Okazawa, Yasuhiro. "The scientific rationality of early statistics, 1833-1877." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2019. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/289440.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the activities of the Statistical Society of London (SSL) and its contribution to early statistics-conceived as the science of humans in society-in Britain. The SSL as a collective entity played a crucial role in the formation of early statistics, as statisticians envisaged early statistics as a collaborative scientific project and prompted large-scale observation, which required cooperation among numerous statistical observers. The first three chapters discuss how the SSL shaped the concepts, practices, and institutions of statistical data production. The SSL demonstrated how the use of a hierarchical division of labour and blank form minimised observers' leeway to exercise individual observational skills and ensured uniformity in the production of statistical facts. This arrangement effectively depreciated first-hand observation in statistics and allowed statisticians to rely on the statistical facts collected by other people. It prompted the SSL to launch the Journal of the Statistical Society of London to serve as a virtual storage of observed facts where one could share their data for further aggregation and retrieve that of others for their analysis. The statisticians also engaged in contemporaneous discussion on the best mode of a statistical office with a view towards producing complete and internationally comparable statistical facts. The SSL's endorsement of the Belgian Central Statistical Commission model and the International Statistical Congress was intended to support the introduction of uniformity into statistical data at both the national and international levels. The last two chapters of this thesis discuss how the SSL's activities contributed to the historical formation of human sciences and the emergence of social scientists. Statisticians demanded the recognition of a scientific field which, independent from natural science, studied people as social beings and whose discourses moulded the treatment of the people they studied. The SSL's activities helped statisticians not only establish their scientific expertise but also develop their unique scientific ethos. Statisticians learnt not to trust their personal observations since individuals could see only a partial, and potentially distorted, picture of society. Instead, statisticians disciplined themselves to patiently wait for the accumulation of statistical facts and analyse data in their entirety because this was the only way, they believed, to truly understand the complex relationships people had with each other. The SSL's activities assisted statisticians' conception of statistical fact and produced a new kind of intellectual inquirer who patiently collected statistical facts as the basis of knowing and intervening in people's lives.

Berggren, Elin. "Characterization in Social Satire : A comparative analysis of the heroines Elizabeth Bennet in Jane Austenʼs Pride and Prejudice, and Becky Sharp in William Makepeace Thackerayʼs Vanity Fair." Full text
Abstract:
This essay presents a comparative analysis of the characterizations of the female protagonists Elizabeth Bennet in Jane Austen̕ s Pride and Prejudice (1813), and Becky Sharp in William Makepeace Thackeray̕ s Vanity Fair (1847-1848). The analysis is conducted from a gender perspective, and with the use of feminist criticism. The two novels complement each other since they are both satirical images of society, concerning aspects such as class and gender. Also, both novels  portray women climbing the class ladder, during the period of the Napoleonic wars. In the comparison, the main focus lies on the social satire constructed around the heroines of these novels. I come to the conclusion that Austen̕ s and Thackeray̕ s characterizations are very different from each other, mainly due to their different satirical approaches. This conclusion is put in relation to a patriarchal context and to feminist values.

Abstract:
In the recent decades a new type of economic system based on collaborative consumption has increased in popularity. The new cost competitive model challenges the traditional business model that has fueled the hyper consumption, which the 20th century is known for. This research focuses on how national cultures impact the development of this new economic system, in order to understand how much people of different cultures are willing to share. A conceptual model was created to try to understand cultural influence on sharing. Hofstede’s cultural dimensions have been used to measure and compare the empirical data, that was collected through five focus groups representing four different countries: Sweden, France, China and United States. Out of the six cultural dimensions, it was found that the indulgence dimension together with power distance might influence people’s willingness to share. Indulgence was also found to explain socialization as a motivational factor together with power distance and long-term orientation. In conclusion, four different sharing sectors were analyzed, and it was found that transportation and clothing was considered shareable, disregarding national culture. Accommodation might be dependent on national culture since the focus groups that were supposed to be indulgent showed resistance to share, while the restraint groups showed a greater willingness. Technology was not considered shareable by any group. Furthermore, three motivational factors, that might be depend on national culture, was identified. These are environment, socialization and technology. An additional four motivational factors were identified, but these might be independent of national culture. These four are personal, economical, trust/safety and convenience. Lastly, additional findings showed that similar genders have similar willingness to share across cultures which makes it a topic of interest for future research.

