Abstract:
The work of Palestinian playwright Fateh Samih Azzam arises from his experience growing up as a refugee and from his strong commitment to human rights. His latest play, Baggage, is set in a crowded airport where a lone Traveler re-enacts the Catastrophe of 1948 and its consequences. This article begins by positioning Azzam's work in relation to post-1948 Palestinian theatre. It then looks in detail at how Baggage, written as a monodrama, incorporates a number of devices including airport announcements and other voiceovers to imbue monologue with dialogue. The question of the relationship between monologue and dialogue is examined in the context of the emergence of the ‘political’ in performance and especially in relation to Jon Erickson's recent contention that dialogues facilitate the representation of conflicting world views whereas monologues tend to be ‘vehicles for the overarching world view of the playwright’. Next, it discusses a recent staging of Baggage in Famagusta, North Cyprus, focusing in particular on the way in which the production was able to embellish and extend devices contained in the written text of the play to facilitate a movement from monologue to dialogue. In its conclusion, the article returns to the prevalence of monologue in Palestinian drama and to Erickson's idea that monologue involves partiality to one side of a dispute. The article contends that productions of Baggage, which, like the one in Famagusta, accentuate the dialogical, will make it clear that the play is not just a memory play for Palestinians, but that it also cries out for all those forced out of their homes and into what Edward Saïd has called ‘the trauma of exile’. Furthermore, it argues that the Traveler's monologues need to be heard and should initiate dialogues, which in some parts of the world have not yet even begun. Finally, it suggests that the universal appeal of this and other Palestinian plays could be even more striking were the heavy use of politically oriented symbolism counterbalanced by a more minimalist Beckett-like aestheticism.

Abstract:
This article examines the changing importance, in Sikh history, of Baghel Singh, a Sikh military commander in eighteenth-century Punjab, and the significance of the most recent events commemorating him in Delhi—the Fateh Diwas. The Fateh Diwas was a spectacular event organized for the first time in 2014 at the Red Fort in Delhi, by the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD; Badal)-led Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee. It celebrated the conquest of Delhi by the Sikhs and the unfurling of the Sikh flag on the Red Fort by Baghel Singh. This claim is significant for its timing, symbolism and the historical legacy it seeks to remember. This representation of Baghel Singh also appears in modern paintings on Sikh history which are widely reproduced in popular spheres and also constitute the display in Sikh museums. A comparison of this particular representation of Baghel Singh with that in the nineteenth-century text, Sri Gur Panth Prakash by Ratan Singh Bhangu, is useful in understanding how Baghel Singh’s role has changed in Sikh history and how is it being deployed in contemporary heritage politics.

Abstract:
In 1968, the first cinema unit of the Palestinian liberation movement was founded in Amman by Mustafa Abu Ali, Sulafa Jadallah and Hany Jawhariyyeh. Affiliated with Yasser Arafat’s rapidly ascendant Fateh movement, from 1969 to 1974 this organization completed a stylistically eclectic series of films addressing revolutionary changes in Palestinian society and politics. This essay identifies some of the more striking formal experiments undertaken in these early works, reading these in contact with historical and political conditions. It links a reading of the Fateh movement’s response to questions of political form or definition in this period, with an account of the aesthetic and structural innovations through which these early filmmakers pursued a cinema suited to the revolutionary moment. By distinguishing works of this early period from those that followed, and by highlighting the stylistic variations occurring in them, the essay shows filmmaking by militants affiliated with the liberation movement’s political establishment to have been more adventurous and formally unstable than has previously been suggested.

This dissertation examines the recent emergence of popular recording artists who explicitly invoke the prophetic voices of their religious traditions in their music. In doing so, they situate their music within a pre-existing prophetic lineage. These musicians selfconsciously view their music as vehicle to spread a divine message, and they recognize that their lyrical voice can either become or echo a prophetic voice.

Ammar, Khalifa Sharef Salem. "PROPOSED GUIDELINES FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE ART AND ART TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAMS AT AL-FATEH UNIVERSITY IN LIBYA." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/298784.

Full text
Abstract:
Visual arts education provides the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for students to become more responsive and responsible citizens who are aware of the interaction among the visual, aesthetic, economic and social aspects of their culture. A well-prepared visual arts educator is an essential contribution to the quality of student learning in this area of education. The purpose of this study was to suggest a series of guidelines and recommendations for the improvement of the art and art teacher education at Al-Fateh University in Al-Jamahiriya (Libya). Development of these guidelines and recommendations was based on the following steps: (1) Review and examination of developments and trends in Al-Jamahiriya's formal education system. These included secondary education, teacher preparation, and visual art education. (2) Examination of the present art education program at Al-Fateh University and its role in preparing qualified visual art teachers for Al-Jamahiriya's secondary schools. (3) Comparative study of selected factors pertaining to art education teacher preparation at Al-Fateh University and four exemplary American universities. (4) Library research regarding current thought and practices in the areas of visual art education and teacher preparation. A questionnaire was also developed and sent to the art education department at Al-Fateh University to help obtain descriptive data concerning the teacher education program. A panel of experts at the University of Arizona had identified four exemplary American university art education programs. These programs were examined as part of this study. Recommendations are made regarding selected improvements in the art and art teacher preparation programs at Al-Fateh University.

