Johansson, Linnea. "Are you shitting me? : Public toilets as a feminist issue." Thesis, Umeå universitet, Arkitekthögskolan vid Umeå universitet, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-171769.

Abstract:
Women cannot exist in public space without public toilets, yet it can be difficult to find any that feel clean and safe to go to. That is why I propose to build public toilets for women on Renmarkstorget in central Umeå. Public toilets are where gender issues are exemplified in a public space and are therefore very politically charged. If we want to build for gender equality, we need to be conscious of who we are building for, how the space reflects our social values, and have a clear vision. Equal floorspace is often assigned to men’s and women’s toilets. But women need more floor space in toilets, due to menstruation, bringing children, sitting down to pee etc. This leads to longer toilet queues for the ladies’ room, and consequently, women stay shorter periods of time in public or even avoid it. This especially affects girls, elderly women, disabled women, homeless women, mothers, and pregnant women. The solutions include changing building regulations, architects acting on the issue, and of course electing more women on the city council who can speak on this issue from experience. This proposal includes 7 freestanding structural toilet units, a lunchroom, a playground, bicycle parking, and a bus stop. Because what happens outside the toilet is most important. Those activities need to overlap with the needs of women and enable them to feel seen but not exposed or observed and allow them to have control of their environment. Equality is about voice and therefore architects need to be conscious of how physical, virtual, and social environments either encourage, discourage, include, or exclude those voices by design.

Frieday, Karen Yvonne. "Daviault, drunkenness, and discourse: The social construction of the drunkenness defence as a feminist issue." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/8896.

Full text
Abstract:
As part of an overall move towards protecting the public (especially those felt to be most vulnerable, e.g. women and children), legislation has recently been tabled which would forbid the use of a defence based on self-induced extreme intoxication producing a state akin to automatism (the drunkenness defence) in trials of general intent offences. This legislation (Bill C-72, s. 33.1), is in direct conflict with the 1994 ruling of the Supreme Court of Canada in Daviault in which the majority found that to deny such a defence in general intent cases was in violation of the principles of fundamental justice enshrined in our Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The Supreme Court of Canada decided that the common-law precedents set by cases such as Beard, Majewski, and Leary, which did not allow evidence of extreme intoxication in general intent cases, had the effect of convicting individuals for crimes in which they were lacking the necessary mens rea or voluntariness. It is proposed that Bill C-72 was tabled in response to feminist claims-making, in addition to the public, and media outcry raised by the Daviault case. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Gonzalez, Evelyn. "Why Weight? Zines as Effective Health Communication Tools Against Fat Phobia." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2018. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/1088.

Full text
Abstract:
The current models for health care hold at their core a pathologization of fat bodies informed by discriminatory methods and ideologies leading to an explicit lack of quality medical care for those who fail to meet normative standards of health and size. This project is interested in examining alternative public health models that provide interventions into those systems. Specifically, this work will seek to understand how the grassroots movement, Health at Every Size (HAES), serves to interrupt current limited understandings of health and weight. HAES individualized, weight-neutral approach to health and wellness exists in seeming opposition to contemporary ideas around healthcare practices. In studying this alternative model, conventional ideas of health care towards fat patients will be understood to be informed primarily by discriminatory structural and ideological practices. In addition, by highlighting the healthcare industries’ investment in the medical industrial complex, this project aims to deconstruct and critique notions of health while increasing access to care that is informed by the realities of bodily difference. In addition, this thesis will argue for zines as important health information dissemination tools by first mapping and complicating its history, expanding on zines as an artistic and politicized medium, and finally emphasizing its capacity to communicate through alternative knowledges and distribution networks.

Skogh, Maja. "Women’s narratives on (in)security in Abkhazia : Theorizing abortion rights as a security issue." Thesis, Försvarshögskolan, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:fhs:diva-9449.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is set out to examine how women in Abkhazia understand their own (in)security and to explore how the participating women understand the prohibition of abortions that is implemented in the breakaway region. Furthermore, the study seeks to, based on the empirical findings, theorize abortion rights as a security issue. The thesis is guided by Feminist Security Theory and previous feminist literature. The data is generated through ten semi-structured interviews with women. Through a thematic analysis the findings from the interviews are categorized into two main themes that are responding to the two first research questions; How do women in Abkhazia understand their (in)security?; How do women understand the prohibition of abortions? The thematic analysis finds that women in Abkhazia understand their (in)security as dependent on four aspects; conflict context; economic insecurity; political representation and participation; structural inequality and gender-based violence. Moreover, it finds that women’s understanding of the abortion prohibition also includes four aspects; economic insecurity; women’s rights; political representation and participation; the nation’s interests. The findings are understood as mirroring and thus this thesis argues that abortion prohibition exacerbates women’s insecurity. Lastly, it suggests that abortion rights should theoretically be understood as a security issue. The study at hand empirically contributes to the existing literature on women’s (in)security narratives and furthermore adds a theoretical contribution on abortion rights as a security issue.

