Dolan, Jennifer. "The Promised Body: Diet Culture, the Fat Subject, and Ambivalence as Resistance." Scholar Commons, 2018. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/7614.

Abstract:
Since the turn of the twentieth century, middle-class Americans have considered the thin body--ostensibly the result of self-control and self-discipline--a moral imperative and a symbol of good citizenship. In this thesis, I provide a critical perspective on fat studies by examining the ways in which the field authorizes itself in a society that deems the fat body unhealthy, costly, and immoral. As one potential solution to fat-hatred, fat studies proposes fat-positivity, but I argue that fat-positivity requires an extraordinary act of imagination in which the fat person overcomes what I term the ideology of thinness and subsequently feels good about herself. Importing models of ambivalence from disability studies, I propose ambivalence as an alternative to fat-positivity. I argue that ambivalence is a legitimate response when living in a society that de-values one's embodiment, but ambivalence is undertheorized by fat studies scholars. In Chapter 2, I analyze from a feminist perspective Tweets with the hashtag "feeling fat," tracing the emotion to cultural ambivalence about consumption and consumerism. In Chapter 3, I examine how the genre of the fat memoir authorizes itself during an "obesity epidemic" and what those methods reveal about gendered selfhood. Instead of indicting these Twitter users and fat memoirists for their purported lack of fat-positivity, I emphasize instead the social situations that give rise to these cultural forms. I suggest that drawing attention to ambivalence is a form of political resistance.

Abstract:
The aim of this work was to compare magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and 3-(TCM) and 4-compartment (FCM) models for the estimation of body fat and changes in fat mass (FM) in man. FM was estimated in 10 obese women by MRI and a TCM based on underwater weighing (UWW) and body water dilution (D2O) at the start and end of a 21 day residential weight reducing regimen. Mean (SEM) MRI estimates of FM before weight loss were 3.19 (0.25) kg below values from TCM, however, FM change over the 21 days by MRI agreed well with TCM. In 8 women, intra-abdominal (IAT), subcutaneous (SAT) and total (TOT) adipose tissue area was calculated from MRI at 2,9 and 9 sites respectively. Mean (SEM)% reductions were 14.0 (12.0)% (p<0.01); 8.2 (2.0)% (p<0.0001) and 11.8 (2.5)% (p<0.0001) respectively. In another series of studies, FM was estimated by 2-compartment methods: UWW, D2O, dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), skinfold thickness, bioelectrical impedance; TCM and a 4-compartment method (FCM) based on UWW, D2O and DXA in 28 women [16 non-obese (NW), 12 obese (OW)] and 19 men [13 non-runners (NM), 6 runners (MR)]. Estimates of FM by the 2-compartment methods agreed more closely with TCM and FCM than with each other. Agreement with FCM was best in NM and worst in OW. No difference was found between fat mass estimated by TCM and FCM in men. Average density of the fat free mass (FFM) was 1.113 (NW), 1.112 (NM), 1,106 OW, 1.106 (MR) g/ml. Hydration of the FFM was 0.743 (OW), 0.717 (MR), 0.713 (NW), 0.700 (NM). MRI has considerable potential as a method for estimating body fat and provides information on adipose tissue distribution. Multi-compartment methods appear to reduce errors in the FM estimated by 2-compartment methods.

Abstract:
In the field of research within film studies which consider how aspects such as gender or race affect the portrayal of a character, the aspect of characters' body sizes are not always taken into account. By analysing the fat characters in the popular children's and young adult film series about Harry Potter, I bring attention to the fact that the use of stereotypes is significant in these characterisations, and further contributes to the marginalisation of this particular group of people. I looked specifically at what the characters had in common with each other, and if they adhered to already established stereotypes concerning fat people, and found that the one thing they all share is a lack of academic or intellectual skill to varying degrees, which is in line with the common stereotypes of fat people as dumb. I further analysed the differences between the fat men and fat women in the series, and found that fat men were a far more common occurrence than fat women, and that fat girls did not even exist in these stories. This is not surprising, as the exclusion of fat women and girls is abundant in mainstream culture.