Buys, Pieter Willem. "The legitimacy predicament of current day accounting theory / Pieter Willem Buys." Thesis, North-West University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/4578.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent corporate reporting history is well–known for its corporate failures and questionable accountancy practices, many of which caused the profession to be frowned upon. However, the splodge on the accounting profession?s reputation goes deeper than its corporate reporting failures. The scientific foundation thereof is also being questioned in academic circles. Even though accounting scholars have been trying to formulate foundational accounting theories, it has been the accounting regulators that have been more successful in promoting their versions of what accounting theory should be, which place a question mark on the legitimacy of current day accounting theory. This thesis aims to delve deeper into the foundational philosophies of accounting and its impact on the practice of accounting. With the current accounting globalisation efforts, the profession?s stewardship function is becoming less prominent in its promulgated standards, which in turn brings the focus on the many questionable ethical practices found in the profession. Even though the regulatory bodies require their members to commit themselves to professional codes of conduct, which entails competency, integrity, objectivity and confidentiality, the 1st article in this thesis claims that ethical conduct is more than mere adherence to rules and regulations. It is also about the image of not only the profession, but also accounting research and education. Accounting is broadly practised, researched and taught within its so–called conceptual framework, of which a key objective is to guide and inform accounting practice. The conceptual framework became the basis upon which accounting theory is based. However, many accounting scholars are openly critical of presenting accounting theory as a set of practical guidelines. The 2nd article in the thesis concludes that, from an academic perspective, accounting theory should be based on three quintessential guidelines. The first of which is its primary purpose of reporting on the historic economic events, secondly the provision of useable and comparable information about these events and finally, the facilitation of business decisions based on relevant and reliable information. In the above mentioned business decisions, the concept of value is often taken for granted and many accounting techniques? effectiveness is judged on how well it approximates an item?s value. The 3rd article argues that the multiple purposes for which accounting information is used complicates the issue of value, as reported by accounting. Two key conflicting valuation perspectives are the so–called decision–usefulness and true income perspectives. The current drive towards fair value accounting, as opposed to historic cost accounting, cast doubts on the reliability and relevance of accounting information. Even though it may be argued that value–based techniques are more relevant because it is a better reflection of the current business conditions, the mere subjective nature thereof and the accountant?s objective valuation skills make the true relevance of this information questionable. Furthermore, mixed model valuations found in financial statements makes cross–company information unreliable. Accountancy research of the past four decades focussed on the concept of user decision–usefulness. The user is also pre–eminent in the globalisation of accounting standards of the FASB and the IASB, where users are specified as the equity investors, lenders and capital providers. The 4th article acknowledges that although these user categories are important consumers of the financial data, there are other users which are also impacted by the financial information and the company?s operational performances. There are also concerns over accounting?s key assumptions, such as its quantification and predictive abilities, which are fundamental to the decision–usefulness objective. Furthermore, there are questions around how the regulators decided what information is suppose to be useful and what type of utility is being sought. In summary, the focus on the vocational aspects of accountancy stands in contrast to claims of accounting as an academic discipline in the social sciences. The reality is that the practices of the profession will probably always play a central role in what is taught at university level, and the regulators, as the final authority on accounting standards, will probably remain dictatorial in promulgating their versions of accounting theory. Yet, accounting and its wide spread impact on society, makes it a key discipline within the economical and management sciences. It is therefore essential for the resurrection of accounting as a social scientific discipline that there is a return to foundational accounting research that will prepare (and enable) prospective practitioners and academics to question the status quo and push back on accounting practices that are threatening to extinguish the flame of accounting scholarship.

Purpose: This study intends to deepen the knowledge about consumer behavior around ethical practices. An increasing body of research has analyzed whether and how consumers’ ethical concerns regarding business practices translates into actual behavior. Despite this burgeoning interest, consensus is far from granted. Whereas one strand of research claims that consumers are more willing to buy products embedded in an ethical environment, another strand asserts that consumers’ words and deeds do not match. Precisely, although consumers report having high ethical concerns and valuing brands whose practices follow ethical standards; they are not willing to purchase more products or services from these same brands. Design/Methodology: We conducted one experimental study manipulating three different ethics-related marketing appeals (donation, fair trade, control) to test these conflicting findings. Findings: In this study, consumers were more willing to purchase products associated with donations, but this difference vanished when we introduced a more realistic dependent variable (i.e., willingness to receive additional information via e-mail). Furthermore, fair trade appeals did not influence neither consumers’ purchase intentions nor their willingness to receive additional information. Practical implications are also discussed. Research limitations: The main limitation of this study is related to does not involve a totally realistic scenario and thus does not capture the real intentions of buying. A more realistic assessment of purchase intentions would avoid potential pitfalls of social desirability, creating a more accurate evaluation of the principal dependent variable. Practical and Social implications: By deepening the understanding of consumer ethical behavior, companies can evolve their offers delivering benefits to the consumer, to the business and to the collective well-being. Originality: Few studies related to Consumer Ethical Behavior were done using the experiment method and using also some specificities of the fashion Market.

