Abstract:
This thesis is the first substantial overview of the group of indeterminate musical works by Morton Feldman that he referred to as ‘graphs’. Despite the ever-expanding body of scholarly research on Feldman’s music, the seventeen published and three surviving, unpublished graphs that he produced over a period of seventeen years (1950- 67) have been largely ignored. This is the first substantial overview of the series and most of the graphs that he produced are discussed in detail for the first time in these pages. I argue that these works have been unjustly neglected, and that they are, in fact, of considerable interest from several musicological perspectives. To illuminate various ‘dimensions’ of these works, I explore their history, influence, evolution, conceptual foundations, compositional structure and, also, some of the ways in which they have been interpreted by performers. Key topics discussed include: Feldman’s original and distinctive notation, which he regarded as a transparent window onto sounds; his belief in the directness of his own relationship to sounds and the priority sounds should enjoy in a composition; his ‘all over’ method of working, which he actively developed as a way of minimising continuities; his concept of ‘weight’ and his interest in producing a holistic balance between weights; his use of collage-like methods, elastic forms and superimposition in the compositional process; his tendency, in some scores, to include numerical patterns, which he subsequently sought to expel; and the influence of abstract expressionist painting on his ideology and graph music.

Such formulations belong to his philosophical period characterized as Kantian turn, based on the reading of Kant's critical philosophy, but with nuances of Burke's influence. The present work aims to investigate the descriptive concepts of Lyotard’s aesthetic of the sublime, as well as the way they are used in the commentary of music issues, especially those of the musical avant-gardes of the twentieth century. It is intended to problematize the role of music in the constitution of Lyotard's aesthetics, as well as the scope and appropriateness of the composers listed by the philosopher as examples of authors committed to the values of the sublime. The main hypothesis is the assertion that Lyotard's sublime finds a privileged and singular fit in the work of the American composer Morton Feldman (1926-1987), due to the search for the divestiture of the spirit-subject-consciousness present both in the work of the philosopher and in the essayist and musical work of the composer. As a consequence, it is concluded that a musical critique that wants to address the present issues of the sublime demands an essayist writing that echoes a philosophy of the event, evoking the opening of language determination toward a manner (and not a method) of reflexive type of investigation, in terms of Lyotard's reading of the Kant’s Critique of the Faculty of Judgment.

Abstract:
Sunken Monadnock is a scripted combination of three modular musical surfaces. The word “surface” is borrowed from Morton Feldman, who compared the aural surface of music to the canvases of the action painters of the American Abstract Expressionists, and contrasted it with the work’s subject, or organizational structure. Composers’ transition toward a focus on surface through indeterminate compositional techniques, according to Feldman, parallels the development of modernist abstract art. “Sunken Monadnock: Composing with Visual Metaphors” is a companion critical essay that takes the surface/subject metaphor as a starting point for analyzing Sunken Monadnock.Other visual metaphors that inspired Sunken Monadnock, and are discussed in the essay, include Shakir Hassan Al Said’s mystical semiotics, Jasper Johns’s crosshatch prints, and Wassily Kandinsky’s theory of abstraction. The circle and spiral, especially, play influential roles in Sunken Monadnock as reflected by musical applications of repetition, rotation, compression/rarefaction, and endlessness. The void in the circle’s center also comes into play. The nature of the work’s formal counterpoint requires an innovative approach to the score, which consists of five sections, each of which reflects a different approach to the aural surface (i.e., to the traversal of time). The two outer sections are traditionally scored, but the three sections in the middle—labeled “Surfaces” are played simultaneously by three subsets of the ensemble. The piece is approximately 22 minutes long.