Gill, Jason Martin Regnald. "Postprandial studies of moderate exercise and triacylglycerol metabolism." Thesis, Loughborough University, 1999. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/11106.

Full text
Abstract:
Exaggerated postprandial lipaemia has been implicated in the development of atherosclerosis. Thus, by reducing postprandial TAG concentrations, exercise may play a role in delaying atherogenic progression. This thesis sought to explore the qualitative nature of, and the mechanisms behind, the moderate exercise-induced attenuation to postprandial lipaemia. Before the experimental studies commenced, a reproducibility study was undertaken. This showed that in a group of eight middle-aged men, the postprandial plasma TAG response differed by only 1.9 ± 5.1 % (mean ± standard error) on a testretest basis, indicating that the oral fat tolerance test had enough precision to detect the effect of exercise on TAG metabolism. Previous work suggested that the exercise-induced reduction to lipaemia was linked to the energy expended by exercise. As the attenuation may have been mediated by energy deficit, rather than exercise per se, a study comparing the effect of a 90-minute moderate exercise session with an equivalent dietary-induced energy deficit on postprandial lipid metabolism was undertaken, in a group of eleven postmenopausal women. This showed that the reduction in postprandial lipaemia elicited by exercise was far greater than that elicited by intake-restriction (20 % vs. 7 %). The second experimental study aimed to establish the effect of a 90-minute moderate exercise session on postprandial chylomicron- and very-Iow-density lipoprotein (VLDL)-TAG concentrations, and its effect on exogenous (through use of a l3e-Iabelled lipid) and endogenous fat oxidation, in a group oftwelve middle-aged men. Exercise reduced postprandial lipaemia by 23 %, and over three-quarters of this reduction was due to lower VLDL-TAG concentrations. Increases in endogenous fat oxidation accounted for over half of the increase in postprandial fat oxidation. In the third experimental study, the effect of a 90-minutes moderate exercise session on Intralipid clearance, and postprandial lipaemia, was determined in a group of eight middle-aged men. Exercise attenuated postprandial lipaemia by 18 %, but did not increase Intralipid clearance. Taken together, these data imply that moderate exercise predominantly reduced postprandial TAG concentrations by reducing hepatic VLDL secretion, rather than increasing TAG clearance, and this effect is not mediated by whole-body energy deficit. In addition, this work has shown that moderate exercise is effective at attenuating postprandial lipaemia in middle-aged men and postmenopausal women.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This project analyzed First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign for how it constructs obesity and health. Let’s Move! is a national internet-based campaign to end childhood obesity. The literature on Let’s Move! is limited and focuses on the privatization and corporatization of children’s physical education in public schools. Taking an intersectional approach to critical fat studies, I use critical discourse analysis to investigate how the language used in the Let’s Move! campaign (re)enforces and (re)signifies cultural notions of fat as a social problem – specifically that fat bodies are diseased, unproductive, and a financial burden. I maintain that the Let’s Move! campaign is a symptomatic text that reveals a moral panic over the so-called childhood obesity epidemic by insisting that childhood obesity is a threat to national economy and security. I contend that Let’s Move! constructs good citizens as informed consumers, and the biopedagogies recommended by Let’s Move! promote White middle-class norms as the proper way to live while ignoring structural inequalities. Furthermore, I posit the campaign employs neoliberal discourses to frame mothers as responsible for their obese children’s weight and encourages women to conform to the cultural notion of the “good mother.” Overall, I argue the Let’s Move! campaign produces classed, raced, gendered, and able-bodied ideals of citizenship that function to further marginalize poor and minority groups.

Myers, Breanna. "Effects of Ingesting Fat Free and Low Fat Chocolate Milk After Resistance Training on Exercise Performance." Scholar Commons, 2010. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/3620.