Móntez, Melissa I. "Let Your Panza be Your Guide: Decolonizing Fat in Chicanx Art and Literature." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2016. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/856.

Full text
Abstract:
Representations of Chicana bodies in dominant popular culture have historically been contested by Chicana feminists’ own self-representations through art and literature. However, few works examine representations of fat Chicana bodies in literature by Chicana feminists. Through a literary analysis of The Panza Monologues and Real Women Have Curves, as well as an artistic analysis of Laura Aguilar’s photography and through the lenses of Chicanx, queer, and fat studies, my research bridges a gap between Chicana feminist work and fat studies. It looks at how fatness is constructed through the self-representation of women’s bodies. Ultimately, I argue that these art objects are sites of fat Chicana artivism—activism through the use of art—that call for body liberation, respond to the “normative body” required by a colonial legacy of symbolic and physical violence against Chicanx women, and pave the way for further creative artistic and literary work centered on fat Chicanxs to be done.

Geloğullari, Gülin. "Female Friendship Films: A Post-Feminist Examination of Representations of Women in the Fashion Industry." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2015. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc848090/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on three fashion industry themed female friendship films: Pret-a-Porter/Ready to Wear (1994) by Robert Altman, The Devil Wears Prada (2006) by David Frankel, and The September Issue (2009) by R.J. Cutler. Female interpersonal relationships are complex – women often work to motivate, encourage and transform one another but can just as easily use tactics like intimidation, manipulation, and exploitation in order to save their own jobs and reputations. Through the lens of post-feminist theory, this thesis examines significant female interpersonal relationships in each film to illustrate how femininity is constructed and driven by consumer culture in the fashion industry themed films.

Jovanovski, Natalie. "Digesting Femininities: an Examination of Body-Policing Attitudes in Popular Discourses on Food and Eating." Thesis, 2014. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/29724/.

Full text
Abstract:
Feminist and psychological literature has long established a link between women’s often conflicted relationship with food and social discourses that reinforce harmful notions of the ideal female body and the need for bodily self-surveillance. However, new cultures around food and eating have emerged which purport to offer different ways to connect with food. One feature of these gendered discourses is their use of feminist terminology and ideas of empowerment and emancipation. This thesis sets out to explore popular cultural discourses on food and eating by examining recent, best-selling diet books and cookbooks written by women and the iconic feminist texts that have inadvertently helped shape them. The thesis will argue that together, these food and eating-related discourses reinforce and normalise body-policing gender norms and body-centric attitudes, despite their broader aims to challenge these ideas. By viewing these texts through a feminist post-structuralist lens, and employing methodological tools from critical discourse analysis, this thesis attempts to move beyond individualistic, body-centric approaches that dominate existing literature. It aims to fill a gap in this literature and in current debate by examining different cultural discourses for the ways body-surveillance messages are normalised and perpetuated. It advances the idea of ‘food femininities’ to describe the multiple means by which authors of diet books, cookbooks and iconic feminist texts instantiate and reproduce body-policing narratives. It concludes that these apparently new discourses on food and eating, like the discourses that preceded them, promote similarly harmful, self-objectifying attitudes in women.

Coutts, Lindsay Mae. "Lifting up the issue: exploring social work responses to economic abuse as a form of intimate partner violence in Sweden." Master's thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/16760.

Full text
Abstract:
Men's violence against women in intimate relationships is a pervasive and serious social problem that negatively impacts a women’s life in a multitude of ways. Economic abuse is one tactic commonly used by an abuser to control their partner's financial resources and independence. Unfortunately, there is limited research on this form of intimate partner violence, especially in the context of Sweden. The aim of this study was to illuminate the issue of economic abuse by exploring how social workers at Swedish helping agencies understand economic abuse, its impact on women and what they believe their role is in addressing it. A qualitative exploratory case study design was used in this study. Data was collected with semi-structured interviews of eight respondents from five agencies in Västra Götaland county, in addition to policy documents and practice manuals scrutinized for their content. The thematic analysis used revealed five themes: social workers' awareness; normalisation; cultural dimensions; complexities of intervention; and navigating through the barriers of bureaucracies, which were analyzed through a liberal feminist conceptual framework. These findings suggest that social workers' have a sophisticated awareness and understanding of economic abuse and its damaging consequences. Additionally, social worker’s identify a clear role in responding to economic abuse in their crisis intervention. This study sheds light on areas of social policies and practice that can be improved to recognise and respond to economic violence more adequately as it requires more long-term solutions than just the provision of safety and protection. Additionally, it illustrates the importance of social workers' well-informed understandings and insights of economic IPV in contributing to policy and practice development as well as empirical research on violence against women.