Abstract:
In my dissertation, I’m trying to establish a theoretical model for better understanding of processes that occur in Morton Feldman’s late works (e.g. Piano and String Quartet, For Bunita Marcus etc.). These compositions are extremely long and not climax-oriented, we can observe „repetition“ of limited amount of musical material, there is no „general“ compositional system, musical sections can be freely interchanged or combined, acoustical qualities of tone material are emphasized. These attributes are interconnected, they are creating a specific type of „musical assemblage“ that I define as rhizomatic form (in reference to Deleuzo-Guattarian concept of the rhizome). First of all, I’m elaborating Feldman’s own texts and current studies about his music. Subsequently, I’m discussing Feldman’s compositional procedures in the context of post-war musical avantgard (The New York School, Anton Webern, Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen, musique informelle). Main part of my dissertation is dedicated to rhizomatic form; before the discussion of this term, I’m focusing on related topics: compositional and acoustic reality, difference and repetition, speed and intensity. I’m constantly trying to confront my findings with Feldman’s early works (e.g. Intermission 5 and 6). I’m also comparing composer’s overall attitude towards musical structure with methods and techniques of abstract expressionists (e.g. Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock) and novelists like Samuel Beckett and Franz Kafka. Following the concept of rhizomatic form, I’m trying to analyze Feldman’s composition Patterns in a Chromatic Field for violoncello and piano.

Resumo: Esta pesquisa reflete a relação entre a música do compositor norte americano Morton Feldman e o grupo de pintores do Expressionismo Abstrato The New York School of Visual Arts - partindo da ótica do próprio compositor.
Abstract: This research is about the relation between the music of the American composer Morton Feldman and the group of painters of Abstract Expressionism The New York School of Visual Arts - from the point of view of himself. It will focus the way Feldman developed concepts drawn from painting in the technique and aesthetics of his music. Thus the dissertation presents a historical account of the 1950s, when Feldman and the painters met. Then we present concepts Feldman drew from painting and developed in his music. We provide analyses which allow us to understand how such concepts work musically throughout Feldman's notational history. The method of this research is based on Feldman's statements, researches about his compositional work and the analysis of pieces. Crippled symmetry, whose notation is among the most original devised by Feldman, undergoes extensive analysis. It has also been the inspiration for the composition of our work Sombras sobre o Encoberto II, We present this piece as the compositional outcome of this research. In addition to this piece, the conclusion shows how the concepts Feldman drew from painting can be vastly explored as a unique basis for the composition of music.

Abstract:
The present dissertation ("Hybridisations between music and painting: the relationship of Morton Feldman and Mark Rothko in Rothko Chapel") has as main objective to examine the technical approach, the stylistic resources and the degree of interdisciplinary relation that establishes between the work of the American composer Morton Feldman (1926 - 1987) Rothko Chapel (1971) and the work of the same painter, also American, Mark Rothko (1903 - 1970), realized in Houston, Texas. By linking the pictorial and architectural work with the musical - due to the "autobiographical character" attributed by the composer to his piece - the research addresses its degree of hybridization, the rhetorical, narrative or imitative processes used and the possibility of classification of This interdisciplinary convergence within the scope of musical ekphrasis. Because of this, the work developed, which has a transdisciplinary character, focuses basically on the study, analysis and comparison - through similarities and / or references - of the musical and pictorial work within the North American artistic and sonorous context of Mid twentieth century. However, while the musical proposal is approached with a technical and systematic criterion of analysis of the score - from a melodic, harmonic, organological, agogical, dynamic and structural point of view, the pictorial intervention is examined not only as a site project -specific - number of paintings or panels, size, shape and technique of the same, arrangement in the architectural space, specific treatment of light - but also as a plastic disc inserted in the artistic and vital trajectory of its author. The comparative study is completed with textual and biographical contributions, especially related to Morton Feldman, given the importance they have in order to locate Rothko Chapel in a context that, beyond strictly musical, reflects the pictorial influence that the work had Of Rothko in the compositional methods of our musician. Finally, the thesis is accompanied by a self-recorded CD on Rothko Chapel, a recording that is also accessible through an online platform. Through the same it is wanted that the interpretation made allows to contrast the proposals, the results and the conclusions obtained during the investigation process.

