Abstract:
The general aim of this thesis was to investigate new technology in feed formulation and production. For this purpose several aspects in the field of feed production were investigated. Specifically, during the course of this PhD program, three main sub aims have been addressed: i) evaluation of new ingredients, i.e., insect materials, in feed formulation and the impact of feed technology on their nutritional value; ii) improvements in the official methods for detecting Processed Animal Proteins (PAPs), and iii) investigation of the innovation, research, and development needs in in the feed in

Abstract:
The use of artificial feed balanced in protein, lipid, carbohydrate, fibre, amino-acids, digestible energy, vitamins and minerals is very essential in fish farming. In the formulation of feed it is necessary to determine exact optimum proportions of different feed ingredients, which meets the above nutritional requirements, to be mixed to produce a nutritionally well-balanced feed at the least possible cost.

Abstract:
The replacement of fishmeal by alternative protein sources in feeds for farmed fish is important in the context of limited global availability and high price of industrial fishmeal. However, little is known about the effects of novel protein sources on the effluents produced by aquaculture operations. Controlled feeding experiments were therefore conducted using Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) and European sea bass {Dicentrarchus labrax) offered feeds in which up to 35% by weight of the fishmeal was replaced by one of 7 different or differently processed protein sources. All plant proteins were fo

Background: Iraq is a higher middle-income country with a GDP of $223.5 billion (as of 2014). In the 1970s and 1980s, an extensive network of primary, secondary and tertiary health facilities was built, and the country recorded some of the best health indicators in the Middle East. However, two decades of conflict (both inter- and intra-state), sanctions and poor planning have reversed many of the previous gains. In the aftermath of the 2003 war, the government of Iraq introduced a Basic Health Services Package (BHSP) with a user fee component. International actors often advocate BHSPs as a me

The objectives of the present study were to investigate alternative feed ingredients as substitutes for both FM and FO in feeds for Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) to ensure optimal growth, feed efficiency and health of the fish as well as maintaining the nutritional quality of the fish product to the human consumer, especially the levels of n-3 hig

Aquaculture is one of the fastest growing food producing sectors in the world. It contributes immensely in food security, livelihood and employment generation. Fish and fishery products provide a healthy food for human consumption with high protein and low saturated fat. In commercial aquaculture, feed constitutes around 60-70% of total expenditure due to the use of fish meal and fish oil as a prime source of protein and lipid, respectively. These fatty acids are widely available in a large variety of marine fish, and therefore, they are preferentially used as raw material to prepare PUFA concentrates. The costs associated with feeds and feeding typically constitute the largest proportion of operating expenses in the production of fish in intensive culture. Suboptimal feeds and inefficient feeding regimes result in direct economic losses through food wastage and sub-optimal growth, deterioration of water quality and increased environmental pressures from excessive waste production. The formulation of cost effective, nutritionally optimal diets are therefore imperative to maximising profitability and reducing waste output on marine fish farms.
