This thesis examines the collision induced, far-infrared absorption of homonuclear diatomic molecules. These molecular processes are relevant in the astrophysical environments of planetary atmospheres and galactic molecular clouds, and a brief survey of far-infrared measurements of these regions is presented. The far-infrared powder absorption spectra from 20-250 cm⁻¹ have been examined in a series of six protonated and deuterated (TMTSF)₂X compounds, with X=PF₆, AsF₆ and SbF₆ (octahedral anions) and X=BF₄, ClO₄ and ReO₄ (tetrahedral anions) as a function of temperature from 10K to 290K . The octahedral-anion spectra are all very similar, having 4 sharp resonances which have been attributed to three lattice modes and one internal mode. The far-infrared absorption spectrum of normal hydrogen gas has been measured from 20-320 cm' (A=500-31 pm), over the temperature range 21-38 K, and the pressure range0.6-3 atmospheres. The spectra cover the very weak and broad collision-induced translational absorption band of 112 which at these low temperatures is observed well isolated from the 112 rotational lines. Translational absorption occurs when two molecules collide and absorb a photon via a transient induced dipole moment.
