Full textManganese phosphide is a rich compound in magnetic phases and exhibits a variety of phase transitions which have been the subject of many experimental investigations for more than a decade. With the external magnetic field H applied along the b and a axes (intermediate and hard axis, respectively) the geometry of the boundaries in the points where the modulated phases meet with ferromagnetic phase in the phase diagram T x H were studied. Measurements of magnetic susceptibility were realized to elucidate if the phase boundaries meet at an angle or not thus indicating the nature of these triple points. For the case of H applied along the intermediate axis it is shown that the shape in which the phase boundaries meet is consistent with the geometry of an ordinary triple point. With H parallel to the a axis the results are consistent with the existence of critical end point in which the modulated phases boundary close.

Full textAlong the last years, experimental data of many di_erent sources has been gathered to show that order parameter curves of essentially all nematic liquid crystals compounds can be reduced to a single and universal curve of corresponding states; experimental data of an impressive number of di_erent nematic compounds has been linearly rescaled in such a way that all them coalesced in a single curve. The surprising novelty observed on nematic liquid crystals is that this universal behavior is not restricted to the neighborhoods of a critical region, as it is usually expected from critical phenomena, but it covers the entire domain of the nematic phase, from the nematic isotropic temperature to the nematic crystalline temperature. The aim of this thesis is to study the statistical mechanics fundamentals of this behavior and shown that it is consequence of the universality of the angular part of the potential of the interaction between the particles composing the liquid crystal. We will illustrate this behavior presenting evidences that it can be found on the smectic-A phase.

Abstract: In this work, the fotocatalysis was used to promote cyanide ion degradation studies, in on aqueous and gaseous phases. Titanium dioxide was fixed on the inner glass cylinder of the photocatalytic reactor inner glass surface of the glass cylinder. The source of irradiation used, were the germicide and black light lamps (30 Watts). The cyanide ion concentration was monitored using an eletrode sensible to the ion in study. The first step of this work, was the stydy of cyanide degradation in the aqueous phase, using a reciculation system. The parameters analyzed that influence the fotocatalytic process were: the use of different sources of irradiation (germicide and black light lamps), molar flow rate variation, and the use of different aeration conditions. The obtained results showed that the germicide lamp, is more efficient that black light while remotion of8l % while 46 % were obtained to the black light lamp. In the molar flow rate variation results, 3,0; 7,7; and 23,2 J.lmolL-I, where the remotion of 83, 80 and 50 %, respectively showing there to be a major disposition of active sites on the photocatalist surface, even to higher values as 239, 284, 372 J.lmolL-I, the obtained remotion was of63, 46 and 48,5 %, respectively, for occurring a active sites saturation on the titanium dioxide surface. The referent result to the medium aeration use, was got ITom a high efficiency whe utilized a photocatalytic reactor aeration, related to the aeration in the solution, and on the lack, being the results 99,2; 78,0 and 74,8 %, respectively. The second estep of this work, was the cyanide degradation in the gas phase, with a single pass though the reactor. The results obtained for concentration of 126, 168,264,63, 127, 101 and 99 ppmv, were 55, 33, 56, 55, 39 and 53 %, of degradation when the germicide lamp was used. When the black light, lamp was used, the remotion obtained were 25, 34 and 38 %, for concentrations of98, 147 and 145 ppmv, respectivelis

Full textIn this work we studied theoretical and experimentally the effects of Phase Conjugation by Degenerate Four Wave Mixing and Transversal Phase (PCD4WM) Modulation in Cr+3 doped crystals. We studied the PDC4WM in Al2O3:Cr+3 (ruby) and GdAlO3:Cr+3 with on Ar laser (at λ= 514 nm) and obtained a good agreement between our experimental and theoretical results (in these ca1culations we used the nonlinear refractive index n 2 values from a previous paper [1]. The theoretical model that we developed explains very well the saturation behaviour of the PDC4WM efficiency that was not understood in previous papers [47.48,2]. These values of n2 are also in good agreement with our results in Transverse Phase Modulation. We also developed a theoretical model for the effect of Transverse Phase Modulation in PCDFWM that explains our observations [2]. The nonlinearity ?n IND.2? from these materials was investigated by us using three different techniques [1.2], by other two groups [61.62] (for the ruby) in nondegenerate two-wave mixing and all those measurements are in good agreement. In alexandrite (BeAl2O4:Cr +3) we studied the χ(3) (or n2) spectrum in resonance with the R lines. We attributed the asymetric shape of the spectrum by the effect of two differents contributions, one term due to the resonant interaction of the two-level system and the other due to the polarizability change caused by excited state population (this is the first observation of this kind of effect.

Abstract: Studies on the phase of the quantized electromagnetic field are in general aimed at seeking a proper phase operator. Even though there is no consensus on these operators, states with a well-defined phase do exist, and in our work we show that the field phase can be studied by using these states. After a brief introduction to some of the formalisms that try to build the phase operator, we focus on the Coherent Phase States. We present some of their phase proprieties and analyse the product of variances of phase and photon number using those states. We then study the "phase distributions" obtained from the radial integration of the generalized parameterized quasiprobability function and compare them with the Pegg-Barnett phase distribution, which is considered the most appropriate one. We find that for certain values of the parameters involved, there is an almost complete agreement between both distributions, in the case of a coherent state as well as for the highly nonclassical "Schrödinger cat state"