Abstract:
LES formulation was applied to simulate the flow fields around rotating fan blades tested by DLR. The turbulent flows around fan blade rotating with 500 RPM were simulated and the far-field noise was exactly computed by using the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings equation with an inclusion of quadrupole source formulation. Variations of lift forces and deviation angles in the spanwise direction were analyzed to correlate flow parameters with acoustics parameters and identify noise sources. The dipole noise computed at the far-field by computed drag and lift forces was in good agreement with experimental data and the dipole source was also found to be the major contributor to overall far-field noise from unsteady calculation.

Abstract:
The numerical method for 3D calculation of the turbomachinery tonal noise generation, propagation and radiation in the near and far fields taking account of the rotor-stator interaction is developed in CIAM. The method is based on the direct numerical solution of three-dimensional Euler equations for disturbances in time or in frequency domain using numerical methods of computational acoustics (CAA). For far-field radiation calculation the Ffowcs Williams method is used. The method is build into CIAM domestic aeroacoustic solver 3DAS (3 Dimensional Acoustics Solver). In this paper we present some examples of our method applications for calculation of rotor-stator interaction and propagation: • Ducted fan tonal noise simulation; • Ducted counter-rotated fan noise simulation; • Low pressure turbine tonal noise simulation.

Abstract:
A study was done to investigate how boundary layer tripping mechanisms can affect the ability of a permeable surface FW-H solver to predict the far field noise emanating from an airfoil trailing edge. The far field noise in a baseline airfoil as well as the baseline airfoil fitted with fin let fences was analyzed. Two numerical boundary layer tripping mechanisms were implemented. The results illustrated the importance of choosing a permeable integration surface that is outside any high frequency waves emanating from the trip region. The results also illustrated the importance of choosing a boundary layer tripping mechanism that minimizes any extraneous noise so that an integration surface can be taken close to the airfoil.

Abstract:
Large eddy simulations are performed for hot and cold single stream jets with an acoustic Mach number of (Ma = Vj/a∞ = 0.875). The temperature ratio (Tj/T∞) for the hot jet is 2.7 and for the cold jet it is 1.0. Grids with 34 million points are used. The simulation results for the flow field are in encouraging agreement with the mean velocity and Reynolds stress measurements. The Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings (FW-H) equation is used to predict the far-field noise. In this study four cylindrical FW-H surfaces around the jet at various radial distances from the centreline are used. The FW-H surfaces are closed at the downstream end with multiple endplates. These endplates are at x = 25.0D – 30.0D with Δ = 0.5D apart. It is shown that surfaces close to jet get affected with pseudo sound. To avoid pseudo sound, surfaces must be placed in the irrotational region. To account for all the acoustic signals end plates are necessary. However, a simple averaging process to cancel pseudo sound at the end plates is not sufficient.

Abstract:
Further development and validation of an innovative DES-based methodology for the prediction of jet noise from installed configurations is presented. A Grey-Area improved Delayed Detached-Eddy Simulation (DDES) model has been implemented in an industrial solver and validated for a static single-stream jet. The measured far-field sound directivity was predicted to within 2 dB and frequencies up to around St = 2 to 3 were resolved on a grid of 15.4M cells. To address the key problem of defining a suitable location of the data surface for Ffowcs Williams & Hawkings (FWH) far-field integration, a sensor function based on a statistical evaluation of the vorticity magnitude is proposed. This is applied to a complex installed jet/wing configuration, for which predicted far-field noise levels are shown. A strong increase in noise due to the presence of the wing of up to 18 dB in the forward arc is reported. This interaction noise becomes stronger and shifts to higher frequencies when the wing is moved closer to the jet.

Abstract:
Continuous Positive Air Pressure (CPAP) devices are used to generate pressurized airflow to relieve upper airways and allow Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) patients to breathe comfortably and easily. The airflow path in these devices consists of several components including but is not limited to inlet and outlet ducts, a centrifugal fan, a humidifier and a human interface. These components contribute significantly to the noise generated by the airflow. This research paper present a numerical study of a centrifugal fan performed with commercial ANSYS software package to predict the sound and vibration produced by the centrifugal fan. The methodologies are following: first, the unsteady flow field is computed using the CFD model to obtain aerodynamic quantities and sound sources. Then, the finite element method (FEM) is used to predict the flow-induced vibration using the predicted aerodynamic quantities. Finally, the Ffowcs-William and Hawkings’s (FW-H) acoustic analogy is used to predict the acoustic pressure at the far-field using the sound sources from the unsteady simulation.