Abstract:
Higher education institutions (HEIs) around the world and in the developing countries in particular e.g. Libyan HEIs are facing challenges that increase the pressure on them. Some of these challenges are related to the remarkable changes in population growth and fast changes in the development of knowledge and technology. Also, providing adequate resources, maintaining quality, raising funding and strengthening the curriculum are other challenges that need to be faced by those institutions. This research is aimed to investigate issues enabling and affecting the quality of services provided by Libyan public universities using principles of Total Quality Management (TQM) philosophy as a framework: Al-Fateh University (AFU) as a case study. The research is qualitative in nature, employing a case study approach and using indepth semi-structured interviews (from different levels including senior leaders, faculty members, support staff, students, and main employers) as the main data collection tool within the two selected embedded case studies. Those embedded cases are Electric and Electronic Department (EED)-Faculty of Engineering-AFU and Social Service Department (SSD)-Literature Faculty-AFU. Documents are used in addition to interviews in order to fully understand issues enabling and affecting the quality of services provided by the two embedded case studies. Contribution to knowledge is evident by the study, which represents the first attempt to empirically investigate issues enabling and affecting the quality of services provided by Libyan public universities: AFU as a case study through two selected embedded cases EED and SSD. This research provides specific original findings which include the use of Arabic and English language in the same lecture, the concept of students' administration and its consequences, the speciality of leaders biases the understanding of the needs of subordinate staff, suspension of the students' performance regulations affected the quality of education programmes, and a unique situation was found to be the senior and junior staff programme that attempted to improve teaching through knowledge transfer. This research has reduced the gap in knowledge in Libyan HE context in specific and in Arabic HE context in general. Other implications for HEIs are also provided by this research.

Gurseler, Ceren. "Islamic Rhetoric Of The Palestine Liberation Organization." Master's thesis, METU, 2006. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12607647/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to analyze Islamic rhetoric of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and its underlying objectives and reasons by examining policies, speeches and declarations of the PLO, Fateh and Yasser Arafat. It is widely accepted that the PLO functiones according to secular rules
perceives Israel, Palestine and the Israeli-Palestinian question on Palestinian nationalist and Third worldist grounds. However in spite of its secular functioning and goals, the PLO since its inception has referred to Islamic rhetoric on natinal struggle of Palestine&rsquo
s liberation. Henceforth it is argued that the PLO has chosen a pragmatist and instrumentalist language in referring to Islamic symbols and discourses. Islamic rhetoric of the PLO has aimed primarily to mobilize the Palestinians for national goals and to legitimize the PLO against rising power of political Islam headed by Hamas. Furthermore the thesis also demonstrates that the PLO&rsquo
s Islamic rhetoric was affected by Palestinian society&rsquo
s shift along Islamic lines and Islamic component of Palestinian nationalism and culture. The PLO seemed to intensify its resort to Islamic rhetoric with every crisis that decreased the PLO&rsquo
s authority and power. It is concluded that content of the PLO&rsquo
s pragmatic Islamic rhetoric was never related with making Islam as normative and legal basis of Palestinian society, rather it was related with mobilization and legitimating.

Ok, Rebecca Jade. "Fated to Pretend?: Culture Crisis and the Fate of the Individual." PDXScholar, 2013. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/1509.

Full text
Abstract:
The question of this thesis is whether the individual can resolve the problem of culture crisis in her own case. Culture crisis is a historical moment in which our culture leads us to expect a world drastically different from the one in which we find ourselves. This thesis will focus on the experience of Generation Y in the fall-out of the 2008 Recession. It will be argued that we need a Wittgensteinian view of language in order to account for the phenomenon of culture crisis. It will be suggested that our individual has to be a Nietzschean individual in order to resolve the problem of culture crisis in her own case. Potential incompatibilities between a Wittgensteinian view of language and the Nietzschean individual will be considered and rejected. It will be concluded that in order to resolve the problem of culture crisis in her own case the individual must change the way she lives.

Abstract:
Much effort has been recently directed to investigate how soluble factors in the local cellular microenvironment of embryonic stem cells (ESCs) regulate their fate decisions [1]; however, effects of mechanical signals in the local cellular microenvironment on the fates of ESCs are still not yet well understood. Early experimental evidence established in recent years has shown that mechanical signals and external forces experienced through interactions with extracellular matrix (ECM) mechanics can play critical roles in regulating survival, proliferation and differentiation of ESCs. However, there is still limited knowledge of how mechanical signals in the local cellular microenvironment regulate the fate decisions of human ESCs (hESCs), and advancing such knowledge will be critical for both fundamental understanding and clinical applications of hESCs. This work was thus set to explicitly investigate the mechanosensitive properties of hESCs.

Abstract:
The proposed Enbridge Line 3 Replacement Program would replace the aging pipeline from Hardisty, Alberta, Canada to Superior, Wisconsin, USA. For the Canadian route, an Ecological and Human Health Risk Assessment (EHHRA) was prepared for the National Energy Board (NEB) in Canada. In the United States, an Assessment of Accidental Releases (AAR) and the Supplemental Release Report were part of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) prepared for the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) and Minnesota Department of Commerce, Energy Environmental Review and Analysis (DOC-EERA). Computational oil spill modeling was used to assess the predicted trajectory (movement), fate (behavior and weathering), and potential effects (impacts) associated with accidental releases of crude oil along the proposed pipeline. This modeling included the 2-dimensional OILMAPLand and 3-dimensional SIMAP models. A total of 64 hypothetical release scenarios were investigated to understand the range of potential trajectories, fates, and effects that may be possible from multiple product types (Bakken, Federated Crude, and Cold Lake Winter Blend), released at any location, under varying environmental conditions. Trajectory and fate modeling was used to predict the downstream movement and timing of oil, as well as the expected surface oil thickness, water column contamination, shoreline and sediment oiling, and proportion evaporated to the atmosphere. These results were then used to assess the potential environmental effects to demonstrate the variability of outcomes following a release under different release conditions.