Full text
Abstract:
Collegiate athletes are always looking for ways to improve their performance. Resistance training has been incorporated into most collegiate athletic programs for this very reason. In order to improve strength, lean body mass, and exercise performance, resistance exercise and timely protein ingestion must be followed. Incorporating protein ingestion into a resistance training routine has been shown to improve net protein balance. Milk protein is gaining popularity as an ergogenic aid. There has been growing interest in the potential use of bovine milk (cow’s milk) as an exercise beverage, especially during recovery from resistance training and endurance sports. No studies have been conducted comparing fat free chocolate milk and low fat chocolate milk on muscular strength and body composition in collegiate softball players. The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether fat free chocolate milk and low fat chocolate milk ingested after resistance exercise improves common performance assessments of collegiate softball players. Specifically, the performance assessments were the vertical jump test, 20-yard sprint, and the agility t-test. The participants were randomized according to strength and bodyweight, in a double blind experimental design. The 18 female, collegiate softball players (18.5 ± .7 yrs; 65.7 ± 1.8 inches; 156.2 ± 21.6 kg) ingested either fat free chocolate milk or low fat chocolate milk immediately after resistance exercise workouts for an 8-week period. Dependent variables included vertical jump test, 20-yard sprint test and agility t-test. The data was analyzed via a paired samples t-test (to detect difference across both groups over the eight week training period) and an independent samples t-test (to detect differences between the groups) using SPSS for Windows 15.0. No statistically significant differences were found in the vertical jump, 20 yard sprint, or agility t-test between the fat free chocolate milk group and the low fat chocolate milk group. The major, statistical, finding of this study is that the consumption of commercially available fat free chocolate milk versus low fat chocolate milk drink does not produce improvements in exercise performance in conjunction with an eight week periodized, resistance training program in collegiate softball players. The difference of 10 grams of fat (two servings per container) did not alter any of the performance variables (20 yard sprint, vertical jump or agility t-test).

Abstract:
Representations of Chicana bodies in dominant popular culture have historically been contested by Chicana feminists’ own self-representations through art and literature. However, few works examine representations of fat Chicana bodies in literature by Chicana feminists. Through a literary analysis of The Panza Monologues and Real Women Have Curves, as well as an artistic analysis of Laura Aguilar’s photography and through the lenses of Chicanx, queer, and fat studies, my research bridges a gap between Chicana feminist work and fat studies. It looks at how fatness is constructed through the self-representation of women’s bodies. Ultimately, I argue that these art objects are sites of fat Chicana artivism—activism through the use of art—that call for body liberation, respond to the “normative body” required by a colonial legacy of symbolic and physical violence against Chicanx women, and pave the way for further creative artistic and literary work centered on fat Chicanxs to be done.

Abstract:
Fried products such as chips and French fries are very popular for their appealing golden colour, crispy texture and distinct flavour. However, the significant amount of oil absorbed during frying negatively affects the nutritional value of food. In addition, oil degradation due to repeated use during frying poses a negative health impact. The general aim of this thesis is to reduce the adverse health impact of fried snacks, such as potato chips and French fries. Chapter three studies the effect of high pressure as pre- treatment before frying. High pressure was found to reduce frying time but the oil content was increased marginally. The process conditions were inadequate to cause starch gelatinization which was evident in microscope images. Chapter four investigates the nutritional stability of a blend of palm olein and canola oil. A blend that contains considerable amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids, tocopherols and tocotrienols, all components being desirable attributes of oil. The concentrations of those compounds were satisfactorily retained after repeated use of oil and the oil extracted from the fried chips was found to contain the same concentrations of fatty acids as frying oil. Chapter five examines the provenance of oil in French fries that is commonly prepared in two steps: par-frying and finish-frying. It was found that par-frying oil is expelled during finish-frying, and this occurs during the early stages of frying. Hence, the dominant oil is the finish frying oil. Chapter six demonstrates an attempt to replace frying oils with molten glucose to produce a fat-free product, so called glucose fries. In glucose fries, similarly to French fries, a crust was formed and the colour and texture development was comparable. The caramleizaion of glucose at high temperatures and the increased content of glucose in the product are some limitations in the process. The thesis has demonstrated the possibilities to reduce the negative health outcomes of fried products.

