Abstract:
The study of 23 excrements of Far Eastern skinks collected on the Kunashir Island revealed 75 species of invertebrates that served for the skinks as a food source. Coleopteran (41 taxa from 14 families) were most diverse, which is explained by the good preservation of chitin of beetles during passage through the digestive tract of lizards. The crickets Dianemobius fascipes nigrofasciatus (Matsumura, 1904) (96 specimens), caddisflies (Trichoptera indet. 2, 36 specimens), and barkflies (Psocoptera indet., 19 specimens) prevailed in number of identified specimens in the samples.

Abstract:
The article provides an analysis of the mobilization strategies of far-right movements from the Czech Republic and Germany based on the content they provide via hyperlinks on their websites. Vertical and reticular characteristics of the hyperlinked pages have been analyzed, two aspects which form central parts of the mobilization strategies of social movements. The vertical level refers to territorial relations, while the reticular level refers to relations with other actors. The analyses confirmed that the movements focused on the vertical level to their countries of origin. With respect to reticular characteristics the type of hyperlinked content neither differs significantly throughout countries, nor throughout segments of the far-right movement. Additionally, the analysis of the type of hyperlinked content provides insight into the general mobilization strategies employed.

Thomson, Amanda Mary. "A modelling approach to farm management and vegetation degradation in pre-modern Iceland." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/23.

Full text
Abstract:
Grazing by domestic livestock is one of the primary ways by which humans have modified landscapes. At low stocking rates livestock grazing can modify vegetation community composition, but at high stocking rates grazing can also reduce vegetation productivity and initiate soil erosion, leading to land degradation. The country of Iceland has undergone severe land degradation over the past 1100 years, with over half of the former vegetation cover being lost, and the remainder having depleted productivity. This work focuses upon the role that grazing by domestic livestock played in this degradation, and how the interactions between farm management, vegetation cover and climate affected grazing patterns in space and time. The aims of the research were achieved by constructing an environmental simulation model, called Búmodel, which allowed a cross-disciplinary approach that integrated landscape ecology, environmental archaeology and historical analysis. Búmodel was loosely coupled with GIS so that spatially based model inputs and outputs could be displayed and analysed in map form. The purpose of Búmodel was to predict spatial and temporal patterns of vegetation biomass production and utilisation (through grazing and hay-making) with a view to commenting on vegetation degradation in the pre-modern period (pre-1900 AD). The model was parameterised using contemporary and historical Icelandic agricultural data. Model validation was undertaken using sensitivity tests and comparison with data from an independent grazing experiment in the north of Iceland. Búmodel was then applied to two contrasting study areas: Vestur- Eyjafjallahreppur, a farming community on the south coast of Iceland, and Hofstaðir, a farm estate in the north east of the country, situated inland by Lake Mývatn. These applications demonstrated the importance of farm management in avoiding land degradation and in ameliorating the impact of climate. They also established the usefulness of Búmodel as a tool for the investigation of human and environmental interactions in Iceland.

Mirza, Majd A. I. "The role of fibroblast growth factor-23 in chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder." Doctoral thesis, Uppsala universitet, Medicin, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-130339.

Full text
Abstract:
Fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23) was initially identified as the causative factor of autosomal dominant hypophosphatemic rickets. Further studies confirmed that FGF23 is predominantly expressed in the osteocytes and osteoblasts of bone and that circulating FGF23 acts on the kidney to inhibit renal phosphate reabsorption and 1,25(OH)2D3 hydroxylation. With the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD), the kidneys become insufficient to maintain a normal systemic mineral homeostasis, resulting in various abnormalities of bone and mineral metabolism, generally referred to as Chronic Kidney Disease – Mineral and Bone Disorders (CKD-MBD). FGF23 increases early in the course of CKD in order to maintain normal serum phosphate levels; long before a significant increase in serum phosphate can be detected. Recent studies suggest that increased FGF23 levels are associated with progression of CKD, mortality, and the development of refractory secondary hyperparathyroidism. Because FGF23 is the very earliest marker of CKD-MBD, it is of particular interest to evaluate the relation between FGF23 and CKD-MBD abnormalities, in the setting of early CKD and also in individuals with normal renal function. In the present work, we show that FGF23 is linked to several dynamic measurements of vascular function, including endothelial dysfunction, arterial stiffness, and atherosclerosis. FGF23 is also positively associated with left ventricular mass index and an increased risk of having left ventricular hypertrophy. All associations were independent of serum phosphate and were strengthened in subjects with diminished renal function. Furthermore, we found significant evidence for an association between higher FGF23 and increased fat mass and dyslipidemia, which could represent a novel pathway linking FGF23 to cardiovascular disease. Finally, we show that FGF23 is a significant predictor of future fracture risk. Although these associations could be reflecting the increased risk associated with hyperphosphatemia and calcitriol deficiency, current evidence points towards FGF23 being more than an innocent bystander. At the very least, FGF23 holds promise of being a bio-marker of cardiovascular status and phosphate-related toxicity both in CKD and in the general population, and might be a therapeutic target that could improve the fatal prognosis in CKD patients.

