Full textThe aim of this work was to study the opportunity to use thin hard coatings for structural applications. The use of light and, at the same time, high resistant components, in fact, is becoming more and more necessary in many industrial field, such as the automotive, aerospace and competition ones. However, for several applications the use of light alloys as a replacement of standard construction steels, involves large unsolved problems for which exhaustive studies are not available in the scientific literature. In this research, the possibility of increasing the fatigue and rolling contact fatigue (RCF) resistance of mechanical components, by means of thin hard coatings has been considered. It is well known that the main light alloys used in mechanical applications have both a reduced wear resistance and a poor fatigue and RCF behavior. These aspects are fundamental for the design of a high number of mechanical components such as gears, crankshafts, valves, bearings etc. Several studies demonstrated that components coated with thin hard films, deposited by Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) technique, can exhibit an increment of the fatigue resistance compared to the standard uncoated ones. This effect is mainly due to the residual stress field induced by the deposition process which generates high surface compressive residual stresses helpful to stop or drastically reduce the fatigue crack propagation. The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of these surface coatings both on fatigue and RCF behavior of specimens and mechanical components. Theoretical-numerical models to predict defect nucleation and fatigue/rolling-contact fatigue propagation have been developed. Furthermore, rotating bending tests on standard specimens have been carried out and suitable devices for fatigue and RCF testing of full scale components have been designed and assembled. Case hardened spur gears of a Ducati 1098R competition motorbike have been studied both numerically and experimentally.

Full textMuscle fatigue represents a complex phenomenon encompassing various causes, mechanisms and forms of manifestation. Continuous monitoring of local muscle fatigue during performance of certain work is possible by measuring myoelectric activity of particular muscles by the method of surface electromyography. Biochemical and physiological changes in muscles during fatiguing contractions are reflected also in properties of myoelectric signals recorded on the surface of the skin above the muscle concerned. Dynamic contractions are usual in the daily activities of movements and the surface myoelectric signal (sEMG) detected in that case is considered a realization of a nonstationary stochastic process. In order to track the evolution of its frequency content in time, a time-frequency representation is required. The Choi-Williams transform, member of Cohen’s class, is a good candidate for the analysis of sEMG signals. During dynamic contractions, as the muscle force (or torque) and the joint angle (position and velocity) vary there are changes in: the number of active motor units with possible different fiber types, the firing rates, the geometric relation between the active muscle fibers and the electrode, geometric relation between to the innervation zone and tendon, and the muscle fiber length. Some of these problems can be handled when investigating repetitive dynamic contractions by using highly standardized dynamic (i.e., isokinetic) movements and determining EMG variables in the same position-window for each contraction cycle (i.e., cyclostationary technique). The main objective of this study was to compare the electrical manifestations of muscle fatigue during concentric and eccentric contractions of the rectus femoris, vastus lateralis and vastus medialis. We derived the average fatigue pattern of the investigated muscles from experimental data recorded from nine subjects during isokinetic knee flexion-extension cyclical exercises.

Full textOrthotropic deck bridges are widely used in bridge engineering, especially for long span bridges. Although orthotropic deck bridges have many advantages, it is found that they are sensitive to produce fatigue cracking under the repeating vehicle loading since there are a large number of welded connections in the deck structure. Among of these connections, rib-to-deck plate connection, rib-to-diaphragm connection and rib-to-diaphragm-to-deck plate (RDDP) connection are the three typical welded connections that are more sensitive to the fatigue cracking due to the high concentrated stress and high residual stress. Fatigue analysis of an orthotropic deck is a complex and uncertain process due to many factors which can influence the fatigue cracking. A state-of-the-art literature review of the fatigue codes/specifications was conducted to identify their advantages, disadvantages and limitations in this study. Meanwhile, the stress performances of a typical orthotropic deck were analyzed through Finite Element analysis (FEA) and, then, the fatigue resistance evaluation was carried out by the structural hot spot stress method. In addition, a fatigue improvement technique, the Fluid Bed Peening (FBP) was illustrated, and fatigue tests of the specimens treated by FBP were conducted in the laboratory. The primary two goals of this study are to analyze the stress performances of the orthotropic deck and to develop an approach for improving the fatigue behaviors through FE method and analytical techniques, by doing parametric studies of various geometric parameters and the structural hot spot stress method. Many FE models were developed in order to analyze the stress influences of cutout geometry, with or without bulkhead, and the thickness of deck plate. The different applied loadings, which to simulate the different vehicle locations on the pavement, were used in order to obtain the maximum stress range. Then, submodels were developed based on the global analyses in order to obtain accurate stresses for calculating fatigue resistance, using the structural hot spot stress method. The fatigue analysis was done by the use of the structural hot spot stress method to quantify stress ranges for which there is no “nominal stress” database (that which is available in design codes for stress away from the concentration). Based on the analyses, a three-step approach is concluded and some suggestions are provided to bridge designers in this study which can be helpful for improving the design of orthotropic decks. Furthermore, a relatively new fatigue enhancement technique, FBP, is discussed based on simple fatigue tests. FBP as a technique of surface treatments can definitely improve the surface performance, and demands less operational parameters. Fatigue tests of four different groups were carried out under cyclic constant amplitude fatigue loading in the laboratory in order to study the effect of treatment of FBP. It is found that FBP not only can improve the fatigue life, but also sometime can remedy small fatigue cracks.

