This thesis intend to study very broadly and generally the verbal and clausal structure of the Farsi, the official language of the Islamic Republic of Iran. It tries to bring the clausal and verbal structure of Farsi language into the recent amendments of X-bar theory, i.e. the introduction of two different sets of categories, namely functional and lexical ones. We will use the principle and parameter model of generative grammar as our theoretical model of analysis. Persian has a case system whereby specific direct objects are marked with the enclitic را =rā. However, the spoken language presents a greater degree of flexibility with regard to =rā marking, especially in complex clauses such as restrictive relative clauses where a head noun can fulfil more than one syntactic function. This thesis discusses linguistic constraints on scrambling and flexibility in word order in spoken Persian (Farsi) and presents a computational model for efficient implementation of these constraints for a subset of Persian. Linguistic phenomena which we have studies include local scrambling, long distance scrambling, extrapolation of clauses, topicalisation, case tendancy and the discourse marker ra. The work extends previous work on Persian based on Government and Binding (GB) theory by considering the pragmatic aspects of Persian Grammar and long distance scrambling.