Rosqvist, Fredrik. "Dietary Fatty Acids, Body Composition and Ectopic Fat : Results from Overfeeding Studies in Humans." Doctoral thesis, Uppsala universitet, Klinisk nutrition och metabolism, 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-280949.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis was to investigate the effects of dietary fatty acids on body composition and ectopic fat in humans, with emphasis on the role of the omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) linoleic acid (18:2n-6) and the saturated fatty acid (SFA) palmitic acid (16:0). The overall hypothesis was that linoleic acid would be beneficial compared with palmitic acid during overfeeding, as previously indicated in animals. Papers I, II and IV were double-blinded, randomized interventions in which different dietary fats were provided to participants and Paper III was a cross-sectional study in a community-based cohort (PIVUS) in which serum fatty acid composition was assessed as a biomarker of dietary fat intake. In Paper I, overfeeding with sunflower oil (n-6 PUFA) for 7 weeks caused less accumulation of liver fat, visceral fat and total body fat (as assessed by MRI) compared with palm oil (SFA) in young and lean subjects despite similar weight gain among groups. Instead, sunflower oil caused a larger accumulation of lean tissue. In Paper II, plasma from Paper I was analyzed with NMR-based metabolomics, aiming to identify metabolites differentially affected by the two dietary treatments. Acetate decreased by PUFA and increased by SFA whereas lactate increased by PUFA and decreased by SFA. In Paper III, the proportion of linoleic acid in serum was inversely associated with contents of visceral-, subcutaneous- and total body adipose tissue whereas the proportion of palmitic acid was directly associated with visceral- and total body adipose tissue in 70-year old men and women. In Paper IV, overfeeding with sunflower oil for 8 weeks caused less accumulation of liver fat compared with palm oil also in overweight and obese subjects. SFA increased visceral fat in men only. Accumulation of lean tissue was similar between groups. In conclusion, SFA (palmitic acid) from palm oil promotes marked liver fat accumulation in both normal-weight and overweight/obese subjects during overeating, whereas n-6 PUFA (linoleic acid) from sunflower oil prevents such liver fat accumulation. Diverging effects of SFA and PUFA on visceral adipose tissue and lean tissue may only be applicable in some groups and/or circumstances. These results imply that negative effects associated with weight gain (e.g. fatty liver) may be partly counteracted by the type fat in the diet, overall supporting a beneficial role of diets higher in unsaturated fat compared with saturated fat for preventing liver fat accumulation.

Abstract:
The current models for health care hold at their core a pathologization of fat bodies informed by discriminatory methods and ideologies leading to an explicit lack of quality medical care for those who fail to meet normative standards of health and size. This project is interested in examining alternative public health models that provide interventions into those systems. Specifically, this work will seek to understand how the grassroots movement, Health at Every Size (HAES), serves to interrupt current limited understandings of health and weight. HAES individualized, weight-neutral approach to health and wellness exists in seeming opposition to contemporary ideas around healthcare practices. In studying this alternative model, conventional ideas of health care towards fat patients will be understood to be informed primarily by discriminatory structural and ideological practices. In addition, by highlighting the healthcare industries’ investment in the medical industrial complex, this project aims to deconstruct and critique notions of health while increasing access to care that is informed by the realities of bodily difference. In addition, this thesis will argue for zines as important health information dissemination tools by first mapping and complicating its history, expanding on zines as an artistic and politicized medium, and finally emphasizing its capacity to communicate through alternative knowledges and distribution networks.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to use specific fat pornographic imagery as a means to help us understand fat tropes and fetishization. The goal is to use our understandings of masculinity and race within fatness to create a possible launching point for further study within the field of fat sexuality studies. My rationale for writing such a paper is because fat sexuality studies is a field which has very little content, but potential for incredible scholarship which can impact not only our understandings of fat bodies, but of all bodies. The method for this thesis involves looking at specific images of “still-image” fat pornography and using these images to explain theoretical conceptions of fat sexuality. My hope for the significance of this work is that it will help to more firmly place fat sexuality studies in the academic landscape as a site for further research.

