Abstract:
PurposeRapid transformation of agrifood value chains because of population growth, urbanization, rising consumer incomes and increased demand for food quality and safety has resulted in the need for smallholder farmers to coordinate horizontally through group formation and collective marketing to improve farm performance in developing countries. This paper aims to examine the factors that influence farmer group membership and collective marketing decisions and their impacts on smallholder farm performance in rural Ghana.Design/methodology/approachUsing data from a recent survey of 447 rice farmers in rural Ghana, an endogenous switching regression model is employed to account for selection bias arising from both observable and unobservable farmer attributes.FindingsThe data reveal that group members and collective marketing participants obtained higher prices and also incurred lower input costs. The econometric estimates show that age, access to credit, mobile phone ownership, distance to market and road status are the main drivers of group membership and collective marketing decisions. The authors also find positive and significant impacts of farmer group membership and collective marketing on farm net revenues.Research limitations/implicationsThe findings from this study suggest that government and donor support for the formation of farmer groups during implementation of agriculture and value chain interventions should as well incorporate strategies to facilitate collective marketing.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to examine the role farmer groups and collective marketing play in improving smallholder farm performance.

Abstract:
With the decline in public budgets for agricultural extension support, ties between members of farmer groups are becoming more important to facilitate information transfer about agroforestry. This paper examines the role of social network ties in predicting organizational leadership in an agroforestry-based farmer group. Using social network data derived from interviews with members of farming groups based in the Ayeyarwady Delta of Myanmar, we established a positive relationship between advice-seeking ties and organizational leadership. In other words, farmers who were highly sought for agroforestry advice were more likely to be elected as leaders of the farmer group. Results show the frequency of interactions through advice-seeking ties also had a positive influence on the probability of farmers holding leadership positions. We found a core–periphery structure for the advice networks, whereby farmer leaders were overrepresented at the network core. Interestingly, general members of the farmer group were also in the core of the core-periphery structure, suggesting that engaging with farmers without leadership roles can also effectively disseminate agroforestry information to peripheral farmers. We conclude that farmer groups are valuable in agroforestry adoption and persistence and further analyses of formal leadership structures are needed to support more transparent and accountable governance.

Abstract:
This paper was abstracted from writer experiences in conducting the second year Community Service program among farmer group organizations in Anduriang Village at Padang Pariaman Regency. This program was aimed at increasing the knowledge and skills of farmer groups’ human resources in processing animal feed made from natural raw materials, especially from the golden snail, which has often been the enemy of farmers all this time. This study was inspired by various conditions that indicated the powerless of the farmer groups in overcoming the problem of golden snail pests in the Anduriang Village at Padang Pariaman Regency. This issue was reflected in part from the lack of understanding and awareness of farmers in controlling the golden snail pests. Based on this condition, various farmer empowerment programs were needed to be implemented in the form of increasing the farmers’ knowledge and skills in economic development of the society, particularly for the farmer group as target groups of this program. These empowerment programs needed to be conducted collaboratively and synergistically between the local government and universities.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to find out how to determine the cost of goods sold and the selling price of agricultural products according to farmers and according to accounting.Data analysis used is descriptive method, that is data collected, grouped and arranged so that it can be examined based on relevant theories and related to the problems discussed for conclusions. From the results of the research that the writer did, the authors concluded that in determining the selling price, the farmers of the Sri Mulya farmer group were not in accordance with the correct accounting calculations. Farmers determine the selling price according to middlemen based on dolog (logistics depot). Dolog prices according to farmers are still very low. However, farmers still get big profits, it depends on the amount of rice harvest obtained. For this reason, the author recommends that the association request to increase the selling price of rice to Dolog.

Abstract:
This article (study) was summarized based on writer experiences in conducting Community Service program among farmer group organizations in Anduriang Village at Padang Pariaman Regency. This program was intended to increase the understanding and awareness of farmer groups about the benefits of golden snails, which so far have only been seen as crop pests for farmers, and then made them a source of income. Based on this condition, various farmer empowerment policies and programs were needed to be implemented in the form of increasing the capacity of the parmers in economic development of the society, especially for the farmer group organization as target groups in this program. These empowerment activities and programs needed to be conducted collaboratively and synergistically between the local government and universities.

Deer Industry New Zealand established Advance Parties to improve profitability among New Zealand deer farmers. The number of deer farmed in New Zealand has fallen in the past decade and new ways of doing things are needed to ensure farmers are confident in the animal as a profitable part of the pastoral agricultural mix. Advance Parties are a farmer-centric means of encouraging adoption of new practices to improve the profitability of farming deer. Advance Parties are small groups of like-minded farmers focussed on helping each other implement, record and observe changes on their properties, with external assistance when needed. The results of these changes will be disseminated to the wider deer farming community. Deer Industry New Zealand is running 15 Advance Parties as at November 2015, with the aim of running 30 on an ongoing basis. This would involve approximately 300 deer farms. Abstract:
The government implements a special effort program (of food self-sufficiency) to achieve national food sovereignty focusing on three commodities (rice, maize, and soybeans). One of the efforts is to increase production with the intercropping pattern (Turiman). The program sustainability must be supported by strong farmer institutions. This study aimed to obtain the information about the farmer groups institution as a strong capital for sustainable farming. This study used a qualitative approach with data related to the assessment problem. This study also used relevant literature to learn the correlation between empirical facts and government programs. The study was conducted in June 2019 in Babakan Village, Majalengka Sub District, Majalengka Regency, West Java Province on 100 respondents. Based on the results, the farmers were still oriented to the monoculture model (maize). The supporting organization as a transformation institution was still very weak as indicated by the organizational structure. The low farmer knowledge on the technology introduced and the farmer group management as a technology transfer agent were still oriented towards monopoly profits. Thus, the Turiman model can be come a consideration for its sustainability. Such conditions require government intervention to achieve the strength farmer group institutions with various appropriate methods, such as assistance in managing organizations and collecting business assets as well as business capital.

Abstract:
In Ghana, farmer-herder conflicts have become widespread and increasingly assume a violent dimension. Competition over access to and use of land and water resources is at the center of the conflicts. However, competition does not automatically result in conflicts. The conflicts are driven by triggering activities of both farmers and herders. This study identifies triggers of farmer-herder conflicts in the Upper West Region of Ghana and tests the level of agreement among key stakeholder groups on the triggers of these conflicts. This is an important step in determining approaches to farmer-herder conflicts prevention and resolution. The data were collected via focus group discussions of five key stakeholder groups: chiefs-traditional rulers, Fulani herdsmen-cattle owners, crop farmers, civic society-media, and government agencies. Fourteen triggers of conflicts were identified by stakeholders, with destruction of crops by cattle ranking as the most important trigger. In testing agreement among stakeholder groups on triggers of conflicts, only crop farmers, chiefs-traditional rulers and government agencies significantly agree on the triggers of conflicts. There is also moderate level of concordance when the ranking of triggers of conflicts by all five stakeholder groups are simultaneously considered. The results show farmer-herder conflicts are complex and preventing and /or resolving these conflicts require integrated approaches.
