Abstract:
The Medieval Hindu temples of Puri, Rhubaneswar and Konark are promoted as Orissa's version of northern India's ‘Golden Triangle’ of Agra, Fatehpur Sikri and Jaipur. One of the less affluent States in India, Orissa stands to benefit from tourism (FIGURE 1). The promotion seeks to appeal to all Indians and foreigners and also to prompt an image of Orissa as a distinct region. Such duality is typical among the diversity of community, ethnic, communal, federalist and national values at issue in India (Chatterjee 1993: 75).Cultivation of the temples is nothing new. Whatever the original purposes of icons, significance is ascribed, not simply inherent. It depends on economic or political interest and context (Cohen 1985). Harrison (1999) has argued that images of ethnicity tend to be defended as if at risk of pollution or theft by outsiders. Under the influence of European ideology, the commonest symbol for ethnic or nationalist aspiration is language but religion and other markers of culture have been used too (Smith 1981). Other than religion, one of the criteria for invoking the temples is the discipline of archaeology. However, archaeology too is a Western conceptual idiom (Cohn 1983: 209). Although literacy — including in the ‘English medium’ — is spreading, archaeology is not appreciated by everyone in Orissa. Partly for that reason, there have been various views as to how the temples should be presented and to whom.

Abstract:
Indian has a rich collection of monuments belonging to different periods of history, with motifs of respective periods. These structures are being damaged due to various reasons, in order to preserve the decorative motifs of monuments the present study was planned with an objective to collect the motifs of Jama Masjid, Fatehpur Sikri and apply them on kurti to preserve the motifs and to diversify the product as consumers are demanding for new designs in apparels. The motifs were collected from the site and were used for apparel designing using Corel Draw software. Collected motifs were classified into broad and narrow border design, central design, and buti designs. These were used for designing on kurti using Computer aided designing. The designed products were evaluated by a panel of judges. The judges appreciated the motifs selected for designing and also had an opinion that if such products are available in the market, they will purchase them. The judges also suggested that such products can also be sold at the historical places as tourist visit and can purchase them as the souvenir of that place.

Abstract:

Abstract

The amalgamation of native Indians and Muslim immigrants eventuated in a prolific way in the realm of literature, art, music, technology and especially in architecture, which reached at its zenith during Mughal period. Akbar, the great Mughal, is greatly recognized for his syncretism and religious tolerance. With the power of his influential personality and eclectic approach, he unified the various artistic traditions and architectural styles in the design of his new capital city, Fatehpur Sikri. Although, the architectural forms and construction techniques involved in the design of city had already been incorporated since the arrival of Islam in Indian subcontinent, but their synthesis reached at its zenith at Fatehpur Sikri and thus traditionally rich and fanciful indian style was merged with the lightness and simplicity of Islamic style. This paper will focus on the unique intermingling of two entirely different styles like their cultures which were born in different regions and with different approaches. This fusion developed a new style in architecture besides several other aspects of life in India.

Keywords: Fatehpur Sikri, Mughal Architecture, Composite Culture, Akbar
