Abstract:
This chapter examines the poetics of rapid transit that emerged in the early twentieth century, including the verses of William Carlos Williams. Wishful civic boosters of the early twentieth century discerned signs of financial utopia in the “symbiotic relation” between skyscrapers and urban railways. These interdependent social forms were viewed as hallmarks of twentieth-century urban modernity. Rapid-transit poems of the period feature close-up encounters mingling people of different classes, races, and genders with unprecedented frequency, unfathomable swiftness, and sometimes uncontrollable force. This chapter first considers the differences between skyscraper verses and rapid-transit verses in terms of engagement with the modern urban landscape fashion before discussing “rapid-transit verse” in greater detail. It explores American poetry's fascination with rapid transit as a central theme, focusing on poems that dealt with subjects ranging from commuting to subways. It also analyzes William Carlos Williams's rapid-transit poetry to demonstrate the impact of the New Verse movement's passionate engagement with urban-industrial space as the site of modern experience.

Abstract:
The interrelationship between sexual and social revolutions in London in the 1890s shaped both the Irish dramatic revival and twentieth-century English drama. W. B. Yeats and George Bernard Shaw both embraced a socialism rooted in the radical eros of Percy Bysshe Shelley and developed by William Morris, Oscar Wilde, and Edward Carpenter. This “queer socialism” (the chapter acknowledges but departs from from Patrick Mullen’s earlier use of the phrase) was defined by its insistence on pleasure as the means and as the end of social progress. Yeats, Shaw, and John Todhunter—all Shelley enthusiasts, and all fascinated by Florence Farr’s bisexuality—contributed plays to a season that Farr produced at the Avenue Theatre. The opening night audience violently protested the double bill of Yeats’s Land of Heart’s Desire and Todhunter’s A Comedy of Sighs, in part because both plays mythologized the New Woman’s transgressive sexuality through occult representations of lesbian desire. Shaw moved to protect himself from homophobic condemnation by replacing Farr in the lead role of Arms and the Man with a more gender-conforming actress. After Shaw’s brilliant success, Yeats decided to pursue his dramatic career in Dublin, leaving Shaw to found a straightforwardly socialist dramatic revival in London.

Abstract:
This chapter demonstrates how, for Staël, the anticipation of a new state of affairs in Paris was not just a matter of general interest but carried immediate consequences for her own future plans and prospects. During her exile she had occasionally imagined herself beginning a new life elsewhere: in England with Narbonne; in Germany or Denmark with her new lover, Adolphe Ribbing; or even in America, where Necker had acquired some landed property. However, her real ambitions remained firmly focused upon the chances of returning to Paris and to the heart of French politics. Characteristically, while it was far from clear on what terms this return might be possible, she anticipated events, making a symbolic comeback with the timely publication of a provocative work.

Arneil, Barbara. Farm Colonies for the Irrational in Britain and Canada. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198803423.003.0006.

Abstract:
In Chapter 6, the volume examines the implementation of farm colonies for the mentally disabled and ill in Britain and the justifications provided for them by Winston Churchill, G.A. Auden, and Anthony Langdon Downs as well as the members of the Royal Commission on the Care and Control of the Feeble-Minded in 1905; before turning to examine domestic colonies in Canada, and their defenders including Tommy Douglas, Frank Hodgins, Helen MacMurchy, William Penfield, along with members of multiple Royal Commissions and Mental Hygiene committees. Like America, the farm colony was proposed as preferable to the asylum both therapeutically and financially. Even more than the labour colony, the economic benefits of the farm colony were emphasized, as members of the colony produced agricultural goods and subsidized the costs of their own maintenance, thus reducing what was seen as a growing burden on states of institutional care.
