Purpose: This study intends to deepen the knowledge about consumer behavior around ethical practices. An increasing body of research has analyzed whether and how consumers’ ethical concerns regarding business practices translates into actual behavior. Despite this burgeoning interest, consensus is far from granted. Whereas one strand of research claims that consumers are more willing to buy products embedded in an ethical environment, another strand asserts that consumers’ words and deeds do not match. Precisely, although consumers report having high ethical concerns and valuing brands whose practices follow ethical standards; they are not willing to purchase more products or services from these same brands. Design/Methodology: We conducted one experimental study manipulating three different ethics-related marketing appeals (donation, fair trade, control) to test these conflicting findings. Findings: In this study, consumers were more willing to purchase products associated with donations, but this difference vanished when we introduced a more realistic dependent variable (i.e., willingness to receive additional information via e-mail). Furthermore, fair trade appeals did not influence neither consumers’ purchase intentions nor their willingness to receive additional information. Practical implications are also discussed. Research limitations: The main limitation of this study is related to does not involve a totally realistic scenario and thus does not capture the real intentions of buying. A more realistic assessment of purchase intentions would avoid potential pitfalls of social desirability, creating a more accurate evaluation of the principal dependent variable. Practical and Social implications: By deepening the understanding of consumer ethical behavior, companies can evolve their offers delivering benefits to the consumer, to the business and to the collective well-being. Originality: Few studies related to Consumer Ethical Behavior were done using the experiment method and using also some specificities of the fashion Market.

Full textAlthough the forest of Lyons is often defined simply as a border forest, ten years of research has enabled me to make a radical change to this old geographical definition. My reconsideration of even the concept of “forest,” shows that, in the High Middle Ages, the word meant not large stretches of woodlands but, instead, a well-developed space, where timberlands, thickets, heaths, pastures, cultivated fields, and villages coexisted. The medieval forest of Lyons, the most important in all Normandy with its 30,000 hectares, was entirely devoted to the use and necessities of its ducal or royal title-holder, and it emerged as a pays formed by the coalescence of four distinct spaces between 1100 and 1450. The many sojourns of the Plantagenets and then the Capetians — due to hunting (residential space) and various wars (military space) — are documented by more than 500 acts signed in the forest of Lyons between 1100 and 1400. These sojourns produced a political space that explains the stunning careers of at least two royal favorites, natives of the pays of Lyons: William Longchamp, chancellor under Richard the Lionheart, and Enguerrand de Marigny, chief minister of Philip the Fair. Since wood was a necessity in medieval times, the forest of Lyons was also an important economic space because it earned significant revenue for its title-holder. All things considered, it is clear that the pays of Lyons produced a true ecosystem able to survive all hardships until the dark, final period of the Hundred Years War put an end to the Golden Age that the Middle Ages had brought to the forest of Lyons

The aim of this thesis is to examine the two controversial heroines in William Makepeace Thackeray’s Vanity Fair, Becky Sharp and Amelia Sedley. Amelia is a naïve, faithful, self-effacing woman who always tries to meet patriarchal expectations for women. From a Victorian point of view, she is regarded as an ideal woman. In comparison, Becky is selfish, self-confident and cunning. In order to achieve her goals, she departs from the model of traditional femininity. A female rebel against tradition was the standard image for bad women in the Victorian period. Therefore, Becky seemingly represents the image of the disastrous siren. Although Amelia and Becky are both attractive and charming, they represent two different kinds of women, considered respectively as the monster and the angel. Thackeray is a patriarchal writer and whether the heroine of Vanity Fair is a traditional Victorian woman or not, his attitude toward women is crucial. In addition, Thackeray's irony and mockery also take a wide range in Vanity Fair, and his true attitude and ideas are more complicated than the text. This thesis also analyzes Thackeray’s interpretation of the two heroines and discusses the women’s position at different levels in this novel.

