Less than two months after moving from Philadelphia to New York, Poe, Virginia, and Maria Clemm moved in with the Brennan family in their farmhouse near present-day Amsterdam Avenue and Eighty-fourth Street, about five miles north of the densely populated portion of the city During this productive period of Poe’s career, he seems to have been more than usually obsessed with the perils of the magazine publishing world and his place in it. His letters and published writing reveal that he felt isolated, reflecting a frustration with his current situation while pointing the way toward the high-profile literary life he sought. “The Raven,” which he completed and published during this time, was the vehicle to greater renown; as an attention-grabbing tour de force about interior experience, it also mirrors the productive tension Poe found between the publishing hub of lower Manhattan and the seclusion of Brennan Farm.

The profession faces a recruitment and retention problem, whilst at the same time increasing numbers of students aren't selecting careers within farm animal practice. Recent research from universities and the student Farm Animal Veterinary Society have considered causes and barriers. More recent movements by several farm vets and veterinary associations have sought to highlight farm vets without ‘traditional’ farm vet backgrounds. This article considers the FAVS report ( Owen, 2023 ) alongside other literature and research into potential barriers to students entering farm animal practice, whilst the panel discussions provides the views of experienced veterinary surgeons working in the farm sector as to what practitioners, and the wider profession can do to increase the number of students considering and choosing careers in farm animal practice.

There is increasing recognition that farm animal welfare standards should ensure positive welfare, as well as prevent negative welfare. Resources that are valued by an animal and that provide opportunities to engage in motivated behaviours can elicit positive physical and emotional states and therefore positive welfare and a “good life” for farmed animals. Evaluation of resource provision is considered the best way of assessing positive welfare at present, in the absence of validated and practical animal-based measures. Previous research has outlined a framework of three tiers of increasingly positive welfare (Welfare +, Welfare ++, Welfare +++) containing resources that incrementally increase the opportunities for a good life over and above the requirements of UK law and code of practice. Based on this blueprint, “Good Life Frameworks” were developed for beef cattle, broiler chickens and pigs, containing resources that increase good life opportunities according to the scientific literature and expert consultation. We describe the initial development of these frameworks, including a piloting exercise with the UK farm assurance industry, to further refine the frameworks according to auditor and farmer feedback, and test the frameworks as a method of on-farm assessment and assurance of a “good life” for farm animals.

The purpose of this descriptive study was to co-create oral histories of Midwestern farm widows. Rural widows constitute a vulnerable population due to issues of bereavement and depression compounded by emotional and geographical isolation. A farm widow is often forced to maintain viability of the farm for the family’s livelihood. Oral history interviews with nine Midwest farm widows were conducted and analyzed. Three overarching themes emerged: competence, industriousness, and inner strength. Women shared stories of overcoming insurmountable obstacles. This study contributes to the literature on grief and expanding inner strength among rural widows. Further research could inform theory related to inner strength following a challenging life event.

The Animal Farm attempts at representing a realistic analysis of the revolution and changing of systems and regimes. However, change may not be necessarily a positive one as long as there is not a just and fair system upon which the sons of the revolutions depend. As history has proved, the majority of revolutions fail to achieve the utopian goals they had been seeking. Then, it fails to achieve the goals that are sought from it. Eventually, the reality becomes worse than that which it aimed to change. Since the theme of this novel is applicable for all people in any place at any time, and the big role that political discourse played in its event, we have chosen it to be our subject to analyze and discuss in our graduation project. After this short abstract, we will present an introduction in which we show the author’s contribution in the world of literature, his famous works and their significance. After that, we move on to deal with the language and discourse, rhetoric speech and discourse of Orwel and his ideology. The we tend to cover the author’s life, political discourse, and finally the political discourse of the author in The Animal Farm. We end our paper with a conclusion which includes our points of view to the importance of the political discourse in the novel and the moral lessons the mankind can draw out from such great piece of literature.