Abstract:
This thesis examines works by Earle Brown (1926-2002), John Cage (1912-1992), Morton Feldman (1926-1987) and Christian Wolff (b. 1934), some of whose compositions avoid a fixed and determinate sequence of sounds in performance. This can lead to a redefinition of the relationships between composer, performer and listener, thus changing the role of the musicians and asking for a different attitude on the part of listeners. Such an alteration of the traditional, hierarchical model of music production was motivated, to differing degrees, by aesthetic, political and sociological considerations. Drawing on diverse music, mostly written between 1950 and 1971, such as Feldman's Projection 1 (1950), Cage's 4'33" (1952) and 0'00" (1962), Brown's Folio (1952-53) and Wolff's Prose Collection (1968-1971, ca. 1986, 1997), this study explores the compositional and notational ideas which have changed the status of the 'work'. Such music aims neither for a reified work, where all parameters are totally fixed, nor for a completely 'free' improvisation. Instead of trying to establish a historical perspective on this repertoire, the thesis compares the composers' works by focusing on overarching issues. It is shown that the four composers are less homogenous in their aesthetic, their compositional approaches, and in their attempts to redefine the relationships between themselves and the performers of their work, than previously assumed. This research illustrates that, in spite of a common understanding that Brown, Cage, Feldman and Wolff experimented with traditional conceptions of art music, this does not mean that many works negate the traditional functions of composer, performer and listener. However, a number of compositions redefine the idea of a musical 'work', and alter the functions of, and relationships between composer, performer and listener.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses the issue of the modernist musical artwork, specifically in terms of the spatialization of musical time, in aesthetic and music-analytic terms. Firstly, it focuses on the notion of musique informelle as it was expounded in Adorno’s essay ‘Vers une musique informelle,’ (1961) and its place in Gianmario Borio’s elaboration of this in terms of an aesthetics of the informel. Secondly, it proposes a further expansion of these aesthetics via a double strategy: a comparative reading of Walter Benjamin’s critique of philosophies of time (including the work of Henri Bergson), language and objects, and furthermore a reconceptualization of both Adorno’s and Borio’s aesthetics in terms of a new theory of the object (as sound-object) in light of a new reading strategy. This reading is based on Walter Benjamin’s notion of the dialectical image, which proposes a new form of philosophical interpretation. The theorizations of the sound-object and the dialectical image furnish a basis for a re-conceptalization of the (in)formel, allowing for the interpretative reading of the music of three composers in particular: Edgard Varèse, Morton Feldman and Iannis Xenakis. Particularly, the study of a number of their works, including Intégrales (Varèse), On Time and the Instrumental Factor and Words and Music (Feldman), and Duel (Xenakis), reveals what Adorno terms their (truth) content, in their mediation of rationalization and intuition. Finally, it is argued that these modernist works can in turn bring new insights into Adorno’s aesthetics of the modernist work of art.