Full textThis thesis moves from ethnographic research that has investigated the multiple ways in which the caregiver’s role is recognized by different local actors in the public and institutional debate. and within the assistance services for the elderly in Emilia-Romagna. The thesis highlights how the social representations of caregiving and caring fatigue reflect ideas and values on aging, family care and the demographic and welfare crisis. The research aims to contribute to social studies on caregiving, by showing how social imaginaries of care shape the formation of healthcare systems. Care practices are privileged sites for studying how fundamental social categories for the formation of personhood and life-cycle are produce within the encounters between informal level and institutional one.

Full textIn the structural durability assessment, besides the use of theoretical and numerical methods, it is customary to carry out experimental tests to directly estimate the material strength against the application of external loads. The interest is often restricted to bending-torsion loading, considered very common in engineering applications. Over the years, different test methodologies that differ in terms of machines used, geometry specimen and type of excitation, have been proposed. None of them unfortunately can apply a bending-torsion loading to the specimen. Only two layouts seem promising, but they have some limitations both from an economic point of view and from the lack of an experimental validation through a prototype. The following thesis presents an innovative testing system able to perform multi-axial tests on tri-axial shaker in which the bending and torsion loadings acting on the specimen can be controlled independently. The system is composed of a cylindrical and notched specimen and a cantilever beam with two equal tip masses mounted at the specimen free extremity. The system is excited by vertical and/or horizontal base accelerations. The free end of the specimen is constrained by a thin and flexible plate that prevents any bending deformations of the specimen against horizontal excitations, but allows its rotation. So this layout is capable to control independently bending and torsion loadings when vertical and horizontal base accelerations are applied simultaneously. An analytical lumped-mass model and a finite elements model are used to design and verify the proposed system, through the estimation of the dynamic responses, the deformations and the stress state. A testing system prototype was realized and then validated by preliminary tests in the laboratory with harmonic base accelerations . The strain values were monitored in the T-clamping system by strain gauges. Such strains are used by the two models in order to obtain an estimate of the elastic peak stress acting in the net section of the specimen. The close correlation between numerical and experimental results shows that the testing system is really capable to control the bending and torsion loadings independently. Subsequently, fatigue tests (only bending and only torsion) with harmonic accelerations applied by shakers were carried out in the laboratory. It is shown that accelerated tests on shaker with harmonic base accelerations allow to perform constant amplitude fatigue tests , whose results are comparable with those obtained on an MTS machine. Finally, uni-axial fatigue tests with bending random loading and multi-axial fatigue tests with random bending-torsion loadings were performed. A predictive method of fatigue life is presented for both types of tests . The numerical results are in reasonable agreement with the experimental ones, thus proving the goodness of the predictive methods used.
DEFANTI, SILVIO. "Caratterizzazione a fatica delle leghe AlSi7Mg, Ti6Al4V e X3NiCoMoTi prodotte mediante Laser Powder Bed Fusion." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/11380/1200756.
Full textIn the last years, Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) has become the main technology to produce metal parts by Additive Manufacturing (AM). This manufacturing technique comprises the advantages of additive manufacturing and the high performance offered by metal alloys in order to produce mechanical components ready for the final application. Occasionally, due to the layer-wise process, some defects can be produced inside the parts, leading to mechanical properties that are well above the requirements for static loads but rapidly decay under fatigue conditions. This concern leads the researchers to investigate the actual mechanical properties of parts, as compared to those of traditionally manufactured components, and to optimize the whole process in order to limit defects and increase the reliability of the process. While extensive static tests confirmed high mechanical properties of the main metal alloys produced by AM, the fatigue behavior of additive metal parts still needs to be deeply investigated. In this study, the fatigue and tensile properties of 3 metal alloys were analyzed, in view of 3 final applications, listed as follows. • Automotive field: Aluminum alloy AlSi7Mg was studied for the final production of a topologically optimized frame part of a sports car. In particular, the interest was focused on the effect of: - Heat treatment: no heat treatment vs. T6 vs. the heating cycle required for painting the body-in-white frame; - Surface finish: as-built vs. polished; - Orientation on the building platform. • Medical field: Titanium alloy Ti6Al4V was investigated for the production of femoral stems with improved osseointegration. The study on this material was focused on the effect of: - Powder contamination; - Different parameters/powder sets; - Surface finish: as-built vs. polished; - Orientation on the building platform. • Mold manufacturing field: the Maraging steel alloy X3NiCoMoTi was studied for the application in a mold insert with internal cooling channels. The main concern related to this application led to the study of the effect of: - Holes in the material, acting as stress concentrators; - Surface finish of the holes; - Different parameters/powder sets. This work aims to provide better understanding of the critical variables of the manufacturing process and the post-processing operations. This study was accomplished within the European Project DREAM (Driving Up Reliability of Additive Manufacturing)
Rossi, Barbara.