Thomas, Melanie Ann. "Is Parentification a Gendered Issue? Examining the Relevance of Gender in Adults’ Lived Experiences of Childhood Parentification." Thesis, 2017. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/37826/.

Full text
Abstract:
Parentification is commonly discussed in the psychological literature as a parent–child role reversal, in which children are often positioned in families as pseudo adults/parents (Hooper, 2007; Jurkovic, 1997). Interest in this phenomenon has largely been psychological and relevant literature has produced significant intra-personal insights (Jurkovic, 1997). However, an inherent limitation of existent research has been a failure to thoroughly examine the significance of gender affiliations within parentification dynamics. To address this research gap, I set out to explore the extent to which notions of gender are significant in adult participants’ recollections of parentification from a feminist perspective. The participants involved in this study include 9 females and 3 males, who self-identify with experiences of parentification. Applying a feminist-thematic analysis this study indicates that parentification is gendered in a number of significant ways. Gendered parenting norms influence mothers’ and fathers’ involvement in parentification. Additionally, this study shows that whether gender is relevant to the participants’ parentification tasks depends on the sex formation of the role reversal they are involved in. Participants in same-sex dynamics (mother–daughter, father–son) perform gender-normative tasks. In contrast, the tasks performed by the males in cross-sex dynamics (mother–son) are gender subversive. Further, this study shows that gender difference influences the outcomes of parentification, the nature of adult relationships, mental health and the seeking of professional psychological assistance. The findings of this study underline the usefulness of replacing a gender-blind perspective of parentification with a feminist understanding.

Northey, Tracy Anne. "Fetal alcohol syndrome is a feminist issue : a framework for services as articulated by and for women who have given birth to alcohol affected babies." Thesis, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/13997.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the mid-1980's, the issue of alcohol use during pregnancy has garnered increased social work attention. Women who consume alcohol while pregnant are at risk for giving birth to babies with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) and other alcohol related birth defects. Many of the recommendations regarding the prevention and treatment of alcohol use during pregnancy have been written by and for professionals. Absent from these recommendations are the perspectives of the women most closely effected by the issue. Furthermore, the efficacy of treatment and prevention are often measured in terms of fetal outcome without consideration for the woman's health and well being. In an attempt to rectify the eclipsing of women from what is said and done about pregnancy and alcohol use, in-depth interviews were conducted with eight women who have given birth to an alcohol affected baby. The mothers relay their experiences of pregnancy and birth, coping with addiction, and parenting an alcohol affected child. Throughout their trajectories the mothers make efforts to take responsibility for themselves and their children but are continually dismissed or duped by those who are in a position to help. Relationships also figure prominently as adversaries, advocates or enablers. Both pragmatics and philosophy play a role in the day to day ability of the mothers to both make ends meet and to make sense of their lives. Despite these barriers the mothers are able to exert agency and self-advocacy. The stories and recommendations that the mothers offer point to a framework for services that: is holistic and driven by the mothers themselves, provides effective interventions for children and adults who are alcohol affected, offers individualized addiction services, promotes education that is specifically geared towards professionals, and addresses the structural inequities that women face. From the perspectives of the women who have given birth to alcohol affected babies, FAS is a feminist issue.

Braden, Emily. ""Así me gustas gordita": Representaciones de la gordura en la música popular y la literatura del Caribe hispano." Thesis, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/279.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines contemporary musical and literary representations of female fatness in the Hispanic Caribbean. Chapter I explores the stereotype of a greater acceptance and valorization of fatness within the African Diaspora using contemporary feminist scholarship on cultural aesthetics and the body. Fatness is discussed as being both sexually transgressive and traditionally feminine. Chapter II juxtaposes male representations of “la gorda” in the lyrics of popular music of from Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico with the feminist politics of underground hip hop. Chapter III analyzes Guillermo Cabrera Infante’s hyperbolic representation of La Estrella, his fictionalization of Cuban bolero singer Fredy Rodriguez, in Ella cantaba boleros y “Metafinal” (1996). The aquatic subtexts and grotesque characterization of La Estrella’s body construct her as an icon of musical authenticity and exceptionality as well as a symbol of strength and resistance.