Communication practices, which incl ude dialogue, participation, production, circulation and apropriation of information, are observed in social interactions related to women's experiences of illness in the control of uterine cervix cancer in Northern Brazil, where there is high incidence an d mortality. The research focuses a dialogic approach in communication studies, in which the human link appear as an object. In a transdisciplinary axis that enables integration between theory and practice, dialogy is identifying as a constituent element o f social, cultural, political relations where symbolic disputes occur. This reflects on the communication rights and its implications in human right to health. The right of communication has in dialogue studies the theoretical basis and reference for a bid irectional and democratic process, which includes participation in the construction of public policies. The background and experiences are linked to the tripod concepts - dialogue, law and linkage - which are constituent of health integrality. The applicab ility in management and health services everyday is in recognition of users as political subjects. Th e dialogue involves reciprocity through which people perceive and elaborate discourses, right includes visibility for the demands and access to spaces to e xert citizenship and human link is materialized by understanding the needs and respect for people ́s knowledge. Two questions guided the research: one theoretical and epistemological nature, linking theories and practices in order to understand the communic ation in different aspects and contexts in the field of communication and health; another, methodological, invests on a strategy to relate the communication practices with the right to health, both in the daily lives of women users of health services and i n the public policies. The methodological approach strategy followed therapeutic itineraries, monitoring reports about illness and care with 16 users of the Brazilian Unified Health System. It was interviews with 15 managers of the national, state and muni cipal health systems. Users tell of experiences in which the difficulty in being heard and considered - base of communication rights - interfere with the guarantee of their right to health. The instrumental use of communication is naturalized in the daily units and healthcare institutions, do not show political aspects or interests that underlie the practices, which are mainly based on the transfer of information on standards or procedures for users. Although there are speeches open to user participation, p ublic policies and services tend not to include them in the construction and evaluation guidelines or actions. The responsibility of professional health communicators is emphasized in daily life, in the visibility of needs and expansion of opportunities fo r dialogue, rethinking the practices itself as space for reflection and transformation

Abstract:
Some fields come and go, but there will always be a need for older generations to teach the younger generations. For this reason, teachers will always be needed. The material that they choose to teach can sometimes determine the outcome of a nation. Take a look into German and Roman histories; they are littered with teachers convincing students that their way is right. I think that it is imperative that we research the full potential of what we are teaching our students. For that reason, my thesis will consist of analyzing and synthesizing the research of Feldman, Sternberg, Gardner and Eisner, gathering information on their works and applying them to art education. I will apply my findings to the modern day secondary art classroom; whether it is classroom design or visual handouts, I will use the knowledge gathered to better equip the room to the advancement of multiple intelligences in hopes of inspiring my future students to be creative and lifetime learners.

Abstract:
The notion of « scene » being, as has been shown by Esa Kirkkopelto in his book Le théâtre de l’expérience – Contributions à la théorie de scène, a concept-limite (a limit-concept) which becomes distinguishable nowadays because of or thanks to a certain seclusion of theatre, puts us in front of one of its threads which is the one of sound and of music. Because the scene, if it seems to also and mainly deal with theatre as for being concerned by its optical side, what about its relation to and with sound, and thus to and with voice and music, but also time and space ? This thesis project intends to follow up this problem in a kaleidoscopic study which, on one side, mobilizes some of the philosophy of Deleuze and Guattari (especially as to be found in Mille plateaux) as well as what Sartre has been able to formulate in his book L’imaginaire, and, on the other side, the investigation of some chosen artistic oeuvres by Beckett and Feldman, but also two texts of Rilke and Jaccottet. On this line of multiple resonances, the project put and puts to prove of value the notion of scénophonie (scenophony) towards which it runs, but which at the same time has allowed it to come into existence and to pursue. It is a contribution to the research and science of the scene

