Abstract:
A novel hemodynamic model has been recently introduced, which provides analytical relationships between the changes in cerebral blood volume (CBV), cerebral blood flow (CBF), and cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen ( CMRO 2), and associated changes in the tissue concentrations of oxy- and deoxy-hemoglobin (ΔO and ΔD) measured with near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) [S. Fantini, Neuroimage85, 202–221 (2014)]. This novel model can be applied to measurements of the amplitude and phase of induced hemodynamic oscillations as a function of the frequency of oscillation, realizing the novel technique of coherent hemodynamics spectroscopy (CHS) [S. Fantini, Neuroimage85, 202–221 (2014); M. L. Pierro et al., Neuroimage85, 222–233 (2014)]. In a previous work, we have demonstrated an in vivo application of CHS on human subjects during paced breathing [M. L. Pierro et al., Neuroimage85, 222–233 (2014)]. In this work, we present a new analysis of the collected data during paced breathing based on a slightly revised formulation of the hemodynamic model and an efficient fitting procedure. While we have initially treated all 12 model parameters as independent, we have found that, in this new implementation of CHS, the number of independent parameters is eight. In this article, we identify the eight independent model parameters and we show that our previous results are consistent with the new formulation, once the individual parameters of the earlier analysis are combined into the new set of independent parameters.

Abstract:
This study investigated relationships between cross-cultural competence, social support, and international students’ psychological adjustment. Participants included 94 international students studying in the United States. The researchers conducted a series of standard multiple regression analysis to predict autonomy and environmental mastery as measured by the Ryff Scales of Psychological Well-Being (Ryff & Keyes, 1995). They found significant positive relationships between autonomy and cross-cultural competence as measured by the Intercultural Competence Scale (ICCS; Fantini & Tirmizi, 2006), and environmental mastery and social support as measured by the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS; Zimet, Dahlem, Zimet, & Farely, 1988). A significant negative relationship was also found between length of residency in the host country, autonomy, and environmental mastery.

Abstract:

Abstract:
ABSTRACTMost studies of child bilingualism (Döpke, 1992; Fantini, 1985; Genishi, 1999; Gumperz, 1977, 1982; McClure, 1977; Myers-Scotton, 1993a; Romaine, 1994) concern children raised in a bilingual language community. The present study concerns a four-year-old child in an English-speaking community raised in an environment where his mother only spoke French to him. Two questions were raised: Can a child raised by a non-native parent produce situational code-switching triggered by topic changes? Are there additional topics or roles to add to the previous literature that trigger a young English-French bilingual child to code-switch? The data in this study showed that the child produced situational code-switching. Two novel hypotheses for code-switching were also found: leadership and expression of emotions and sensations. This case-study is important for the field of code-switching in the environment of a non-native parent raising a child in a second language.

Abstract:
<p>Acculturation attitudes, referred to as “sojourner reactions to adaptation into new language and cultural communities” (Culhane, 2004: 51), can be a predictor of translators’ level of intercultural competence during educational sojourns. Intercultural competence, defined as a “complex of abilities needed to perform effectively and appropriately when interacting with others who are linguistically and culturally different from oneself” (Fantini 2006: 12), can accordingly be a predictor of translation quality. To assess the actual relationship between acculturation attitude and quality of translation of culture-bound texts, the current study was conducted on 82 Iranian postgraduate students of Master of English translation at universities in England. The East Asian Acculturation Measure (EAAM), developed by Berry (2001), was adapted to assess translation students’ level of acculturation attitudes toward English culture. Some news excerpts adopted from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) were also selected to assess the quality of translation of culture-bound texts. The analysis of Spearman rank order correlation (rho) revealed the significant positive relationship between acculturation attitude and quality of translation of culture-bound texts. The pedagogical implications of the findings suggested encouraging and providing language learners with opportunities to assimilate or integrate into the host country culture to be able to develop their intercultural competence to an optimal level.</p>

