Full textNeedle-punched nonwovens produced by special needle-punching technologies like velourising and needling of two nonwoven layers with defined space to get a three-dimensional structure were investigated. The vertical orientation of the fibres in an uniform parallel fibre pile layer provided by the velourised needle-punching process causes an increase of the effective fibre pile surface and the hollow space. Also, the effective fibre pile surface and the hollow space are increased by needle-punching two nonwoven layers with defined space; fibre-bundles keep the two nonwoven layers at defined distance. Mathematical coherences of the geometry of barbs, number of fibres transported by the barbs, needle-punching parameters and the resulting increase of fibre pile surface and hollow space of the nonwovens formed the basis for all carried out investigations. By a number of tests varying in special input parameters, followed by a regression analysis and the creation of a semantic model. The influence of these parameters on the textile-physical properties could be proved. An adaptation and verification of the mathematical formulas was carried out by using the results of the analysis and the modelling. The found results allow to predict the influence of special input parameters on several output parameters and to get conclusions on the size of the effective fibre pile surface and the specific hollow space of three-dimensional nonwovens. This guarantees an essential reduction of costs and time in the industrial production process of needle-punched velourised and spacer nonwovens