D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2004.<br>"September 2004."<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 319-373).<br>U.S. cities continue to physically expand, supported by and creating demand for water supply, road, sewerage, electricity networks. But the relationship between the professional values, education and practices of city or urban planning and civil engineering, and these infrastructure networks is an under-explored phenomenon in both fields. This doctoral dissertation contributes important new knowledge about the decisions and recommendations of planners and engineers for infrastructure and growth, and their resulting impact on the shape of rapidly growing urban areas. A qualitative method results in qualified conclusions about continuity, change and contradiction in the two professions' beliefs, actions and their physical influence on the built environment. Studying these two professions in the swampland context of south east Florida exposes their professional beliefs and actions in relation to infrastructure conception and implementation, and urban expansion. The involvement of planners and engineers with the canals and ditches used to drain the Everglades have been crucial to the accommodation of urban population growth on the east coast of the Florida peninsula. But neither profession appears satisfied with the extent of their influence on urban growth in Florida or the nation. At the same time, increases in population, number of households and land consumption will continue across the United States. The dissertation concludes that the professions must improve their understanding of the relationship between the spatial and non-spatial issues of infrastructure systems. The three-dimensional, physical aspects of urban expansion provide a real opportunity for both fields to reinvigorate and reinforce their professional expertise.<br>(cont.) The diverse elements of the development process need to be more extensively examined within a significant increase in collaborative research on growth, infrastructure and the professional practice of both disciplines. It is imperative that such results are accessible and useful to the practitioners of planning and engineering who deal with these issues on a daily basis.<br>by Katherine A. Phelan.<br>Ph.D.

Abstract:
Excess of fat deposition is a negative factor for poultry production, which affects feed efficiency and consequently the costs of meat production. The incorporation of genomic tools in poultry breeding programs may help to accelerate the selection for increased production efficiency. In this context, we genotyped approximately 2,000 42 days-old chickens from two different populations (Brazilian F2 Chicken Resource population and TT broiler Reference Population) using a high-density SNP array (600K, Affymetrix) to estimate genomic heritability of fatness-related traits, to identify genomic regions and positional candidate genes (PCGs) associated with these traits. We performed genome-wide association (GWAS) analysis using GenSel software (Bayesian approach) to identify 1 Mb genomic windows associated with abdominal fat, skin and carcass fat content traits. The search for PCGs were made within each genomic windows associated considering their Gene Ontology (GO) terms and also the literature information. We also integrated into this study NGS-SNPs data from both populations and selection signature regions identified in Brazilian F2 Chicken Resource population to refine the list of PCGs. The genomic heritability values for fatness-related traits were from moderate to high (greater than 0.30). We identified quantitative trait loci (QTL) for abdominal fat, skin and carcass fat content traits harboring several PCGs involved in biological processes of fat deposition. We identified several NGS-SNPs annotated in potential functional regions in our PCGs and some of those were predicted as deleterious and high impact mutations. Besides that, some genes overlapped with selection signature regions in Brazilian F2 Chicken Resource population.

