Abstract:
Managers often think that payment of salary and incentive are all the workers needs to be motivated. However beyond motivation which has been adjudged necessary for productivity, is the matter of workers engagement. This paper titled effect of engaged workforce on job performance: study of federal polytechnic, Oko, focused on examining what engages a worker and the effect of the engaged workforce on job performance. The work is hinged on Herzberg’s Two-Factor theory. The study employed qualitative and quantitative method. The finding shows that both the motivational factors and the “hygiene’ factor needs to be in place to “engage” a worker. Secondly, once the workforce is engaged the management spends less both in human and material resources in supervision and control, while recording optimal performance from the employees. It therefore recommends that managers should invest to engage the workers and save energy in supervision and control and yet achieved organizational objective.

Abstract:
The study investigated the effect of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) on Students’ Academic Achievement in Digital Electronics in Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, Bori, Rivers State, South-South, Nigeria. Quasi-experimental pre-test post-test control design was used in the study. The sample of the study comprised 84 Higher National Diploma (HND) final year students of electrical and electronic engineering (Telecommunications and electronics option). Three research questions and one hypothesis were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance guided the study. The instrument used for data collection was a 20-item Digital Electronics Achievement Test Questionnaire (DEATQ) designed by the researcher and validated by two experts in electrical and electronic engineering from Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri, Imo State. Kuder-Richardson formula was used to obtain the instrument’s reliability coefficient as 0.87. Mean and t-test were used to answer the research questions and test the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed among others that problem-based learning enhances students’ academic achievement in Digital Electronics. Consequently, it was recommended among others that engineering technology lecturers in Nigerian polytechnics and universities should use more of PBL and other student-centred teaching strategies in instructional delivery in order to boost students’ achievement in technology-based courses.

Zaggi, Hilary Yacham. "Contraceptive knowledge and practices among students in federal polytechnic Kaduna, Nigeria : an exploratory study." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/96083.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Population Reference Bureau (PRB) in 2011 reported a low rate of contraceptive use among Nigerian youths at 29%, despite reported high rates of sexual activity and increased awareness of the existence of contraceptive methods. This exposes the youths to the risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections and the effects associated with unwanted pregnancy. From a social constructionist standpoint, I used a mixed method research design to explore contraceptive knowledge and practices among students (18 to 25 years of age) at the Federal Polytechnic Kaduna. I see students’ attitudes towards contraception as being historically and culturally located and dependent on the prevailing cultural arrangement at that period. I thus distance myself from the position of the Health Belief Model (HBM) by recognising that individuals’ attitudes towards contraception is not only informed by the perceived benefits of contraceptive use but also by certain external social factors which could serve as barriers to the individual’s decision to use contraceptives. I collected data from 187 students out of a sample of 200 who had been systematically selected from the Departments of Mass Communication and Architecture at the polytechnic between August and September 2013. In addition, I conducted fifteen follow-up semi-structured interviews with students and three key informant interviews; two staff at the polytechnic clinic and one private pharmacist close to the polytechnic. Similar to other Nigerian studies among tertiary students, there is a relatively high level of sexual activity as well as high level awareness of contraceptive methods among students; however, they lack sufficient knowledge of how contraceptives function. Contraceptive use among sexually active students was also low either due to negative attitudes towards contraceptives resulting from inadequate or incomplete contraceptive information from friends or due to lack of easy access to contraceptive methods by students, partners’ influence or influences from cultural, including religious, beliefs and practices, thereby making students vulnerable to the risk associated with unprotected sex. There is therefore the need for interventions by relevant stakeholders that will seek to provide adequate information to students and develop in them positive attitudes towards contraceptive use.

Abstract: Geography teaching in middle level technicians integrated courses of IFPI is the object of this dissertation. His achievement resulted from our concern for the gaps that we witnessed as we exercise our role as professional Geography teaching at that institution. We define as its general goal the characterization of the work done by Geography teacher in these courses, identifying some of its effects on training of students. We place the following objectives: the identification of references epistemological underpinning the practices and attitudes of teachers, considering the legal guidelines for such education and literature that has dealt with this issue, identifying the ways the geography teaching is manifested in order to contribute building and preserving the memory of that teaching, and also the identification of traces in the culture of geography that results of experiments in the work of teaching that course. The methodological used was based on the vision elaborated by Gramsci, in addressing their ideas related to the school unit, as we seek to provide subsidies of ethnographic research and the submissions relating to discourse analysis, to determine elements of culture and the consequent memory that this education has produced the IFPI. An analysis of the geography evolution, science and school discipline, given the determination of the laws that have disciplined curricula in Brazil. Using research instruments in the form of questionnaires and interviews, we reap benefits from the teachers and students to reach our goals. As a result, we identified that the courses concerned, and within them the geography teaching, are not well understood by teachers and students, a reflection of lack of knowledge from the fundamentals of integration raised by legislation that sets out its guidelines, and/or absence of a planning built by the protagonists of this work, able to provide identity to the IFPI this teaching