Thesis (MA (English))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis proposes a detailed study of the novel Agaat by South African author Marlene
van Niekerk (first published 2004). A particular focus throughout is on constructions of
identity and subjectivity, and the novel is considered as writing within and against both
the Realist tradition as well as the South African genre of the plaasroman and/or farm
novel. The translation of the novel into English by Michiel Heyns (published 2006) is
used as primary text, which furthermore raises questions of language and interpretation
already implicit in the narrative, questions which provide a compelling filter for reading
the novel in its entirety.
In the Introduction, I briefly delineate the novel’s storyline. This serves to introduce the
novel’s thematic concerns and outlines the linguistic complexities which emerge as a
result of the novel’s structure. An exposition on Realism in the novel follows, where I
suggest how a consideration of the Realist tradition might be useful in exploring the
mimetic effect in Agaat. Next the appearance and history of the plaasroman and farm
novel in South African literature is considered.
In Chapter One, the novel’s structural elements are examined in greater detail, through a
close analysis of the five different narrative voices of the novel. I suggest that the novel is
an elaborate study of identity and subjectivity which simultaneously uproots questions of
voice and authorship. While the subject matter of the novel and the attention to details of
farming and the physical environment makes it seem a near-historical record and places
Agaat within the genre of the plaasroman, the effect of the different voices of the novel is
to undercut fundamentally any stable narrative authority.
Agaat is nevertheless an incredible compendium of the nitty-gritty of life. In Chapter
Two I explore the manner in which the body and the self are located within a very
particular landscape and setting. How and for what purpose is subjectivity and identity
refracted and articulated through metaphors of space and the experiences of place? In the course of a close reading of the novel, I draw on broadly post-structuralist conceptions of
language, as well as South African critics’ writing on the genre of the plaasroman.
The third and final chapter examines the novel Agaat in translation. Agaat is a deeply
literary novel, drawing on a remarkably wide lexicon of cultural references, suffused with
questions of interpretation and a compelling and complex inquiry of language. The
English translation by Michiel Heyns remains a novel of and about Afrikaans. Quite how
this is achieved raises questions of translation pertaining both to the ‘postcolonial’, if one
reads South Africa as such, and to the specifically local. To this end, a brief context to
translation and language politics within the ‘postcolonial’ and South Africa is considered,
before engaging in a closer examination of the techniques by which Agaat was translated
from Afrikaans into English. I conclude with remarks regarding the success of the
translation into English and suggest that the translation is masterful but that its most
striking characteristics depend on a local South African reader.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie tesis behels ‘n noukeurige studie van die roman Agaat (2004) deur die Suid-
Afrikaanse skrywer Marlene van Niekerk. Die klem val deurgaans op die konstruksie van
identiteit en subjektwiteit, en die roman word beskou as ‘n reaksie teen, maar ook ‘n
uitbouing van die tradisies van Realisme en die Suid-Afrikaanse plaasroman/“farm
novel”. Die primêre teks vir hierdie ondersoek is Michiel Heyns se Engelse vertaling van
die roman (2006), wat verdere vrae rondom taal en interpretasie laat ontstaan. Sodanige
vrae is alreeds implisiet in die narratief gesetel en verskaf ‘n indringende lens waardeur
die roman in sy geheel gelees kan word.
In die Inleiding gee ek ‘n kort oorsig van die verhaalloop, wat ook dien as ‘n
bekendstelling van die roman se temas en die linguistieke kompleksiteite wat ontstaan as
‘n gevolg van die roman se struktuur. ‘n Beskrywing van Realisme in die roman volg,
waarin ek suggereer dat ‘n beskouing van die tradisie van Realisme nuttig kan wees vir ‘n verkenning van die mimetiese effek in Agaat. Volgende word die verskyning en
geskiedenis van die plaasroman en “farm novel” in Suid-Afrikaanse literatuur bekyk.
In Hoofstuk Een word die strukturele elemente van die roman in groter detail beskou deur
middel van ‘n noukeurige analise van die vyf verskillende narratiewe stemme in die
roman. Ek stel voor dat die roman ‘n verwikkelde studie van identiteit en subjektwiteit is,
wat terselfdetyd ook sekere vrae rondom stem en outeurskap ontbloot. Die onderwerp
van die roman en die aandag wat dit skenk aan noukeurige beskrywings van boerdery en
die landelike omgewing skep die indruk van ‘n historiese rekord en situeer Agaat in die
genre van die plaasroman, maar die effek van die verskillende stemme is dat enige
stabiele narratiewe outoriteit op deurslaggewende wyse ondermyn word.
Desondanks bly Agaat ‘n indrukwekkende kompendium van die materiële aspekte van
die lewe. In Hoofstuk Twee verken ek die manier waarop die liggaam en die self gesetel

