engaged with the tremendous success of this boy’s adventures. Similarly to the playing children, the writer can create his own world away from reality and, through his work, he offers the reader a way for him to enjoy his fantasies without shame or guilt. With this paper we pretend to demonstrate how, by fiction, repressed unconscious contents can be evoked, at the same time we analyse the meaning of primary object relations.

Costa, Thais Gonçalves Pinheiro. "The wonderful wizard of Sintra: an illustrated fantasy novel." Master's thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.26/25136.

Full text
Abstract:
This project The Wonderful Wizard of Sintra aimed to elaborate an illustrated work of fiction based on the History of Portugal and, more precisely, on the architectural complex known as Quinta da Regaleira, located in Sintra. The story aspires to recover the most symbolical elements of the previously mentioned property, transporting them to a fantastic universe inspired by multiple literary works of fiction, especially by J. K. Rowling’s series of books that narrate the tale of the wizard Harry Potter. As it is further clarified in this document, it is possible to stablish a few parallels between Rowling’s work and Portuguese culture, since it is likely that the last served as a source of inspiration to the author. This way, this project was conceived with the intent of exploring this connexion, throughout the realisation of an illustrated book that could configure a prequel to the Harry Potter saga set in Portugal. The choice of Quinta da Regaleira as main stage in this narrative is related to its symbolical and enigmatic character, with a palace and gardens that present a visual language which evokes the universe of mythology, fairy tales and fantasy, in general. Still, though this narrative is essentially fictional, it articulates the historical events that happened around Quinta da Regaleira, its owner António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, Portugal and Europe during the beginning of the 20th century. Finally, we can say that through this project it was not only possible to create an illustrated book — and to apprehend all the learning resulting from this process — but also to conceive an object that could, in the future, enrich the imaginary that encircles Quinta da Regaleira, Portuguese heritage.

This is esplains why and how the Harry Potter series are so popular today. In the first chapter, I introduce my critical approaches to J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, Summarize the memoir of the author and discuss the author’s purpose, techniques, and limitations in these fantastic stories. In the second chapter, I summarize the stories in Rowling’s Harry Potter, analyze the plots and frameworks of the series, and define them as a kind of juvenile literature subject to supervision from parents. In the third chapter, I study the mentality of the major characters in the world of fantasy in terms of mythology and psychology. I classify the major caaracters into three groups based on their narrative function:1)personae of the imaginary world, including heroes of adventures, characters in conflicts, round and flat character;2)creatures of wonders, including the primary and the secondary ones;3)magical objects that constitute the world of fantasy. In the fourth chapter, I discuss Joseph Campbell’s theory of mythology, C.G.Jung’s and Jacque Lacan’s psychoanalyses so as to further illustrate the dualism, that is , the fighting between the id and the superego, in Harry Potter and other major character mentioned above. In the final chapter, I conclude that fantastic world in the Harry Potter series derives from J.K. Rowling’s creative imagination, it also makes us all dream of the world of wonders. That, I argue, is the reason why the Harry Potter series has become the most popular bestsellers ever published in the whole world today.

The purpose of the thesis aims to explore characteristics of fantasy literature and how Rowling constructs her world of fantasy with these traits in her Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Moreover, the researcher also conducts an empirical class to probe the effects of the application of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in junior high school English teaching as well as the attitudes and difficulties of junior high school students toward the literature course. This thesis is divided into six parts. In Chapter One, the introduction presents a survey of perspectives on the Harry Potter series, biographical background of J. K. Rowling, the reasons for literature as a teaching material, and the organization of the thesis. In Chapter Two, the definitions of fantasy, the roots and development of fantasy, the values of fantasy, and the characteristics of fantasy are dealt with. In general, fantasy includes five characteristics: time, space, magic, transformation and inhabitants. In Chapter Three, J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is analyzed with the above five characteristics. Moreover, Harry’s heroic quest and his inspiration to the readers are discussed. Chapter Four is analyses and the application of J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in junior high school English class. The reasons for choosing Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone as appropriate teaching materials, the language teaching approaches and their application in EFL literature instruction, instructional context and activities for teaching English fictional works, the teaching aids and reading skills are demonstrated first. Then the application of J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in junior high school English class, including the motivation, purposes, research questions, the significance, the course design and teachers’ opinions on the course, are presented. Chapter Five shows the results and discussions of the teaching application. First, the participants, the instruments and the data collection procedures are mentioned. Second, the responses in the students’ Pre-instructional Questionnaires and the Post-instructional Questionnaires are compared. Third, the results of students’ pretest and posttest are discussed. Fourth, the students’ learning journals and portfolios are analyzed. The final chapter summaries the major findings of the study, discusses the limitations of the present study and offers suggestions for further study.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to explore the importance of love in its various manifestations in the lives of the Harry Potter characters and its power to consequently influence the paths that they eventually choose to walk. Love is investigated as the reason behind the choice between good and evil as well as paradoxically both a fortifying as well as a destructive force. Furthermore, it attempts to examine the importance that love plays in the healthy or dysfunctional development of the characters. Numerous philosophies and theories that span two different eras will form the theoretical framework of this research paper. There will be a constant interplay between the theories and the main text, that is, the seven Harry Potter books that together represent the Harry Potter series. Additionally, the author‟s opinion acquired from invaluable fan interviews will be utilized in order to improve the understanding of the characters motivations. The introduction is a brief explanation of key terms and theories that are essential to the exploration of love in the Harry Potter series. The study comprises five chapters. The first three chapters are concerned with the three main manifestations of love represented in the series, namely; parental love, friendship and romance respectively. Chapter Four focuses on the adaptation of the novels into movies and the subsequent result that this has on the depiction of love. Chapter Five highlights the finding of the study conducted.