The present study, conceived in the Post-Graduation Program in Education of PUC - Goiás, in the Line of Research "State, Policies and Educational Institutions", had as object of research the Integrated High School (EMI). This modality of teaching presents itself as a possibility of emancipatory education capable of transforming the lives of thousands of young people and adolescents assuming the possibility of an integral and omnilateral formation of the human being. The general objective of this work was to identify and analyze the teachers' perception about the design of the EMI in the Federal Goiano Institute, having this institution as the locus of the research and its teachers as subjects. In its methodological course the principles of the qualitative research were adopted having as investigative referential the dialectical historical materialism. In the techniques for data collection, questionnaires were applied to the 630 teachers of the institution where the return of 149 responses was obtained. Another technique used was documentary analysis through the examination of the PPCs of the integrated technical courses of informatics and agriculture. In the elaboration of the theoretical reference, the study started from the analysis of work as a creative activity of man and as the central category of the process of its humanization, in order to understand how the transformation of the biological being into social being occurs through the mediation of work with nature. We were also interested in understanding how the capitalist mode of production transforms the creativity of work through a process that involves the relation between things, with predominance of the object over the subject. Polytechnic education is also discussed as the possibility of breaking school as an instrument of alienation of man by the new social relations of production imposed by capitalism. The historical elements that determined the educational policies regarding professional education and its relationship with society in the historical context of Brazilian education and the presentation of the general guidelines that guided the Professional Education Reforms undertaken by the governments FHC and Lula are analyzed, focusing, in particular , which implied the structural separation between high school and technical education, revealing the historical, political and social process in which they were built. The results found regarding the teachers' perception about the EMI indicated that there is, for the most part, an ignorance of the principles and foundations that govern this modality of teaching, prevailing still a vision of training for the labor market to the detriment of an omnilateral formation , indicating the necessary continuing education of teachers. It is emphasized in the research findings that the consolidation of an integral human formation involves questions that pervade the institution's pedagogical organization, involving political, economic and social impasses characteristic of a class-divided society and which are challenges to be faced for the establishment of an omnilateral educational proposal as a "crossing" to an equitable society that breaks with the logic of the capitalist system.

Eminger, Stefanie Ursula. "Carl Friedrich Geiser and Ferdinand Rudio : the men behind the first International Congress of Mathematicians." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/6536.

Full text
Abstract:
The first International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) was held in Zurich in 1897, setting the standards for all future ICMs. Whilst giving an overview of the congress itself, this thesis focuses on the Swiss organisers, who were predominantly university professors and secondary school teachers. As this thesis aims to offer some insight into their lives, it includes their biographies, highlighting their individual contributions to the congress. Furthermore, it explains why Zurich was chosen as the first host city and how the committee proceeded with the congress organisation. Two of the main organisers were the Swiss geometers Carl Friedrich Geiser (1843-1934) and Ferdinand Rudio (1856-1929). In addition to the congress, they also made valuable contributions to mathematical education, and in Rudio's case, the history of mathematics. Therefore, this thesis focuses primarily on these two mathematicians. As for Geiser, the relationship to his great-uncle Jakob Steiner is explained in more detail. Furthermore, his contributions to the administration of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology are summarised. Due to the overarching theme of mathematical education and collaborations in this thesis, Geiser's schoolbook "Einleitung in die synthetische Geometrie" is considered in more detail and Geiser's methods are highlighted. A selection of Rudio's contributions to the history of mathematics is studied as well. His book "Archimedes, Huygens, Lambert, Legendre" is analysed and compared to E W Hobson's treatise "Squaring the Circle". Furthermore, Rudio's papers relating to the commentary of Simplicius on quadratures by Antiphon and Hippocrates are considered, focusing on Rudio's translation of the commentary and on "Die Möndchen des Hippokrates". The thesis concludes with an analysis of Rudio's popular lectures "Leonhard Euler" and "Über den Antheil der mathematischen Wissenschaften an der Kultur der Renaissance", which are prime examples of his approach to the history of mathematics.

Abstract:
A major challenge when working with open government data is managing, connecting, and understanding the links between references to entities found across multiple datasets when these datasets use different vocabularies to refer to identical entities (i.e.: one dataset may refer to Microsoft as “Microsoft”, another may refer to the company by its SEC filing number as “0000789019”, and a third may use its stock ticker “MSFT”.) In this paper the authors propose a naming scheme based on Web URLs that enables unambiguous naming and linking of datasets and, more importantly, data elements, across the Web. They further describe their ongoing work to demonstrate the implementation and authoritative management of such schemes through a class of web service they refer to as the “instance hub”. When working with linked government data, provided either directly from governments via open government programs or through other sources, the issue of resolving inconsistencies in naming schemes is particularly important, as various agencies have disparate conventions for referring to the same concepts and entities. Using linked data technologies the authors have created instance hubs to assist in the management and linking of entity references for collections of categorically and hierarchically related entities. Instance hubs are of particular interest to governments engaged in the publication of linked open government data, as they can help data consumers make better sense of published data and can provide a starting point for development of linked data applications. In this paper the authors present their findings from the ongoing development of a prototype instance hub at the Tetherless World Constellation at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (TWC RPI). The TWC RPI Instance Hub enables experimentation and verification of proposed URI design schemes for open government data, especially those developed at TWC in collaboration with the United States Data.gov program. They discuss core principles of the TWC RPI Instance Hub design and implementation, and summarize how they have used their instance hub to demonstrate the possibilities for authoritative entity references across a number of heterogeneous categories commonly found in open government data, including countries, federal agencies, states, counties, crops, and toxic chemicals.

Abstract:
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a developing affluent nation. The leaders of the UAE announced the pursuit of peaceful nuclear power in 2008 and by the end of the following year established its Nuclear Energy Program Implementing Organization (the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC)), Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), and ordered four APR-1400 pressurized water reactors from the Korean Electric Power Company (KEPCO). Nuclear Engineering programs were initiated soon afterwards at Khalifa University for graduate students and the University of Sharjah for undergraduate students. The technical workforce including nuclear power plant local operators and chemistry and radiation protection personnel was established by ENEC and the Institute of Applied Technology as an inaugural program of Abu Dhabi Polytechnic (AD Poly) in 2011. This paper describes the development of the dual education and training program at AD Poly, the experience of the initial cohorts who conducted their training at the APR-1400 units at the Shin Kori Nuclear Power Plant in Korea, and the current program between the AD Poly Abu Dhabi campus and the new Barakah Nuclear Power Plant based on lessons learned from the earlier years.