literêre roman. Dit betrek ‘n merkwaardige verskeidenheid kulturele verwysings en is
deurspek met vrae rondom interpretasie en ‘n indringende en komplekse ondersoek na die
aard van taal. Michiel Heyns se Engelse vertaling bly ‘n roman oor Afrikaans. Presies
hoe dít bewerkstellig word opper sekere vrae oor vertaling wat verwys na die
“postkoloniale”, as mens Suid-Afrika in hierdie lig sou beskou, en ook na die spesifiek
plaaslike. Daarom word ‘n opsommende konteks van vertaling en taalpolitiek in die
“postkoloniale” en in Suid-Afrika belig, voordat die tegniek waardeur Agaat van
Afrikaans na Engels vertaal is, van naderby bekyk word. Ek sluit af met opmerkings oor
die sukses van die vertaling na Engels en stel voor dat die vertaling meesterlik is, maar
dat die mees treffende aspekte daarvan ‘n plaaslike, Suid-Afrikaanse leser vereis.

This thesis traces Huxley’s abiding preoccupation with mysticism, from his first collection of poetry to his final novel Island (1962). The function of mystics, Huxley argues in Grey Eminence (1941), is to dispel the ignorance of our benighted world by letting in the light of ultimate Reality. A world without mystics, he writes, would be ‘totally blind and insane’, and he laments that at present ‘[w]e are dangerously far advanced into the darkness’. Chapter 1 examines the influence of mysticism on Huxley’s early work. Several of his poems betray a mystical yearning; Gumbril is tantalised by intimations of the divine Ground; however, it was not until Those Barren Leaves (1925) that Huxley created a character who actively investigates ultimate Reality. Huxley’s disenchantment with mysticism has traditionally been ascribed to the influence of D.H. Lawrence, but the supposedly Lawrentian doctrine of life-worship that Huxley advocated was essentially humanist, whereas for Lawrence life was a metaphysical force. Chapter 2 analyses what it was that Huxley responded to in Lawrence, and the extent to which life-worship actually conforms to Lawrence’s ideas. Chapter 3 examines Huxley’s transition from intellectual elitism in the 1920s to his re-engagement with mysticism in the mid thirties. As a result of his friendship with Gerald Heard, Huxley joined the Peace Pledge Union, and it was a pacifist lecture tour that catalysed Huxley’s emigration to America in 1937. In California, Huxley grew exasperated with Heard and increasingly turned to Jiddu Krishnamurti for spiritual advice. Chapter 4 assesses the influence of these ‘problematic gurus’. The final chapter examines the treatment of sex in Huxley’s work, from the disillusioned romantics of his early fiction, to the reformed libertines who embrace celibacy in an attempt to lead a more spiritual life, to the inhabitants of Pala, for whom sex is a sacrament.

