Abstract:
Habitat structure is thought to affect the time and energy budgets of foraging birds through impacts on mobility, prey accessibility, prey abundance and predation risk. Many studies. particularly those with direct relevance to field ecology, cannot disentangle these different effects. This thesis decouples the effects of sward structure on mobility, prey accessibility and predation risk, whilst controlling for prey abundance, for the socially foraging starling Sturnus vulgaris in agricultural grasslands. I use an experimental approach throughout, exposing wildcaught starlings to variations in

Abstract:
Transitioning cattle from a high-forage to a high-concentrate diet increases the risk for ruminal acidosis and is often related to decreased feed intake, which compromises animal health and performance. Since control of feed intake and rumen motility are closely related, we hypothesized that a reduction in rumen motility may be associated with a reduction in feed intake during this transition. Computer programs were created to analyze feed disappearance and rumen pressure data for feeding behavior as well as identification and characterization of rumen contractions, respectively. Whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) populations diverge into morphs that differ in body size along a benthic-limnetic axis and throughout the depth of the water column. This process is assumedly initiated by the presence of northern pike (Esox lucius) and is followed by morphological adaptations to available food resources. In this study eight populations of whitefish was studied with the purpose of increasing the knowledge about adaptive trait utility in the feeding apparatus of whitefish. This was done by analyzing the mean and absolute maximum and minimum prey size ingested by fish along four m

A principal component analysis of the food cleaning behaviors showed two underlying correlated factors. The first factor was the use of the body to clean food.