Abstract:
We have previously shown that the mono [125I]iodinated vasoactive intestinal peptide (125I-VIP) could be covalently cross-linked on intact colonic adenocarcinoma cells (HT29). A major Mr 67,000 and a minor Mr 120,000 cross-linked polypeptides have been characterized [Muller, Luis, Fantini, Abadie, Giannellini, Marvaldi & Pichon (1985) Eur. J. Biochem. 151, 411-417]. The glycoprotein nature of these species was investigated using endo-beta-acetylglucosaminidase F (Endo F) treatment, enzymic and chemical desialylation and wheat germ agglutinin (WGA)-Sepharose affinity chromatography. Affinity-labelled VIP-binding proteins solubilized by Nonidet P-40 bound to WGA-Sepharose and could be eluted specifically with N-acetyl-D-glucosamine. Treatment with Endo F resulted in an increased electrophoretic mobility of both polypeptides. The major and the minor VIP-binding proteins were converted respectively into Mr 47,000 and 100,000 species, indicating removal of 20 kDa of N-linked oligosaccharides. Deglycosylation with trifluoromethanesulphonic acid also led to a 20 kDa loss in mass of the Mr 67,000 component, indicating the absence of additional O-linked sugars on this polypeptide. The presence of sialic acid on the major VIP-binding protein was demonstrated after treatment of intact cells with neuraminidase or by chemical desialylation with hydrochloric acid. We conclude from this study that the VIP receptor from intact HT29-D4 cells is a glycoprotein with N-linked oligosaccharide side chains containing sialic acid.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The coastal fisheries in Liberia comprise small-scale Kru and Fanti low technology canoes and open boats, as well as industrial trawlers. At the end of the war in 2003, foreign industrial trawlers dominated the coastal fisheries in Liberia. After the war, the industrial fleet declined rapidly from 60 in 2004 to 15 in 2010. Over the same period the local Kru canoes grew from <400 to over 2400 and the motorized Fanti boats increased from <200 to about 800. Since 2010, when the government established a six nautical mile inshore exclusion zone, the industrial fleet has continued to decline, the Fantis have remained fairly constant, but the Kru fleet has continued to expand, reaching 3800 canoes by 2019. This paper analyzes the technical efficiency and productivity of the SSF fleets in Liberia. Data were collected from 46 randomly chosen Kru and 86 Fanti boats. There is a considerable difference between the Kru and the Fanti boats in terms of quantities of inputs used and output produced. Mean efficiency of the Kru canoes was 0.53, while for the Fanti boats it was 0.70, indicating considerable inefficiencies and scope for technical improvement. Vessel length and skipper’s age are the two main factors significantly influencing technical efficiency of the Kru and Fanti boats. The younger Kru operators (≤40 years) using newer and smaller dugout canoes (≤6.1 m) were more efficient than the older fishers in older and larger canoes, while the opposite was true for the Fantis. There were efficient boats and inefficient vessels among the Kru and Fanti but on average they were profitable. However, the design of these vessels offers limited scope to introduce improved fishing technology. To address the current technological regress and increase productivity in the fisheries, it is recommended that the Liberian government explore new harvesting technologies such as fiberglass reinforced plastic in the coastal fisheries.

Abstract:
A recently proposed analytical hemodynamic model1 [S. Fantini, NeuroImage85, 202–221 (2014)] is able to predict the changes of oxy, deoxy, and total hemoglobin concentrations (model outputs) given arbitrary changes in blood flow, blood volume, and rate of oxygen consumption (model inputs). One assumption of this model is that the capillary compartment is characterized by a single blood transit time. In this work, we have extended the original model by considering a distribution of capillary transit times and we have compared the outputs of both models (original and extended) for the case of sinusoidal input signals at different frequencies, which realizes the new technique of coherent hemodynamics spectroscopy (CHS). For the calculations with the original model, we have used the mean value of the distribution of capillary transit times considered in the extended model. We have found that, for distributions of capillary transit times having mean values around 1 s and a standard deviation less than about 45% of the mean value, the original and extended models yield the same CHS spectra (i.e., model outputs versus frequency of oscillation) within typical experimental errors. For wider capillary transit time distributions, the two models yield different CHS spectra. By assuming that Poiseuille's law is valid in the capillary compartment, we have related the distribution of capillary transit times to the distributions of capillary lengths and capillary speed of blood flow to calculate the average capillary and venous saturations. We have found that, for standard deviations of the capillary transit time distribution that are less than about 80% of the mean value, the average capillary saturation is always larger than the venous saturation. By contrast, the average capillary saturation may be less than the venous saturation for wider distributions of the capillary transit times.

"Phase 1 with expansion cohorts in a study of NEO-201 in adults with chemo-resistant solid tumors." Abstract:
TPS2645 Background: NEO-201 is a novel humanized IgG1 monoclonal antibody (mAb) generated against the Hollinshead allogenic colorectal cancer vaccine platform. Briefly, tumor-associated antigens (TAA) derived from tumor membrane fractions pooled from colorectal cancer surgical specimens were screened for delayed-type hypersensitivity and evaluated in clinical trials. The original vaccine was used to generate monoclonal antibodies, one of which is NEO-201. In preclinical data generated in our laboratory, we have demonstrated that NEO-201 exert anti-tumor activity by natural killer (NK)-mediated antibody-dependent cytotoxicity (ADCC) against several tumor type including colorectal and pancreatic cancer models (Fantini, et al. 2018). We have identified NEO-201 antigen as a glycosylated form of CEACAM-5 and -6, which is expressed by tumor tissue but is not present in the surrounding healthy tissue (David, et al. 2018). This could result in a specific anti-tumor activity without significant normal tissue toxicity. Nevertheless, toxicity was further assessed in non-human primates and transient neutropenia was the only adverse event observed. Based on this data we designed a first in human phase I trial to evaluate the safety, maximum-tolerated dose (MTD), pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) of the humanized monoclonal antibody NEO-201. Methods: This is a first-in-human phase 1 study with expansion cohort to determine the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) and recommended phase II dose (RP2D) of NEO-201 in adults with advanced solid tumors that have high likelihood pof expression NEO201 antigen and have progressed to standard of treatments and have a PS0-2 ECOG. Study design is a classic Fibonacci (3+3) dose escalation, with a cohort expansion at the MTD. NEO-201 is administered intravenously every two weeks, and four different dose levels will be explored (DL1 = 1mg/kg, DL2 = 2mg/kg, DL3 = 4mg/kg and DL4 = 6mg/kg). No intra-patient dose escalation is allowed. Patients will be evaluated for safety every two weeks, with weekly laboratory testing, according to CTCAEv4.0. and with a DLT window of 28 days (cycle 1). Response will be assessed every 8 weeks (2 cycles of treatment) according to RECISTv1.1. Additionally, biological samples will be collected to understand NEO-201 pharmacokinetic, the effect on the immune process and their correlation with treatment toxicity and response. As of February 2019 we have completed enrollment in the first DL and are evaluating for DLT. Clinical trial information: NCT03476681.