The purpose of this study is to look at the relationship between life satisfaction and farm involvement among dairy farm men and women in Utah. Farm involvement is defined as farm tasks, decision making, and participation in farm organizations. A sample of 116 couples were drawn from five counties in Utah. The husbands and wives were each interviewed separately. The sample is representative of the dairy farms in these five counties. However, the results of this study cannot be generalized to other types of farms in Utah or dairy farms from other locations.
The correlation between life satisfaction and farm tasks, decision-making patterns, and participation in farm organizations was computed separately for the men and the women. Next, a correlation between life satisfaction and farm tasks, decision-making patterns, and participation in farm organizations was computed for men and women separately based on three farm sizes: small with 50 or fewer milk cows, medium with 51 to 150 milk cows, and large with over 150 milk cows.
The independent variable, farm tasks, was divided into four catagories: farm work, running errands, bookkeeping, and supervising farm workers. The independent variable, decision - making patterns, was divided into two catagories: farm decisions and home decisions. The correlation between life satisfaction and participation in farm organizations was statistically significant for dairy farm men overall ( r=-. 24, p=.008) and also for men from small farms (r=-.37 p=.006) . A negative correlation on this variable is interpreted as more participation. The correlation between life satisfaction and bookkeeping for women from small farms was statistically significant (r=-.28, p=.043) . The correlation between life satisfaction and farm decisions for women from small farms was statistically significant (r=.31, p=.024). The correlation between life satisfaction and home decisions for women from small farms was statistically significant (r=-.41, p=.OO1).
Future research should explore in more detail the relationship between life satisfaction and membership in farm organizations and the use of these organizations.

My Daddy's Farm is a work of fiction about Clement J. Jones, a man, my great-grandfather, who committed suicide on November 19, 1924. In the early nineteen-twenties, this family man was a well respected, wealthy citizen of his county who--like one-third of his peers--had an active membership in the Indiana Ku Klux Klan. The story is narrated in part by a slightly sympathetic omniscient narrator, but mainly by Hazel Louise Jones, his daughter, who was in her teens when the Klan swept across Indiana in the nineteen-twenties; she was sixteen when her father committed suicide on November 19th, 1924.I have used three variations in this writing, based loosely on the style Gloria Naylor uses in Mama Day. These variations are characterized by the titles of their respective sections: "Our Spring," "Our Farm," "Our Family," and "Our Shame" are all narrated in first person, past tense, by Hazel Jones, Clement's sixteen year old daughter who is speaking as a representative of her family; "Clement J. Jones" and "Hazel Louise Jones" are written in third person, limited omniscient narration; and, "To Margaret," and "To Daddy" sections are present tense, with second person narration from Hazel Jones. Starting with "Our Shame," the story is punctuated by "Document" selections posted at the close of each chapter. These documents are nonfiction: they are news articles taken directly from the Indianapolis Star, the Williamsport Review-Republican, and the Williamsport Pioneer dated 1922, 1923, and 1924; and, they are papers taken out of the "United Klans of America" collection located in the Archives and Special Collections department of Bracken Library, Ball State University.Among sources listed on page 71 of this document, there are a few that were most helpful in providing details about the Indiana Klan: Anti Movements in America, edited by Gerald N. Grob, which reprints "Papers Read at the Meeting of Grand Dragons Knights of the Ku Klux Klan at their First Annual Meeting held at Asheville, North Carolina, July 1923"; and Women of the Klan, by Kathleen M. Blee. Exceptionally helpful was William Lutholtz's Grand Dragon, a well researched work of non-fiction about D.C. The farm workers who diligently tend and harvest the US fields and produce is a major component of the agriculture industry. This research explores the current issues and challenges that domestic, seasonal farm workers face through the lenses of embodiment and habitus theory. Narratives and insights from interviews were integrated with current literature to present a complete picture of the cyclical life of the domestic farm worker in San Luis, Arizona. This thesis argues that farm work is a unique profession which has left its mark on the body and the behavior. Those in the border region have added agency due to the opportunities the border presents. As this research highlights, additional attention and research is needed to redesign policies and initiatives to adequately assist and provide for a population that provides so much.

Understanding the energy input and emissions resulting from the development of biofuels is important to quantify the overall benefit of the biofuel. As part of the On-Farm Biomass Processing project, a life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted on the process to harvest and transport agricultural crop residues ready for processing into biofuel. A Microsoft Excel model was developed that inventories the entire life cycle of the process, including incorporation of stochastic analysis within the model. The LCA results of the agricultural equipment manufacture are presented, along with the results of each step of the process, including fertilizer addition, single pass harvest, double pass harvest, and transport from the field to processing facility. Various methods of analyzing co-products are also presented for the single pass harvesting step, in which comparisons between market based, mass based and process-purpose based allocation methods are reviewed. The process-purpose based method of fuel consumption difference between combine operation in conventional harvest versus single pass harvest is determined to be the most realistic of the process. A detailed comparison of the energy and emission differences between single pass and double pass harvesting is given, along with the total LCA results of harvesting and transporting the biomass.