Abstract:
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most frequent inflammatory rheumatism. Passive immunotherapies used for the treatment of RA, mainly target the main pro-inflammatory cytokines in RA. These therapies are efficient but possess many drawbacks (cost, loss of efficacy, infections, and cancers), which lives some room for the development of a strategy by anti-cytokine vaccination. Our work was organized into three axes: - Specifically target the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukine-23 through vaccination and look for the mechanisms implied in the arthritis decrease. - Target the pathological angiogenesis through a peptide-based anti-VEGF vaccination. - Study feasibility and safety of the anti-TNF vaccination when it is coadministered with immunosuppressive drugs. Our results showed that even of arthritis inhibition is partial, vaccination against IL-23 or VEGF can modulate arthritis at the clinical level while distinctly decreasing inflammation and osteo-articular destruction at the histological level. Additionally, the combined use of immunosuppressive drug with an anti-TNF vaccin does not decrease its efficiency. To finish, it is interresting to note that use an elevated dose of cyclophosphamide neutralize the vaccin’s action. So we show that VEGF and IL-23 are potential therapeutic targets in arthritis and that vaccination is compatible with maintenance of disease-modifying drugs as immunosuppressive drugs

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter provides a checklist for the family Eulophidae. It provides information on species diversity, host records, distribution records by province in Iran, as well as world distribution. Comparison of the eulophid fauna of Iran with adjacent countries indicates that the faunas of Russia (666 species) and Turkey (246 species) are more diverse than Iran (236 species), followed by Turkmenistan (70 species), Kazakhstan (57 species), Pakistan (44 species), Azerbaijan (34 species), United Arab Emirates (31 species), Armenia (23 species), Iraq (10 species), Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia (both with eight species) and Oman (six species); no species have so far been reported from Bahrain, Kuwait or Qatar. The much larger number of eulophid species reported from Russia likely correlates with not only its large land area but also its history of taxonomic research on Eulophidae in the country. Russia shares 147 known species with Iran, followed by Turkey (133 species), Azerbaijan (22 species), Turkmenistan (21 species), Armenia and Pakistan (both with 20 species), United Arab Emirates (13 species), Iraq (10 species), Afghanistan (seven species), Saudi Arabia (four species) and Oman (two species).

Abstract:
Experiments have been performed to investigate interactions between a loaded stator and transonic rotor. The Blade Row Interaction (BRI) rig is used to simulate an embedded transonic fan stage with realistic geometry (thin trailing edge) which produces a wake through diffusion. Details of the unsteady flow field between the stator and rotor were obtained using PIV. Flow-visualization images and PIV data that facilitate analysis of vortex shedding, wake motion, and wake-shock-interaction phenomena are presented. Stator wake and rotor-bow-shock interactions are analyzed for three stator/rotor axial spacings, and two stator loadings. Specific shed vortices and wake topological features are isolated for each configuration. The data analysis focuses on measuring the vortex size, strength, and location as it forms on the stator trailing edge and propagates downstream into the rotor passage. It was observed that vortex shedding is synchronized to the passing of a rotor bow shock. Results show that the circulation of a vortex increased by 19 to 23% from far to close spacing due to the increased strength of the rotor bow shock impacting the stator trailing edge. Reduction in stator loading decreased shed vortex circulation for the same stator/rotor axial spacing by 20 to 25%. Pitchwise radius of vortices also decreased by 13 to 19% from far to close spacing. Such changes in vortex size and strength should be accounted for to predict the effect of unsteady blade-row interactions on transonic compressor performance.

Abstract:
Optimizing resource distribution in datacenters can achieve several economic benefits, including increasing energy efficiency, better workload performance, and higher levels of job acceptance. Although some studies propose strategies that increase resource utilization whilst meeting a certain QoS, there is a perspective yet to be exploited: the Service Level Agreements (SLA) amortization. We believe that keeping service levels far above the minimum agreed is a missed opportunity to apply more aggressive strategies to reduce allocated resource fragmentation and increase even further the benefits mentioned above. In this work, we propose a novel server rebalancing strategy based on economic systems, able to capitalize from the SLAs by keeping the harmony between the aggressive competition of Free Markets and the safe control of Regulated Markets. The proposed strategy is evaluated with a modified version of CloudSim Plus simulator. The outcomes show that the SLA exploitation strategy led to an economy of 8.6% up to 23% for different mechanism configuration.