Shaw, Danielle I. "Effect of dietary fat composition on the metabolic syndrome; in vivo and in vitro studies." Thesis, University of Reading, 2007. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.487473.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: The metabolic syndrome affects 10-35% of the European population and increases type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. risk by 2.8-8 and 1.5-6 fold, respectively. Prospective evidence suggests dietary fat composition may modify components of the syndrome, including insulin resistance and endothelial dysfunction. Aim: To investigate the impact of dietary fat composition on insulin sensitivity (Si) and endothelial dysfunction. Methods: The effects of dietary fat quality and quantity were investigated.in a large (n =417), pan-European, dietary intervention trial p2 weeks), carried out in free-living participants with the metabolic syndrome. Multiple regression analysis identified key determinants of Si and endothelial dysfunction in this population and in a group of healthy, aged-matched subjects (n =239). A comparative investigation of the effects of a range of fatty acids on endothelial inflammatory gene expression was also performed using real time RT-PCR. Results: An increase in percentage energy from (%E) saturated fatty acids (SFA) decreased Si (t =0.055). Increased %E monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) reduced fasting insulin levels (p =0.03). The in vivo and in vitro investigations showed fat quality differentially affected endothelial function. In multiple regression analysis, key independent determinants of endothelial dysfunction and insuli~ resistance were insulin sensitivity (2.9-6.4%) and endothelial function (1.9-5.3%), respectively. Waist, gender, triacylglycerol and non-esterified fatty acid levels were also important determinants of Si. Results showed gender specific effects on the responsiveness of some metabolic factors to dietary intervention and also suggested disease state may be important. Conclusion: Substitution of SFA for MUFA may represent a strategy to improve insulin sensitivity in those with the metabo'lic syndrome. However, the practical attainment of an adequate level of substitution may be a limiting factor. Further work is required to elucidate the role of insulin action in the effects of fatty acids on endothelial function.

Abstract:
Smokers who successfully quit smoking gain weight; although important factors have been identified the mechanisms remain unclear. We measured changes in body weight, fat distribution, and dietary intake of macronutrients during a 26 week smoking cessation trial with the use of nicotine and placebo patch in a Hispanic sample of smokers (88% Mexican-American). Participants were randomized to receive patch treatment for 10 weeks and then followed for 16 weeks. We found that nicotine treated quitters experienced significantly less weight gain than placebo treated quitters at 6 weeks; however by 26 weeks, there were no significant differences among treatment groups. We found that percent total body fat (%TBF) for nicotine treated female quitters changed significantly less than for placebo treated female quitters at 10 weeks (p<0.05); there were no treatment differences in change in %TBF for males at 10 weeks. Male and female quitters experienced significantly less change in %TBF at 26 weeks than continued smokers (adjusted for treatment). Dietary intake of total energy, percent of total energy consumed as fat, protein, and carbohydrate were not significantly different by treatment group from BL for males or females. Thus, although body weight increased significantly in quitters versus non-quitters; dietary intake of macronutrients did not change significantly from BL for quitters and non-quitters. This suggests that factors other than changes in energy intake are responsible for the weight gain observed in this sample of Hispanic ex-smokers.

Gehle, Hermione. "The absurd reality of satire in Neil LaBute's 'Fat Pig'." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2015. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/1661.

Full text
Abstract:
This research project examines the misreading of satire in some productions of Neil LaBute’s play, Fat Pig. This practice led project aims to investigate why such misinterpretations occur and explore the theatrical styles that emphasise the satire in the text via rehearsal processes and production. There will be three preliminary paths undertaken in this research heading toward a new production of Fat Pig; an exploration of the responses of audiences and critics to past productions; an analysis of the background to Neil LeBute and his work; and an examination of theatrical expressions of satire, experimental theatre, contemporary theatre, and their practitioners. The overall aim of this research project is to find ways, as a director, to experiment with theatrical styles as a means to expand the play’s complex issues and ironic take on society’s narrow view of female beauty. This study will explore the following questions: what is the correlation between staging and design (the director’s influence and how an audience interprets meaning; and what forms of theatrical expression will highlight and emphasise the satire and irony present in the text? In what ways can critical reviews and feedback from previous productions indicate the understanding (or lack of understanding) of the ironic content in the script? Can situating LaBute in the context of his satiric writing style that straddles literary elements from opposing absurd and realism genres shed light on how irony can be exposed in Fat Pig? The project’s new production aims to underscore the play’s social commentaries by combining various forms of theatrical styles, philosophies, and methodologies. I wish to extend my directorial practice by investigating strategies to emphasis and highlight what I see as the underlying focus of Fat Pig; society’s discriminating behaviour to those who sit outside mainstream ideas of physical beauty

