Abstract:
One of the main deterrents against group-housing systems of dry sows is the aggression between animals and the expensive designs necessary to prevent this. This is related to the low feeding level accepted in practice. The low level of feeding is also linked to the occurrence of stereotypies which are generally accepted as an indication of poor welfare. An ad libitum feeding system which does not result in excessive intake and concomitant problems of obesity, might improve sow welfare and have economical advantages in reducing capital cost. Suitable diets might be high-fibre diets. High inclus

Experiments were conducted to examine the impact of high milk yields on the behaviour and welfare of dairy cows. A preliminary study determined the social interactions existing within a group of 60 cows from which sub-samples of 20 high and 20 low yielding cows, that were not observed to interact with each other, were identified. These cows were used to examine the behavioural strategies employed by dairy cows coping with increased nutritional demands from milk production. Grazing time significantly increased with milk yield, consequently reducing lying time. A second study measured the appeti

There is evidence from a number of species that body condition or fatness plays a role in the regulation of energy balance, through a direct effect on voluntary food intake (VFI). However, since differences in body condition are frequently confounded with differences in previous nutrition, this study investigated the role of both factors in the control of VFI in sheep. In ewes grazing autumn pastures, there was a negative effect of body condition on VFI, but no independent effect of the previous level of nutrition.