But the productivity of smallholder farming systems in Africa remains low. High erosion, contaminated water, threatened human health, reduced soil water, and natural resources functionality, that is, ecosystems services, and decreased biodiversity dominate. Low support in the farm environment is also responsible for this situation.It is hypothesized, based on the huge body of literature on CCAM, that the implementation of already existing arable and plant cultivation methods like crop diversity, alley crops, forage legume-based crop rotations, mulching, organic matter recycling, and reduced tillage intensity will increase CCAM performance and also farm productivity and income. Based on a brief analysis of CCAM relevant arable and plant cultivation methods and agricultural production systems potentials and challenges, this chapter offers guidance for further transforming climate robust African farming systems.

This paper examines lecture notes of the Korean writer Pak Kyong-ni, the author of the multi-volume epic novel Land. This notebook of lectures has not been studied in Russia and has not been translated into Russian, but its contents are included in the elective course called Features of Pak Kyong-ni’s artistic worldview, which is read to senior students of the Department of Korean Studies at St. Petersburg State University. The writer outlined all the most important points for understanding her creative path and expressed her thoughts about the purpose of literature. From this point of view, it is interesting to examine the author’s views against the background of the historical and socio-cultural context of that period (early 90s of the last century) and to identify both the universal and author’s vision of literary creativity. The study is relevant due to the growth of scientific and public interest to modern South Korean literature and to the problems of intercultural communications.

As the building sector is a major contributor to global energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, there is a growing focus on achieving significant reductions in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in the building sector. Energy consumption in buildings can be classified into embodied energy and operational energy. Studies have indicated that operational energy contributes to 80%–90% of the total life cycle energy in buildings while embodied energy only contributes to 10%–20%. Though several strategies have been implemented to reduce OE, there has not been enough attention on reducing embodied energy in buildings. Therefore, it is vital to conduct a study on reducing embodied energy in buildings. A comprehensive literature review was conducted by referring to books, reports, theses, journals, magazines, and conference proceedings to identify several practices for reducing embodied energy in buildings as well as barriers to moving towards low embodied energy in buildings. In conclusion, the study showed that reducing embodied energy in buildings is an essential step towards achieving significant reductions in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in the building sector, and a concerted effort is needed to overcome the identified barriers and implement the identified practices.

Agricultural production is currently at a crossroads due to the need to balance the requirements of climate, biodiversity, air quality, and access to food health, farmers' incomes and economic conditions. These demands are often controversial, and the goals of policy makers are contradictory. Sustainability in agriculture needs to be put into practice. The concept of sustainable agriculture is based on agro-ecology and a system approach and aims to promote sustainable, resilient, cost-effective and stable farming systems. Based on the analysis of the scientific literature and the current situation, the paper authors have concluded that a logical path to sustainability is integrated agriculture. It is a whole farm management system that allows farmers to identify opportunities and threats and act accordingly, while also taking into account the interests of consumers in their business. The paper aims to outline the role of integrated agriculture in the development of sustainable agriculture based on the analysis of the relevant scientific literature and the current situation. Integrated management is the knowledge-based management of all available resources integrated farms are able to provide climate benefits, provide more diverse (especially pasture) land management, farm animals have a higher quality of life and survival.

In the history of world literature, there are many examples of one book writers, when only one work of the literary heritage of a particular author was famous, in the shadow of which the rest of his work remains. In Vietnamese literature, this is Bao Ninh, the author of the novel The Sorrow of War (first released in 1987 under the title The Destiny of Love), after which his writing life came a long pause. Bao Ninh was born in 1952 in Hanoi. In 1969, he went to the front and fought for the next six years. After the publication of his first novel, The Sorrow of War, he became one of the most famous writers at home and abroad. This book told the real truth about the recent liberation war of the Vietnamese people. His interviews have been published in national and foreign media, which help to understand what happened to the famous novelist over the years. They served a certain compensatory function, allowing Bao Ninh to remain in the national literary process.