Abstract:
Introduction: Newborn Hearing Screening Programs (NHS) are being implemented worldwide, aiming the early detection of hearing deficit in the newborn. The evaluation of these programs becomes an important tool for the quality control of the care offered and for corrective actions by public health policymakers. Objective: Describe the healthcare history of the children screened in a Newborn Hearing Screening Reference Service (NHSRS) in Belo Horizonte and analyze the intra-urban differentials related to the outcome of the Newborn Hearing Screening tested at a NHSRS and living in Belo Horizonte in the period from January 2010 to February 2011, having as reference the Health Vulnerability Index (HVI). Method: A database with information regarding the children screened by the NHSRS in the period from January 2010 to February 2011 was analyzed. The study was therefore divided in two phases. In the first, the results were evaluated having as parameters the quality indicators proposed by the American Academy of Pediatrics (1999) and the Joint Committee on Infant Hearing (2007). Chi-Squared and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used for the study of the relationship between the variables. In the second phase the children screened by the NHSRC and living in Belo Horizonte were analyzed. The Health Vulnerability Index (HVI) of the census sector of each child was obtained by the geo-referencing of their respective addresses. A multivariate analysis was undertaken using the decision tree technique, considering a statistical model for each answer. A thematic map of points representing the geographic distribution of the children evaluated by the NHS Program was also elaborated. Results: In the period studies, 6.987 newborn were screened. The rate of routing for retesting, compliance to the retesting and routing for diagnostic were respectively 8.0, 71.9 and 2.1%. The absenteeism in the retest phase corresponded to 28.1% and there was no statistic relevant relationship with the age and origin of the children in the moment of the hearing screening. In the reevaluation phase, the absenteeism corresponded to 73.6% of the children routed. The age median of the children at the moment of the Newborn Hearing Screening was of 23 days, and 65% of them were evaluated in the 30 first days of life. The proportion of children with risk indicator for hearing loss (RIHL) that failed the NHS was greater than that of children that passed (p<0.0001). The risk that a child with RIHL fails the NHS was 2,4 times greater than that of a child without RIHL (IC 95% = 2,0 3,0). It was also noticed that children in the group that failed the NHS were older than those in the group that passed (p<0.0001). Considering the sample of the second phase, the probability of failure in NHS by children with a very high HVI or without HVI data was 1.5. higher than for children living in other neighborhoods. For the children living in areas of low, medium and high HVI and that undertook the RIHL after 30 days of life, the probability of failure in the RIHL was 2.1 times higher in children that had RIHL (17.2%) than those that do not have it (8.1%). It was also noticed an unequal distribution of children tested and of failures in the HNS and between the region of the municipality. Conclusion: The social determinants of health influenced the result of the children in the HNS Program. Inter-setoral actions in the areas of greatest health vulnerability are needed to contribute to the reduction of the inequality, with positive impactson the pediatric hearing health in the municipality. The NHSRS studied met three of the four indicators evaluated. The results highlight a need for strategic actions to increase the number of children screened in the first 30 day of life. The absence of integrated information systems between the screening and diagnostic services rendered impossible the identification of the number of children with the hearing disorder detected and treated at an early stage.

This dissertation addresses the evidentialism in the light of contemporary analytical epistemology or the theory of knowledge, notably that sustained by Richard Feldman and Earl Conee. In the first part of the paper I approach the theories of internalist and externalist justification as theories that deal with the origin of justification. Then I try to relate them to theories about the structure of justification. From this perspective, internalism was related to foundationalism, coherentism and infinitism. And, externalism has been related to causal theory, tracking theory, reliabilism, and the theory of proper function. In the second part, the Evidentialist Theory of Judgment or Evidentialism in Conee & Feldman is discussed, where besides the definition of evidence I present the classification between synchronic justification and diachronic justification, as well as propositional justification and doxtic justification. The second part also examines the relationship between 'epistemic justification and truth' and the relation between 'evidence and belief', also addressing the principle of underdetermination and some objections to the evidentialism of Conee & Feldman.

Abstract:
This dissertation considers the use of orchestra bells as a solo instrument. I use three examples taken from chamber literature (Drumming by Steve Reich, Why Patterns? by Morton Feldman, and Ave by Franco Donatoni) to demonstrate uses of the instrument in an ensemble setting. I use six solo, unaccompanied orchestra bell pieces (Twelve Bell Canons by Robert Morris, Katarynka by Marta Ptaszyńska, Over by Stuart Saunders Smith, A Little Suite and an Encore Tango by Will Ogdon, Breaks Through by Lafayette Gilchrist, and Bells for New Orleans by Roscoe Mitchell) to illustrate the instrument’s expressive, communicative ability. In the discussion of each piece, I include brief background information, the composer’s musical language in the piece and performance considerations. I interviewed composers of these solo works to complete the research for this document to discuss their musical language and their thoughts on writing for solo orchestra bells.