Abstract:
The paper shows the procedure of estimating different fan stage geometries from the point of the fan stage aerodynamic and acoustic efficiency by using CFX v.5.6 gas dynamics software. Two different fan stages were examined. The acoustic analysis was made based on unsteady pressure distribution along exit guide vanes. The unsteady pressure distribution was determined from 3-D calculations of rotor-stator interactions. An improved approach is suggested to estimate acoustic sources with the leading edge geometry considered. Three various grid models were analyzed to estimate the grid discretization influence on computational results. The hybrid approach was used to evaluate the acoustic contribution of fan stage rotor–stator interaction to a turbo-jet engine total noise level on first harmonic in a far field. This approach consists of three steps. The first step includes the solving of Navier-Stokes equations in fan stage, the second step includes the solving of linearized Euler’s equations (LEE) in a near field and, then, the third covers the calculation of Ffowcs Williams–Hawkings (FWH) integral in a far field. The first step marked the effect of strong attenuation of acoustics modes in the fan passage. The results of calculations in the far field were compared with experiment data.

Abstract:
The hot supersonic exhausts of gas turbine engines on military aircraft generate dangerously high noise levels. The noise levels associated with operating these engines are harmful to aircraft carrier deck personnel as well as detrimental to ship and aircraft structures. In this paper, the supersonic jet exhaust is simulated using Large Eddy Simulation (LES), and the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings (FW-H) equation transforms the LES solution to an acoustic solution in the far-field. A Mach 1.5 laboratory jet test at United Technologies Research Center - Acoustics Research Tunnel is used as validation for the LES/FW-H method. A grid refinement study was performed with the objective of determining the requirements for accurate noise predictions. The finest grid resolution yields the best near and far-field acoustic prediction. A second LES/FW-H validation case is shown for a twin jet experiment that was performed in the anechoic chamber at University of Mississippi’s National Center for Physical Acoustics (NCPA). The LES/FW-H method is applied to the higher complexity heated twin jet with faceted nozzle profiles, demonstrating the applicability of the method over a wider range of flow regimes. The far-field noise prediction agrees very well with the NCPA experiment, including the prediction of broadband shock associated noise and jet screech.

Abstract:
The shortfall in the funding for construction, operation and maintenance of road infrastructure in Australia is substantial and future investment appears to be beyond the capabilities of government funding alone. In the past, the private sector has proven very willing to invest in PPPs with government to provide road infrastructure and, overall, its performance in relation to construction, operation and maintenance has been far superior to that of government and has relieved government of substantial risk. However, it is unlikely that the private sector will accept the same levels of risk on new PPPs as in the past.

Law and Policy Resource Guide: A Survey of Eminent Domain Law in Texas and the Nation. Edited by Gabriel Eckstein. Abstract:
Eminent Domain is the power of the government or quasi-government entities to take private or public property interests through condemnation. Eminent Domain has been a significant issue since 1879 when, in the case of Boom Company v. Patterson, the Supreme Court first acknowledged that the power of eminent domain may be delegated by state legislatures to agencies and non-governmental entities. Thus, the era of legal takings began. Though an important legal dispute then, more recently eminent domain has blossomed into an enduring contentious social and political problem throughout the United States. The Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution states, “nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.” Thus, in the wake of the now infamous decision in Kelo v. City of New London, where the Court upheld the taking of private property for purely economic benefit as a “public use,” the requirement of “just compensation” stands as the primary defender of constitutionally protected liberty under the federal constitution. In response to Kelo, many state legislatures passed a variety of eminent domain reforms specifically tailoring what qualifies as a public use and how just compensation should be calculated. Texas landowners recognize that the state’s population is growing at a rapid pace. There is an increasing need for more land and resources such as energy and transportation. But, private property rights are equally important, especially in Texas, and must be protected as well. Eminent domain and the condemnation process is not a willing buyer and willing seller transition; it is a legally forced sale. Therefore, it is necessary to consider further improvements to the laws that govern the use of eminent domain so Texas landowners can have more assurance that this process is fair and respectful of their private property rights when they are forced to relinquish their land. This report compiles statutes and information from the other forty-nine states to illustrate how they address key eminent domain issues. Further, this report endeavors to provide a neutral third voice in Texas to strike a more appropriate balance between individual’s property rights and the need for increased economic development. This report breaks down eminent domain into seven major topics that, in addition to Texas, seemed to be similar in many of the other states. These categories are: (1) Awarding of Attorneys’ Fee; (2) Compensation and Valuation; (3) Procedure Prior to Suit; (4) Condemnation Procedure; (5) What Cannot be Condemned; (6) Public Use & Authority to Condemn; and (7) Abandonment. In analyzing these seven categories, this report does not seek to advance a particular interest but only to provide information on how Texas law differs from other states. This report lays out trends seen across other states that are either similar or dissimilar to Texas, and additionally, discusses interesting and unique laws employed by other states that may be of interest to Texas policy makers. Our research found three dominant categories which tend to be major issues across the country: (1) the awarding of attorneys’ fees; (2) the valuation and measurement of just compensation; and (3) procedure prior to suit.