Wang Meng is one of the Chinese writers whose works have been most translated in Russia, and even the sales of translations of the same work in Russia have greatly exceeded the sales in China. It can be said that Wang Meng’s influence on Russia is the same as that of Russian literature on Wang Meng’s life, and the latter is an indispensable cause of the former. This paper takes the period from the founding of the People’s Republic of China to the late period of 1980s as the timeline, the influence of Soviet literature on Wang Meng’s writing during the Sino-Soviet period, and the variation of Wang Meng’s acceptance of Russian and Soviet literature in the new period. Combined with text analysis, the author explains the literary phenomenon of writer Wang Meng. First of all, the influence of Soviet literature on Wang Meng’s writing during the Sino-Soviet period was divided into two parts: one is the “invisible” imitation of Russian and Soviet literature by contemporary Chinese writers; the other is Wang Meng’s inheritance and influence of Soviet literature. Among them, the Slavic spirit in Wang Meng’s works and the “revolutionary” theme in Wang Meng’s novels are the innovations of this article. In the second, the author separately analyzes three aspects: Wang Meng’s practice of Bakhtin’s carnivalized poetics, the change from idealism to realism, and the Orthodox spirit, Lao Zhuang thought and Wang Meng’s literary worldview. According to the language expression, the author’s creative style and the writers’ literary thought analysis, author explored Wang Meng’s acceptance and transformation of Soviet literary theories, literary genres, and Russian national spirit after the 1980s, and revealed Wang Meng’s reform and innovation in the literary path. Furthermore, from this perspective, examine the reasons why Wang Meng’s novel creation can stand on its own, repeatedly innovate, and the literary charm is evergreen.

Backed by belief, he maintained human dignity and integrity with poetry, and opened up the divine dimension of poetry writing, which opened up a new aesthetic dimension for the Chinese contemporary poetry.

Taken alone, each changemaker could markedly influence the entire chain of research consumption. Combining these change forces together has the potential for a complete upheaval in the biome. During the 2019 Charleston Library conference, a panel of stakeholders representing researchers, funders, librarians, publishers, digital security experts, and content aggregators addressed such questions as what essential components constitute scholarly literature and who should shepherd them. The 70-minute open dialogue with audience participation invited a range of opinions and viewpoints on the care, feeding, and safekeeping of peer-reviewed scholarly research. The panelists were: James King, Branch Chief & Information Architect at the NIH; Sharon Mattern Büttiker, Director of Content Management at Reprints Desk; Crane Hassold, Senior Director of Threat Research at Agari; and Susie Winter, Director of Communications and Engagement, Springer Nature. The panel was moderated by Beth Bernhardt, Consortia Account Manager at Oxford University Press. Beth posed questions to the panel and each panelist replied from their vantage point. The lively discussion touched on ideas and solutions not yet discussed in an open forum. Such collaborative approaches are now more essential than ever for shaping the progress of the scientific research community. In attendance were librarians, editorial staff, business development managers, data handlers, library collection managers, content aggregators, security experts and CEOs.

The works of the Tang Dynasty poet Bai Juyi have been selected for many times into Chinese general language textbooks because of their popular significance and aesthetic value. The overall length is as much as 15 articles, ranking second only to Li Bo, Du Fu and Wang Wei. His poetry not only has a profound theoretical level, but also is widely accepted by readers of different ages. The reason is that his poetry creation has the characteristics of combining simplicity and sublime, which can naturally integrate popularity and aesthetics, reflecting more real life in thought, and at the same time has a high level of poetry theory. From the perspective of children’s literature, taking the internal research of literature as the method, this paper attempts to conduct an in-depth discussion on the theoretical guiding ideology, creative characteristics, writing content and aesthetic dimensions of Bai’s poetry, and combined with specific works, it analyzes the unique classical aesthetic phenomenon of giving consideration to the popularity in the readers’ expectation vision and the literary nature of the rules of poetry creation.