Abstract:
Previous research has explored the ways in which health, beauty, and gender discourses are used to promote and regulate an ideal of thinness. Further, research has explored how the fat acceptance movement and fitspiration has fought to resist such narratives. However, in the age of hashtag feminism a new group on social media, body positivity, has become the buzzword among celebrities, news conglomerates, and fashion companies. This study draws on interviews with body positive influencers and Instagram posts tagged #bodypositive and #fitspiration to examine the extent to which body positive influencers and users modify understandings of normative feminine body ideals and to what extent they resist and accommodate traditional discourses of gender, health, and beauty. In doing so, I explore which bodies are newly included and who is left out.<br>Doctor of Philosophy<br>In that last 5 years body positivity has gone “mainstream”—gaining the attention of women across the United States, circulating across a variety of mass media sources, being viral content on social media, and becoming the buzzword among celebrities, news conglomerates, and fashion companies. But what is body positivity and its impact? This dissertation sought to explore that question as it relates to gender, health, and beauty in the context of social media. Drawing on interviews with 12 body positive influencers and an examination of 210 Instagram posts tagged #bodypositive or #fitspiration I examine the extent to which body positive influencers and users modify stereotypical understandings of femininity, particularly the idea that the healthiest, most attractive, and most feminine body is a thin body. Findings suggest that body positivity is understood by influencers as made up of five aspects: (1) a connection to the fat acceptance movement; (2) an opposition to diet culture; (3) the belief that all bodies are good bodies; (4) celebrating self-love; and (5) proclaiming that all people have a freedom to be beautiful. In addition, my examination of Instagram posts shows that although a greater variety of body sizes appear in posts tagged #bodypositive than those tagged #fitspiration, both center hyper-feminized and sexualized white women who transgress stereotypes of femininity in one dimension, fatness or muscularity. As such, Instagram influencers and users struggle to negotiate an adherence to the traditional understandings of femininity, beauty, and health at the same time as they seek to expand them.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine if participation in an exercise based fat reduction program would affect body image. A second purpose was to determine if there were a relationship between psychological measures of body image and changes in percent body fat, total body weight, and/or cardiovascular fitness. Male and female differences were also examined. The participants consisted of nine middle aged males and twenty-six middle-aged females enrolled in a fat and/or weight reduction program. Data were collected at the beginning of the program and again at the end of the 12-week program. Body image was measured utilizing the Body Self Relations Questionnaire (BSRQ) (Winstead & Case, 1984). Percent body fat was determined by the protocol established by Pollock, Schmidt, and Jackson (1980), while cardiovascular fitness was measured using the YMCA bicycle ergometer test (Golding, Myers, & Sinning, 1982). Results of the t tests indicate that there was a significant improvement in pre-test to post-test in the perception of physical appearance t(16) = 4.68, p < .001 and physical health t(16) = 2.74, p < .01 pretest to post-test. The absolute change in percent body fat and total body weight decreased by 8% and 3%, respectively. Cardiovascular fitness increased by 23%. A Pearson product-moment correlation test determined there was a nonsignificant relationship between changes in physiological measures and psychological measures. Of these relationships, the strongest correlation occurred between cardiovascular difference and physical fitness difference pre-test to post-test (r = .4783, p > .05). Results from a discriminant analysis failed to reliably discriminate between males and females with respect to psychological andjor physiological measures. There were no significant differences between the adhering and non-adhering group in any of the pre-test measures. The largest difference was measured on the physical fitness subscale of the BSRQ, t(33) = 1.68, p = .10. The results indicate that changes in body image may not be due to physiological changes, but to the cognitive perception or interpretation of that improvement. Furthermore, it is difficult to predict who will complete a fat reduction program based on pre-test measures.