This thesis attempts to reveal how William Thackeray in Vanity Fair presents to its readers an alternative morality, which is different from the Victorian mainstream moral codes. I suggest that what Thackeray wants to criticize in this “Novel without a Hero” is the over-strict Victorian morality standard, which was difficult for the people to follow; this difficulty ironically caused their hypocrisy and led to misfortune. For Thackeray, only through adequate allowance of “excess” and “transgression” can people obtain their happiness. Of course, the excess and transgression could also lead the protagonists to catastrophes in life journey, if they do not properly manage the related practices-this vision is what Thackeray calls the “dark moral” in his novel. Many critics’ arguments, like those of Gordon Ray, Eric Trudgill, Walter E. Houghton, Suzanne Keen, and Anne Thackeray, are relied on as the interpretive framework of my thesis to respectively examine the Victorian moral attitudes, the novel’s strategy of “narrative annexes,” the inconsistency and ambiguity in interpolated narration, as well as Thackeray’s personal history. With these analyses, I can explore the characters’ or narrator’s/author’s excess and transgression and illustrate the “dark moral” in Vanity Fair. In general, the excess and/or transgression serves as the means of subversion that brings forth the possibility of self-transformation, so as to open up a new space for pursuing happiness.
Kallenbach, Bradley Dean. ""... as far as words can give:" Romantic poetry as displaced mystical experience in William Wordsworth's Prelude." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10539/10867.
Full textThis dissertation investigates the ways in which a broad and perennial problem – ‘the problem of dualism’ - is approached by three areas of inquiry, namely, English Romanticism, mysticism and contemporary studies of consciousness. By comparative analysis of key passages in Coleridge’s Biographia Literaria, Huxley’s survey of mystical traditions in the Perennial Philosophy and work by contemporary philosopher Colin McGinn on the ‘mind-body problem,’ I explain how each discipline proposes an ideal state of ‘synthesis’ or ‘coalescence’ between the subjective and objective as a solution to ‘the problem of dualism.’ In turn, each discipline discerns a faculty or means towards such a synthesis. These are the ‘Imagination,’ ‘Third Eye,’ and ‘Bridging Principle’ respectively. Thus, this dissertation has three additional aims. First, I argue that the Romantic ‘Imagination’ and mystical ‘Third Eye’ faculty are conceptually similar in an attempt to show that certain Romantic poets (primarily Wordsworth, Coleridge and Shelley) sought access to a super-sensuous realm via the ‘Imagination.’ However, seminal texts such as Coleridge’s Biographia, Shelley’s Defence of Poetry and Huxley’s Perennial Philosophy imply that the Romantic poet, unlike the mystic, is thwarted from voluntary and veridical access to these realms: the Imagination reaches an impassable threshold which the mystical ‘Third Eye’ traverses. This condition, coupled with an inability to convey mystical experience in language with greater acuity, I argue, may account for the presence of melancholy in key Romantic works such as Wordsworth’s Prelude and Immortality Ode. I thus seek to enhance our understanding of the critical commonplace referred to as “Romantic melancholy.” Second, I aim to illustrate this view by analysis of key passages in Wordsworth’s Prelude and Immortality Ode. Finally, I aim to show that the early Coleridgean understanding of ‘the problem of dualism’ as highlighted in the Biographia can be further elucidated by contemporary theories of consciousness on the ‘mind-body’ problem.

Today, the Vietnamese milk market has been such that consumers are paying higher and higher prices for the products of unchanging quality. In the context of the market, the purpose of this research is to identify the causal links among customers’ payment equity, satisfaction and willingness to pay. By introducing the concept of payment equity, we investigate the relationships between willingness to pay and payment equity through the intervention of satisfaction. Importantly, the study provides an in-depth examination of subjective price and subjective quality in relationships with payment equity, satisfaction and willingness to pay. The results provide causal evidence that payment equity has a strong effect on customer satisfaction, and higher customer satisfaction will lead to higher willingness to pay. Subjective quality play as outcome while subjective price play as input of usage process. Both of them have strong relationship with payment equity, satisfaction and willingness to pay. Finally, we found that some demographic and marketing mix variables moderate the whole model and affect directly to willingness to pay.