The paper deals with contemporary representations of two classical plot models: Peach Blossom Spring (武陵桃源) and Dream Journey (夢遊錄) originated in Chinese literature tradition and were peculiarly developed in pre-modern Korean literature. The paper discusses their representations in South Korean poetry and prose. The analysis shows, that Peach Blossom Spring as a social utopia enters Korean literature both in an ironical context and as an opposition to the city life preoccupied with everyday vanity. The majority cases is when it serves the base for contemporary stories of an ideal place quest with the protagonist realizing the false character of the ideal. The case of the reversed usage of the Dream Journey plot in the existential story The Journey to Mujun by Kim Seung-ok has been analysed by the A. F. Trotsevich. The paper will render another case with a lost opportunity to wake up after the realization of mistakes. The paper bases on the works of widely known South Korean writers/poets as Choe In-ho, Jeong Hyon-jong, Ha Il-ji and others making the conclusion on the main transformational trends in the plot models.

The Dream of the Red Chamber by Cao Xueqin, being the pinnacle of Chinese classical literature, has been studied and commented on for several centuries. Being a recognized encyclopedia of old Chinese life, this novel provides the reader with numerous information about various aspects of the life of the aristocracy of Qing China. The theme of the theatre is one of the most interesting aspects of traditional culture, reflected in the pages of “Hongloumen”. The novel provides information about the peculiarities of the social status of actors, the composition of theatre troupes and their varieties, repertoire, the ways of organization of performances, the management system of troupes, etc. There are not so many “opera scenes” in the Dream of the Red Chamber, but they cover a wide range of the existence of musical drama. Based on this information, it is possible to identify the specifics of “house troupes” in the Qing period, to consider the role, functions and influence of opera productions on the characters of the novel, to trace the fate of the actors. The novel Dream of the Red Chamber is an inexhaustible source of knowledge about the traditions and cultural features of imperial China.

We review the literature on the long-term impacts of Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) programs in Latin America. Long-term impacts are defined as those that both: 1) are related to the accumulation of human capital, and; 2) are observed after beneficiary children have reached a later stage of the life-cycle. We focus on two life-cycle transitions. The first is children exposed to CCTs in utero or early childhood, who have then transitioned to school ages. The second is children exposed to CCTs during school ages, who have then transitioned to early adulthood. The evidence is inconclusive. The experimental literature finds consistent positive long-term effects on schooling, as well as some positive impacts on cognitive skills and learning, socioemotional skills and off-farm employment and income. However, many other estimates are not statistically different from zero and it is often not possible to discern whether this is due to lack of impact or to methodological shortcomings in theevaluation studies. Non-experimental evidence also is mixed. Developing further opportunities for analyses with rigorous identification strategies for the measurement of long-term impacts should be high on the research agenda. As original beneficiaries continue to age, this should also be increasingly possible.

Are these children exceptionally gifted, or do other psychological or sociological factors and family circumstances contribute to success? To address the learning crisis in state schools in developing countries, development agencies have primarily focused on identifying inputs that can improve state education provision. Yet, even from low-performing state schools, some children do manage to successfully complete primary and secondary education cycles, pursue higher education, and record upward social mobility, but we know very little about the factors that facilitate this success. This paper addresses this gap in the literature. Tracing life histories of successful alumni of state schools supported by CARE, an education foundation in Pakistan, this paper identifies children’s motivation to succeed as having a major impact on educational performance. However, for most this motivation is not a product of an innate desire to excel, it is a product of contextual factors: parental encouragement; an acute desire to make parents happy and to alleviate their sufferings; the company of friends, cousins, and peers who are keen on education and thus help to create an aspiring, competitive spirit; encouragement given by good teachers; and exposure to new possibilities and role models that raise aspirations by showing that what might appear to the child unachievable is in fact attainable. High motivation in turn builds commitment to work hard. Equally important, however, is the provision of financial support at critical points, especially when transitioning from secondary school to college and university. Without financial support, which could be in the form of scholarships, loans, or income from part-time work, at critical junctures, even highly motivated children in state schools cannot succeed. The paper thus argues that rather than being focused solely on education inputs, development agencies should also seek to explore and understand the factors that can motivate children in state schools to aim high and work hard to succeed.