Justice, Sandra. Thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/12164.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the French translation of the 224 neologisms in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh book in J.K. Rowling’s fantasy series. By analyzing the original neologisms and their French equivalents, this research compares the word formation processes used by both the author and the translator, Jean-François Ménard. Additionally, to categorize Ménard’s translation techniques, this study adapts a framework designed by Jacqueline Henry to classify translations of word play. While Ménard uses the same types of word formation as Rowling to create his lexicon, this study reveals that he often chooses a different neological process or distinct lexemes to recreate the effect of the original neologism. To achieve this, Ménard relies on his own creativity and embraces the norms of the French language to give his audience a reading experience comparable to that offered to the readers of the original text.

Abstract:
Rowling, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking-Glass, Harry Potter.

Potter, Mary-Anne. "Arboreal thresholds - the liminal function of trees in twentieth-century fantasy narratives." Thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/25341.

Full text
Abstract:
Trees, as threshold beings, effectively blur the line between the real world and fantastical alternate worlds, and destabilise traditional binary classification systems that distinguish humanity, and Culture, from Nature. Though the presence of trees is often peripheral to the main narrative action, their representation is necessary within the fantasy trope. Their consistent inclusion within fantasy texts of the twentieth century demonstrates an enduring arboreal legacy that cannot be disregarded in its contemporary relevance, whether they are represented individually or in collective forests. The purpose of my dissertation is to conduct a study of various prominent fantasy texts of the twentieth century, including the fantasy works of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Robert Holdstock, Diana Wynne Jones, Natalie Babbitt, and J.K. Rowling. In scrutinising these texts, and drawing on insights offered by liminal, ecocritical, ecofeminist, mythological and psychological theorists, I identify the primary function of trees within fantasy narratives as liminal: what Victor Turner identifies as a ‘betwixt and between’ state (1991:95) where binaries are suspended in favour of embracing potentiality. This liminality is constituted by three central dimensions: the ecological, the mythological, and the psychological. Each dimension informs the relationship between the arboreal as grounded in reality, and represented in fantasy. Trees, as literary and cinematic arboreal totems are positioned within fantasy narratives in such a way as to emphasise an underlying call to bio-conservatorship, to enable a connection to a larger scope of cultural expectation, and to act as a means through which human self-awareness is developed.

The motivation of this research derives from the increasing importance of Harry Potter in recent years, as well as the critical role of film tourism in Harry Potter multicultural phenomenon. With a relevant review on Harry Potter, there are no domestic studies focused on its effect upon tourism from the perspective of tourism. Hence, Harry Potter related film tourism is chosen as a case study in this research. This study examines the tourism context from producing film attractions in the United Kingdom triggered by Harry Potter films, the travel intermediaries from Taiwan and the United Kingdom both constructed the fantasy gaze of Taiwanese tourists. In particular, the part of fantasy gaze focuses on that tourists slip between the actuality and virtuality in the Harry Potter attractions, and the locations function as liminal spaces. The most important is that the fantasy gaze can be attributed to the multiplicity of places. Documentary analysis and in-depth interviews are adopted, drawing upon theories of film tourism and semiotics, culture on display, hermeneutic circle, tourist gaze, and authenticity. This research is divided into four parts: Firstly, the fictitious story becomes three-dimensional and authentic by location shooting. Because of location shooting, a flat story can possess specific landscapes and a predecessor of attraction can be shaped. Second, based on the producing attractions in the United Kingdom, I explore the local attractions using Harry Potter markers turn the space into a talking environment, and make the actual attractions can lay out a virtual magic imagination. The magic displays have reshaped the local landscape and connected with imagination, sight, culture. Third, travel intermediaries in Taiwan and the United Kingdom contribute to social construction of the Harry Potter landmarks, attracting tourists to collect these landmarks, and furthermore the photos and blogs from tourists represent the landscape as well. Forth, when Taiwanese tourists visit Harry Potter attractions, they have special fantasy gaze and performances. In addition to gazing on the actual attractions, the virtual film scenes tend to emerge from tourist’s mind. They also mentally and bodily simulate the movie characters. By this way, tourists can get magic pleasure and fulfill their desire. Although Harry Potter stories and tourism base on a virtual context, tourists are still willing to accept and believe this story. Nothing is real except what the tourists believe. Through the actual tourist experience and magic display, authenticity can exist in the Harry Potter tour.
