Abstract:
J. G. Farrell's 'Empire trilogy' is perhaps the most sustained and innovative achievement of post-1947 British imperial discourse. However, despite almost universal critical acclaim his work has remained on the fringes of academic study, as a result of readings which confine his importance solely to the field of postcolonial critiques of imperialism. It is the contention of this thesis that Farrell's work can also be read as a postmodern undermining of both historiography and the fictional recreation of history. Through a chronological study of his early and mature fictions, my work argues that Farrell developed from a realist social commentator, influenced by modernism and existentialism, into an accomplished postmodern novelist, inquiring into the validity and ideological commitment of historical representations of British imperialism. Following an introductory chapter, which establishes the principal codes through which Farrell's novels have been traditionally interpreted, chapter two examines the three early novels, suggesting their influences and highlighting the themes and motifs which are relevant to the trilogy. Chapter three interprets Troubles as a transitional novel, evincing a dependency on the stylistic techniques of modernism, but also evidencing a movement towards postmodern parody and narrative self-consciousness. The next chapter concentrates on The Siege of Krishnapur and the intertwining of history and fiction in contemporary conceptions of the colonial adventure-tale. Centred around the Indian Mutiny, the novel draws upon historical documentation as well as fictional renditions, to expose their similar roots in narrative construction and ideological partiality. Finally my thesis examines The Singapore Gri Farrell's monumental synthesis of style and content. This, his last completed novel, re-creates Singapore shortly before its fall in 1942, using a wide range of inter-discursive referents, from fiction, the cinema, drama and conventional historical documentation. Farrell underscores the artificiality of British imperialism in the tropics, paralleling it with a highly-metafictional textual self-consciousness. By freeing Farrell from the constraints of postcolonial labelling, this thesis suggests that his fiction is indicative of an intellectual and cultural zeitgeist of the 1970s, and simultaneously positions him as one of the pioneers of British historiographic metafiction.

Delattre, Elisabeth. "J. G. Farrell, romancier de la condition humaine." Lille 3, 1998. http://www.theses.fr/1998LIL30013.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:

Farrell, Sidney. "Evaluating the competitive intelligence effort in a manufacturing company / Sidney Farrell." Thesis, North-West University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/748.

Full text
Abstract:
In order for organisations to remain competitive, supportive tools for decision-making are required. In an industry of information overload, the emphasis is not on more information but on actionable intelligence, capable of guiding decisions in a company. Specific areas are considered fundamental for the success of actionable competitive intelligence. The most important facet is the support and involvement of top management and the participation of the entire company. Furthermore, the necessity of a knowledgeable competitive intelligence champion and a motivated competitive intelligence team to drive the competitive intelligence process. Clearly identified key competitive intelligence needs, and competitive intelligence products, which include systems, hardware and software is considered as vital for the successful execution of actionable competitive intelligence.. The study evaluates the competitive intelligence effort of a manufacturing company, referred to as Company X. The abovementioned fundamentals for the success of competitive intelligence form the basis from which this study was executed. The primary objective of this study is to determine the necessity of a competitive intelligence program as a business discipline, and to evaluate the existing competitive intelligence effort in Company X. The goal of this study is to compare the existing practice of Company X with the literature, and to identify performance gaps or opportunities for improvement. To realise this objective an extensive review of the current literature on competitive intelligence was undertaken. Empirical research on the current competitive intelligence program in Company X was conducted and the results of this study were measured against specific literature on competitive intelligence. An additional brief empirical study was conducted to compare the current competitive intelligence efforts of Company X with previous research findings on the topic of competitive intelligence in South Africa and more specifically competitive intelligence in a South African manufacturing environment. From the literature study and empirical study, specific conclusions are made. The conclusions also form the basis on which specific recommendations are proposed to improve the competitive intelligence program in Company X. The study will also include an implementation plan, which can be used as a practical working document to improve the current competitive intelligence program in Company X.

In this work we present a study of the ordinary cohomology of groups, Tate cohomology and Farrell cohomology, and some applications in the context of Algebraic Topology. In this context we were developed topics of the theory of groups with periodic cohomology, detailing results and necessary and sufficient conditions for a group to have this property. As an application of this theory we present a criterion for a map defined in sphere homotopy in a CW-complex to have a (H,G)-coincidence. Also, we have developed some topics about groups that satisfy certain finiteness conditions, as for example, virtual duality groups. Besides, through Farrell cohomology, we present an obstruction for virtual duality groups satisfying the duality isomorphism of the theory due to Bieri and Eckmann.

Abstract:
This case-study examines the Swedish armed forces in Afghanistan between 2009 and 2012. The aim of this study is to explore how it comes that an organization that is promoting security and stabilizing operations in a post conflict setting in northern Afghanistan gaudily turns in to an aggressive fighting force. The analytic framework is based on Theo Farrells theory of military adaption as well as Lauren Wilcox’s theory of the role of gender as an explanation of military organisations offensive bias. The results show that the Swedish behaviour should be understood as a combination of adaption to demands form allied forces, a result of pollical will to achieve national political goals and a strong offensive bias.

Abstract:

Thesis, Perpignan, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PERP0010/document.

Full text
Abstract:
This phd contributes to the definition of efficiency measures and productivity indicator, in the microeconomic theory. It presents theoretical and empirical contributions. Firstly, this phd develops a review on standard measures of efficiency and productivity. It is shown that the directional measure, under the assumption of constant returns to scale, raises some problems in the assessment of productivity changes. Moreover, it is established that the "slacks-based" and directional "slack-based" measures (or Färe-Lovell measures) do not allow to characterize technology. It follows that such measures do not allow to evaluate efficiency and productivity changes. An alternative approach is proposed which overcomes this difficulty. Then, this phd introduces two new indicators: a social Luenberger-Hicks-Moorsteen indicator and a generalized indicator of productivity. The first mesure the impact of publics policies in the line of the capability theory introduce by A. Sen. This indicator consists on a transposition of the Hicks-Moorsteen indicator by considering a sub-vector of social factors. The second indicator generalizes standards productivity indicators. It allows to find the Luenberger and the Luenberger Hicks-Moortsteen as special cases of this general indicator. Considering the multiplicative version of the generalized indicator, on can find the Malmquist and Hicks-Moorsteen indicators, as special cases. Finally, this phd presents some empirical applications to illustrate the methodology. These studies evaluate and compare the performance of the tourist destination, and specifically for the Languedoc-Roussillon, which involves a cross-border analysis framework

Abstract:
We give an explicit description of the Loday assembly map on homotopy groups when restricted to a subgroup coming from the Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence. This proves and generalises a formula about the Loday assembly map on the first homotopy group that originally appeared in work of Waldhausen. Furthermore, we show that the Loday assembly map is injective on the second homotopy groups for a large class of integral group rings. Finally, we show that our methods can be used to compute the universal assembly map on homotopy.
