Abstract:
In 1984, the book-of-the-television-show The Elegant Shed was released by Otago University Press, and subsequently reviewed by Libby Farrelly in New Zealand Architect (1985) 2:39-40. Declaring the cover "wholly seductive ... glutinous sensuality," but its contents only "occasionally brilliant," Farrelly asks a lot of a not very big volume: to be "a definitive treatise on New Zealand's architecture." Though concluding that such a demand was "unsupporting" Farrelly's persistent fear is that David Mitchell and Gillian Chaplin lacked a "valiant idea." The review included the plan of Hill, Manning, Mitchell Architects' design for the Auckland School of Music. Citing Mitchell's comment in The Elegant Shed that "there was no logical connection between the side of a grand piano and the shape of a noise deflecting wall," Farrelly warns that such arbitrary aesthetics condemns architecture to mere "applique." Though "applique" is not, strictly speaking, collage, patching together is an apt description of the design process evident in the Music School plan. In their description of the design Hill, Manning, Mitchell Architects tauntingly declared that the project contains elements of "Baroque, Spanish Mission and Post-Modern" architecture (New Zealand Architect (1981) 5/6:1-3), and suggested that their transition from being "straight-line modernists" to "sensuous and baroque... [is] not unexpected in middle age." This paper will discuss Manning & Mitchell's design of the Auckland Music School in the context of their own writings and seminal international texts on the post-modern architecture, Learning From Las Vegas (1972) and Complexity and Contradiction (1966) by Robert Venturi et al. and Colin Rowe's Collage City (1978). I will argue that the hardest thing for architecture to bear/bare, especially New Zealand architecture, is a sense of humour.

Abstract:
Maren Uthaug's razor-sharp and self-deprecating cartoons reflect Sami people in a seemingly offensive way, addressing sensitive Indigenous issues such as cultural disorientation, racism, suicide, and addiction in an outspoken way. However, it was Sami people – Uthaug's relatives – who asked for and successfully published these cartoons. Why do Sami people request cartoons like these? Outlining some relevant aspects of highly divergent Western Comics Studies, the analysis and interpretation of selected cartoons is an opportunity to compare Uthaug's provocative strategies to the functions of humour in First Nations literature. Accordingly, the paper focuses on Indigenous humour as a means of emotional and social healing in the processes of decolonization and reconciliation and, additionally, adopts Frank Farrelly's concept of provocative therapy which is defined as a way of teasing people into health. Relying on Native American Terry Tafoya's (Taos Pueblo) description of Farrelly as a kind of medicine man, the paper asks whether also Uthaug acts as a cartoon-drawing Chiffoneti, a blend of priest, healer, and trickster regarding Indigenous and non-Indigenous readers.

Lea, Daniel Owen. "J. G. Farrell : towards a postmodern fiction." Thesis, Royal Holloway, University of London, 1996. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.243812.

Full text
Abstract:
J. G. Farrell's 'Empire trilogy' is perhaps the most sustained and innovative achievement of post-1947 British imperial discourse. However, despite almost universal critical acclaim his work has remained on the fringes of academic study, as a result of readings which confine his importance solely to the field of postcolonial critiques of imperialism. It is the contention of this thesis that Farrell's work can also be read as a postmodern undermining of both historiography and the fictional recreation of history. Through a chronological study of his early and mature fictions, my work argues that Farrell developed from a realist social commentator, influenced by modernism and existentialism, into an accomplished postmodern novelist, inquiring into the validity and ideological commitment of historical representations of British imperialism. Following an introductory chapter, which establishes the principal codes through which Farrell's novels have been traditionally interpreted, chapter two examines the three early novels, suggesting their influences and highlighting the themes and motifs which are relevant to the trilogy. Chapter three interprets Troubles as a transitional novel, evincing a dependency on the stylistic techniques of modernism, but also evidencing a movement towards postmodern parody and narrative self-consciousness. The next chapter concentrates on The Siege of Krishnapur and the intertwining of history and fiction in contemporary conceptions of the colonial adventure-tale. Centred around the Indian Mutiny, the novel draws upon historical documentation as well as fictional renditions, to expose their similar roots in narrative construction and ideological partiality. Finally my thesis examines The Singapore Gri Farrell's monumental synthesis of style and content. This, his last completed novel, re-creates Singapore shortly before its fall in 1942, using a wide range of inter-discursive referents, from fiction, the cinema, drama and conventional historical documentation. Farrell underscores the artificiality of British imperialism in the tropics, paralleling it with a highly-metafictional textual self-consciousness. By freeing Farrell from the constraints of postcolonial labelling, this thesis suggests that his fiction is indicative of an intellectual and cultural zeitgeist of the 1970s, and simultaneously positions him as one of the pioneers of British historiographic metafiction.

Delattre, Elisabeth. "J. G. Farrell, romancier de la condition humaine." Lille 3, 1998. http://www.theses.fr/1998LIL30013.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
A research and development project has recently been carried out to develop ceramic thermocouple probes (CTPs) capable of measuring temperatures up to 2000°C and rugged enough to withstand extended service in high-temperature gas turbine environments. Existing metallic thermocouple technology cannot withstand such conditions for sustainable periods of time. Following initial laboratory studies, CTP trials were carried out in power generation boilers (Farrell and Higginbottom, 1995). Prototype CTPs were subsequently developed for evaluation in gas turbine (GT) combustors (at atmospheric and elevated pressures) and in a Spey engine (Patent, 1996). The CTPs performed well under the harsh conditions imposed, demonstrating their mechanical integrity and consistency/sustainability of signal output. Initial studies have also been carried out with a view to applying ‘thin-layer’ ceramic thermocouples directly onto thermal barrier coatings to give surface temperatures on stator or other hot gas surfaces, and are briefly mentioned. Rowan Technologies and TÜV Energy Services are currently looking for companies interested in exploiting this new ceramic thermocouple technology.

Abstract:
A 52 year old female patient with a severe bleeding tendency since the age of two was studied. Her history revealed recurrent petechial bleedings, two severe postoperative haemorrhagic episodes and intensivemenstrual bleedings which required blood transfusions. Coagulation studies ruled out any coagulation disorder including von Willebrand's disease. Platelet count and morphology(using light and electron microscopy) were normal. The patient had prolonged bleeding times (up to 15 min). Her platelets aggregated normally in response to ADP, arachidonic acid, thrombin, ionophore A 23187, epinephrine and ristocetin. In contrast, platelet aggregation in the presence of collagen and wheat germ agglutinin could only be achieved with very high doses of these agonists. Repeated analyses of the patient's platelet proteins by two-dimensional 0'Farrel gel electrophoresis followed by silver staining or blotting onto nitrocellulose and staining with a mixture of peroxidase-coupled lectins showed that glycoprotein la and intact thrombospondin were absent. An immunoblot for thrombospondin showed several proteins with lower molecular weight than thrombospondin. Preincubation of the patient's platelets with thrombospondin normalized collagen-induced aggregation. At a recent follow-up examination the patient had no petechial bleedings. Platelet protein analysis revealed thatintact thrombospondin and glycoprotein la were present. These results suggest that both glycoprotein la and thrombospondin have essential roles in collagen-induced platelet aggregation.
